How does the chemical reaction of a single polymer chain progress? This question is not proven, as long as it is studied the data of the ensemble average from the large number of molecules. In this study, we succeeded for the first time in the direct measurement of when, where, and how the chemical reaction of a polymer chain proceeds on a nanometer scale. That is, single‐molecule imaging of the photodegradation reaction of a chiral helical π‐conjugated polymer following laser irradiation of 405 nm was conducted. Analysis of the chemical kinetics showed that the photodegradation of the single polymer chain proceeded stepwise as a quantum phenomenon. When the motility of the chain‐end increased, reactivity of the photodegradation increased. It was also discovered that the photodegradation of the polymer chain proceeded continuously in one direction, like the “domino effect.” Our method allowed dynamic imaging of single polymer chains at a solid/liquid interface, and hence can be applied to the study of many types of polymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four novel two‐dimensional (2D) donor–acceptor (D‐A) type copolymers with different conjugated side chains, P1 , P2 , P3 , and P4 (see Fig. 1 ), are designed and synthesized for the application as donor materials in polymer solar cells (PSCs). To the best of our knowledge, there were few reports to systematically study such 2D polymers with D‐A type main chains in this area. The optical energy band gaps are about 2.0 eV for P1 – P3 and 1.67 eV for P4 . PSC devices using P1 – P4 as donor and [6,6]‐phenyl‐C61‐butyric acid methyl ester as acceptor in a weight ratio of 1:3 were fabricated and characterized to investigate the photovoltaic properties of the polymers. Under AM 1.5 G, 100 mA/cm2 illumination, a high open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.9 V was recorded for P3 ‐based device due to its low HOMO level, and moderate fill factor was obtained with the best value of 58.6% for P4 ‐based device, which may mainly be the result of the high hole mobility of the polymers (up to 1.82 × 10?3 cm2/V s). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(3‐hexylselenophene)s (P3Hs) with high regioregularity (RR = 92–96%), that is, regioregular poly(3‐hexylselenophene)s (rr‐P3HSs), have been synthesized under the phosphine‐free direct arylation conditions in the presence of PdCl2 as a precatalyst. rr‐P3HS with the high molecular weight (Mn ~ 10,000) was obtained as a result of screening of direct arylation conditions. Subsequently, the influences of primary structure, molecular weight (Mn = 3900–10,000) and regioregularity (RR = 57–96%), on optical properties and self‐assembled nanostructure of P3HS were investigated. X‐ray diffraction demonstrated that molecular weight, regioregularity, and preparation method of films dominate the crystallization behavior of P3HS. Among these parameters, it was evident that a high degree of regioregularity was the most fundamental contributor to achieve pure crystalline nanostructure. Furthermore, nanoassembly based on pure crystalline nanostructure, such as non‐woven fibrous and bundle‐like spherulitic self‐assembled nanostructures, was successfully prepared in rr‐P3HS, respectively, by appropriate modulation of the aforementioned parameters. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We have developed a morphologic method to investigate the relaxation processing of the stretched polymer chains in melts, in which an atomic force microscope probe was used to shear the surface of an isotactic polypropylene melt to obtain the isolated shish‐kebab structure. We present the results of the time dependence of length of the isolated shish‐kebab structure and the stress dependence of the kebab density along the direction of shish in this paper. Our results demonstrate that the shear‐oriented polymer melts show the relaxation dynamics of worm‐like chain where the length deficit of the isolated shish‐kebab structure is scaled with the relaxation time as a power of 1/3. Dithiafulvene oligomers ( 3 ) were prepared by cycloaddition polymerization of aldothioketenes with their alkynethiol tautomers derived from 1,4‐diethynylbenzene ( 2 ) with the addition of 1‐ethynyl‐4‐methylbenzene ( 1 ) as a monofunctionalized compound. Different feed ratios of 2 / 1 were used to control the molecular weights of 3 . The structures of 3 were confirmed by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopies in comparison with those of 2‐(4‐tolylidene)‐4‐tolyl‐1,3‐dithiol ( 4 ) as a model compound, which was obtained by the treatment of lithium 2‐tolylethynethiolate with water in Et2O. The number‐average degree of polymerization (DP) and the number‐average molecular weight were measured by gel permeation chromatographic and 1H NMR analysis. DP increased with an increasing feed ratio of 2 / 1 . The ultraviolet–visible spectra of 3 in diluted acetonitrile showed that the absorption maxima of 3 increased with an increasing DP of 3 . These redshifts are ascribed to an effective expansion of the π‐conjugation system in 3 . The oligomers exhibited a maximum conjugation length of seven repeating units. The redox properties of 3 were examined by cyclic voltammetry. The oxidation half‐peak potentials (Ep/2) of 3 were slightly cathodically shifted with increasing DP. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A poly(p‐phenylenevinylene) derivative bearing conjugated side chains (polyCPV) was synthesized by Migita‐Kosugi‐Stille type coupling polycondensation reaction. This polymer contains phenylenevinylene units in both the main chain and the side chains. UV–vis absorption and fluorescence emission spectroscopies revealed a well‐developed π‐conjugation of the polyCPV. The absorption band of the polymer was extended to long wavelengths. A fluorescent emission maximum of polyCPV is located at considerably longer wavelengths than that of the conjugated side chain monomer. Electron spin resonance measurements of polyCPV confirmed generation of charge species in both the main chain and the side chains via iodine doping. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Using a noncontact atomic force microscope, we found that single molecules in a chiral helical π‐conjugated polymer could form a unique periodic structure having a pitch of about 20 nm on the surface of a mica substrate. The diversity of the periodic structures is also discussed. The synthesis and unique optoelectronic features of a π‐conjugated polymer containing both thiophene and 1‐phenylphosphole sulfide units (multiple heteroles) in the main chain by the post‐element transformation of a regioregular organometallic polymer possessing titanacyclopentadiene‐2,5‐diyl unit are described. The π‐conjugated polymer containing multiple heteroles was obtained in 73% yield by the simultaneous reaction of the organotitanium polymer with sulfur monochloride and dichlorophenylphosphine (0.6 equiv each), whose number‐average molecular weight (Mn) and the molecular‐weight distribution (Mw/Mn) were estimated to be 11,000 and 3.4, respectively, by the size exclusion chromatography (SEC). The π‐conjugated polymer thus obtained was found to have the high HOMO and the low LUMO energy levels due to the electron‐rich thiophene and electron‐deficient phosphole sulfide units, respectively, as supported by its cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis. Compared to a mixture of a polymer containing sole thiophene‐unit and that containing sole phosphole sulfide units, the π‐conjugated polymer‐containing multiple heteroles proved to exhibit interesting optical properties. For example, a specific emission peak was observed at 608 nm in the photoluminescence spectrum, which was not observed in the case of the thiophene‐containing polymer, the phosphole‐containing polymer, and their mixture. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel hybrid‐type chiral binaphthyl‐based polyarylene derivative with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) units 2a was prepared by Suzuki–Miyaura coupling polymerization from a chiral (R)‐6,6′‐dibromo‐2,2′‐diPOSS‐substituted 1,1′‐binaphthyl derivative 1a and p‐biphenylene diboronic acid. As a reference, a binaphthyl‐based polyarylene derivative without POSS unit 2b was also prepared. The obtained polymers were studied with thermogravimetric analysis, optical rotations, circular dichroism (CD), ultraviolet‐visible, and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. Gel permeation chromatography measurements of 2a and 2b showed that their number‐average molecular weights were 13,300 and 16,500, respectively. The thermal stability of POSS‐modified polymer 2a (temperature of 10% weight loss; T10 = 380 °C) was extremely high compared with that of polymer without POSS unit 2b (T10 = 335 °C) due to the siliceous bulky POSS segments on the side chains. The specific optical rotation [α]D was ?66.7° (c 0.06, CHCl3) for 2a and ?62.3° (c 0.06, CHCl3) for 2b . The CD spectra showed that these two polymers had very similar and strong Cotton effects. Film polymer 2a showed almost the same PL spectrum as that in dilute CHCl3 solution, indicating that bulky POSS units strongly suppressed intermolecular aggregation of the π‐conjugated polymer backbone. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Tropone‐fused, various π‐conjugated polymers ( P2 – P5 ) were synthesized by the palladium‐catalyzed coupling reaction of 1,4‐dibromo‐6,8‐dimethyl‐7H‐benzocyclohepten‐7‐one with aromatic divinyl, diboronic acid, and diethynyl compounds. The molecular orbital calculation of the model compounds was performed to discuss effective conjugation length of the repeating unit of the polymers. The absorption spectra of phenylenevinylene‐type polymers shifted to longer wavelengths than the model compounds by about 60 nm. They exhibited green fluorescence [λmax(em) = 544 and 561 nm]. The absorption spectrum of a phenylene‐type polymer blueshifted by 10 nm; however, that of a phenyleneethynylene‐type polymer redshifted by 83 nm as compared with their model compounds. They showed fluorescence with peak maxima at 457 and 489 nm, respectively. As a result, the absorption spectra of phenylene‐ and phenylenevinylene‐type polymers blueshifted, but that of a phenyleneethynylene‐type polymer redshifted by the annulation of tropone onto a benzene ring in the conjugated polymer. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A new series of symmetrically substituted bulky PPV‐copolymers based on poly(bis‐2,5‐(2‐ethylhexyloxy)‐1,4‐phenylenevinylene) ( BEH‐PPV ) bearing tricyclodecane (TCD) pendants were synthesized to study the effect of chain aggregation in the π‐conjugated polymer backbone. The composition of the copolymers was varied up to 100 mol % and the structures of the copolymer were confirmed by NMR and FTIR. The molecular weights of the copolymers were obtained as Mw = 11,500–1,78,800 depending on the TCD‐incorporation in BEH‐PPV. The origin of the π‐aggregation was investigated using mixture of solvents (polar or nonpolar) or temperature as external stimuli. Absorption, photoluminescence, and time‐resolved fluorescence decay techniques were employed as tools to trace molecular aggregation in solution and solid state. The TCD‐substituted bulky copolymers showed almost twice the enhancement in photoluminescence compared with that of BEH‐PPV . Solvent‐induced aggregation studies of copolymers revealed the existence of strong molecular aggregation in BEH‐PPV compared with that of bulky copolymers. Variable temperature studies further evidence for the reversibility of molecular aggregation on heating/cooling cycles and showed isosbetic points with respect to free and aggregated polymer chains. Time‐resolved fluorescent studies confirmed the existence of free and aggregated π‐conjugated species with a life time of 0.1 to 1.0 ns. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Morphologies of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL‐PEG‐PCL) triblock copolymer self‐assemblies in the diluted solution and in gel were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The copolymer self‐assembled into wormlike aggregates, of uniform diameter, in water. The wormlike aggregates arranged in order to form separate clusters in the diluted copolymer solution; at a higher copolymer concentration, the clusters became bigger and bigger, and packed together to form gel. π‐Conjugated polymers (Poly1–Poly3) containing a 2,2′‐bipyridine (bpy) unit were subjected to coordination to nickel and copper dithiolate for the purpose of manipulating the photophysical properties. The absorption maximum peak of Poly1 [maximum wavelength (λmax) = 446 nm] redshifted by 36 nm upon the coordination of bpy to NiCl2, which produced Poly1–NiCl2. A further bathochromic shift was observed in the spectrum of Poly1–mntNi [mntNi = (maleonitrile dithiolate)nickel; λmax = 499 nm] bearing the dithiolate ligand, which stemmed from the extension of the conjugated system over the nickel dithiolate moiety through the bpy unit. An increase in the [Ni]/[bpy] ratio in Poly1–mntNi rendered the original maximum peak at 446 nm smaller and the lower energy charge‐transfer peak at 499 nm larger; the isosbestic points remained at 380 and 475 nm. The green fluorescence (λmax = 504 nm) emitted from Poly1 markedly diminished upon the coordination of nickel dithiolate because of the effective energy transfer. The absorption maximum peak of Poly1–mntNi in chloroform at 499 nm blueshifted to 471 nm when the volume ratio of the chloroform/N,N‐dimethylformamide solvent reached 10:90. The coordination of nickel dithiolate to Poly2 and Poly3 also brought about redshifts of the absorption maximum peaks of as much as 55 and 61 nm, respectively. The absorption maximum peak of Poly1–(phenyldithiolate)nickel(pdtNi) (λmax = 474 nm) redshifted by 28 nm in comparison with that of Poly1, whereas the magnitude of the shift of Poly1–bis(thiophenoxide)nickel(btpNi) bearing two thiophenoxide ligands was 20 nm. Low‐band gap selenophene‐based polymers were synthesized. Their optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties and space‐charge limited currents were compared with those of the related thiophene‐based polymers. The band gaps of the Se‐based derivatives were approximately 0.05–0.12 eV lower than those of their thiophene counterparts. Organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices based on the blends of these polymers and 1‐(3‐methoxycarbonyl)propyl‐1‐phenyl‐[6,6]‐C71 (PC71BM) were fabricated, and the maximum power conversion efficiency of the OPV device based on PSPSBT and PC71BM was 3.1%—with a short‐circuit current density (Jsc) of 9.3 mA cm?2, an open‐circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.79 V, and a fill factor of 0.42—under AM 1.5 G illumination (100 mW cm?2). © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(3‐pentenylthiophene) and poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(3‐undecenylthiophene) diblock copolymers have been synthesized by McCullough method. X‐ray diffraction analysis of the diblock copolymers displayed all the reflection peaks specific to regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene), indicating that the presence of poly(3‐alkenylthiophene) block does not affect the packing of the polymer in the solid state. The synthesized diblock copolymers were subjected to hydroboration/oxidation and hydrosilation to demonstrate the reactivity of the alkenyl substituents. Furthermore, poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(3‐pentenylthiophene) was used as a chain transfer agent for the ruthenium‐catalyzed ring‐opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctene to generate a polycyclooctene graft copolymer, which was hydrogenated to give poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐b‐poly(3‐pentenylthiophene‐g‐polyethylene). Functionalization of polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) polymers with hydrogen‐bonding ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) groups leads to supramolecular thermoplastic elastomers. In previous studies, no lateral stacking of UPy dimers was observed in UPy‐functionalized polymers, unless additional urethane or urea groups were built into the hard block. However, we have shown that when PDMS is used as the soft block, this lateral aggregation of UPy dimers does take place, since long fibers could be observed in the atomic force microscopy (AFM) phase image. Also in bulk, the presence of these interactions was proven by oscillatory shear experiments. We attribute this aggregation to the incompatibility of soft block and hard block, leading to phase separation. Moreover, we have shown that additional urethane or urea groups in the hard block do lead to materials with more fibers and higher melting points. For the UPy‐urea functionalized PDMS even single fibers are observed with AFM when dropcasted from a very diluted solution. Some linear π‐conjugated polymers containing 2,4,6‐tris(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐1,3,5‐triazine unit were synthesized via Sonogashira or Suzuki reaction for the first time and characterized by IR, NMR, and GPC. Because of the introduction of 2,4,6‐tris(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐1,3,5‐triazine unit into π‐conjugated system, all polymers exhibited good thermal stability with high decomposition temperature. Their optical and electrochemical properties were investigated. Based on the 2,4,6‐tris(thiophen‐2‐yl)‐1,3,5‐triazine unit linked with different aromatic rings, the polymers showed the tunable fluorescence from blue to blue‐green emission with satisfied quantum yield. Cyclic voltammetry measurement indicated that the LUMO and HOMO levels of the polymers could be adjustable through the main‐chain structural modification. Regioregular poly(3‐hexylthiophene) has been successfully incorporated into a novel amphiphilic block copolymer. The amphiphilic nature of poly(3‐hexylthiophene)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) has been investigated using spectroscopic methods and has yielded solvatochromic behavior in several solvents of varying polarity. Evidence suggests that a supramolecular, long range ordering of block copolymer occurs in polar solvents, resulting in the formation of aggregates. Despite relatively large amounts of non‐conductive blocks, the poly(3‐hexylthiophene) diblock copolymer yields a high conductivity of 1 S · cm−1, and atomic force microscopy shows the formation of a highly organized nanofibrilar morphology in the solid state.

In the present study, a new (E)‐rich‐enyne π‐conjugated polymer containing a carbazole was designed and synthesized. Two different synthesis methods of poly[N‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3,6‐carbazolyleneethynylene‐(E)‐vinylene] (PCZEV) have been prepared from 3,6‐diethynyl‐9(2‐ethylhexyl)carbazole by using the palladium‐carbene‐catalyzed reaction and/or by using the organolanthanide‐catalyzed reaction leading to well‐defined polymer, and their general properties were studied. Compared to poly[N‐(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3,6‐carbazolyleneethynylene] (PCE), the UV‐vis absorption and photoluminescence of the PCZEV was red‐shifted, which indicates the extension of conjugation length. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel π‐conjugated polymers ( 8 – 10 ) were prepared by the palladium‐catalyzed Sonogashira coupling reaction of three kinds of phosphole‐ring‐containing monomers with 2,5‐dihexyloxyl‐1,4‐diethynylbenzene. The obtained polymers ( 8 – 10 ) were regioregulated with the 2,5‐substituted phosphole ring in the polymer main chain and characterized with 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR and FTIR. Polymers 8 – 10 were found to have an extended π‐conjugated system according to the results of UV–vis absorption spectra. In the fluorescence emission spectra of 8 – 10 , moderate emission peaks were observed in the visible blue‐to‐green region. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
