Polyethylene (PE) composites with titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles were produced via in situ polymerization representing a novel route to obtain antimicrobial polymeric materials. The TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by the sol–gel method were used either as‐synthesized or modified organically with hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (Mod‐TiO2). These particles were added, together with the catalytic system (formed by a metallocenic catalyst and methylaluminoxane as cocatalyst), directly to the reactor, yielding in situ PE composites with 2 and 8 wt % content of nanofiller. The catalytic polymerization activity presented a slight decrease with the incorporation of the TiO2 and Mod‐TiO2 nanoparticles compared to polymerization without filler. Regarding the properties of the composites, crystallinity increased slightly when the different nanofillers were added, and the elastic modulus increased around 15% compared to neat PE. PE/TiO2 nanocomposites containing 8 wt % of TiO2 exposed to UVA irradiations presented antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. The PE/Mod‐TiO2 nanocomposite with 8 wt % filler killed 99.99% of E. coli, regardless of light and time irradiation. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Monolayer polystyrene spheres (∼400 nm) array templates were assembled orderly on clean glass substrates by dip-drawing method from emulsion of PS and porous TiO2 thin films were prepared by using sol-dipping template method to fill TiO2 sol into the interstices among the close-packed PS templates and then annealing to remove the PS templates. The effects of TiO2 precursor sol concentration and dipping time in sol on the porous structure of the thin films were studied. The results showed pore size of the ordered TiO2 porous thin film depended mainly on PS size and partly on TiO2 sol concentration. The shrinkage of pore diameter was about 10% for 0.2 M and 20% for 0.4 M TiO2 sol concentrations. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra indicated the porous thin film was anatase structure. The transmittance spectrum showed that optical transmittance of the porous thin film kept above 70% beyond the wavelength of 430 nm. Optical band-gap of the porous TiO2 thin film (fired at 550∘;C) was 3.12 eV.  相似文献

A nanocomposite polymer electrolyte consisting of 49% poly(methyl methacrylate)-grafted natural rubber (MG49) as a polymer matrix, lithium tetrafluoroborate (LiBF4) as a dopant salt, and titanium dioxide (TiO2) as an inert ceramic filler was prepared by solution casting technique. The ceramic filler, TiO2, was synthesized in situ by a sol–gel process. The ionic conductivity was investigated by alternating current impedance spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used to determine the structure of the electrolyte, and its morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The highest conductivity, 1.4 × 10−5 S cm−1 was obtained at 30 wt.% of LiBF4 salt addition with 6 wt.% of TiO2 filler content. Ionic conductivity was found to increase with the increase of salt concentration. The optimum value of conductivity was found at 6 wt.% of TiO2. The XRD analysis revealed that the crystalline phase of the polymer host slightly decreased with the addition of salt and filler. The SEM analysis showed that the smoother the surface of the electrolyte, the higher its conductivity.

Ceramic ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes (TiO2) are prepared by sol-gel route using a special arrangement which allows the reaction of the reactants directly in the pores of a tubular Al2O3 support or on its surface, respectively. By this direct synthesis the number of technological steps can be reduced which is the main advantage of the method. The produced layers are well joined with the Al2O3 support and the reaction can be adjusted by various technological parameters. The dried and sintered coatings are characterized by X-Ray diffraction, FESEM and AFM. In addition, pore size distribution and filtration properties are investigated and discussed.  相似文献

Chemically crosslinked polyimide organic–inorganic composite nanofiltration membranes suitable for application in harsh organic solvents were successfully prepared by phase inversion of dope solutions. TiO2 nanoparticles were dispersed in these dope solutions, comprising polyimide (PI) in N,N-dimethylformamide/1,4-dioxane. The impact of TiO2 on the resulting PI membranes was investigated using SEM, TGA, water contact angle, dope viscosity measurements and mechanical strength. The presence of TiO2 nanoparticles within the membrane matrix was proved by the detection of a peak characteristic of TiO2 in the WAXS pattern. SEM pictures of the cross-section of the PI/TiO2 membranes showed dramatically changed morphology compared to reference membranes with no TiO2 addition. Macrovoids present in reference membranes were suppressed by increasing loading of TiO2 nanoparticles, and eventually disappeared completely at a TiO2 loading above 3 wt.%. Decreasing water contact angle and an increase in ethanol flux indicated that hydrophilicity increased as nanoparticle loading increased. The effect of TiO2 on the functional performance of the membranes was evaluated by measuring flux and rejection using cross-flow filtration. Perhaps surprisingly, the presence of TiO2 improved the compaction resistance of the membranes, whereas rejection and steady flux were almost unaltered.  相似文献

The nanoparticles of Yb3+-doped (0.125 wt.%) and pure TiO2 were prepared by an acid-catalyzed sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and surface photovoltage spectroscopy; the specific surface of the samples was measured using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue in aqueous solution was used as a probe reaction to estimate the photocatalytic activity of the prepared nanoparticles. The photocatalytic activity of Yb3+/TiO2 composite nanoparticles is much higher than that of pure TiO2. A low amount of Yb3+ in TiO2 can inhibit the anatase-rutile phase transformation of TiO2, prevent grain growth increasing the specific surface area, and favor the high-temperature stabilization of the pores. According to the surface voltage spectroscopy data, Tb3+-doping prevents recombination of photoinduced electrons and holes and improves the light absorption capacity of the particle surface. The kinetics of the topochemical reaction of methane dehydrogenation was studied using TRUMEM ultrafiltration membranes (TiO2 + Cr2O3 on porous steel, the size of transport pores 50 nm). The depth of the deposition of pyrocarbon nanocrystallites (PNC) into pores was determined. The depth of PNC deposition was estimated using scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution energy-dispersion spectrometry. The deposition of PNC at a 4.9 kPa methane pressure in the reaction zone created Knudsen conditions for methane diffusion in pores. The deposition of PNC therefore occurred over the whole area of pore surfaces. Studies of the kinetics of PNC formation on the surface of pores showed that reaction rate V and its constant k substantially depended on reaction duration. The influence of PNC deposition on the electrosurface properties and permeability of the membranes to ethanol and dodecane was studied. After the deposition of PNC with L c = 1.0–1.1 nm on the surface of pores, the ζ-potential and surface charge density (σ) decreased; simultaneously, the efficiency with respect to ethanol increased.  相似文献

The structure of porous TiO2 films and TiO2:poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) composite films is investigated with time-of-flight grazing incidence small-angle neutron scattering (TOF-GISANS). The TiO2 films have been prepared by application of a sol–gel process with a diblock copolymer as structure directing agent, and the conductive polymer PVK is infiltrated in the porous network by spin coating and solution casting. The films show a hierarchical pore structure with mesopores 52 nm in size and additional large macropores with a diameter of about 180 nm. By matching the scattering contrast of the TiO2 with the polymer information about the penetration of the polymer in the pores is determined. Whereas in the PVK film prepared by solution casting the pores are filled to a high degree; in the spin coated film, PVK wets only the TiO2 pore walls and forms a solid overlying layer. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In sol–gel processing, porous ceramic membranes can be prepared by sol-coating porous substrates and drying for gelling, followed by a firing process. Ceramic membranes prepared by sol–gel processing can be categorized into amorphous materials such as silica, and crystalline materials such as alumina and titania. Amorphous silica networks, which can be prepared by the polymeric sol route, have ultra-microporous pores that allow small molecules such as helium and hydrogen to permeate. On the other hand, crystalline materials, which are mostly prepared by the colloidal sol route, have nano-sized pores in the range of one to several nanometers. In this article, sol–gel derived SiO2 and TiO2 membranes with controlled pore sizes in the range of sub-nano to nanometers will be reviewed with respect to membrane preparation and to their application in the separation of the gas and liquid phases. Ceramic membranes with high performance can be obtained by precise control of membrane structures (pore size, pore size distribution, thickness, pore shape, etc.) and membrane materials (SiO2, TiO2, composite oxide, hybrid materials, etc.). Nano/subnano-tuning of porous ceramic membranes is quite important for the improvement of membrane permeability and selectivity.  相似文献

Adsorbents synthesized by grafting of titania onto mesoporous silica gel surfaces at different temperatures were studied by means of nitrogen adsorption–desorption and water desorption. The pore size distribution f(Rp) of titania/silica gel depends on the titania concentration (CTiO2) and the temperature of titania synthesis. Nonuniformity of TiO2 phase is maximal at a low CTiO2 value (3.2 wt.% anatase deposited at 473 K), and two peaks of the fractal dimension distribution f(D) are observed at such a concentration of titania, but at larger CTiO2 values, only one f(D) peak is seen. More ordered filling of pores and adsorption sites by nitrogen, reflecting in the shape of adsorption energy distributions f(E) at different pressures of adsorbate, is observed for adsorbent with titania (rutile+anatase) grafted on silica gel at a higher temperature (673 K).  相似文献

The pigment-protein complex of photosystem 1 (PS1) isolated from cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 has been adsorbed on a solid mesoporous film made from TiO2 nanoparticles. was on The TiO2 film supported on a glass substrate with a surface area of 1 cm2 adsorbs up to 0.045 nmol of PS1. PS1 molecules are distributed in the pores of the mesoporous support. Immobilization has an insignificant effect on the optical and photochemical properties of PS1. A reversible photoinduced EPR signal from the oxidized primary electron donor P700 of immobilized PS1 has been detected. It has been shown by photoelectrochemical methods that the photoexcitation of PS1 results in electron injection from PS1 to the conduction band of TiO2.  相似文献

We developed a method to characterize polymer‐supported polyacrylamide crosslinked hydrogel networks using a range of well‐defined poly(N, N‐dimethylacrylamide)‐coated gold nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 3 to 48 nm under ultrafiltration conditions of 16 bar. The membranes resulted in permeabilities ranging between 0.199 and 6.343 × 10?18 m2. There was a direct correlation between the size exclusion and the permeability rate coefficient, km; the higher the km value the larger the average pore size. Our results further demonstrate that the gold nanoparticles could be trapped within the membrane at the end of a cul‐de‐sacs found within the gel network, which often leads to membrane fouling. We believe that this method of using gold nanoparticles to characterize crosslinked membranes provides insight into the gel network, and will provide a unique tool to analyze new membranes. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Various ultrafiltration and nanofiltration membranes were characterized by solute transport and also by atomic force microscope (AFM). The molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of the membranes studied were found to be between 3500 and 98,000 Daltons. The mean pore size (μp) and the geometric standard deviation (σp) around mean ranged from 0.7 to 11.12 nm and 1.68 to 3.31, respectively, when calculated from the solute transport data. Mean pore sizes measured by AFM were about 3.5 times larger than calculated from the solute transport. Pore sizes measured by AFM were remarkably fitted to the log-normal probability distribution curve. Pore sizes of the membranes with low MWCO (20,000 Daltons and lower) could not be measured by AFM because of indistinct pores. In most cases, the pore density ranged from 38 to 1291 pores/μm2. In general, the pore density was higher for the membrane having lower MWCO. Surface porosity was around 0.5–1.0% as measured from the solute transport and was 9.5–12.9% as obtained from AFM images. When membranes were coated with a thin layer of sulfonated polyphenylene oxide, mean pore sizes were reduced for all the membranes. Surface roughness was also reduced on coating.  相似文献

A series of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) nanocomposites containing different types of nanofiller (TiO2, MWCNT, expanded graphite, and boehmite) were prepared by in situ polymerization using a tandem catalyst system composed of {TpMs}NiCl ( 1 ) and Cp2ZrCl2 ( 2 ), and analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Based on these analyses, the filler content varied from 1.30 to 1.80 wt %. The melting temperatures and degree of crystallinity of the LLDPE nanocomposites were comparable to those of neat LLDPE. The presence of MWCNT as well as boehmite nucleated the LLDPE crystallization, as indicated by the increased crystallization temperature. The DMA results showed that the presence of TiO2, EG, and CAM 9080 in the LLDPE matrix yielded nanocomposites with relatively inferior mechanical properties compared to neat LLDPE, suggesting heterogeneous distribution of these nanofillers into the polymer matrix and/or the formation of nanoparticle aggregates, which was confirmed by TEM. However, substantial improvement in the storage modulus was achieved by increasing the sonication time. The highest storage modulus was obtained using MWCNT (1.30 wt %). © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Chem. 2014 , 52, 3506–3512  相似文献

Reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology is widely employed to address the demands for freshwater. In this study, fabrication and performance evaluation of customized RO membranes comprised of Matrimid and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is carried out. While exploring adoption of slip coating procedure, the effects of various modification techniques including incorporation of TiO2 nanoparticles and polyethylene glycol (PEG) into the skin layer as well as cross‐linking were investigated. The individual and combined effects of parameters on membrane morphology, surface characteristics and performance were also examined. Despite the distinctive characteristics of involved materials, delamination‐free composite membranes were successfully formed with an intimate contact at the interface of two layers. The results also indicated that increasing concentration of Matrimid in dope solution led to increase in membrane thickness and consequently decline in water flux. In the best case, membrane prepared using 1 wt.% Matrimid in dope exhibited water flux of 0.98 LMH and NaCl rejection of 95.7%. Also, incorporation of 3 wt.% TiO2 nanoparticles offered membranes with improved water flux of 1.37 LMH and salt rejection of 95.8%. On the other hand, water flux and salt rejection in membranes containing 5 wt.% PEG were 1.18 LMH and 96.2%, respectively. The co‐presence of both nanoparticles and PEG provided more insights about the contributing factors in tuned membranes. Modification of skin layer by cross‐linking significantly improved salt rejection at the expense of water flux. The results are scientifically interpreted and compared to the values reported in literature.  相似文献

This study develops a simple method to change the distribution of the pore size in a TiO2 layer, using polyethylene glycol (PEG), while maintaining nearly the same surface area and porosity to clarify how large pores affect the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Specifically, a heating step at 100 °C for a specific duration is added prior to PEG removal and TiO2 sintering at 400 °C. This process transforms the role of the PEG from a surfactant to a pore generator (porogen) and forms larger pores, depending on the loading and aggregation time for the PEG to gain larger pores. The effect of larger pores in TiO2 films under 30 % PEG loading, on the performance of an agarose gel electrolyte-based DSSC, was further investigated using the ionic liquid, 1-allyl-3-ethylimidazolium iodide (AEII). The IV characteristic and the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis show that larger pores readily improve redox couple diffusion in a TiO2 porous electrode and modify the interface between electrolyte and TiO2. Using the optimized TiO2 film with larger pores (30 % PEG loading, 100 °C/60 min), an efficiency of 7.43 % is achieved for the agarose gel electrolyte-based DSSC, which represents a 26.1 % improvement over TiO2 without the addition of PEG.  相似文献

Open‐cell hydrophilic polymer foams are prepared through oil‐in‐water Pickering high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs). The Pickering HIPEs are stabilized by commercial titania (TiO2) nanoparticles with adding small amounts of non‐ionic surfactant Tween85. The morphologies, such as average void diameter and interconnectivity, of the foams can be tailored easily by varying the TiO2 nanoparticles and Tween85 concentrations. Further, investigation of the HIPE stability, emulsion structure and the location of TiO2 nanoparticles in resulting foams shows that the surfactant tends to occupy the oil‐water interface at the contact point of adjacent droplets, where the interconnecting pores are hence likely to be formed after the consolidation of the continuous phase. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Highly photoactive bi-phase nanocrystalline TiO2 photocatalyst was prepared by a solvent evaporation-induced crystallization (SEIC) method, and calcined at different temperatures. The obtained TiO2 photocatalyst was characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and BET surface areas. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photocatalytic oxidation of acetone in air. The results show that solvent evaporation can promote the crystallization and phase transformation of TiO2 at 100°C. When calcination temperatures are below 600°C, the prepared TiO2 powders show bimodal pore size distributions in the mesoporous region. At 700°C, the pore size distributions exhibit monomodal distribution of the inter-aggregated pores due to the collapse of the intra-aggregated pores. At 100°C, the obtained TiO2 photocatalyst by this method shows good photocatalytic activity, and at 400°C, its photocatalytic activity exceeds that of Degussa P25. This may be attributed to the fact that the prepared TiO2 photocatalyst has higher specific surface areas, smaller crystallite size and bimodal pore size distribution.  相似文献

In the present work, nanofibrous composite polymer electrolytes consist of polyethylene oxide (PEO), ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), lithium perchlorate (LiClO4), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) were designed using response surface method (RSM) and synthesized via an electrospinning process. Morphological properties of the as‐prepared electrolytes were studied using SEM. FTIR spectroscopy was conducted to investigate the interaction between the components of the composites. The highest room temperature ionic conductivity of 0.085 mS.cm?1 was obtained with incorporation of 0.175 wt. % TiO2 filler into the plasticized nanofibrous electrolyte by EC. Moreover, the optimum structure was compared with a film polymeric electrolyte prepared using a film casting method. Despite more amorphous structure of the film electrolyte, the nanofibrous electrolyte showed superior ion conductivity possibly due to the highly porous structure of the nanofibrous membranes. Furthermore, the mechanical properties illustrated slight deterioration with incorporation of the TiO2 nanoparticles into the electrospun electrolytes. This investigation indicated the great potential of the electrospun structures as all‐solid‐state polymeric electrolytes applicable in lithium ion batteries.  相似文献
