Summary. In this paper we consider two aspects of the problem of designing efficient numerical methods for the approximation of semilinear boundary value problems. First we consider the use of two and multilevel algorithms for approximating the discrete solution. Secondly we consider adaptive mesh refinement based on feedback information from coarse level approximations. The algorithms are based on an a posteriori error estimate, where the error is estimated in terms of computable quantities only. The a posteriori error estimate is used for choosing appropriate spaces in the multilevel algorithms, mesh refinements, as a stopping criterion and finally it gives an estimate of the total error. This paper introduces a new type of full multigrid method for the elasticity eigenvalue problem. The main idea is to avoid solving large scale elasticity eigenvalue problem directly by transforming the solution of the elasticity eigenvalue problem into a series of solutions of linear boundary value problems defined on a multilevel finite element space sequence and some small scale elasticity eigenvalue problems defined on the coarsest correction space. The involved linear boundary value problems will be solved by performing some multigrid iterations. Besides, some efficient techniques such as parallel computing and adaptive mesh refinement can also be absorbed in our algorithm. The efficiency and validity of the multigrid methods are verified by several numerical experiments.  相似文献

A least-squares spectral collocation method for the one-dimensional inviscid Burgers equation is proposed. This model problem shows the stability and high accuracy of these schemes for nonlinear hyperbolic scalar equations. Here we make use of a least-squares spectral approach which was already used in an earlier paper for discontinuous and singular perturbation problems (Heinrichs, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 157:329–345, 2003). The domain is decomposed in subintervals where continuity is enforced at the interfaces. Equal order polynomials are used on all subdomains. For the spectral collocation scheme Chebyshev polynomials are employed which allow the efficient implementation with Fast Fourier Transforms (FFTs). The collocation conditions and the interface conditions lead to an overdetermined system which can be efficiently solved by least-squares. The solution technique will only involve symmetric positive definite linear systems. The scheme exhibits exponential convergence where the exact solution is smooth. In parts of the domain where the solution contains discontinuities (shocks) the spectral solution displays a Gibbs-like behavior. Here this is overcome by some suitable exponential filtering at each time level. Here we observe that by over-collocation the results remain stable also for increasing filter parameters and also without filtering. Furthermore by an adaptive grid refinement we were able to locate the precise position of the discontinuity. Numerical simulations confirm the high accuracy of our spectral least-squares scheme.   相似文献

This paper attempts to present a meshless method to find the optimal control of a parabolic distributed parameter system with a quadratic cost functional. The method is based on radial basis functions to approximate the solution of the optimal control problem using collocation method. In this regard, different applications of RBFs are used. To this end, the numerical solutions are obtained without any mesh generation into the domain of the problems. The proposed technique is easy to implement, efficient and yields accurate results. Numerical examples are included and a comparison is made with an existing result.  相似文献

This article proposes and analyzes a multilevel stabilized finite volume method(FVM) for the three‐dimensional stationary Navier–Stokes equations approximated by the lowest equal‐order finite element pairs. The method combines the new stabilized FVM with the multilevel discretization under the assumption of the uniqueness condition. The multilevel stabilized FVM consists of solving the nonlinear problem on the coarsest mesh and then performs one Newton correction step on each subsequent mesh thus only solving one large linear systems. The error analysis shows that the multilevel‐stabilized FVM provides an approximate solution with the convergence rate of the same order as the usual stabilized finite element solution solving the stationary Navier–Stokes equations on a fine mesh for an appropriate choice of mesh widths: hjhj‐12, j = 1,…,J. Therefore, the multilevel stabilized FVM is more efficient than the standard one‐level‐stabilized FVM. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numer Methods Partial Differential Eq, 2013  相似文献

A new method is developed for solving optimal control problems whose solutions are nonsmooth. The method developed in this paper employs a modified form of the Legendre–Gauss–Radau orthogonal direct collocation method. This modified Legendre–Gauss–Radau method adds two variables and two constraints at the end of a mesh interval when compared with a previously developed standard Legendre–Gauss–Radau collocation method. The two additional variables are the time at the interface between two mesh intervals and the control at the end of each mesh interval. The two additional constraints are a collocation condition for those differential equations that depend upon the control and an inequality constraint on the control at the endpoint of each mesh interval. The additional constraints modify the search space of the nonlinear programming problem such that an accurate approximation to the location of the nonsmoothness is obtained. The transformed adjoint system of the modified Legendre–Gauss–Radau method is then developed. Using this transformed adjoint system, a method is developed to transform the Lagrange multipliers of the nonlinear programming problem to the costate of the optimal control problem. Furthermore, it is shown that the costate estimate satisfies one of the Weierstrass–Erdmann optimality conditions. Finally, the method developed in this paper is demonstrated on an example whose solution is nonsmooth.

In this paper, we present the multilevel adaptive wavelet collocation method for solving non-divergent barotropic vorticity equation over spherical geodesic grid. This method is based on multi-dimensional second generation wavelet over a spherical geodesic grid. The method is more useful in capturing, identifying, and analyzing local structure [1] than any other traditional methods (i.e. finite difference, spectral method), because those methods are either full or partial miss important phenomena such as trends, breakdown points, discontinuities in higher derivatives of the solution. Wavelet decomposition is used for interpolation and adaptive grid refinement on different levels.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the following problem:The quadratic spline collocation, with uniform mesh and the mid-knot points are taken as the collocation points for this problem is considered. With some assumptions, we have proved that the solution of the quadratic spline collocation for the nonlinear problem can be written as a series expansions in integer powers of the mesh-size parameter. This gives us a construction method for using Richardson's extrapolation. When we have a set of approximate solution with different mesh-size parameter a solution with high accuracy can he obtained by Richardson's extrapolation.  相似文献

The application of some recently proposed algebraic multilevel methods for the solution of two-dimensional finite element problems on nonuniform meshes is studied. The locally refined meshes are created by the newest vertex mesh refinement method. After the introduction of this refinement technique it is shown that, by combining levels of refinement, a preconditioner of optimal order can be constructed for the case of local refinement along a line. Its relative condition number is accurately estimated. Numerical tests demonstrating the performance of the proposed preconditioners will be reported in a forthcoming paper.  相似文献

A B-spline collocation method is presented for nonlinear singularly-perturbed boundary-value problems with mixed boundary conditions. The quasilinearization technique is used to linearize the original nonlinear singular perturbation problem into a sequence of linear singular perturbation problems. The B-spline collocation method on piecewise uniform mesh is derived for the linear case and is used to solve each linear singular perturbation problem obtained through quasilinearization. The fitted mesh technique is employed to generate a piecewise uniform mesh, condensed in the neighborhood of the boundary layers. The convergence analysis is given and the method is shown to have second-order uniform convergence. The stability of the B-spline collocation system is discussed. Numerical experiments are conducted to demonstrate the efficiency of the method.  相似文献

Summary The object of this paper is the numerical solution of nonlinear two-point boundary value problems by Newton's method applied to the discretized problem on successively refined grids. The first part consists of a theoretical development of a phenomenon that often occurs in practice, namely, that the number of iterations for Newton's method to converge to within a fixed tolerance and for a fixed starting vector is essentially independent of the mesh size. The second part develops a process based on these results for determining an efficient mesh refinement strategy. Numerical results are also provided. This work was supported by N.S.F. grant GJ42626  相似文献

The basic theory of the strengthened Cauchy–Buniakowskii–Schwarz (C.B.S.) inequality is the main tool in the convergence analysis of the recently proposed algebraic multilevel iterative methods. An upper bound of the constant γ in the strengthened C.B.S. inequality for the case of the finite element solution of 2D elasticity problems is obtained. It is assumed that linear triangle finite elements are used, the initial mesh consisting of right isosceles triangles and the mesh refinement procedure being uniform. For the resulting linear algebraic systems we have proved that γ2<0.75 uniformly on the mesh parameter and on Poisson's ratio ν ? (0, 1/2). Furthermore, the presented numerical tests show that the same relation holds for arbitrary initial right triangulations, even in the case of degeneracy of triangles. The theoretical results obtained are practically important for successful implementation of the finite element method to large-scale modeling of complicated structures. They allow us to construct optimal order algebraic multilevel iterative solvers for a wide class of real–life elasticity problems.  相似文献

We present a pathfollowing strategy based on pseudo-arclength parametrization for the solution of parameter-dependent boundary value problems for ordinary differential equations. We formulate criteria which ensure the successful application of this method for the computation of solution branches with turning points for problems with an essential singularity. The advantages of our approach result from the possibility to use efficient mesh selection, and a favorable conditioning even for problems posed on a semi-infinite interval and subsequently transformed to an essentially singular problem. This is demonstrated by a Matlab implementation of the solution method based on an adaptive collocation scheme which is well suited to solve problems of practical relevance. As one example, we compute solution branches for the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation which start from non-monotone ‘multi-bump’ solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Following the branches around turning points, real-valued solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation can easily be computed.  相似文献

We develop a method for adaptive mesh refinement for steady state problems that arise in the numerical solution of Cahn–Hilliard equations with an obstacle free energy. The problem is discretized in time by the backward-Euler method and in space by linear finite elements. The adaptive mesh refinement is performed using residual based a posteriori estimates; the time step is adapted using a heuristic criterion. We describe the space–time adaptive algorithm and present numerical experiments in two and three space dimensions that demonstrate the usefulness of our approach.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with a numerical scheme to solve a singularly perturbed convection-diffusion problem. The solution of this problem exhibits the boundary layer on the right-hand side of the domain due to the presence of singular perturbation parameter ε. The scheme involves B-spline collocation method and appropriate piecewise-uniform Shishkin mesh. Bounds are established for the derivative of the analytical solution. Moreover, the present method is boundary layer resolving as well as second-order uniformly convergent in the maximum norm. A comprehensive analysis has been given to prove the uniform convergence with respect to singular perturbation parameter. Several numerical examples are also given to demonstrate the efficiency of B-spline collocation method and to validate the theoretical aspects.  相似文献

The computational modeling of failure mechanisms in solids due to fracture based on sharp crack discontinuities suffers in situations with complex crack topologies. This can be overcome by diffusive crack modeling, based on the introduction of a crack phase field as outlined in [1, 2]. Following these formulations, we outline a thermodynamically consistent framework for phase field models of crack propagation in elastic solids, develop incremental variational principles and, as an extension to [1, 2], consider their numerical implementations by an efficient h-adaptive finite element method. A key problem of the phase field formulation is the mesh density, which is required for the resolution of the diffusive crack patterns. To this end, we embed the computational framework into an adaptive mesh refinement strategy that resolves the fracture process zones. We construct a configurational-force-based framework for h-adaptive finite element discretizations of the gradient-type diffusive fracture model. We develop a staggered computational scheme for the solution of the coupled balances in physical and material space. The balance in the material space is then used to set up indicators for the quality of the finite element mesh and accounts for a subsequent h-type mesh refinement. The capability of the proposed method is demonstrated by means of a numerical example. (© 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

This paper presents an efficient adaptive analysis procedure being able to operate in the framework of the node-based smoothed point interpolation method (NS-PIM). The NS-PIM uses three-node triangular cells and is very easy to be implemented, which make it an ideal candidate for adaptive analysis. In the present adaptive procedure, a new error indicator is devised for NS-PIM settings; two ways are proposed to calculate the local critical value; a simple h-type local refinement scheme is adopted and Delaunay technology is used for regenerating optimal new mesh. A number of typical numerical examples involving stress concentration and solution singularities have been tested. The results demonstrate that the present procedure achieves much higher convergence rate results compared to the uniform refinement, and can obtain upper bound solution in strain energy.  相似文献

Collocation with quadratic C 1-splines for a singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem in one dimension is studied. A modified Shishkin mesh is used to resolve the layers. The resulting method is shown to be almost second order accurate in the maximum norm, uniformly in the perturbation parameter. Furthermore, a posteriori error bounds are derived for the collocation method on arbitrary meshes. These bounds are used to drive an adaptive mesh moving algorithm. Numerical results are presented.  相似文献

Summary. We consider an indirect boundary integral equation formulation for the mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary value problem for the Laplace equation on a plane domain with a polygonal boundary. The resulting system of integral equations is solved by a collocation method which uses a mesh grading transformation and a cosine approximating space. The mesh grading transformation method yields fast convergence of the collocation solution by smoothing the singularities of the exact solution. A complete stability and solvability analysis of the transformed integral equations is given by use of a Mellin transform technique, in a setting in which each arc of the polygon has associated with it a periodic Sobolev space. In this paper, adaptive finite element method is developed for the estimation of distributed parameter in elliptic equation. Both upper and lower error bound are derived and used to improve the accuracy by appropriate mesh refinement. An efficient preconditioned project gradient algorithm is employed to solve the nonlinear least-squares problem arising in the context of parameter identification problem. The efficiency of our error estimators is demonstrated by some numerical experiments.   相似文献
