Charpy drop‐weight‐impact and essential work of fracture (EWF) characteristics of maleic anhydride (MA)‐compatibilized styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS)/polypropylene (PP) blends and their composites reinforced with short glass fibers (SGFs) were investigated. MA was grafted to either SEBS copolymer (SEBS‐g‐MA) or PP (PP‐g‐MA). The mPP blend was prepared by the compounding of 95% PP and 5% PP‐g‐MA. Drop‐weight‐impact results revealed that the mPP specimen had an extremely low impact strength. The incorporation of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomers into mPP improved its impact strength dramatically. Similarly, the addition of SEBS was beneficial for enhancing the impact strength of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids. A scanning electron microscopy examination of the fractured surfaces of impact specimens revealed that the glass‐fiber surfaces of the SGF/SEBS/mPP and SGF/SEBS‐g‐MA/mPP hybrids were sheathed completely with deformed matrix material. This was due to strong interfacial bonding between the phase components of the hybrids associated with the MA addition. Impact EWF tests were carried out on single‐edge‐notched‐bending specimens at 3 m s?1. The results showed that pure PP, mPP, and the composites only exhibited specific essential work. The nonessential work was absent in these specimens under a high‐impact‐rate loading condition. The addition of SEBS or SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer to mPP increased both the specific essential and nonessential work of fracture. This implied that elastomer particles contributed to the dissipation of energy at the fracture surface and in the outer plastic zone at a high impact speed of 3 m s?1. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The toughening mechanisms of polypropylene filled with elastomer and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) particles were studied. Polypropylene/elastomer/CaCO3 composites were prepared on a twin‐screw extruder with a particle concentration of 0–32 vol %. The experiments included tensile tests, notched Izod impact tests, scanning electron microscopy, and dynamic mechanical analysis. Scanning electron microscopy showed that the elastomer and CaCO3 particles dispersed separately in the matrix. The modulus of the composites increased, whereas the yield stress decreased with the filler concentration. The impact resistance showed a large improvement with the CaCO3 concentration. At the same composition (80/10/10 w/w/w), three types of CaCO3 particles with average diameters of 0.05, 0.6, and 1.0 μm improved the impact fracture energies comparatively. The encapsulation structure of the filler by the grafting elastomer had a detrimental effect on the impact properties because of the strong adhesion between the elastomer and filler and the increasing ligament thickness. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polypropylene (PP) was modified with elastomer or CaCO3 particles of two different sizes (1 μm and 50 nm) in various volume fractions. The dispersion morphology and mechanical properties of the two systems were investigated as functions of the particle size and volume fraction of the modifier. The brittle‐to‐tough transition occurred when the matrix ligament thickness was less than the critical ligament thickness, which was about 0.1 μm for the PP used here, being independent of the type of modifier. At the same matrix ligament thickness, the improvement of the toughness was obviously higher with the elastomer rather than with CaCO3, but adding CaCO3 increased the modulus of PP. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The viscoelastic properties of binary blends of nitrile rubber (NBR) and isotactic polypropylene (PP) of different compositions have been calculated with mean‐field theories developed by Kerner. The phase morphology and geometry have been assumed, and experimental data for the component polymers over a wide temperature range have been used. Hashin's elastic–viscoelastic analogy principle is used in applying Kerner's theory of elastic systems for viscoelastic materials, namely, polymer blends. The two theoretical models used are the discrete particle model (which assumes one component as dispersed inclusions in the matrix of the other) and the polyaggregate model (in which no matrix phase but a cocontinuous structure of the two is postulated). A solution method for the coupled equations of the polyaggregate model, considering Poisson's ratio as a complex parameter, is deduced. The viscoelastic properties are determined in terms of the small‐strain dynamic storage modulus and loss tangent with a Rheovibron DDV viscoelastometer for the blends and the component polymers. Theoretical calculations are compared with the experimental small‐strain dynamic mechanical properties of the blends and their morphological characterizations. Predictions are also compared with the experimental mechanical properties of compatibilized and dynamically cured 70/30 PP/NBR blends. The results computed with the discrete particle model with PP as the matrix compare well with the experimental results for 30/70, 70/30, and 50/50 PP/NBR blends. For 70/30 and 50/50 blends, these predictions are supported by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigations. However, for 30/70 blends, the predictions are not in agreement with SEM results, which reveal a cocontinuous blend of the two. Predictions of the discrete particle model are poor with NBR as the matrix for all three volume fractions. A closer agreement of the predicted results for a 70/30 PP/NBR blend and the properties of a 1% maleic anhydride modified PP or 3% phenolic‐modified PP compatibilized 70/30 PP/NBR blend in the lower temperature zone has been observed. This may be explained by improved interfacial adhesion and stable phase morphology. A mixed‐cure dynamically vulcanized system gave a better agreement with the predictions with PP as the matrix than the peroxide, sulfur, and unvulcanized systems. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Dynamically cured polypropylene (PP)/epoxy blends compatibilized with maleic anhydride grafted PP were prepared by the curing of an epoxy resin during melt mixing with molten PP. The morphology and crystallization behavior of dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were studied with scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy. Dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends, with the structure of epoxy particles finely dispersed in the PP matrix, were obtained, and the average diameter of the particles slightly increased with increasing epoxy resin content. In a study of the nonisothermal crystallization of PP and PP/epoxy blends, crystallization parameter analysis showed that epoxy particles could act as effective nucleating agents, accelerating the crystallization of the PP component in the PP/epoxy blends. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of PP and dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were described by the Avrami equation. The results showed that the Avrami exponent of PP in the blends was higher than that of PP, and the crystallization rate was faster than that of PP. However, the crystallization rate decreased when the epoxy resin content was greater than 20 wt %. The crystallization thermodynamics of PP and dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends were studied according to the Hoffman theory. The chain folding energy for PP crystallization in dynamically cured PP/epoxy blends decreased with increasing epoxy resin content, and the minimum of the chain folding energy was observed at a 20 wt % epoxy resin content. The size of the PP spherulites in the blends was obviously smaller than that of PP. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 1181–1191, 2004  相似文献

Highly exfoliated isotactic‐polypropylene/alkyl‐imidazolium modified montmorillonite (PP/IMMT) nanocomposites have been prepared via in situ intercalative polymerization. TEM and XRD results indicated that the obtained composites were highly exfoliated PP/IMMT nanocomposites and the average thickness of IMMT in PP matrix was less than 10 nm, and the distance between adjacent IMMT particles was in the range of 20–200 nm. The isothermal crystallization kinetics of highly exfoliated PP/IMMT nanocomposites were investigated by using differential scanning calorimeter(DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). The crystallization half‐time t1/2, crystallization peak time tmax, and the Avrami crystallization rate constant Kn showed that the nanosilicate layers accelerate the overall crystallization rate greatly due to the nucleation effect, and the crystallization rate was increased with the increase in MMT content. Meanwhile, the crystallinity of PP in nanocomposites decreased with the increase in clay content which indicated the PP chains were confined by the nanosilicate layers during the crystallization process. Although the well‐dispersed silicate layers did not have much influence on spherulites growth rate, the nucleation rate and the nuclei density increased significantly. Accordingly, the spherulite size decreased with the increase in MMT content. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 47: 2215–2225, 2009  相似文献

A series of biodegradable, thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers poly(?‐caprolactone‐co‐lactide(polyurethane [PCLA–PU] were synthesized from a random copolymer of L ‐lactide (LA) and ?‐caprolactone (CL), hexamethylene diisocyanate, and 1,4‐butanediol. The effects of the LA/CL monomer ratio and hard‐segment content on the thermal and mechanical properties of PCLA–PUs were investigated. Gel permeation chromatography, IR, 13C NMR, and X‐ray diffraction were used to confirm the formation and structure of PCLA–PUs. Through differential scanning calorimetry, tensile testing, and tensile‐recovery testing, their thermal and mechanical properties were characterized. Their glass‐transition temperatures were below ?8 °C, and their soft domains became amorphous as the LA content increased. They displayed excellent mechanical properties, such as a tensile strength as high as 38 MPa, a tensile modulus as low as 10 MPa, and an elongation at break of 1300%. Therefore, they could find applications in biomedical fields, such as soft‐tissue engineering and artificial skin. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(propylene) (PP)/PP grafted styrene‐butadiene rubber (PP‐g‐SBR) nanocomposite was prepared by blending PP with PP‐g‐SBR using dynamical photografting. The crystal morphological structure, thermal behavior, and mechanical properties of PP/PP‐g‐SBR nanocomposites have been studied by photoacoustic Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (PAS‐FT‐IR), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and mechanical measurements. The data obtained from the mechanical measurements show that the PP‐g‐SBR as a modifier can considerably improve the mechanical properties of PP/PP‐g‐SBR nanocomposites, especially for the notched Izod impact strength (NIIS). The NIIS of the nanocomposite containing 2 wt% PP‐g‐SBR measured at 20°C is about 2.6 times that of the control sample. The results obtained from PAS‐FTIR, WAXD, SEM, and DSC measurements revealed the enhanced mechanism of impact strength of PP/PP‐g‐SBR nanocomposites as follows: (i) the β‐type crystal of PP formed and its content increased with increasing the photografting degree of PP‐g‐SBR; (ii) the size of PP‐g‐SBR phase in the PP/PP‐g‐SBR nanocomposites obviously reduced and thus the corresponding number of PP‐g‐SBR phase increased with increasing the photografting degree of PP‐g‐SBR. All the earlier changes on the crystal morphological structures are favorable for increasing the compatibility and enhancing the toughness of PP at low temperature. The influence of low contents of a liquid crystalline polymer on the crystallization and melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) was investigated using electron and optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction. In pure iPP, the α modification was found, whereas for iPP/Vectra blends at Vectra concentration <5%, both α and β forms were observed. The amount of β phase varied from 0.23 to 0.16. Optical microscopy showed that Vectra was able to nucleate both α and β forms. Non-isothermal crystallization produces a material with a strong tendency for recrystallization of the α and β forms (αα′ and ββ′ recrystallization) leading to double endotherms for both crystalline forms in DSC thermograms. Melting thermograms after isothermal crystallization at low temperatures showed a similar behavior. At values of Tc > 119 °C for the α form and Tc > 125 °C for the β form, only one melting endotherm was observed because enough perfect crystals, not susceptible to recrystallization, were obtained. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Morphology development during isothermal crystallization in equal molecular weight isotactic polypropylene (iPP), syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP), and iPP/sPP blends was studied with time‐resolved simultaneous small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) with synchrotron radiation. The sPP melting point is 15–20 °C below that of the iPP component, and sPP multiple melting is not affected by blending for 50–100 wt % sPP compositions. SAXS and WAXD (at 115 and 137.5 °C) show that sPP crystallizes more slowly than iPP. The sPP long spacing is larger than that of iPP at both crystallization temperatures, exhibits a broader distribution, and changes to a greater extent during crystallization. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) cooling and SAXS/WAXD measurements show iPP crystallizing first and nearly to completion before sPP in a 50:50 iPP/sPP blend. At 115 °C, iPP crystals nucleate sPP in a 50:50 blend and modify the sPP lamellar spacing. The nucleation does not overcome the large difference in the iPP and sPP rates at 137.5 °C. Before sPP crystallization in a 50:50 blend (115 °C), the iPP long spacing is not affected by molten sPP. The iPP long spacing is slightly expanded by molten sPP, and the WAXD induction time is delayed at 137.5 °C. The observed iPP long spacing in the presence of molten sPP is consistent with previously reported results for iPP/atactic polypropylene (aPP) blends of similar molecular weight. Quantitative differences between the two types of blends are consistent with previously reported thermodynamic rankings. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The application of Friedel‐Crafts alkylation reaction to the compatibilization of polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS) blends was assessed. A PP macrocarbocation is chemically bonded to the PS benzene ring by aromatic electrophilic substitution. The graft copolymer formed at the interphase (PP‐g‐PS) showed relatively high emulsification strength, suggesting an effective behavior as in situ compatibilizer. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) was related to Friedel‐Crafts catalyst concentration. The amount of PS grafting and possible appearance of crosslinking and chain scission side reactions were also analyzed. The reaction products were characterized by a combination of size exclusion chromatography and Fourier transform infrared techniques applied after a careful solvent extraction separation. It was found, from the emulsification curve, that CMC was achieved when 0.7 wt % AlCl3 was added. This value was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy observation of phase adhesion on fractured sample surfaces. Mass balances of extracted PS showed that at least 15 wt % of the initial PS resulted grafted at the CMC condition. Chain scission reactions, in parallel with grafting, were verified to occur for PP as well as for PS. Instead, crosslinking reactions were not detected. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Blends of polyamide‐1010 (PA1010) and a thermoplastic poly(ester urethane) elastomer (TPU) were prepared by melt extrusion. The impact properties, phase structure, compatibility, and fracture morphology under impact were investigated for PA1010/TPU blends. The results indicated that TPU enhanced the impact strength of PA1010, and the best impact modification effect of the blends was obtained with 20 wt % TPU. The phase structure was investigated with scanning electron microscopy, and the compatibility was investigated with dynamic mechanical analysis and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The study of the fracture morphology of PA1010/TPU blends indicated that the fracture surface of the blends had special features, consisting of many fibrillar elastomer particles and a conglutination–multilayer structure, as well as many small tubers on this structure. These fracture phenomena could not be found on the fracture surface of pure PA1010. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 1177–1185, 2005  相似文献

Impact‐modified polypropylene (PP)/vermiculite (VMT) nanocomposites toughened with maleated styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene (SEBS‐g‐MA) were compounded in a twin‐screw extruder and injection‐molded. VMT was treated with maleic anhydride, which acted both as a compatibilizer for the polymeric matrices and as a swelling agent for VMT in the nanocomposites. The effects of the impact modifier on the morphology and the impact, static, and dynamic mechanical properties of the PP/VMT nanocomposites were investigated. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that an exfoliated VMT silicate layer structure was formed in ternary (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT nanocomposites. Tensile tests showed that the styrene–ethylene butylene–styrene additions improved the tensile ductility of the (PP–SEBS‐g‐MA)/VMT ternary nanocomposites at the expense of their tensile stiffness and strength. Moreover, Izod impact measurements indicated that the SEBS‐g‐MA addition led to a significant improvement in the impact strength of the nanocomposites. The SEBS‐g‐MA elastomer was found to be very effective at converting brittle PP/VMT organoclay composites into tough nanocomposites. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Physically and dynamically vulcanized (TPV) mixtures of polypropylene (PP) and ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) are prepared by extrusion in order to improve the impact resistance of PP. To enhance the chemical compatibility and provide better interaction between the PP and EPDM in the physical mixtures, both polymers are modified with maleic anhydride (MAH) in solution using xylene as solvent and dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as initiator. The qualitative and quantitative determination of the degree of grafting is study by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and varying the amount of DCP and/or amount of MAH in order to determine the optimum amounts to obtain the highest degree of grafting. The effect of the relation of PP/EPDM, the amount of reinforcement filler and mix rate are studied for modified polymer mixtures (PP-g-MAH/EPDM-g-MAH). For the TPV of PP/EPDM the effects of amount and triallylisocyanurate (TAC) as coupling agent in presence of different amounts of DCP are studied. The physical mixtures of modified polymers prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 80/20 and the TPVs blends prepared with a PP/EPDM ratio of 70/30 and containing 15% filler at 60 rpm show the highest impact resistance. The impact resistance, melt flow index and hardness of the different mixtures are measured to determine their possible applications to prepare front panels and bumpers for automobiles by injection molding.  相似文献

Reliable experimental data for semicrystalline polymers crystallized under pressure are supplied on the basis of a model experiment in which drastic solidification conditions are applied. The influence of the pressure and cooling rate on some properties, such as the density and microhardness, and on the product morphology, as investigated with wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS), is stressed. Results for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) samples display a lower density and a lower microhardness with increasing pressure over a wide range of cooling rates (from 0.01 to 20 °C/s). Polyamide‐6 (PA6) samples exhibit the opposite behavior, with the density and microhardness increasing at higher pressures over the entire range of cooling rates investigated (from 1 to 200 °C/s). A deconvolution technique applied to iPP and PA6 WAXS patterns has allowed us to evaluate the final phase content and to assess the crystallization kinetics. A negative influence of pressure on the α‐crystalline phase crystallization kinetics can be observed for iPP, whereas a slightly positive influence of pressure on the crystallization kinetics of PA6 can be noted. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Various elastomeric polypropylenes (PPs) are synthesized through homogeneous propylene polymerization with metallocene catalyst (2‐PhInd)2ZrCl2 in the presence of different cocatalyst mixtures: triethylaluminum (TEA)/methylaluminoxane (MAO) or triisobutylaluminum (TIBA)/MAO in the range of AlAlR3/AlMAO = 0.0–0.9. The cocatalyst formulation impacts the resultant polymer microstructure and the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties of the produced PPs. 13C NMR analysis of the polymers reveals essentially atactic PP, with mmmm = 7.9%, when AlAlR3/AlMAO = 0.0. The mmmm pentad content is maximized when AlAlR3/AlMAO = 0.8; for TIBA, mmmm = 23.5%; and for TEA, mmmm = 17.6%. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis corroborate these findings. Specifically, Tm, ΔHm, and Tg are essentially maximized under these conditions, and the minimum damping is observed for AlAlR3/AlMAO = 0.6–0.8. 1H NMR analysis of the mixtures of catalyst and cocatalysts (without monomer) shows very minor differences for [Zr]:AlAlR3 in the range of 1:1–1:5. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The development of lamellar morphology in poly(oxymethylene) (POM) and its miscible blends was studied by synchrotron time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), during primary and secondary crystallization at temperatures near 150°C. The blends contained two different diluents: poly(vinyl 4-hydroxy styrene) [common name poly(vinyl phenol), (PVP)], which had a high glass temperature (Tg = 150°C), and styrene-co-hydroxy styrene oligomer (PhSO), which had a low glass temperature (Tg = −37°C). The SAXS data were analyzed by correlation function analysis to extract several lamellar parameters: long period (L), lamellar crystalline thickness (lc), amorphous layer thickness (la), and invariant (Q). The variation in Q defined the region where spherulites quickly grew and filled the entire space, and was referred to as the primary crystallization dominant regime. A rapid drop in L and lc was observed at early times, and this can be explained by defective lamellar stacks filling in space between primary stacks, as secondary crystals form during the nominal primary crystallization dominant regime. Lamellar thickening with time in the long-time secondary crystallization region was observed in neat POM and the blend with 10 % low Tg diluent, while this process was inhibited with the high Tg diluent due to the higher Tg of the interlamellar species. A decrease in la at long times confirmed the lamellar thickening. We refer to the lamellar thickening process as a type of secondary crystallization. Interlamellar inclusion or trapping was detected to different degrees with the high Tg diluent, while exclusion was found for the low Tg diluent. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We have developed a morphologic method to investigate the relaxation processing of the stretched polymer chains in melts, in which an atomic force microscope probe was used to shear the surface of an isotactic polypropylene melt to obtain the isolated shish‐kebab structure. We present the results of the time dependence of length of the isolated shish‐kebab structure and the stress dependence of the kebab density along the direction of shish in this paper. Our results demonstrate that the shear‐oriented polymer melts show the relaxation dynamics of worm‐like chain where the length deficit of the isolated shish‐kebab structure is scaled with the relaxation time as a power of 1/3. The melting behavior of shish‐kebab structure was also investigated. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2013, 51, 907–914  相似文献

Nanocomposites were prepared by adding 1–3 vol % multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) to polyamide 6 (PA6), polypropylene (PP), and their co‐continuous blends of 60/40 and 50/50 volume compositions. Because of the good interaction and interfacial adhesion to the PA6, nanotubes were disentangled and distributed evenly through nanocomposites containing PA6. In contrast, lack of active interactions between the matrix and the CNTs resulted in poor tube dispersion in PP. These observations were then verified by studying the rheology and electrical conductivity of their respective nanocomposites. Absence of percolated CNT clusters and possible wrapping of the tubes by PA6 resulted in low electrical conductivity of PA6/CNT nanocomposites. On the other hand, despite the weak dispersion of the tubes, electrical conductivities of PP/CNT nanocomposites were much higher than all other counterparts. This could be the result of good three‐dimensional distribution of the agglomerated bundles and secondary aggregation of tubes in PP. Adding CNTs to blends of PA6/PP (60/40 and 50/50) resulted in almost full localization of carbon nanotubes in PA6, leading to their higher effective concentration. At the same CNT loadings, the blend nanocomposites had three to seven orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity than pure PA6. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym.
