The microstructure and molecular orientation distribution over both the length and the thickness of microinjection‐molded linear low‐density polyethylene with a weld line were characterized as a function of processing parameters using small‐angle X‐ray scattering and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction techniques. The weld line was introduced via recombination of two separated melt streams with an angle of 180° to each other in injection molding. The lamellar structure was found to be related to the mold temperature strongly but the injection velocity and the melt temperature slightly. Furthermore, the distributions of molecular orientation at different molding conditions and different positions in the cross section of molded samples were derived from Hermans equation. The degree of orientation of polymeric chains and the thickness of oriented layers decrease considerably with an increase of both mold temperature and melt temperature, which could be explained by the stress relaxation of sheared chains and the reduced melt viscosity, respectively. The level of molecular orientation was found to be lowest in the weld line when varying injection velocity, mold temperature, and melt temperature, thus providing an effective means to identify the position of weld line induced by flow obstacles during injection‐molding process. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Compatibilization of blends of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and polystyrene (PS) with block copolymers of styrene (S) and butadiene (B) or hydrogenated butadiene (EB) has been studied. The morphology of the LLDPE/PS (50/50) composition typically with 5% copolymer was characterized primarily by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEB and SEBS copolymers were effective in reducing the PS domain size, while the SB and SBS copolymers were less effective. The noncrystalline copolymers lowered the tensile modulus of the blend by as much as 50%. Modulus calculations based on a coreshell model, with the rubbery copolymer coating the PS particle, predicted that 50% of the rubbery SEBS copolymer was located at the interface compared to only 5–15% of the SB and SBS copolymers. The modulus of blends compatibilized with crystalline, nonrubbery SEB and SEBS copolymers approached Hashin's upper modulus bound. An interconnected interface model was proposed in which the blocks selectively penetrated the LLDPE and PS phases to provide good adhesion and improved stress and strain transfer between the phases. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

In this study, ethylene/styrene interpolymer (ESI) was used as compatibilizer for the blends of polystyrene (PS) and low‐density polyethylene (LDPE). The mechanical properties including impact, tensile properties, and morphology of the blends were investigated by means of uniaxial tension, instrumented falling‐weight impact measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. Impact measurements indicated that the impact strength of the blends increases slowly with LDPE content up to 40 wt %; thereafter, it increases sharply with increasing LDPE content. The impact energy of the LDPE‐rich blends exceeded that of pure LDPE, implying that the LDPE polymer can be further toughened by the incorporation of brittle PS minor phase in the presence of ESI. Tensile tests showed that the yield strength of the PS/LDPE/ESI blends decreases considerably with increasing LDPE content. However, the elongation at break of the blends tended to increase significantly with increasing LDPE content. The compatibilization efficiency of ESI and polystyrene‐hydrogenated butadiene‐polystyrene triblock copolymers (SEBS) for PS/LDPE 50/50 was further compared. Mechanical properties show that ESI is more effective to achieve a combination of LDPE toughness and PS rigidity than SEBS. The correlation between the impact property and morphology of the ESI‐compatibilized PS/LDPE blends is discussed. The excellent tensile ductility of the LDPE‐rich blends resulted from shield yielding of the matrix. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 45: 2136–2146, 2007  相似文献

The effect of weld line on the morphology and mechanical properties of 70/30 polystyrene and polyamide-6 blends with various amounts of poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) (SMA) as compatibilizer was investigated. For blends without or with low content of SMA, the dispersed domains near the weld line were elongated parallel to the weld line; and the dispersed domains in weld line were spherical. But for blend with high content of SMA, the isotropic morphology was observed. And the difference of morphology at weld line caused the distinction of fracture mechanism. The tensile strength of the blend is greatly influenced by the morphology of dispersed domains at weld line. While the morphology has only slight effect on impact strength of the blends.  相似文献

The effect of a small admixture of high‐density polyethylene (HDPE) with a high or low viscosity to polystyrene/polyamide (PS/PA) blends of various compositions was studied. PS/PA blends with composition near 50/50 form sheet‐like or fiber‐like morphology at mixing that passes to the cocontinuous structure during compression molding. Ternary PS/PA/HDPE blends with PS/PA ratio about 50/50 show similar behavior. Generally, neither continuity nor shape of PS and PA phases was changed qualitatively by the addition of a small amount of HDPE. In agreement with existing rules for ternary blends, HDPE particles prefer a contact with PS phase to PA phase. On the other hand, none of these rules explains why a number of small HDPE subinclusions were dispersed into PS particles instead of HDPE‐PS core‐shell structure with a lower Gibbs free energy. Quantitative evaluation of the size of PA particles in blends with PS matrix showed that the previously proposed rule stating, that the addition of a small amount of a third immiscible component leads to a strong decrease in the size of dispersed particles, was not valid for the blends studied in this work. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Water assisted injection molding (WAIM) has gradually become one of the most important polymer processing methods for making hollowed parts. This study examined the morphological development in water assisted injection molded high density polyethylene (HDPE)/polyamide‐6 (PA‐6) blends. Samples for microscopic observation were prepared by an 80‐ton injection‐molding machine equipped with a tube cavity and with a water injection unit. A distinct skin layer, core region, and channel layer were observed across the thickness. The shape and size of the dispersed phase depended on the position both across the part thickness and along the flow direction. Small and large particles coexisted in the skin and channel layers, indicating that both coalescence and disintegration of the dispersed phase occurred in these layers. High water pressures were found to mold parts with smaller polyamide particle distributions. Additionally, the morphology of water assisted injection molded parts was compared to that of gas assisted injection molded products. It was found that water molded parts exhibit a smaller polyamide particle distribution than their gas counterparts. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The impact propylene copolymer(IPC)and isotactic polypropylene(iPP)were separately selected to prepare laminates with high density polyethylene(HDPE)by hot press. The peel forces of IPC/HDPE and i’PP/HDPE laminates were examined, and it was found that the welded joint strength in IPC/HDPE laminate was dramatically higher than that of iPP/HDPE laminate.According to the special microstructure of IPC,the co-crystallization of the ethylene segments in ethylene-propylene block copolymer(EbP)component of IPC and the PE chain in HDPE was proposed to explain the high-strength welding. The DSC results indicated that there indeed existed some interaction between IPC and HDPE,and the crystallizable PE component in IPC could affect the crystallization of HDPE.The scanning electron microscope(SEM) observations of IPC/HDPE blends demonstrated that HDPE tended to stay with the PE-rich EbP chains to form the dispersed phase, indicating the good miscibility between HDPE and EbP components of IPC.According to the above results, the effect of co-crystallization of the PE components of the IPC and HDPE on the high weld strength of IPC/HDPE laminate was confirmed.  相似文献

The effects of ultrasonic oscillations on linear viscoelastic behaviors of metallocene‐catalyzed linear low density polyethylene (mLLDPE) and its blends with low density polyethylene (LDPE) were investigated in this article. The experimental results showed that ultrasonic oscillations can increase the cross modulus, characteristic time, plateau modulus, complex viscosity, zero shear viscosity, and flow activation energy of mLLDPE. Molecular weight of mLLDPE increases but molecular polydispersity index decreases in the presence of ultrasonic oscillations. It has been found for mLLDPE/LDPE blends that the addition of LDPE as well as ultrasonic oscillations can decrease the cross modulus but increase the characteristic time of the blends. The complex viscosity, zero shear viscosity, and flow activation energy of the blends increase by the addition of LDPE, but decrease in the presence of ultrasonic oscillations. Shear thinning effect of the blends is improved because of the addition of LDPE. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 43: 3030–3043, 2005  相似文献

The effects of morphology and molecular composition on the electrical strength of blends of linear and branched polyethylenes were investigated. A range of blend systems were considered, in which both the molecular mass of the linear polymer and the comonomer in the branched component were varied. All the blends contained 10% linear polyethylene and 90% branched polymer and, in each system, three crystallization procedures were employed to modify the morphology. Isothermal crystallization at 124 °C generally resulted in compact linear inclusions within a branched matrix; isothermal crystallization at 115 °C produced a space‐filling network of open, spherulitic structures; and quenching gave a banded spherulitic morphology. In these systems, the electrical strength, as measured by ramp testing, was dependent on the morphology of the material but was not influenced per se by significant changes in the molecular composition of the blend. The effect of crosslinking was also examined; the inclusion of a network did not, in itself, affect the breakdown strength or the morphology. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The stability against the thermal annealing of a cocontinuous two‐phase morphology developed in polystyrene (PS)/low‐density polyethylene (LDPE) blends containing 80 wt % PS was investigated. Blends containing 1, 5, and 10 wt % of a tapered diblock poly(styrene‐block‐hydrogenated butadiene) (P(S‐b‐hB)) or triblock poly(styrene‐block‐hydrogenated butadiene‐block‐styrene) (P(S‐hB‐S)) copolymer were melt‐blended with roll‐mill mixing equipment. The efficiency of each of the two copolymers in stabilizing against coalescence the cocontinuous morphology was examined. The tensile properties of the resulting blends, annealed and nonannealed, were also examined in relation to the morphology induced by thermal annealing. The phase morphology was studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. With computer‐aided image analysis, it was possible to obtain a measurable characteristic parameter to quantify the cocontinuous phase morphology. When it was necessary, the extraction of one phase with a selective solvent was performed. Although the observed differences were subtle, the tapered diblock exhibited a more efficient compatibilizing activity than the triblock copolymer, particularly at a low concentration of about 2 wt %. The superiority of the tapered diblock over the triblock might be due to its ability to quantitatively locate at the LDPE/PS interface and consequently form a more efficient barrier against the subsequent breakup of the elongated structures of the cocontinuous phase morphology. The tensile properties of the triblock‐modified blends were more sensitive to thermal annealing than the tapered‐modified ones. This deficiency was ascribed to the phase morphology coarsening of the dispersed polyethylene phase. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 202–216, 2003  相似文献

Nylon-6/polystyrene (PS) blends were reactively compatibilized by addition of various anhydride functionalized polystyrenes. The morphology of the blends was examined using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique. The particle size of the dispersed styrenic phase was about 3.2 μm for the uncompatibilized 8/2 Nylon-6/PS blend while those of the compatibilized blends were decreased by as much as two orders of magnitude depending on the amount and type of the functionalized polystyrene (FPS) added. Several low-molecular weight polystyrenes with terminal anhydride groups, prepared by two different functionalization methods, were examined. The effect of molecular weight on particle size reduction depended on the basis of comparison, mass of additive, or moles of anhydride units. A high-molecular weight random copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride was most effective when compared on a mass basis. The increase in adhesion between the Nylon-6 and the styrenic phases caused by the in situ reaction was evaluated by a lap shear technique. The free polystyrene, Nylon-6, and Nylon-FPS copolymer formed were separated by solvent extraction technique using formic acid and toluene. The extent of coupling reaction between the functionalized polystyrenes and Nylon-6 ranged from 25 to 43%. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Blends of linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) with polystyrene (PS) and blends of LLDPE with high‐impact polystyrene (HIPS) were prepared through a reactive extrusion method. For increased compatibility of the two blending components, a Lewis acid catalyst, aluminum chloride (AlCl3), was adopted to initiate the Friedel–Crafts alkylation reaction between the blending components. Spectra data from Raman spectra of the LLDPE/PS/AlCl3 blends extracted with tetrahydrofuran verified that LLDPE segments were grafted to the para position of the benzene rings of PS, and this confirmed the graft structure of the Friedel–Crafts reaction between the polyolefin and PS. Because the in situ generated LLDPE‐g‐PS and LLDPE‐g‐HIPS copolymers acted as compatibilizers in the relative blending systems, the mechanical properties of the LLDPE/PS and LLDPE/HIPS blending systems were greatly improved. For example, after compatibilization, the Izod impact strength of an LLDPE/PS blend (80/20 w/w) was increased from 88.5 to 401.6 J/m, and its elongation at break increased from 370 to 790%. For an LLDPE/HIPS (60/40 w/w) blend, its Charpy impact strength was increased from 284.2 to 495.8 kJ/m2. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs showed that the size of the domains decreased from 4–5 to less than 1 μm, depending on the content of added AlCl3. The crystallization behavior of the LLDPE/PS blend was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry. Fractionated crystallization phenomena were noticed because of the reduction in the size of the LLDPE droplets. The melt‐flow rate of the blending system depended on the competition of the grafting reaction of LLDPE with PS and the degradation of the blending components. The degradation of PS only happened during the alkylation reaction between LLDPE and PS. Gel permeation chromatography showed that the alkylation reaction increased the molecular weight of the blend polymer. The low molecular weight part disappeared with reactive blending.

The effect of phase‐separated morphology on the rheological properties of polystyrene/poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PS/PVME) blend was investigated by optical microscopy (OM), light scattering (LS) method, and rheology. The blend had a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of 112°C obtained by turbidity experiment using LS at a heating rate of 1°C/h. Three different blend compositions (critical 30/70 PS/PVME by weight) and two off‐critical (50/50 and 10/90)) were prepared. The rheological properties of each composition were monitored with phase‐separation time after a temperature jump from a homogeneous state to the preset phase‐separation temperature. For the 30/70 and 50/50 blends, it was found that with phase‐separation time, the storage and loss moduli (G′ and G″) increased at shorter times due to the formation of co‐continuous structures resulting from spinodal decomposition. Under small oscillatory shearing, shear moduli gradually decreased with time at longer phase‐separation times due to the alignment of co‐continuous structures toward the flow direction, as verified by scanning electron microscopy. However, for the 10/90 PS/PVME blend, the rheological properties did not change with phase‐separation times. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 37: 889–906, 1999  相似文献

The effect of mixing conditions on the morphology, molten‐state viscoelastic properties, and tensile impact strength of polystyrene/polyethylene (80/20) blends compatibilized with styrene–butadiene block copolymers containing various numbers and lengths of blocks was studied. Under all mixing conditions, an admixture of a styrene–butadiene block copolymer led to a finer phase structure and to an increase in the dynamic viscosity, storage modulus, and tensile impact strength. The effects were stronger for S–B diblock with a short styrene block than for S–B–S–B–S pentablock with long styrene blocks (where S represents styrene and B represents butadiene). For all blends mixed longer than 2 min, the mixing time had only a small effect on their morphology and properties. Surprisingly, the localization of S–B diblock copolymers was strongly dependent on the rate of mixing. The mixing rate had a nonnegligible effect on the viscoelastic properties of the compatibilized blends. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 609–622, 2003  相似文献

In this work, completely immiscible polyethylene/polyamidel2 (PE/PA12) blends were prepared by high shear extruder. The morphology and mechanical properties of the blends were investigated as a function of rotation speed. It wasfound that the high shear processing is an effective method to improve the dispersion of the PAl2 phase in PE matrix whenPAl2 contents are 5 wt% and 10 wt%,and the dispersed phase particle size is reduced with the increase of rotation speed from 100 r/min to 500 r/min.However,with further increase of PAl2 content to 20 wt%,high shear processing has no effect on the phase morphology of the blends.Accordingly,a largely increased elongation at break and impact strength are observed for PE/PA12/95/5 and PE/PA12/90/10 blends obtained at high rotation speeds but no effect on the property of PE/PA12/80/20.Annealing experiment demonstrated that the obtained phase morphology is not stable thus compatibilizer should be introduced in the future work. This work could provide a guideline for the application of high shear processing in the preparation of polymer blends with huge polarity difference.  相似文献

In this study, helium/oxygen/nitrogen (He/O2/N2)‐plasma was used to etch/modify the surface of ultra‐high‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber. After coated with polyurethane (PU), the plasma treated UHMWPE fabrics were laminated. It was found that the values of peeling strength between the laminated UHMWPE fabrics treated with He/O2/N2‐plasma were significantly higher (3–4 times) than that between pristine fabrics. The hydrophilic property and the value of the surface roughness of the UHMWPE fibers increased significantly after treated with He/O2/N2‐plasma. The mechanism of the oxidation/degradation of the polymers on the surface of the UHMWPE fiber during He/O2/N2‐plasma treatment was suggested. In addition, it was found that the higher content of functional groups (carbonyl, aldehyde, and carboxylic acid) on fiber surface and the higher value of surface roughness of the UHMWPE fiber treated with He/O2/N2‐plasma could significantly improve the adhesion‐strength of the laminated UHMWPE fabric. Especially, the micro‐aperture on the surface of UHMWPE fiber caused by the strenuous etching of He/O2/N2‐plasma treatment was also an important factor on improving the adhesion‐strength between the laminated UHMWPE fabrics. The polypropylene‐g‐polystyrene (PP‐g‐PS) copolymers with different grafting ratios are used as compatibilizers to control the size of polystyrene (PS) particles at nanometer scale in polypropylene (PP) matrix. Then the PP/PS insulating nanocomposites (containing 10 wt % PS calculated from PS and PP‐g‐PS) are manufactured. With the increase in grafting ratio of PP‐g‐PS, the size of PS particle is reduced and the interfacial adhesion is enhanced. Meanwhile, the dielectric properties, DC breakdown strength and volume resistivity are increased with the decreasing of PS particle size. The spherulite size of PP is decreased and the boundary between crystals and amorphous regions is blurred or even disappears due to the presence of PS nanoparticles. This evolution of PP structure is attributed to the serious entanglements of PP and PS molecular chains. Finally, the correlation between morphological structure and electrical properties is ultimately established based on the in‐depth understanding of the molecular chain movement, crystal structure, and phase morphology. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The mechanical behaviors of a polyethylene (PE) bulk consisting of amorphous molecular chains under uniaxial tension have been explored using molecular simulations. The stress–strain relationship and the plastic deformations of the PE bulk have been analyzed. Two deformation stages were found in the stress–strain curve, the elastic stage with a straight linear part of the curve and the plastic stage with a flat sawtooth‐like part. The Young's modulus calculated from the elastic part is in good agreement with experimental results. Some key parameters such as the energy variations in different terms reveal that the interchain slip should be chiefly responsible for the initial plastic deformations of amorphous PE under uniaxial tension. In order to address how this slip influences the plastic deformations, the mechanical details of a single chain have been elucidated when it was pulled out from two PE clusters consisting of regular and amorphous chains, respectively. The interchain slip, found as the basic movement style, is responsible for the movement of the stretched chain. Both the critical slip force and the critical slip length have been found in these two cases. For the straight chain pulled out from the cluster with regular chains, the critical slip force is about 1.81 nN and the critical slip length is about 40 polymerization degrees. While for the chain in the amorphous cluster, the critical force is about 0.86 nN and the critical length is almost the same. Based on the simulation results, a meso slip model has been deduced to explain the behaviors of the amorphous PE bulk under uniaxial tension. With reference to the slip model of single crystals and polycrystals a constitutive relation was obtained by considering the Young's modulus, the equivalent slip stress and the average orientation parameters of each chain. The comparison of the results from the constitutive relation and the simulations proves that this model does well in predicting the mechanical behaviors of amorphous PE under uniaxial tension in general. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polypropylene (PP)/polystyrene (PS)/montmorillonite (MMT) blends were prepared by an innovative eccentric rotor extruder based on continuous elongational flow. Addition of MMT nanoparticles was found to reduce the PS droplet size and improve the compatibility of PP/PS. The MMT nanoparticles had clear intercalation and/or exfoliation structures and were located mostly at the interface of PP/PS. It was found that the intercalation and exfoliation of MMT was finished under the synergy of interfacial interaction and tensile deformation so that we called the mechanism as “MMT exfoliation mechanism induced by synergy of interface and tensile deformation”. The rheological analysis showed that incorporation of MMT led to an increase in complex viscosity to an optimum level (5 wt%), after which any further increase in MMT concentration decreased the complex viscosity. Moreover, the degree of crystallinity of blends was controlled by the heterogeneous nucleation effect of MMT and the inhibition effect of PS.  相似文献
