The solubility of N2 in poly(α‐n‐hexyl‐β,L ‐aspartate), a stereoregular poly(β‐peptide), was investigated with atomistic Monte Carlo simulations. The structure of this material is intermediate between that of polymers able to form a three‐dimensional crystal lattice and that of liquid‐crystalline polymers with a biphasic distribution. The dependence of the calculated solubility coefficients on both the parameters of the force field and the temperature was examined. The results are compared with recently reported experimental data. Furthermore, the motion of the penetrant molecules within the polymer matrix was analyzed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 41: 2928–2936, 2003  相似文献

The water‐vapor permeability of poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PA‐18) was measured as a function of temperature in the region traversing its melting point (50 °C). The molten‐state permeability of PA‐18 is comparable to that of shorter side‐chain methacrylate polymers. Water permeability in the semicrystalline state of PA‐18 is similar to that of polyethylene at comparable crystallinity levels. The permeation switch, or change in permeability with the traversing of the melting point, for water is discussed in the context of previous results for other penetrants in this and other side‐chain crystalline polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A strategy to study polymeric systems with ordered structures, and in particular comb‐like polymers, is presented. These are dense systems for which atomistic simulations with conventional methods are difficult or even impracticable. The strategy, which has been incorporated into a computer program named MCDP, is based on a Configuration Bias Monte Carlo algorithm and a method to investigate the structure of crystalline polymers using force‐field calculations. To obtain a maximum efficiency, the MCDP computer program has been optimized and parallelized. The ability of MCDP to investigate ordered polymers have been tested by simulating two complex systems: (1) the crystal structure of poly(4‐methyl‐1‐pentene), and (2) the biphasic structure of poly(α‐octyl‐β‐L‐aspartate), a comb‐like polyamide derived from β‐amino acids. The results obtained from MCDP simulations demonstrates the efficiency and reliability of this method to study both the NVT and NPT behavior of ordered dense polymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Amorphous polymers exhibit a primary (glass, or α‐) relaxation process and a low‐temperature relaxation process associated with polymer backbone motion usually referred to as the β‐relaxation process. The latter process can be observed below the glass transition temperature of the polymer and usually merges with the α‐relaxation process at temperatures somewhat above the glass transition temperature. While it is widely held that both the α‐relaxation and β‐relaxation processes are engendered by localized (segmental) motions of the polymer backbone, and that there is a strong mechanistic connection between them, the molecular mechanisms of the α‐relaxation and β‐relaxation processes in amorphous polymers are not well understood. Recently, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of melts and blends of 1,4‐polybutadiene have provided insight into the relationship between the α‐ and β‐relaxation processes in glass‐forming polymers and an improved understanding of their molecular origins. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A computational strategy to model the amorphous phase of comblike polymers is presented. The strategy, denoted SuSi/CB (CB-configurational bias), combines the strength of an algorithm recently developed to generate reliable microstructures of dense amorphous polymers, which is based on a random search of energy minima, and configurational bias Monte Carlo method. The influence of different parameters used to define the characteristics of SuSi/CB on both the reliability of the generated structures and the computational effort has been examined in detail. Finally, we have modeled and characterized the supramolecular organization of poly(octadecyl acrylate) in the amorphous state.  相似文献

Optically active homopolymers and copolymers, bearing chiral units at the side chain and end chain, were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) techniques. The well‐defined optically active polymers were obtained via the ATRP of pregnenolone methacrylate (PR‐MA), β‐cholestanol acrylate (CH‐A), and 20‐(hydroxymethyl)‐pregna‐1,4‐dien‐3‐one acrylate (HPD‐A) with ethyl 2‐bromopropionate as the initiator and CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as the catalytic system. The experimental results showed that the polymerizations of PR‐MA, CH‐A, and HPD‐A proceeded in a living fashion, providing pendent chiral group polymers with low molecular weight distributions and predetermined molecular weights that increased linearly with the monomer conversion. Furthermore, the copolymers poly(pregnenolone methacrylate)‐b‐poly[(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate] and poly(pregnenolone methacrylate‐co‐methyl methacrylate) were synthesized and characterized with 1H NMR, transmission electron microscopy, and polarimetric analysis. In addition, when optically active initiators estrone 2‐bromopropionate and 20‐(hydroxymethyl)‐pregna‐1,4‐dien‐3‐one 2‐bromopropionate were used for ATRPs of methyl methacrylate and styrene, terminal optically active poly(methyl methacrylate) and polystyrene were obtained. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel amphiphilic graft copolymer consisting of hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) backbones and hydrophobic poly(butyl methacrylate) side chains was synthesized by successive atom transfer radical polymerization followed by hydrolysis of poly‐(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone. A grafting‐from strategy was employed for the synthesis of graft copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index < 1.40). Hydrophobic side chains were connected to the backbone through stable C? C bonds instead of ester connections. Poly(methoxymethyl acrylate) backbone was easily hydrolyzed to poly(acrylic acid) backbone with HCl without affecting the hydrophobic side chains. The amphiphilic graft copolymer could form stable micelles in water. The critical micelle concentration in water was determined by a fluorescence probe technique. The morphology of the micelles was preliminarily explored with transmission electron microscopy and was found to be spheres. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The degradation of poly(fluoroalkyl acrylate)s with long perfluoroalkyl groups, especially with perfluorooctyl group, leads to the release of biopersistent perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) or perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). To find the environmentally friendly substitutes, a series of nonbiopersistant fluorinated polymers containing perfluorohexyl groups in the side chains have been synthesized and characterized. This study was then focused on the role played by the main chain and spacer group located in the side chain between the backbone and the fluorinated segment and, in particular, on the properties of poly[2‐[[[[2‐(perfluorohexyl)]‐sulfonyl]methyl]amino]ethyl] acrylate (PC6SA), methacrylate (PC6SMA) and poly[(perfluorohexyl)ethyl] methacrylate (PC6MA). Surface properties and bulk organization of fluorinated side chains of those polymers were investigated by contact angles, differential scanning calorimetry, optical polaring microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering. Results were compared with those obtained with poly[(perfluorohexyl) ethyl] acrylate (PC6A). They all had very low surface free energies. Surprisingly, with the same perfluoalkyl chain, PC6SA and PC6SMA with a N‐methylsulfonamide spacer group were found to be organized in a liquid crystalline lamellar structure, whereas PC6A and PC6MA were found to be amorphous. This was mainly attributed to the steric term and polarity of N‐methylsulfonamide group that tended to facilitate the orientation of the perfluorinated segments in smectic phases. PC6SA, PC6SMA, and PC6MA had rich dynamic water repellency because of the low surface molecular mobility. This phenomenon relates to the crystallization of side chains or high glass transition temperature. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 48: 2584–2593, 2010  相似文献

The conformational mode change of the stiff alkylated polymer, poly(3-dodecyl thiophene) (PDDT), with a flexible comb-like coil poly(octadecyl acrylate) (PODA), and the effect of intermolecular interaction between these two alkylated polymers with different chemical structure of the backbone were investigated using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), and wide-angle x-ray diffraction (WAXD). In addition to the characteristics of thermochromism, a homogeneous one phase was observed above 175°C when the PODA content was 10 wt % or less. Increased conductivity in the PDDT/PODA blend due to the highly conjugated π-system of PDDT backbone was observed in the presence of nonelectroactive PODA. A red-shift of absorption maximum of PDDT/PODA blend observed in solid state at room temperature. From the FTIR spectra, the gauche-trans conformational structure change of methylene units was investigated in two alkylated polymer blends. The increase of combined heat of fusion of the alkyl side chain melting of PDDT and the endothermic peak of PODA, as well as the interlayer d-spacing of PDDT main chain were also observed with the addition of PODA in blends. A more ordered conformational structure of rigid rod backbone of PDDT was induced due to the attractive intermolecular interaction which can cause cocrystallization between the alkylated side chains of two polymers. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Electrical relaxation and conductivity processes in amorphous and semicrystalline poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) homopolymers and certain PET/PEN copolymers have been studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy. Homopolymers and copolymers able to crystallize were subjected to successive thermal runs to investigate the influence of the thermal history upon the morphology and the electrical behavior of the polymeric systems. The morphology of the untreated as well as the heat‐treated specimens was determined by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). All samples exhibit β‐relaxation process, due to local motions of the C?O polar side groups, and α‐relaxation process associated to the glass/rubber transition. In the PEN spectrum an additional, subglass, mode was recorded, most probably attributed to cooperative motions of the naphthalene groups. Finally, the dynamic nature of the crystallization process is expressed via the over glass transition mode and the temperature dependence of dc conductivity recorded in amorphous PET, PEN, and PET/PEN (85/15) (wt/wt) samples. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A 1H NMR and rheological study of host‐guest complexation interactions between three β‐cyclodextrin and three adamantyl substituted poly(acrylate)s, and also between them and adamantan‐1‐carboxylate and native β‐cyclodextrin, respectively, is reported. A close correllation between molecular level interactions and macroscopic characteristics of polymer networks in aqueous solution exists. It is found that intra‐ and intermolecular host‐guest complexation between the host β‐cyclodextrin and guest adamantyl substituents and the length of the aliphatic tether between them and the poly(acrylate) backbone have important roles. Dominantly, steric effects and competitive intra‐ and intermolecular host‐guest complexation are found to control poly(acrylate) isomeric interstrand linkage in polymer network formation. The preparations of five new 3% randomly substituted poly(acrylate)s are reported. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 48: 1818–1825, 2010  相似文献

Well‐defined end‐functionalized polystyrene, poly(α‐methylstyrene), and polyisoprene with polymerizable aziridine groups were synthesized by the termination reactions of the anionic living polymers of styrene, α‐methylstyrene, and isoprene with 1‐[2‐(4‐chlorobutoxy)ethyl]aziridine in tetrahydrofuran at ?78 °C. The resulting polymers possessed the predicted molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.1) as well as aziridine terminal moieties. The cationic ring‐opening polymerization of the ω‐monofunctionalized polystyrene having an aziridinyl group with Et3OBF4 gave the polymacromonomer, whereas the α,ω‐difunctional polystyrene underwent crosslinking reactions to afford an insoluble gel. Crosslinking products were similarly obtained by the reaction of the α,ω‐diaziridinyl polystyrene with poly(acrylic acid)‐co‐poly(butyl acrylate). © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fibers were drawn from polymers of octadecyl acrylate, octadecyl methacrylate, N-octadecylacrylamide, and a series of N-substituted acrylamides with a second amide group in the side chain as well as from copolymers of octadecyl and methyl esters of acrylic and methacrylic acid. Wide-angle and small-angle x-ray diffraction patterns were recorded for these materials. The interpretation of the characteristic difference between the behavior of the polycrylates and polymethacrylates, as proposed by Platé and his collaborators, is found to be inconsistent with a number of features of the experimental evidence. In the case of poly(octadecyl methacrylate) the data allow the estimation of two parameters of the electron density distribution in the side-chain crystallites. With polyacrylamide derivatives, a second amide group in the side chain is found to destabilize the side chain crystallites. The bahavior of the copolymers is very complex and exhibits, in one case, evidence for a long periodicity parallel to the fiber axis.  相似文献

The phase behavior and crystallization of graft copolymers consisting of poly(n‐hexyl methacrylate) (PHMA) as an amorphous main chain and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as crystallizable side chains (HMAx with 15 ≤ x ≤ 73, where x represents the weight percentage of PEG) were investigated. Small‐angle X‐ray scattering profiles measured above the melting temperature of PEG suggested that a microdomain structure with segregated PHMA and PEG domains was formed in HMA40 and HMA46. This phase behavior was qualitatively described by a calculated phase diagram based on the mean‐field theory. Because of the segregation of PEG into microdomains, the crystallization temperature of the PEG side chains in HMAx was higher than that in poly(methyl acrylate)‐graft‐poly(ethylene glycol) having a similar value of x, which was considered to be in a disordered state above the melting temperature. In HMAx with x ≤ 40, PEG crystallization was strongly restricted, probably because the PEG microdomains were isolated in the PHMA matrix. As a result, the growth of PEG spherulite was not observed because the PEG crystallization occurred after vitrification of the PHMA segregated domains. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Diblock star polymers were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization from a palladium porphyrin macroinitiator. The arms of the star polymers had an amphiphilic design, with the central Pd-porphyrin surrounded by a relatively hydrophobic block of poly(butyl acrylate) and terminated by a hydrophilic block of poly(oligoethyleneglycol monomethylether monomethacrylate). The size of both the interior and exterior blocks of the polymer arms were tuned over a wide range of molecular weights with the exterior block used to solubilize the stars in polar media. The star polymers showed enhanced reactivity in the oxidation of 2-furaldehyde relative to a small molecule porphyrin, suggesting that the polymer backbone aids with catalytic turnover. Oxygen diffusion studies indicate that the polymer backbone shields the porphyrin excited state from oxygen quenching. Shielding is independent of molecular weight and polymer composition, but it is not pronounced enough to retard the rate of singlet oxygen generation under preparative photooxidation conditions. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers consisting of amorphous main chain, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), or poly(methyl acrylate) (PMAc), and crystalline side chains, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), have been prepared by copolymerization of PEG macromonomers with methyl methacrylate or methyl acrylate (MMAx or MACx, respectively). Because of the compatibility of PMMA/PEG and PMAc/PEG, from small‐angle X‐ray scattering results, the main and side chains in graft copolymers were suggested to be homogeneous in the molten state. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) cooling scans revealed that PEG side chains for graft copolymers with large PEG fractions were crystallized when the sample was cooled, with a cooling rate of 10 °C/min. The spherulite pattern observed by a polarized optical microscope suggested the growth of PEG crystalline lamellae. Crystallization of PEG in MMAx was more restrained than in MACx. From these results, we have concluded that the crystallization behavior of the grafted side chains is strongly influenced by the glass transition of a homogeneously molten sample as well as dilution of the crystallizable chains. Domain spacings for isothermally crystallized graft copolymers were described by interdigitating chain packing in crystalline–amorphous lamellar structure. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heteroarm H‐shaped terpolymers, (polystyrene)(poly(methyl methacrylate))‐ poly(tert‐butyl acrylate)‐(polystyrene)(poly(methyl methacrylate)), (PS)(PMMA)‐PtBA‐(PMMA)(PS), and, (PS)(PMMA)‐poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG)‐(PMMA)(PS), through click reaction strategy between PS‐PMMA copolymer (as side chains) with an alkyne functional group at the junction point and diazide end‐functionalized PtBA or PEG (as a main chain). PS‐PMMA with alkyne functional group was prepared by sequential living radical polymerizations such as the nitroxide mediated (NMP) and the metal mediated‐living radical polymerization (ATRP) routes. The obtained H‐shaped polymers were characterized by using 1H‐NMR, GPC, DSC, and AFM measurements. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 45: 1055–1065, 2007  相似文献

α,α‐Dibromotoluene 1 was found to be polymerized by the reaction with excess Mg to give poly(phenylmethylene)s 2 , whose main chains were partially dehydrogenated to carbon–carbon double bonds (C?C). The C?Cs in 2 can be brominated by treatment with Br2. The polymerization mechanism was presumed to include the formation of Grignard reagents of various species with benzylic C? Br bonds and the nucleophilic attacks of the Grignard reagents to various compounds with benzylic C? Br bonds. Copolymerization of 1 with dichlorodimethylsilane successfully proceeded. Mg/Cu‐mediated copolycondensation of 1 with 1,6‐dibromohexane proceeded to give polymers that have similar compositions to those of random copolymers of ethylene and styrene. © 2006Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined star polymers were synthesized with a combination of the core‐first method and atom transfer radical polymerization. The control of the architecture of the macroinitiator based on β‐cyclodextrin bearing functional bromide groups was determined by 13C NMR, fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, and elemental analysis. In a second step, the polymerization of the tert‐butyl acrylate monomer was optimized to avoid a star–star coupling reaction and allowed the synthesis of a well‐defined organosoluble polymer star. The determination of the macromolecular dimensions of these new star polymers by size exclusion chromatography/light scattering was in agreement with the structure of armed star polymers in a large range of predicted molecular weights. This article describes a new approach to polyelectrolyte star polymers by postmodification of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) by acrylic arm hydrolysis in a water‐soluble system. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
