The objectives of this paper are to study the crystallization behavior and fracture characteristics of spherical alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticle‐filled polypropylene (PP) composites. Nanocomposites containing 1.5–5.0 wt % of the Al2O3 nanoparticles (pretreated with silane coupling agent) were prepared for this investigation. Wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) results show that a small amount of β‐crystal of PP forms after adding the Al2O3 nanoparticles. According to differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and optical microscopy (OM) measurements, the Al2O3 nanoparticles make PP spherulite size reduced and crystallization temperature of PP enhanced, by acting as effective nucleating agents. However, there are no obvious differences in the crystallinity for the virgin PP and the Al2O3/PP nanocomposites. Tensile test shows that both the Young's modulus and the yield strength of the Al2O3/PP nanocomposites increase with the particle content increasing, suggesting that the interfacial interaction between the nanoparticles and PP matrix is relatively strong. Under quasi‐static loading rate, the fracture toughness (KIC) of the Al2O3/PP nanocomposites was found to be insensitive to nanoparticle content. Under impact loading rate, the Izod impact strength and the impact fracture toughness (Gc) indicate that the impact fracture toughness increases initially with the addition of 1.5 wt % of the Al2O3 nanofillers into the PP matrix. However, with the further addition of up to 3.0 and 5.0 wt % nanoparticles, both the Izod impact strength and impact Gc change very little. By observing the single‐edge‐double‐notch (SEDN) specimens with optical microscopy after four point bending (4PB) tests, it was found that numerous crazes and microcracks form around the subcritical crack tip, indicating that crazing and microcracking are the dominant fracture mechanisms. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation confirms this result. In addition, when the strain rate of 4PB tests was increased, some wave‐like branches were formed along the fractured edge for the Al2O3/PP nanocomposites. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel epoxy nanocomposites based on a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy, an epoxy functionalized hyperbranched polymer (HTTE) and nano‐Al2O3 were synthesized with the aim of determining the effect of the nano‐Al2O3 particles and HTTE on the structure and properties of epoxy nanocomposites. The mechanical properties, thermal conductivity, bulk resistivity, and thermal stability of the nano‐Al2O3/HTTE/DGEBA ternary composites were evaluated and compared with the corresponding matrix. The improvement in impact properties of these nanocomposites was explained in terms of fracture surface analysis by SEM. The results indicate that the incorporation of nanoparticles and hyperbranched epoxy effectively improved the toughness of epoxy composites without sacrificing thermal conductivity and bulk resistivity compared to the neat epoxy and Al2O3/DGEBA, obtaining a well dispersion of nanoparticles in epoxy matrix and solving the drawbacks for single fillers filled epoxy nanocomposite. Hydroxyl‐terminated poly(ether ether ketone) with pendent tert‐butyl groups (PEEKTOH) was synthesized by the nucleophilic substitution reaction of 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone with tert‐butyl hydroquinone with potassium carbonate as a catalyst and N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone as a solvent. Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A epoxy resin was toughened with PEEKTOHs having different molecular weights. The melt‐mixed binary blends were homogeneous and showed a single composition‐dependent glass‐transition temperature (Tg). Kelley–Bueche and Gordon–Taylor equations gave good correlation with the experimental Tg. Scanning electron microscopy studies of the cured blends revealed a two‐phase morphology. A sea‐island morphology in which the thermoplastic was dispersed in a continuous matrix of epoxy resin was observed. Phase separation occurred by a nucleation and growth mechanism. The dynamic mechanical spectrum of the blends gave two peaks corresponding to epoxy‐rich and thermoplastic‐rich phases. The Tg of the epoxy‐rich phase was lower than that of the unmodified epoxy resin, indicating the presence of dissolved PEEKTOH in the epoxy matrix. There was an increase in the tensile strength with the addition of PEEKTOH. The fracture toughness increased by 135% with the addition of high‐molecular‐weight PEEKTOH. The improvement in the fracture toughness was dependent on the molecular weight and concentration of the oligomers present in the blend. Fracture mechanisms such as crack path deflection, ductile tearing of the thermoplastic, and local plastic deformation of the matrix occurred in the blends. The thermal stability of the blends was not affected by blending with PEEKTOH. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 44: 541–556, 2006  相似文献

An amine‐terminated hyperbranched polyimide (HBPI) was prepared by the condensation polymerization of a commercially available triamine monomer with a dianhydride monomer. The effects of the HBPI content on the thermal and mechanical interfacial properties of diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy resins were investigated with several techniques. The thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the thermal stability of the DGEBA/HBPI blends did not obviously change as the HBPI content increased. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of the DGEBA/HBPI blends increased with the addition of HBPI. Improvements in the critical stress intensity factor (KIC) and impact strength of the blends were observed with the addition of HBPI. The KIC value and impact strength were 2.5 and 2 times the values of the neat epoxy resins with only 4 wt % HBPI. The fractured surfaces were studied with scanning electron microscopy to investigate the morphology of the blends, and they showed that shear deformation occurred to prevent the propagation of cracks in the DGEBA/HBPI blends. These results indicated that a toughness improvement was achieved without a decrease in the thermal stability or Tg. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. To investigate the effect of catalysts on the thermal, rheological, and mechanical properties of an epoxy system, a resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol‐A (DGEBA) was cured by two cationic latent thermal catalysts, N‐benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) and N‐benzylquinoxalinium hexafluoroantimonate (BQH). Differential scanning calorimetry was used for the thermal characterization of the epoxy systems. Near‐infrared spectroscopy was employed to examine the cure reaction between the DGEBA and the latent thermal catalysts used. The rheological properties of the blend systems were investigated under an isothermal condition with a rheometer. To characterize the mechanical properties of the systems, flexure, fracture toughness (KIC), and impact tests were performed. The phase morphology was studied with scanning electron microscopy of the fractured surfaces of mechanical test samples. The conversion and cure activation energy of the DGEBA/BQH system were higher than those of the DGEBA/BPH system. The crosslinking activation energy showed a result similar to that obtained from the cure kinetics of the blend systems. The flexure strength, KIC, and impact properties of the DGEBA/BQH system were also superior to those of the DGEBA/BPH system. This was a result of the substituted benzene group of the BQH catalyst, which increased the crosslink density and structural stability of the epoxy system studied. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Intercalated nanocomposites of modified montmorillonite clays in a glassy epoxy were prepared by crosslinking with commercially available aliphatic diamine curing agents. These materials are shown to have improved Young's modulus but corresponding reductions in ultimate strength and strain to failure. The results were consistent with most particulate‐filled systems. The macroscopic compressive behavior was unchanged, although the failure mechanisms in compression varied from the unmodified samples. The fracture toughness of these materials was investigated and improvements in toughness values of 100% over unmodified resin were demonstrated. The fracture‐surface topology was examined using scanning electron and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopies and shown to be related to the clay morphology of the system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel renewable resource based tri-functional epoxy resin from itaconic acid (TEIA) was blended with petroleum based epoxy resin (DGEBA) and fabricated at different ratios. Then, it was by thermally cured with methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) in presence of 2-methylimidazole (2-MI) catalyst. The tensile, modulus, strength of virgin epoxy resin (41.97 MPa, 2222 MPa) increased to 47.59 MPa, 2515 MPa, respectively, with the addition of 30% of TEIA. The fracture toughness parameter, critical stress intensity factor (KIC) revealed enhancement of toughness in the TEIA bio-based blends system. The thermomechanical properties of TEIA (tri-functional epoxy resin from itaconic acid) modified petroleum-epoxy networks were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). The fracture morphology was also studied by the scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy respectively.  相似文献

A mixture of epoxy with liquid nitrile rubber, carboxyl‐terminated (butadiene‐co‐acrylonitrile) (CTBN) was cured under various temperatures. The cured resin was a two‐phase system, where spherical rubber domains were dispersed in the matrix of epoxy. The morphology development during cure was investigated by scanning electron microscope (SEM). There was slight reduction in the glass transition temperature of the epoxy matrix (Tg) on the addition of CTBN. It was observed that, for a particular CTBN content, Tg was found to be unaffected by the cure temperature. Bimodal distribution of particles was noted by SEM analysis. The increase in the size of rubber domains with CTBN content is due probably to the coalescence of the rubber particles. The mechanical properties of the cured resin were thoroughly investigated. Although there was a slight reduction in tensile strength and young's modulus, appreciable improvements in impact strength, fracture energy, and fracture toughness were observed. Addition of nitrile rubber above 20 parts per hundred parts of resin (phr) made the epoxy network more flexible. The volume fraction of dispersed rubbery phase and interfacial area were increased with the addition of more CTBN. A two‐phase morphology was further established by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 42: 2531–2544, 2004  相似文献

The effect of Al2O3 content on microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness and electrical conductivity behaviours of c-ZrO2 ceramics was investigated using high-purity commercial powder of 8 mol% yttria-stabilised c-ZrO2 doped with up to 10 wt.% Al2O3. XRD results showed that the c-ZrO2 specimens doped up to 0.3 wt.% Al2O3 revealed no Al2O3 peaks, indicating that Al2O3 was completely solubilised in the c-ZrO2 matrix. However, when >0.3 wt.% Al2O3 was added, Al2O3 peaks started to appear, showing that overdoped Al2O3 was not solubilised in the c-ZrO2 matrix. The introduction of Al2O3 significantly enhanced the hardness and fracture toughness of c-ZrO2. The hardness and fracture toughness increased with increasing Al2O3 content. The maximum hardness and fracture toughness values reached 1,459?±?8 kg/mm2 and 2.41?±?0.02 MPa/m1/2, respectively, with the addition of 10 wt.% Al2O3, while these values were 1,314?±?11 kg/mm2 and 1.5 ?±?0.03 MPa/m1/2 for undoped c-ZrO2. The increase of hardness and fracture toughness can be attributed to smaller grain size, the increment of Young’s modulus of Al2O3-doped c-ZrO2 and different expansion coefficients of c-ZrO2 and Al2O3 grains. The electrical conductivity of the specimens was measured using a frequency response analyzer in the frequency range of 5–13 MHz and in the temperature range of 300–800 °C. It was seen that electrical conductivity slightly increased with increasing Al2O3 content up to 1 wt.%, and further increase in Al2O3 led to a decreased in the conductivity.  相似文献

This study describes the preparation of a nanocomposites fabricated from monodispersed 4‐nm iron oxide (Fe3O4) coated on the surface of carboxylic acid containing multi‐walled carbon nanotube (c‐MWCNT) and polypyrrole (PPy) by in situ chemical oxidative polymerization. High‐resolution transmission electron microscopy images and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) data indicate that the resulting Fe3O4 nanoparticles synthesized using the thermal decomposition are close to spherical dots with a particle size about 4 ± 0.2 nm. The resulting nanoparticles were further mixed with c‐MWCNT in an aqueous solution containing with anionic surfactant sodium bis(2‐ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate to form one‐dimensional Fe3O4 coated c‐MWCNT template for further preparation of nanocomposite. Structural and morphological analysis using field‐emission scanning electron microscopy, high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, and XRD showed that the fabricated Fe3O4 coated c‐MWCNT/PPy nanocomposites are one‐dimensional core (Fe3O4 coated c‐MWCNT)‐shell (PPy) structures. The conductivities of these Fe3O4 coated c‐MWCNT/PPy nanocomposites are about four times higher than those of pure PPy matrix. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Al2O3/SnO2 co-nanoparticles were prepared with a modified sol-gel technique followed by a thermal treatment process. With these co-nanoparticles the grafted collagen-Al2O3/SnO2 nanocomposites were obtained using a supersonic dispersion method. X-ray diffraction, FT-IR analysis, transmission electron microscopy, TGA/DTA and infrared emissivity test were performed to characterize the resulting nanoparticles and nanocomposites, respectively. The Al2O3/SnO2 co-nanoparticles showed a narrow distribution of size between 20-40 nm and could be uniformly absorbed on the tri-helix scaffolds of the grafted collagen without any aggregation. The nanocomposites possessed better thermal stability and substantially lower infrared emissivity than the grafted collagen and Al2O3/SnO2 co-nanoparticles with an increase of degradation temperature from 39 to 210 ℃ and a decrease of infrared emissivity from 0.850 of the grafted collagen and 0.708 of the Al2O3/SnO2 co-nanoparticles to 0.424, which provided a potential application of the nanocomposites to areas such as photoelectronics.  相似文献

In this article, Multi‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes (MWCNTs) of varying diameters, both untreated and polycarboxylated, were dispersed at constant weight percentage in an epoxy matrix, and resulting fracture toughnesses (KIc) were measured in each case. We show that changing the MWCNT diameter has two effects on the composite fracture toughness: (i) a small MWCNT diameter enables larger interfacial surface for adhesion maximization, which increases toughness; (ii) at the same time, it limits the available pull‐out energy and reduces the MWCNT ability to homogeneously disperse in the matrix due to this same large active surface: this decreases toughness. Most commercially available MWCNTs have a length range of several μm, thus an optimal diameter exists which depends on MWCNT wall thickness and surface treatment. Such optimal diameter maximizes pull‐out energy and thus composite fracture toughness. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys, 2012  相似文献

The fracture toughness of isotropic and flow‐oriented linear low‐density polyethylene (LLDPE) is evaluated by the Essential Work of Fracture (EWF) concept, with a special setup of CCD camera to monitor the process of deformation. Allowing for the molecular orientation, flow‐oriented sample, prepared via melt extrusion drawing, is stretched parallel (oriented‐0°) and perpendicular (oriented‐90°) to its original melt extrusion drawing direction, respectively. The obtained values of specific EFW we are 34.6, 10.2, and 4.2 N/mm for the oriented‐0°, isotropic and oriented‐90° sample, respectively. With knowledge of intrinsic deformation parameters deduced from uniaxial tensile tests, moreover, a relationship between specific EFW we the ratio of true yield stress to strain hardening modulus σty/G is well established. It means that the fracture toughness of polyethylene is determined by both crystalline and amorphous parts, rather than by one of them. Moreover, the true yield stress seems to be nondecisive factors determining the fracture toughness of polyethylene. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel core‐shell‐structured carboxylated‐styrene butadiene rubber (XSBR)‐functionalized nanodiamond (ND‐XSBR) was synthesized and characterized. Epoxy (EP) nanocomposites toughened by pristine ND and ND‐XSBR were investigated and compared. The ND‐XSBR‐reinforced nanocomposite exhibited mechanical properties superior to those of the one filled by pristine ND. At a low‐filler loading, the ND‐XSBR exhibited an impressive toughening effect. The maximum flexural strength was shown when the filler loading was as low as 0.1 wt % for the EP/ND‐XSBR nanocomposite. Furthermore, enhanced fracture toughness and fracture energy were shown by surface functionalization, representing enhanced compatibility between the ND‐XSBR and EP matrix. The glass transition temperature (Tg) and storage modulus of the nanocomposites were studied, and the EP/ND‐XSBR0.1 nanocomposite exhibited the highest Tg owing to the stronger interfacial interaction. The EP/ND‐XSBR0.2 exhibited higher storage modulus and Tg than the EP/ND0.2, because the higher interfacial interaction can restrict the molecular mobility of the EP by the functionalized ND‐XSBR. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Divinylsiloxane‐bisbenzocyclobutene (DVS‐bisBCB) polymer has very low dielectric constant and dissipation factor, good thermal stability, and high chemical resistance. The fracture toughness of the thermoset polymer is moderate due to its high crosslink density. A thermoplastic elastomer, polystyrene–polybutadiene–polystyrene triblock copolymer, was incorporated into the matrix to enhance its toughness. The cured thermoset matrix showed different morphology when the elastomer was added to the B‐staged prepolymer or when the elastomer was B‐staged with the DVS‐bisBCB monomer. Small and uniformly distributed elastomer domains were detected by transmission electron micrographs (TEM) in the former case, but TEM did not detect a separate domain in the latter case. A high percentage of the polystyrene–polybutadiene–polystyrene triblock copolymer could be incorporated into the DVS‐bisBCB thermoset matrix by B‐staging the triblock copolymer with the BCB monomer. The elastomer increased the fracture toughness of DVS‐bisBCB polymer as indicated by enhanced elongation at break and increased K1c values obtained by the modified edge‐lift‐off test. Elastomer modified DVS‐bisBCB maintained excellent electrical properties, high Tg and good thermal stability, but showed higher coefficient of linear thermal expansion values. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work deals with the toughening effect of flaky WS2 and fullerene‐like WS2 (IF‐WS2) nanoparticles on epoxy with varying network properties. Reducing the amount of curing agent resulted in decreased crosslink density as measured by dynamic‐mechanic analysis and double‐quantum nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Although that lead to moderate changes in the epoxy's tensile properties, its fracture toughness dropped drastically, probably due to an increased defect fraction. IF‐WS2 could be dispersed significantly more effectively within epoxy resin than flaky WS2, possibly due to its spherical shape, but caused less toughening. IF‐WS2 tended to debond from the epoxy, while flaky WS2 introduced more secondary cracks. Both increased the fracture toughness of the (brittle) substoichiometric, but not that of the (tough) stoichiometric epoxy, possibly due to their interaction with molecular defects. Irrespective of which mechanism resulted in the toughening effect, its effectiveness depended strongly on the epoxy matrix. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Polyaniline–Nd2O3:Al2O3 nanocomposites were prepared by in situ oxidative polymerization method using different weight percentages of oxide powders. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction for molecular and crystal structures. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy images show the tubular structure of polyaniline nanocomposite with embedded metal oxides. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites increases with increase in temperature as well as with concentration of Nd2O3:Al2O3 particles in polyaniline. This is because of the hopping of charge polarons and extended chain length of the nanocomposites as evidenced by the negative thermal coefficient (NTC) characteristic. A high NTC value of 2.67 was found in nanocomposites with 15 wt% of oxide particles. These nanocomposites show low dielectric constant and dielectric loss; the electrical conductivity is higher than 0.3 S/cm as confirmed by Cole–Cole plot that indicates a decrease in both grain resistance and bulk resistance of the nanocomposites. The current–voltage and capacitance–voltage measurements were also carried out. The carrier mobility μ values of pure polyaniline and nanocomposites were found to be 4.27 × 10?3 and 1.45 × 10–2 H.M?1, respectively. A significant enhancement in carrier mobility was observed in comparison with the literature. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Exfoliated nylon‐11/layered silicate nanocomposites were prepared via in situ polymerization by dispersing organoclay in 11‐aminoundecanoic acid monomer. The original clay was modified by a novel method with 11‐aminoundecanoic acid. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results show that stronger hydrogen bonds exist between nylon‐11 and organoclay than that of between nylon‐11 and original clay. The linear dynamic viscoelasticity of organoclay nanocomposites was investigated. Before taking rheological measurements, the exfoliated and intercalating structures and the thermal properties were characterized using X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that the clay was uniformly distributed in nylon‐11 matrix during in situ polymerization of clay with 4 wt % or less. The presence of clay in nylon‐11 matrix increased the crystallization temperature and the thermal stability of nanocomposites prepared. Rheological properties such as storage modulus, loss modulus, and relative viscosity have close relationship with the dispersion favorably compatible with the organically modified clay. Comparing with neat nylon‐11, the nanocomposites show much higher dynamic modulus and stronger shear thinning behavior. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The crystal growth and morphology in 150‐nm‐thick PET nanocomposite thin films with alumina (Al2O3) nanoparticle fillers (38 nm size) were investigated for nanoparticle loadings from 0 to 5 wt %. Transmission electron microscopy of the films showed that at 1 wt % Al2O3, the nanoparticles were well dispersed in the film and the average size was close to the reported 38 nm. Above 2 wt % Al2O3, the nanoparticles started to agglomerate. The crystal growth and morphological evolution in the PET nanocomposite films kept at an isothermal temperature of 217 °C were monitored as a function of the holding time using in situ atomic force microscopy. It was found that the crystal nucleation and growth of PET was strongly dependent on the dispersed particles in the films. At 1 wt % Al2O3, the overall crystal growth rate of PET lamellae was slower than that of the PET homopolymer films. Above 2 wt % Al2O3, the crystal growth rate increased with nanoparticle loading because of heterogeneous nucleation. In addition, in these PET nanocomposite thin films, the Al2O3 nanoparticles induced preferentially oriented edge‐on lamellae with respect to the surface, which was not the case in unfilled PET as determined by grazing‐incidence X‐ray diffraction. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. SiO2‐coated Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2) nanocomposites were prepared by sol–gel method, and the anticorrosion performance of composite coatings was discussed. The structure of the Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposites was verified through Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. Composite epoxy coatings with same concentrations of Fe3O4 and Fe3O4@SiO2 were measured by scanning electron microscopy contact angle meter. More importantly, the Fe3O4@SiO2 nanocomposites not only obtained a homogeneous dispersion and compatibility in epoxy resin but also exhibited an obvious superiority in enhancing the anticorrosion performance of epoxy coatings. Furthermore, the anticorrosion mechanism of Fe3O4@SiO2/epoxy composite coating was tentatively discussed. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献
