The thermal behavior of poly(ethylene‐co‐2,2‐bis[4‐(ethylenoxy)‐1,4‐phenylene]propane terephthalate) (PET/BHEEBT) copolymers was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. A good thermal stability was found for all the samples. The thermal analysis carried out using DSC technique showed that the Tm of the copolymers decreased with increasing BHEEBT unit content, differently from Tg, which on the contrary increased. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction measurements permitted identifying the kind of crystalline structure of PET in all the semicrystalline samples. The multiple endotherms similar to PET were also evidenced in the PET/BHEEBT samples, due to melting and recrystallization processes. By applying the Hoffman–Weeks' method, the Tm° of PET and its copolymers was derived. The isothermal crystallization kinetics was analyzed according to Avrami's treatment and values of the exponent n close to 3 were obtained, independently of Tc and composition. Moreover, the introduction of BHEEBT units was found to decrease PET crystallization rate. Lastly, the presence of a crystal‐amorphous interphase was evidenced. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(propylene/neopenthyl terephthalate) random copolymers (PPT‐PNT) and poly(neopenthyl terephthalate) (PNT) were synthesized and subjected to molecular characterization. Afterwards, the polyesters were examined by TGA, DSC, andX‐ray. The copolymers, which displayed a good thermal stability, at room temperature appeared as semicrystalline materials: the main effect of copolymerization was a lowering in the amount of crystallinity and a decrease of the melting temperature with respect to homopolymer PPT. XRD measurements allowed the identification of the PPT crystalline structure in all cases. Amorphous samples were obtained after melt quenching, with the exception of PPT‐PNT5, and an increment of Tg as the content of NT units is increased was observed due to the effect of the side methylene groups in the polymeric chain. The Wood equation described well Tg‐composition data. Lastly, the presence of a rigid‐amorphous phase was evidenced in the copolymers, whose amount depended on composition and on thermal treatment. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copoly(ethylene terephthalate‐imide)s (PETIs) were synthesized by the melt copolycondensation of bis(2‐hydroxyethyl)terephthalate with a new imide monomer, N,N′‐bis[p‐(2‐hydroxyethoxycarbonyl)phenyl]‐biphenyl‐3,3′,4,4′‐tetracarboxydiimide (BHEI). The copolymers were characterized by intrinsic viscosity, Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis techniques. Although their crystallinities decreased as the content of BHEI units increased, the glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) increased significantly. When 5 or 10 mol % BHEI units were incorporated into poly(ethylene terephthalate), Tg increased by 10 or 24 °C, respectively. The thermal stabilities of PETI copolymers were about the same as the thermal stability of PET, whereas the weight loss of PETIs decreased as the content of BHEI units increased. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The free‐radical copolymerization of N‐phenylmaleimide (N‐PhMI) with acrylic acid was studied in the range of 25–75 mol % in the feed. The interactions of these copolymers with Cu(II) and Co(II) ions were investigated as a function of the pH and copolymer composition by the use of the ultrafiltration technique. The maximum retention capacity of the copolymers for Co(II) and Cu(II) ions varied from 200 to 250 mg/g and from 210 to 300 mg/g, respectively. The copolymers and polymer–metal complexes of divalent transition‐metal ions were characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. The thermal behavior was investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG). The TG and DSC measurements showed an increase in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) and the thermal stability with an increase in the N‐PhMI concentration in the copolymers. Tg of poly(N‐PhMI‐co‐AA) with copolymer composition 46.5:53.5 mol % was found at 251 °C, and it decreased when the complexes of Co(II) and Cu(II) at pHs 3–7 were formed. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(1,1‐bis(ethoxycarbonyl)‐2‐vinyl cyclopropane (ECVP)‐graft‐dimethyl siloxane) copolymers were prepared using a macromonomer approach. Poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) macromonomers were prepared by living anionic polymerization of cyclosiloxanes followed by sequential chain‐end capping with allyl chloroformate. These macromonomers were then copolymerized with ECVP. MALDI‐ToF mass spectrometry and 1H NMR spectroscopy were used to show that the macromonomers had approximately 80% of the end groups functionalized with allyl carbonate groups. Gradient polymer elution chromatography showed that high yields of the graft copolymers were obtained, along with only small fractions of the PECVP and PDMS homopolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of the PDMS component could be maintained in the graft copolymers. However, the Tg was a function of polymer composition and the polymers produced had Tgs that ranged from ?50 to ?120 °C. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2013  相似文献

Novel, biodegradable poly(?‐caprolactone)‐block‐poly(trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐proline)‐block‐poly(?‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization from dihydroxyl‐terminated macroinitiator poly(trans‐4‐hydroxy‐N‐benzyloxycarbonyl‐L ‐proline) (PHpr) and ?‐caprolactone (?‐CL) with stannous octoate as the catalyst. The molecular weights were characterized with gel permeation chromatography and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. With an increase in the contents of ?‐CL incorporated into the copolymers, a decrease in the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) was observed. The Tg values of copoly(4‐phenyl‐?‐caprolactone) and copoly(4‐methyl‐?‐caprolactone) were higher than Tg of copoly(?‐caprolactone). Their micellar characteristics in an aqueous phase were investigated with fluorescence spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. The block copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations in the range of 1.00–1.36 mg L?1. With higher molecular weights and hydrophobic components in the copolymers, a higher critical micelle concentration was observed. As the feed weight ratio of antitriptyline hydrochloride (AM) to the polymer increased, the drug loading increased. The micelles exhibited a spherical shape, and the average size was less than 250 nm. The in vitro hydrolytic degradation and controlled drug release properties of the triblock copolymers were also investigated. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(propylene isophthalate) (PPI), poly(propylene succinate) (PPS), and poly(propylene isophthalate/succinate) (PPI‐PPS) random copolymers were synthesized and characterized in terms of chemical structure and molecular weight. The thermal behavior was examined by TGA and DSC. All the polymers showed a good thermal stability. At room temperature, they appeared as semicrystalline materials, except 20PPI‐PPS and 30PPI‐PPS: the main effect of copolymerization was a lowering in the amount of crystallinity and a decrease of Tm with respect to homopolymers. A crystalline phase of PPI and PPS was evidenced at high content of PI or PS units, respectively. Amorphous samples were obtained after melt quenching and an increment of Tg, with the increment of PI units, was observed. This behavior was explained as due to the presence of stiff phenylene groups. The Wood equation described well Tg‐composition data. Lastly, the presence of a rigid‐amorphous phase was evidenced in copolymers, differently from the two homopolymers. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glass transition temperatures (Tgs) of P(AMA‐co‐BA) copolymers and the corresponding homopolymers, where AMA is allyl methacrylate and BA is n‐butyl acrylate, obtained by means of atom transfer radical polymerization were measured using differential scanning calorimetry. Because of the (pseudoliving) nature of this polymerization technique an increase in molecular weight (MW) is produced as the reaction progresses, which gives rise to an increase in Tgs. This increment can be adequately described by the Fox–Flory's equation in both homopolymers. However, in the spontaneous gradient copolymers of P(AMA‐co‐BA), the expected increase in Tg with the augment of the monomer conversion is compensated by the enrichment of BA as the polymerization reaction progresses. These opposite effects with respect to the Tg values almost balance each other, and therefore no significant influence on the MW or on conversion is found. This fact establishes that Tgs can be used to describe the profile of these gradient copolymers, and can be theoretically determined because of its dependence on the molar fraction in the copolymer. From this dependence on chemical composition along with the experimental behavior, a prediction of the Tg variation with the MW was performed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Four well‐defined diblock copolymers and one statistical copolymer based on lauryl methacrylate (LauMA) and 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AEMA) were prepared using reversible addition‐fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The polymers were characterized in terms of molecular weights, polydispersity indices (ranging between 1.12 and 1.23) and compositions by size exclusion chromatography and 1H NMR spectroscopy, respectively. The preparation of the block copolymers was accomplished following a two‐step methodology: First, well‐defined LauMA homopolymers were prepared by RAFT using cumyl dithiobenzoate as the chain transfer agent (CTA). Kinetic studies revealed that the polymerization of LauMA followed first‐order kinetics demonstrating the “livingness” of the RAFT process. The pLauMAs were subsequently used as macro‐CTA for the polymerization of AEMA. The glass transition (Tg) and decomposition temperatures (ranging between 200 and 300 °C) of the copolymers were determined using differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. The Tgs of the LauMA homopolymers were found to be around ?53 °C. Block copolymers exhibited two Tgs suggesting microphase separation in the bulk whereas the statistical copolymer presented a single Tg as expected. Furthermore, the micellization behavior of pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers was investigated in n‐hexane, a selective solvent for the LauMA block, using dynamic light scattering. pLauMA‐b‐pAEMA block copolymers formed spherical micelles in dilute hexane solutions with hydrodynamic diameters ranging between 30 and 50 nm. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility of poly(hydroxyether terephthalate ester) (PHETE) with poly(4‐vinyl pyridine) (P4VP) was established on the basis of thermal analysis. Differential scanning calorimetry showed that each blend displayed a single glass‐transition temperature (Tg), which is intermediate between those of the pure polymers and varies with the composition of blend. The Tg‐composition relationship can be well described with Kwei equation with k = 1 and q = ?30.8 (K), suggesting the presence of the intermolecular specific interactions in the blend system. To investigate the intermolecular specific interactions in the blends, the model compounds such as 1,3‐diphenoxy‐2‐propanol, 4‐methyl pyridine, and ethyl benzoate were used to determine the equilibrium constants, according to Coleman and Painter model, to account for the association equilibriums of several structural moieties, using liquid Fourier transform infrared difference spectroscopy. In terms of the difference in the association equilibrium constant, it is proposed that there are the competitive specific interactions in the blends, which were confirmed by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the blends. It is observed that upon adding P4VP to the system, the ester carbonyls of PHETE that were H‐bonded with the hydroxyl groups were released because of the formation of the stronger interchain association via the hydrogen bonding between the hydroxyls of PHETE and tertiary nitrogen atoms of P4VP. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recent studies have demonstrated that gradient copolymers exhibit unique thermal properties. Although these properties can be determined by copolymer composition, other factors such as chain and sequence lengths and their distributions can also influence them. Accordingly, the synthesis of gradient copolymers requires simultaneously tailor‐made chain structure and thermal properties. In this work, we carried out a systematic study on the preparation of poly(methyl methacrylate‐grad‐2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate) [poly(MMA‐grad‐HEMA)] with synchronously tailor‐made chain composition distribution and glass transition temperature (Tg) through semibatch atom transfer radical polymerization. First, a comprehensive model for simultaneously predicting gradient copolymer microstructure and Tg was presented using the concept of pseudo‐kinetic rate coefficients and Johnston equation. The model was validated by comparing simulation results with the classical reference data. Furthermore, the model was used to guide the experimental synthesis of the poly(MMA‐grad‐HEMA) gradient copolymers potentially as excellent damping material. The thermal properties of these gradient copolymer samples were evaluated. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

An Erratum has been published for this article in J. Polym. Sci. Part A: Polym. Chem. (2004) 42(22) 5845 New multiblock copolymers derived from poly(L‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) were prepared with the coupling reaction between PLLA and PCL oligomers with ? NCO terminals. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), 13C NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to characterize the copolymers and the results showed that PLLA and PCL were coupled by the reaction between ? NCO groups at the end of the PCL and ? OH (or ? COOH) groups at the end of the PLLA. DSC data indicated that the different compositions of PLLA and PCL had an influence on the thermal and crystallization properties including the glass‐transition temperature (Tg), melting temperature (TM), crystallizing temperature (Tc), melting enthalpy (ΔHm), crystallizing enthalpy (ΔHc), and crystallinity. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) was employed to study the effect of the composition of PLLA and PCL and reaction time on the molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution of the copolymers. The weight‐average molecular weight of PLLA–PCL multiblock copolymers was up to 180,000 at a composition of 60% PLLA and 40% PCL, whereas that of the homopolymer of PLLA was only 14,000. A polarized optical microscope was used to observe the crystalline morphology of copolymers; the results showed that all polymers exhibited a spherulitic morphology. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Graft copolymers of poly(tulipalin A) (PT) and poly(DL‐lactide) (PDLLA) (PT‐g‐PDLLA) having various graft lengths and ratios were synthesized by free‐radical copolymerization of α‐methylene‐γ‐butyrolactone (MBL) and PDLLA macromonomers (HEMA‐PDLLA) terminated by 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA)‐terminated. HEMA‐PDLLA were synthesized by ring opening polymerization (ROP) of DL‐lactide in the presence of HEMA. Both HEMA‐PDLLA and the copolymers were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties of the graft copolymers were found to depend on the graft length and the ratio. The copolymers consisting of PDLLA side chains of Mn = 500 Da showed a single Tg between Tgs of the two component polymers, suggesting a miscible state of PT and PDLLA. In contrast, the copolymers consisting of PDLLA side chains of Mn = 1100, 2000, and 7000 Da showed two isolated Tg, suggesting two segregated domains. The AFM phase images of the copolymers supported the single and phase‐separated morphologies for the former and latter systems, respectively. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Statistical copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 2‐methacryloyloxyethyl ferrocenecarboxylate (MAEFC) were prepared by free radical polymerization. The reactivity ratios were estimated using the Fineman‐Ross, inverted Fineman‐Ross, Kelen‐Tüdos, and extended Kelen‐Tüdos graphical methods. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained by calculating the dyad monomer sequence fractions and the mean sequence length. The glass‐transition temperature (Tg) values of the copolymers were measured and examined by means of several theoretical equations, allowing the prediction of these Tg values. The thermal degradation behavior of the copolymers was also studied and compared with the respective homopolymers. Cyclic voltammetry was employed to study the electrochemical properties of the copolymers. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A functionalized cyclic carbonate monomer containing a cinnamate moiety, 5‐methyl‐5‐cinnamoyloxymethyl‐1,3‐dioxan‐2‐one (MC), was prepared for the first time with 1,1,1‐tri(hydroxymethyl) ethane as a starting material. Subsequent polymerization of the new cyclic carbonate and its copolymerization with L ‐lactide (LA) were successfully performed with diethyl zinc (ZnEt2) as initiator/catalyst. NMR was used for microstructure identification of the obtained monomer and copolymers. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to characterize the functionalized poly(ester‐carbonate). The results indicated that the copolymers displayed a single glass transition temperature (Tg) and the Tg decreased with increasing carbonate content and followed the Fox equation, indicative of a random microstructure of the copolymer. The photo‐crosslinking of the cinnamate‐carrying copolymer was also demonstrated. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 47: 161–169, 2009  相似文献

A series of poly(butylene terephthalate) copolyesters containing 5‐tert‐butyl isophthalate units up to 50 mol %, as well as the homopolyester entirely made of these units, were prepared by polycondensation from a melt. The microstructure of the copolymers was determined by NMR to be random for the whole range of compositions. The effect exerted by the 5‐tert‐butyl isophthalate units on thermal, tensile, and gas transport properties was evaluated. Both the melting temperature (Tm) and crystallinity were found to decrease steadily with copolymerization, whereas the glass‐transition temperature (Tg) increased and the polyesters became more brittle. Permeability and solubility slightly increased with the content in substituted isophthalic units, whereas the diffusion coefficient remained practically constant. For the homopolyester poly(5‐tert‐butyl isophthalate), all these properties were found to deviate significantly from the general trend displayed by copolyesters, suggesting that a different structure in the solid state is likely adopted in this case. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(2‐propyl‐oxazoline)s can be prepared by living cationic ring‐opening polymerization of 2‐oxazolines and represent an emerging class of biocompatible polymers exhibiting a lower critical solution temperature in aqueous solution close to body temperature. However, their usability is limited by the irreversibility of the transition due to isothermal crystallization in case of poly(2‐isopropyl‐2‐oxazoline) and the rather low glass transition temperatures (Tg < 45 °C) of poly(2‐n‐propyl‐2‐oxazoline)‐based polymers. The copolymerization of 2‐cyclopropyl‐2‐oxazoline and 2‐ethyl‐2‐oxazoline presented herein yields gradient copolymers whose cloud point temperatures can be accurately tuned over a broad temperature range by simple variation of the composition. Surprisingly, all copolymers reveal lower Tgs than the corresponding homopolymers ascribed to suppression of interchain interactions. However, it is noteworthy that the copolymers still have Tgs > 45 °C, enabling convenient storage in the fridge for future biomedical formulations. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. We have determined the gas transport properties of He, H2, O2, N2, and CO2 for 6FDA‐durene homopolymer and 6FDA‐durene/pPDA copolyimides. The 6FDA‐durene exhibits the highest permeability with the lowest selectivity. Permeability of copolymers decreases with increasing 6FDA–pPDA content, while permselectivity increases with an increase in 6FDA–pPDA content. 6FDA‐durene/pPDA (50/50) and 6FDA‐durene/pPDA (20/80) materials have O2 and CO2 permeabilities greater than those calculated from the addition rule of the semilogarithmic equation. These higher deviations from the additional rule of the semilogarithmic equation are mainly attributed to the fact that these copolyimides have higher solubility coefficients than those calculated from the additive rule. The Tg s of 6FDA‐durene/pPDA copolyimides decrease with an increase in 6FDA–pPDA content. Tg s predicted from the Fox equation are lower than the experimental data, and the their difference increases with an increase in pPDA content, implying the copolyimides of 6FDA‐durene/pPDA may have greater interstitial space among chains because of the conformation difference, and thus create more fraction free volume compared with the ideal case of simple volume addition. Density measurements also suggest these two copolymers have greater free volumes and the fractions of free volume, which supporting the gas transport results. The thermal stability and β‐relaxation temperature have also been studied for these copolymers. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 38: 2703–2713, 2000  相似文献

A series of novel soluble pyridazinone‐ or pyridazine‐containing poly(arylene ether)s were prepared by a polycondensation reaction. The pyridazinone monomer, 6‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)pyridazin‐3(2H)‐one ( 1 ), was synthesized from the corresponding acetophenone and glyoxylic acid in a simple one‐pot reaction. The pyridazinone monomer was successfully copolymerized with bisphenol A (BPA) or 1,2‐dihydro‐4‐(4‐hydroxyphenyl)phthalazin‐1(2H)‐one (DHPZ) and bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone to form high‐molecular‐weight polymers. The copolymers had inherent viscosities of 0.5–0.9 dL/g. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of the copolymers synthesized with BPA increased with increasing content of the pyridazinone monomer. The Tg's of the copolymers synthesized from DHPZ with different pyridazinone contents were similar to those of the two homopolymers. The homopolymers showed Tg's from 202 to 291 °C by differential scanning calorimetry. The 5% weight loss temperatures in nitrogen measured by thermogravimetric analysis were in the range of 411–500 °C. 4‐(6‐Chloropyridazin‐3‐yl)phenol ( 2 ) was synthesized from 1 via a simple one‐pot reaction. 2 was copolymerized with 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol and bis(4‐fluorophenyl)sulfone to form high‐Tg polymers. The copolymers with less than 80 mol % pyridazinone or chloropyridazine monomers were soluble in chlorinated solvents such as chloroform. The copolymers with higher pyridazinone contents and homopolymers were not soluble in chlorinated solvents but were still soluble in dipolar aprotic solvents such as N‐methylpyrrolidinone. The soluble polymers could be cast into flexible films from solution. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 3328–3335, 2006  相似文献
