Some results of the plutonium determination for bone ash samples collected in Japan are presented. Mean239,240Pu concentration in the adult vertebra was 0.53 pCi/kg of ash during the period 1978 through 1983. The data are roughly in coincidence with estimated plutonium concentrations in the trabecular bone from reported air plutonium concentrations using the ICRP model and metabolic data, and weight of bone in Reference Japanese Man.  相似文献

The fission track technique is a sensitive detection method for particles which contain radio-nuclides like 235U or 239Pu. However, when the sample is a mixture of plutonium and uranium, discrimination between uranium particles and plutonium particles is difficult using this technique. In this study, we developed a method for detecting plutonium particles in a sample mixture of plutonium and uranium particles using alpha track and fission track techniques. The specific radioactivity (Bq/g) for alpha decay of plutonium is several orders of magnitude higher than that of uranium, indicating that the formation of the alpha track due to alpha decay of uranium can be disregarded under suitable conditions. While alpha tracks in addition to fission tracks were detected in a plutonium particle, only fission tracks were detected in a uranium particle, thereby making the alpha tracks an indicator for detecting particles containing plutonium. In addition, it was confirmed that there is a linear relationship between the numbers of alpha tracks produced by plutonium particles made of plutonium certified standard material and the ion intensities of the various plutonium isotopes measured by thermo-ionization mass spectrometry. Using this correlation, the accuracy in isotope ratios, signal intensity and measurement errors is presumable from the number of alpha tracks prior to the isotope ratio measurements by thermal ionization mass spectrometry. It is expected that this method will become an effective tool for plutonium particle analysis. The particles used in this study had sizes between 0.3 and 2.0 μm.  相似文献

This article discusses the age dating results of plutonium/uranium chronometers with a focus on the consequences for age plutonium determination when the basic assumptions of the methodology are not fully met: Incomplete removal of the daughter nuclides at the production date and uranium contamination of plutonium samples. In addition to the 238Pu/234U, 239Pu/235U and 240Pu/236U, the 242Pu/238U chronometer is discussed. The 242Pu/238U radiochronometer has only scarcely been used, due to its high sensitivity to residual uranium. However, it can be a very useful indicator for uranium contamination of aged plutonium samples.  相似文献

We have developed an analytical method for detection of239Pu in aqueous samples at concentrations as low as 10–10M. This nuclear counting technique utilizes the uranium L X-rays, which follow the alpha-decay of plutonium. Because L X-rays are specific for the element and not for the individual isotope, the isotopic composition of the plutonium sample must be known. The counting efficiency in the 11–23 keV range is determined from a plutonium standard, and the concentration of the sample is then calculated from the L X-ray count and the isotopic composition. The total L X-ray count is corrected for possible contributions from other radionuclides present as impurities by measuring the low-energy gamma-spectrum for each contaminant to establish specific photon/X-ray ratios. The ratios are important when241Pu and242Pu are measured, because the respective decay chain members produce non-U L X-rays. This new method can replace the use of labor-intensive radiochemical separation techniques and elaborate activation methods for analysis of239Pu in aqueous samples. It is also applicable for assaying plutonium in liquid wastes that pose possible hazards to the environment.  相似文献

Abstract

A method is described for extracting representative uranium and plutonium samples from highly radioactive solutions for isotopic mass spectrometric analysis. Anion resin beads in the nitrate form are used to effect separation from fission products and other actinides. Conditions required to achieve separation are proper adjustment of the uranium and nitric acid concentrations. Once uranium and plutonium are adsorbed, each bead serves as a sample for mass spectrometric analysis, with plutonium and uranium being run sequentially from the same bead. Quantitative determination of the two elements is effected through the technique of isotopic dilution.  相似文献

This work describes a streamlined approach to the separation and purification of trace uranium and plutonium in environmental swipe samples that contain a small amount of collected bulk material. We describe key modifications to conventional techniques that result in a relatively rapid, safe, cost-effective, and efficient U and Pu separation process. Simulated samples were produced by loading appropriate 235U, 238U, and 240Pu onto high purity cotton swipes. Uranium concentration and isotopic composition were measured by multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry. Corresponding plutonium measurements were conducted with a three stage thermal ionization mass spectrometer. Quantitative U and Pu recoveries were observed with this method.  相似文献

Determination of microamounts of plutonium isotopes by luminescent radiation in the infra-red region of PbMoO4 crystallophosphors activated by plutonium is proposed. The determination is possible against the background of subtantial amounts of uranium, iron, rare earths and other elements. The detection limit of plutonium is 10–9 g in the samples tested. The accuracy is 0.1 for a confidence level of 0.95.  相似文献

A simple technique for the determination of environmental levels of plutonium in a highly complex matrix (sediments containing very high amounts of iron and other metals) is reported. The sediments, collected from the Hudson River Estuary with an Emory dredge, were hand-homogenized before a sample aliquot was taken. Samples were airdried, weighed, spiked with 242Pu tracer, and heated at 400°C for 24 h. Plutonium was leached from the sediment with an acid mixture. The leachate was filtered, and plutonium coprecipitated with iron by adding ammonia solution. After dissolution, plutonium was extracted with 20% trilaurylamine in xylene, the extracts were thoroughly acid-washed to remove uranium and thorium traces, and plutonium was then back-extracted with 2 M sulfuric acid prior to electrodeposition onto a platinum planchet. The isotopic composition of plutonium was determined by α-spectrometry. Tracer yield and plutonium concentrations determined on aliquots of the same samples by this method and by an ion-exchange technique were not significantly different.  相似文献

Summary The recent discovery of the migration of plutonium in groundwater away from underground nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site has spawned considerable interest in the mechanisms by which plutonium may be released to the environment by a nuclear explosion. A suite of solid debris samples was collected during drilling through an expended test cavity and the overlying collapse chimney. Uranium and plutonium were analyzed for isotope ratios and concentrations using high precision magnetic sector inductively coupled mass spectrometry. The data unequivocally shows that plutonium may be dispersed throughout the cavity and chimney environment at the time of the detonation. The 239Pu/240Pu ratios are also fractionated relative to initial plutonium isotope ratio for the test device. Fractionation is the result of the volatilization of uranium and production of 239Pu by the reaction 238U(n,γ). We conclude that for the test under consideration plutonium was deposited outside of the confines of the cavity by dynamic processes in early-time and it is this plutonium that is most likely transferred to the groundwater regime.  相似文献

A new procedure for the radiochemical measurements of thorium, uranium and plutonium in atmospheric samples is described. Analysis involves coprecipitation of these actinides with iron hydroxide from a 40-to 50-dm3 sample of rainwater, followed by radiochemical separation and purification procedures by the use of ion exchange chromatography (Dowex AG1×8) and solvent extraction. The new procedure enables one to determine the isotopes of thorium, uranium and plutonium, which are found in rainwater at extremely low concentrations, with a chemical yield ranging from 60 to 80%.  相似文献

Our proposed spent nuclear fuel reprocessing technology named FLUOREX, which is a hybrid system using fluoride volatility and solvent extraction, meets the requirements of the future thermal/fast breeder reactors (coexistence) cycle. We have been done semi-engineering and engineering scale experiments on the fluorination of uranium, purification of UF6, pyrohydrolysis of fluorination residues, and dissolution of pyrohydrolysis samples in order to examine technical and engineering feasibilities for implementing FLUOREX. We found that uranium in spent fuels can be selectively volatilized by fluorination in the flame type reactor, and the amount of uranium volatilized is adjusted from 90% to 98% by changing the amount of F2 supplied to the reactor. The volatilized uranium is purified using UO2F2 adsorber for plutonium and purification methods such as condensation and chemical traps for fission products provide a decontamination factor of over 107. Most of the fluorination residues that consist of non-volatile fluorides of uranium, plutonium, and fission products are converted to oxides by pyrohydrolysis at 600-800 °C. Although some fluorides of fission products such as alkaline earth metals and lanthanides are not converted completely and fluorine is discharged into the solution, oxides of U and Pu obtained by pyrohydrolysis are dissolved into nitric acid solution because of the low solubility of lanthanide fluorides. These results support our opinion that FLUOREX has great possibilities for being a part of the future spent nuclear fuel cycle system.  相似文献

An On-Line Gamma Monitor profiles the concentration of uranium, plutonium, and americium in waste and product streams of the anion exchange process used to purify plutonium at Los Alamos. The Monitor employs passive gamma Spectrometry to measure the 59.5-KeV and 129-KeV gamma rays of241Am and239Pu, respectively. Because the uranium impurity in typical process streams has no gamma ray suitable for passive measurement, a novel radiotracer technique is used. Uranium-237, always present in plutonium processed at Los Alamos as a minor alpha-decay daughter of241Pu, has a 6.8-day half-life and 208-KeV gamma energy, which make it an ideal radiotracer for macro amounts of uranium in the process. The On-Line Gamma Monitor is used routinely to provide Los Alamos operators with continuous, real-time process control information.  相似文献

An isotopic dilution method is described for the determination ot plutonium in samples of irradiated uranium using a 242Pu tracer. An aliquot of tracer is added to the sample and the mixture treated to ensure isotopic exchange; plutonium is then separated by an ion exchange procedure and an isotopic analysis made using an M.S.5. mass spectrometer. The precision (3 σ) for an aliquot containing 0.1 μg plutonium is 0.6%. A possible application of the method would be its use for control analyses of the feed solution in a chemical plant processing natural uranium fuel elements as, for example, the Windscale primary separation plant.  相似文献

The effect of physicochemical parameters such as pH, salinity (e.g. [NaCl]) and competitive cation (e.g. Ca2+ and Fe3+) concentration on the separation recovery of plutonium and uranium from aqueous solutions by cation exchange has been investigated. The investigation was performed to evaluate the applicability of cation exchange as separation and pre-concentration method prior to the radiometric analysis of uranium and plutonium isotopes in natural water samples. Application of the method to test solutions of constant radionuclide concentration and variable composition (0.1, 0.5 and 1 M NaCl; 0.1 and 0.5 M Ca(NO3)2; 0.1 and 1 mM FeCl3; 10) has generally shown that: (1) the optimum pH is 4.5 for uranium and plutonium, (2) increasing salinity results in slightly lower for uranium and significantly higher chemical recovery plutonium and (3) the presence of Ca(II) cations doesn’t significantly affect the chemical recovery of both radionuclides. Contrary, the presence of Fe(III) cations ([Fe(III)] > 0.1 mM) results in significantly lower chemical recovery for both radionuclides (<50%). The later is attributed to the formation of Fe(III) colloids, which present increased chemical affinity for uranium and plutonium and hence compete with the radionuclide binding by the resin. Nevertheless, the results indicate that the method could be successfully applied to a wide range of natural waters.  相似文献

A reverse isotope dilution alpha spectrometric /R-IDAS/ method using239Pu as a spike is described for the determination of plutonium concentration in high burn-up fuel samples wth238Pu/(239Pu+240Pu) alpha activity ratio >0.5, without resorting to any purification from241Am and a bulk of other impurities. It involves the addition of a pre-clibrated spike solution to a known aliquot of the plutonium sample solution followed by source preparation using TEG as a spreading agent. The results obtained on a number of plutonium samples containing 20–80% of241Am /alpha activity wise/ using this method are compared with those achieved by R-IDAS using purification with TTA, with respect to precision and accuracy. Precision and accuracy of 0.5% are demonstrated. This method eliminates the need of any separation and purification of plutonium from241Am and a bulk of other impurities like uranium.  相似文献

The concentrations of238Pu,239,240Pu and241Am were determined in eight sediment samples, collected from the bed of the Romanian sector of the Danube river and the Black Sea coast during 1994 and 1995. Fusion with potassium carbonate was used to achieve complete dissolution of the samples. Tracers,242Pu and243Am, were added and the separation of plutonium from americium, uranium and thorium was performed by anion exchange. Americium was separated from uranium in two steps, using a conventional anion exchange resin and an extraction chromatographic resin for transuranics. After electrodeposition on stainless steel discs the nuclides were counted with -spectrometry with -PIPS detectors. The total plutonium concentrations obtained by this method were compared with the acid leachable plutonium concentrations reported for the same samples in a previous paper.  相似文献

An extraction chromatographic method is described for the pre-concentration and separation of thorium, uranium, plutonium and americium in human soft tissues. Tissues such as lung and liver are oven dried at 120°C, ashed at 450°C and the ashed sample is alternately wet (HNO3/H2O2) and dry ashed, and then dissolved in 8M HCl. Because of the complex matrix and large sample samples (up to 1500 g), the actinides were preconcentrated from the tissue solution using the TRUTM resin (EIChroM) prior to elemental separation by extraction chromatography and determination of americium, plutonium, uranium and thorium by alpha spectrometry. The actinides were eluted from the preconcentration column and each actinide was individually eluted on TEVATM and TRUTM resin columns in a tandem configuration. Actinide activities were then determined by alpha spectrometry after electrodeposition from a sulfate medium. The method was validated by analyzing human tissue samples previously analyzed for americium, plutonium, uranium and thorium in the United States Transuranium and Uranium Registries (USTUR). Two National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Standard Reference Materials, SRM 4351-Human Lung and SRM 4352-Human Liver were also analyzed. Tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) is the key complexant within the plutonium and uranium reduction extraction process used to extract uranium and plutonium from used nuclear fuel. During reprocessing TBP degrades to dibutyl phosphate (DBP), butyl acid phosphate (MBP), butanol, and phosphoric acid over time. A method for rapidly monitoring TBP degradation is needed for the support of nuclear forensics. Therefore, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometry-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) technique was developed to determine approximate peak intensity ratios of TBP and its degradation products. The technique was developed by combining variable concentrations of TBP, DBP, and MBP to simulate TBP degradation. This method is achieved by analyzing selected peak positions and peak intensity ratios of TBP and DBP at different stages of degradation. The developed technique was tested on TBP samples degraded with nitric acid. In mock degradation samples, the 1,235 cm?1 peak position shifts to 1,220 cm?1 as the concentration of TBP decreases and DBP increases. Peak intensity ratios of TBP positions at 1,279 and 1,020 cm?1 relative to DBP positions at 909 and 1,003 cm?1 demonstrate an increasing trend as the concentration of DBP increases. The same peak intensity ratios were used to analyze DBP relative to MBP whereas a decreasing trend is seen with increasing DBP concentrations. The technique developed from this study may be used as a tool to determine TBP degradation in nuclear reprocessing via a rapid FTIR-ATR measurement without gas chromatography analysis.  相似文献

Oxygen and ammonia were evaluated as reaction gases for the chemical separation between uranium and plutonium in the bandpass reaction cell or dynamic reaction cell (DRC) of the ELAN DRC II mass spectrometer. Both uranium and plutonium demonstrated similar reactivity with oxygen giving rise to corresponding oxides. At the same time, remarkable selectivity in the reaction with ammonia was observed. While uranium was rapidly converted into UNH 2+ and UN2H 4+ , plutonium remained unreactive in the DRC pressurized with ammonia. This difference in the reactivity allowed the determination of plutonium isotopes in urine and water samples containing excess uranium without preceding separation procedure. Detection limits of 0.245, 0.092, 0.270 and 0.237 ng L–1 were obtained for 238Pu, 239Pu, 240Pu and 242Pu, respectively, in urine spiked with 10 g L–1 of U.  相似文献

Actinide elements concentrations in the products of near release from CNPP accident were estimated. The data on uranium,237Np,241Am and plutonium and curium isotopes content in fuel particles are given. Sums of -emitting radionuclides and plutonium isotopes in reactor graphite particles and of uranium,242Cm,239+240Pu isotopes in the soil and aerosol samples were also determined. By 1989 soil and dust contamination in near release of the accident is due to long-lived -emitting plutonium isotopes.  相似文献
