We report the first observation of discrete optical surface solitons at the interface between a nonlinear self-focusing waveguide lattice and a continuous medium. The effect of power on the localization process of these optical self-trapped states at the edge of an AlGaAs waveguide array is investigated in detail. Our experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions.  相似文献

We study the properties of surface solitons generated at the edge of a semi-infinite photonic lattice in nonlinear quadratic media, namely two-color surface lattice solitons. We analyze the impact of phase mismatch on the existence and stability of nonlinear surface modes and find novel classes of two-color twisted surface solitons, which are stable in a large domain of their existence.  相似文献

We discover that, at the edge of an optical lattice imprinted in a saturable nonlinear medium, one-dimensional surface solitons exist only within a band of light intensities and that they cease to exist when the lattice depth exceeds an upper threshold. We also reveal the generation of arrays of two-dimensional surface solitons mediated by the transverse modulational instability of one-dimensional solitons, a process that is found to exhibit specific features associated to properties of the optical lattice.  相似文献

We investigate the stability properties of optical solitons in a chirped PT-symmetric lattice whose frequency changes in the transverse direction. Linear-stability analysis together with the direct propagation simulations demonstrates that the chirped lattice can improve the stability of optical solitons dramatically. The instability of fundamental solitons can be completely suppressed if the chirp rate exceeds a critical value. A broad stability area of dipole solitons appears if the lattice is appropriately chirped. Thus, we propose an effective way to suppress the instability of solitons in PT-symmetric potentials.  相似文献

We report systematic results of collisions between discrete spatiotemporal optical solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices. We show that the outcomes of collisions strongly depend on the initial soliton parameters, such as their input amplitudes (energies) and their transverse velocities. Four generic outcomes are identified in the study of collisions between discrete light bullets located in the corner, at the edge, and in the center of the photonic lattice: (a) merger of both low and high amplitude solitons into a single one, at small values of the kick parameter (soliton transverse velocity), (b) spreading of low amplitude solitons at intermediate values of the kick parameter, (c) bouncing of high amplitude solitons at intermediate values of the kick parameter, which is accompanied by a sharp modification of input soliton transverse velocities, and (d) quasi-elastic (symmetric) interactions of both low and high amplitude solitons at large values of the kick parameter.  相似文献

Systematic results of collisions between discrete spatiotemporal dissipative Ginzburg-Landau solitons in two-dimensional photonic lattices are reported. The generic outcomes are identified for (i) the collision of two identical solitons located in the corner, at the edge, and in the center of the photonic lattice, and for (ii) the collision of two non-identical corner and edge solitons located at different distances from the boundaries of the photonic lattice. Depending on the values of the kick (collision momentum) and of the nonlinear (cubic) gain, the collision scenarios include soliton merging, creation of an extra soliton, soliton bouncing, soliton spreading, and quasi-elastic (symmetric) interactions.  相似文献

离散孤子标志着从线性到非线性,从连续到非连续,从相干到非相干,人们对孤子认识的一个飞越.文章简要回顾了近期在二维光致光子晶格结构中有关空间离散光孤子的研究,包括基模离散孤子、类矢量离散孤子、离散偶极孤子、离散涡旋孤子和离散孤子串等.在非线性光折变晶体里用部分相干光诱导的波导阵列中,对每一种离散孤子,都清楚地观测到光从二维的离散衍射状态到自囚禁形成离散孤子的转变过程,获得的结果将对其他离散非线性系统中类似现象的研究有所启发.  相似文献

We report on the existence of multicolor solitons supported by periodic lattices made from quadratic nonlinear media. Such lattice solitons bridge the gap between continuous solitons in uniform media and discrete solitons in strongly localized systems and exhibit a wealth of new features. We discovered that, in contrast to uniform media, multipeaked lattice solitons are stable. Thus they open new opportunities for all-optical switching based on soliton packets.  相似文献

We report the observation of surface solitons in chirped semi-infinite waveguide arrays whose waveguides exhibit exponentially decreasing refractive indices. We show that the power threshold for surface wave formation decreases with an increase of the array chirp and that for sufficiently large chirp values linear surface modes are supported.  相似文献

We report the first experimental demonstration of ring-shaped photonic lattices by optical induction and the formation of discrete solitons in such radially symmetric lattices. The transition from discrete diffraction to single-channel guidance or nonlinear self-trapping of a probe beam is achieved by fine-tuning the lattice potential or the focusing nonlinearity. In addition to solitons trapped in the lattice center and in different lattice rings, we demonstrate controlled soliton rotation in the Bessel-like ring lattices.  相似文献

We report the first experimental observation of discrete solitons in an array of optically induced waveguides. The waveguide lattice is induced in real time by illuminating a photorefractive crystal with a pair of interfering plane waves. We demonstrate two types of bright discrete solitons: in-phase self-localized states and the staggered (pi out-of-phase) soliton family. This experiment is the first observation of bright staggered solitons in any physical system. Our scheme paves the way for reconfigurable focusing and defocusing photonic lattices where low-power (mW) discrete solitons can be thoroughly investigated.  相似文献

We discuss the formation of self-trapped localized states near the edge of a semi-infinite array of nonlinear optical waveguides. We study a crossover from nonlinear surface states to discrete solitons by analyzing the families of odd and even modes centered at finite distances from the surface and reveal the physical mechanism of the nonlinearity-induced stabilization of surface modes.  相似文献

We investigate both experimentally and theoretically the interaction between a light beam and a photonic lattice optically induced with partially coherent light. We demonstrate a clear transition from two-dimensional discrete diffraction to discrete solitons in such a partially coherent lattice and show that the nonlinear interaction process is associated with a host of new phenomena including lattice dislocation, lattice deformation, and creation of structures akin to optical polarons.  相似文献

We investigate the formation of fundamental discrete solitons and dipole-mode gap solitons in triangular photonic lattices imprinted in photorefractive nonlinear media. These lattices are strongly affected by the photorefractive anisotropy, resulting in orientation-dependent refractive index structures with reduced symmetry. It is demonstrated that two different orientations of the lattice wave enable the formation of fundamental discrete solitons in the total internal reflection gap. Furthermore, it is shown that one lattice orientation additionally supports dipole-mode solitons in the Bragg reflection gap. We show that optically induced photonic lattices in a nonconventionally biased photorefractive crystal can support the formation of discrete and gap solitons owing to a mechanism that differs from the conventional screening effect. Both the bias direction and the lattice orientation can dramatically influence the nonlinear beam-propagation dynamics. We demonstrate a transition from self-focusing to -defocusing and from discrete to gap solitons solely by adjusting the optical-beam orientation.  相似文献

We study experimentally, analytically and numerically the backward-wave propagation, and formation of discrete bright and dark solitons in a nonlinear electrical lattice. We observe experimentally that a focusing (defocusing) effect occurs above (below) a certain carrier frequency threshold, and backward-propagating bright (dark) discrete solitons are formed. We develop a discrete model emulating the relevant circuit and benchmark its linear properties against the experimental dispersion relation. Using a perturbation method, we derive a nonlinear Schrödinger equation, that predicts accurately the carrier frequency threshold. Finally, we use numerical simulations to corroborate our findings and monitor the space-time evolution of the discrete solitons.  相似文献

We have investigated both theoretically and experimentally the power threshold of discrete Kerr surface solitons at the interface between a discrete one-dimensional (1D) (waveguide array) and a continuous 1D (slab waveguide) AlGaAs medium. Decreasing power thresholds were predicted and measured for soliton trapping at sites with increasing distance from the boundary. The thresholds approached asymptotically the power required for a discrete soliton of equivalent width in an infinite lattice. The minimum threshold coincided with a minimum in the interchannel coupling strength.  相似文献

We study various families of two-dimensional discrete or lattice solitons, and show that they are possible only when their power level exceeds a critical threshold. In addition, we show that gap-lattice solitons exist only when the lattice possesses a complete 2D band gap. Our results suggest that these conditions are universally valid, irrespective of the nature of the nonlinearity or the specific structure of the index lattice. The analysis explains fundamental aspects of behavior of two-dimensional discrete solitons that have been very recently observed in photosensitive optical crystals.  相似文献

Vortex solitons with a ring vortex core residing in a single lattice site in the semi-infinite gap of square optical lattices are reported. These solitons are no longer bound states of the Bloch-wave unit (Bloch-wave distribution in one lattice site) at the band edge of the periodic lattice, and consequently they do not bifurcate from the corresponding band edge. For saturable nonlinearity, one family of such solitons is found, and its existing curve forms a closed loop, which is very surprising. For Kerr nonlinearity, two families of such vortex solitons are found.  相似文献

We put forward the existence of surface gap solitons at the interface between uniform media and an optical lattice with defocusing nonlinearity. Such new type of solitons forms when the incident and reflected waves at the interface of the lattice experience Bragg scattering, and feature a combination of the unique properties of both surface waves and gap solitons. We discover that gap surface solitons exist only when the lattice depth exceeds a threshold value, that they can be made completely stable, and that they can form stable bound states.  相似文献
