The selective adsorption of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on a pH-reversible PDMAEMA patterned gold surface is presented. In acidic conditions, a selective CNTs adsorption onto the polymer brushes is obtained due to ammonium-π interactions. The reversible behavior was shown by successive treatments in both alkaline and acidic solutions with CNTs.  相似文献

Rational construction of interfaces based on multicomponent responsive systems in which molecular transport is mediated by structures of nanoscale dimensions has become a very fertile research area in biomimetic supramolecular chemistry. Herein, we describe the creation of hybrid mesostructured interfaces with reversible gate-like transport properties that can be controlled by chemical inputs, such as protons or calcium ions. This was accomplished by taking advantage of the surface-initiated polymerization of 2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl phosphate (MEP) monomer units into and onto mesoporous silica thin films. In this way, phosphate-bearing polymer brushes were used as "gatekeepers" located not only on the outer surface of mesoporous thin films but also in the inner environment of the porous scaffold. Pore-confined PMEP brushes respond to the external triggering chemical signals not only by altering their physicochemical properties but also by switching the transport properties of the mesoporous film. The ion-gate response/operation was based on the protonation and/or chelation of phosphate monomer units in which the polymer brush works as an off-on switch in response to the presence of protons or Ca(2+) ions. The hybrid meso-architectured interface and their functional features were studied by a combination of experimental techniques including ellipso-porosimetry, cyclic voltammetry, X-ray reflectivity, grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ atomic force microscopy. In this context, we believe that the integration of stimuli-responsive polymer brushes into nanoscopic supramolecular architectures would provide new routes toward multifunctional biomimetic nanosystems displaying transport properties similar to those encountered in biological ligand-gated ion channels.  相似文献

This paper describes the fabrication of hybrid nanoassemblies with polymer brushes and gold nanoparticles enabling detection of nanoscale optical changes based on localized surface plasmon resonance. The reversible and thermosensitive nanoscale actuation is achieved by combining stimuli-responsive polymer brushes and gold nanoparticles independently and selectively assembled on substrates. These hybrid nanoassemblies are assembled on numerous substrates and will be applicable for optoelectronics, nanoactuator, and nanosensor applications.  相似文献

We present the synthesis of reactive polymer brushes prepared by surface reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer polymerization of pentafluorophenyl acrylate. The reactive ester moieties can be used to functionalize the polymer brush film with virtually any functionality by simple post‐polymerization modification with amines. Dithiobenzoic acid benzyl‐(4‐ethyltrimethoxylsilyl) ester was used as the surface chain transfer agent (S‐CTA) and the anchoring group onto the silicon substrates. Reactive polymer brushes with adjustable molecular weight, high grafting density, and conformal coverage through the grafting‐from approach were obtained. Subsequently, the reactive polymer brushes were converted with amino‐spiropyrans resulting in reversible light‐responsive polymer brush films. The wetting behavior could be altered by irradiation with ultraviolet (UV) or visible light. Furthermore, a patterned surface of polymer brushes was obtained using a lithography technique. UV irradiation of the S‐CTA‐modified substrates leads to a selective degradation of S‐CTA in the exposed areas and gives patterned activated polymer brushes after a subsequent RAFT polymerization step. Conversion of the patterned polymer brushes with 5‐((2‐aminoethyl)amino)naphthalene‐1‐sulfonic acid resulted in patterned fluorescent polymer brush films. The utilization of reactive polymer brushes offers an easy approach in the fabrication of highly functional brushes, even for functionalities whose introduction is limited by other strategies. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Inspired by the dynamics of bacterial swarming, we report a swarm of polymer‐brush‐grafted, glucose‐oxidase‐powered Janus gold nanoswimmers with a positive, macroscale chemotactic behavior. These nanoswimmers are prepared through the grafting of polymer brushes onto one side of gold nanoparticles, followed by functionalization with glucose oxidase on the other side. The resulting polymer‐brush‐functionalized Janus gold nanoswimmers exhibit efficient propulsion with a velocity of up to approximately 120 body lengths s?1 in the presence of glucose. The comparative analysis of their kinematic behavior reveals that the grafted polymer brushes significantly improve the translational diffusion of Janus gold nanoswimmers. Particularly, these bacteria‐mimicking Janus gold nanoswimmers display a collectively chemotactic motion along the concentration gradient of a glucose resource, which could be observed at the macroscale.  相似文献

We report actively controlled transport that is thermally switchable and size-selective in a nanocapillary array membrane (NCAM) prepared by grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) brushes onto the exterior surface of a Au-coated polycarbonate track-etched membrane. A smooth Au layer on the membrane surface, which is key to obtaining a uniform polymer film, was prepared by thermal evaporation of approximately 50 nm Au on both exterior surfaces. After evaporation, the inner diameter of the pore is reduced slightly, but the NCAM retains a narrow pore size distribution. PNIPPAm brushes with 10-30 nm (dry film) thickness were grafted onto the Au surface through surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using a disulfide initiator, (BrC(CH3)2COO(CH2)11S)2. Molecular transport through the PNIPAAm polymer brush-modified NCAMs was investigated by real-time fluorescence measurements using fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-labeled dextrans ranging from 4.4 to 282 kDa in membranes with variable initial pore diameters (80, 100, and 200 nm) and different PNIPAAm thicknesses. Manipulating the temperature of the NCAM through the PNIPAAm lower critical solution temperature (LCST) causes large, size-dependent changes in the transport rates. Over specific ranges of probe size, transport is completely blocked below the LCST but strongly allowed above the LCST. The combination of the highly uniform PNIPAAm brush and the monodisperse pore size distribution is critical in producing highly reproducible switching behavior. Furthermore, the reversible nature of the switching raises the possibility of using them as actively controlled filtration devices.  相似文献

We develop a new process for the preparation of synergistic antifouling functional coatings on gold surfaces via a “grafting to” approach. The strategy includes a synthetic step of polymer brushes that consist of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and zwitterionic side chains via a typical reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization process, and a subsequent deposition of the polymer brushes onto a gold substrate. The presence of PEG and zwitterion chains on these polymer brush-coated gold surfaces has been proved to have a synergistic effect on the final antifouling property of the coating. PEG chains lower the electrostatic repulsion between zwitterionic polymer chains and increase their graft density on gold surfaces, while zwitterionic polymer effectively improves the antifouling property that is offered by PEG chains alone. Protein adsorption and cell attachment assays tests are conducted to confirm that this copolymer layer on gold surface has a pronounced resistance against proteins such as Bovine serum albumin and Lysozyme. Importantly, the antifouling property can be systematically adjusted by varying the molar ratio of PEG to zwitterionic chains in the final coating copolymer.  相似文献

One of the sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA) monomers, N-(3-sulfopropyl)-N-(methacryloxyethyl)-N,N-dimethylammonium betaine, was polymerized onto initiator-covered gold surfaces using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) to form uniform polymer brushes. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with ATRP initiators were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The thickness of grafted poly(SBMA) films was measured by ellipsometry. Fibrinogen adsorption on poly(SBMA) grafted surfaces was measured with a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor. Two approaches were compared to graft ATRP initiators onto gold surfaces for surface polymerization and subsequent protein adsorption on these polymer grafted surfaces. The first was to prepare a SAM from omega-mercaptoundecyl bromoisobutyrate onto a gold surface. Superlow fouling surfaces with well-controlled poly(SBMA) brushes were achieved using this approach (e.g., fibrinogen adsorption <0.3 ng/cm2). The second approach was to react bromoisobutyryl bromide with a hydroxyl-terminated SAM on a gold surface. Although protein adsorption decreased as the density of surface initiators increased, the surface prepared using the second approach was not able to achieve as low protein adsorption as the first approach. Key parameters to achieve superlow fouling surfaces were studied and discussed.  相似文献

A new method of reversibly moving CdS nanoparticles in the perpendicular direction was developed on the basis of the phase separation of block copolymer brushes. Polystyrene-b-(poly(methyl methacrylate)-co-poly(cadmium dimethacrylate)) (PS-b-(PMMA-co-PCdMA)) brushes were grafted from the silicon wafer by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). By exposing the polymer brushes to H2S gas, PS-b-(PMMA-co-PCdMA) brushes were converted to polystyrene-b-(poly(methyl methacrylate)-co-poly(methacrylic acid)(CdS)) (PS-b-(PMMA-co-PMAA(CdS))) brushes, in which CdS nanoparticles were chemically bonded by the carboxylic groups of PMAA segment. Alternating treatment of the PS-b-(PMMA-co-PMAA(CdS)) brushes by selective solvents for the outer block (a mixed solvent of acetone and ethanol) and the inner PS block (toluene) induced perpendicular phase separation of polymer brushes, which resulted in the reversible lifting and lowering of CdS nanoparticles in the perpendicular direction. The extent of movement can be adjusted by the relative thickness of two blocks of the polymer brushes.  相似文献

Polyelectrolyte brushes were built on mica by anchoring polystyrene-poly(acrylic acid) (PS-b-PAA) diblock copolymers at a controlled surface density in a polystyrene monolayer covalently attached to OH-activated mica surfaces. Compared to physisorbed polymer brushes, these irreversibly attached charged brushes allow the polymer grafting density to remain constant upon changes in environmental conditions (e.g., pH, salt concentration, compression, and shear). The normal interaction and friction forces as a function of surface separation distance and at different concentrations of added salt (NaCl) were investigated using a surface forces apparatus. The interaction force profiles were completely reversible both on loading and receding and were purely repulsive. For a constant polymer grafting density, the influence of the polyelectrolyte charges and the Debye screening effect on the overall interaction forces was investigated. The experimental interaction force profiles agree very well with scaling models developed for neutral and charged polymer brushes. The variation of the friction force between two PAA brushes in motion with respect to each other as a function of surface separation distance appeared to be similar to that observed with neutral brushes. This similarity suggests that the increase in friction is associated with an increase in mutual interpenetration upon compression as observed with neutral polymers. The effect of the PAA charges and added ions was more significant on the repulsive normal forces than on the friction forces. The reversible characteristics of the normal force profiles and friction measurements confirmed the strong attachment of the PAA brushes to the mica substrate. High friction coefficients (ca 0.3) were measured at relatively high pressures (40 atm) with no surface damage or polymer removal.  相似文献

This article describes a general synthetic route to laterally distinctive multicomponent polymer brushes on gold. The procedure involves repeated surface patterning using microcontact printing (muCP) of initiator-terminated thiols without backfilling with inert thiols and surface-initiated atomic transfer radical polymerization steps. In between brush growth, the remaining initiator moieties are deactivated to avoid reinitiation on existing brushes. Optical and fluorescence microscopy, atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy have been used to characterize every step of this procedure. We found that brushes can be grown from initiator-modified surfaces that contain bare gold areas and that these areas remain available for further patterning using muCP. To demonstrate the flexibility of this approach, surfaces containing four different polymer brushes in patterns ranging from 2 x 4 microm lines to 20 x 20 microm squares were fabricated. The range of chemical functionalities incorporated includes cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, as well as thermally responsive polymers.  相似文献

This feature article deals with the self assembly and physical chemistry of polyelectrolytes: multilayers and brushes. The article highlights the interesting behavior of polyelectrolytes in nanoscale assemblies, giving more insight into the complexity of the formation of the assemblies. The water content of multilayers and brushes is studied during the assembly and in different ionic strengths. Similarities are found in the behavior of the brushes and multilayers with ionic strength, with regard to changes in the thickness and the water content. An invariance of the zeta potential with ionic strength is also observed for both systems, which can be explained as a result of conformational changes of the polymer chains. Finally, the combination of brushes and multilayers for surface modification is presented.  相似文献

The interaction between bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ZnS quantum dots (QDs) was studied by fluorescence, UV-vis spectroscopic techniques. The results showed that the fluorescence of BSA was strongly quenched by ZnS QDs and the quenching mechanism was discussed to be a static quenching procedure, which was proved by quenching rate constant K(q.) The recorded UV-vis data and the fluorescence data quenching by the QDs demonstrated that the interaction between them leads to the formation of QDs-BSA complex. Furthermore, the temperature effects on the structural and spectroscopic properties of individual QDs and protein and their bioconjugates (QDs-BSA) were also researched. It was found that, compared to the monotonically decrease of the individual QDs fluorescence intensity, the temperature dependence of the QDs-BSA emission had a much more complex behavior, highly sensitive to the conformational changes of the protein.  相似文献

The effect of urea on the conformational behavior of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) in dilute aqueous solution has been investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy, fluorescence quenching and fluorescence anisotropy measurements via pyrene (Py) probe and acenaphthylene (ACE) label studies. It was demonstrated that urea promotes the partitioning of the hydrophobic probe, Py, towards the bulk aqueous phase at temperatures above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the polymer due to swelling of the compact coil conformation. However, the compact coil structure of the polymer at temperatures greater than its LCST is not completely destroyed, even for urea concentrations up to 3 M, at which the phase transition is hardly observed. As expected, urea has little effect on the conformational behavior of PNIPAM at temperatures below its LCST. Received: 9 February 2000/Accepted: 13 June 2000  相似文献

Surface-tethered oppositely charged weak polyelectrolyte block copolymer brushes composed of poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (P2VP) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) were grown from the Si wafer by atom-transfer radical polymerization. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes were prepared through hydrolysis of the second PtBA block to the corresponding acrylic acid. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes with different PAA block length were obtained. The P2VP-b-PAA brushes revealed a unique reversible wetting behavior with pH. The difference between the solubility parameters for P2VP and PAA, the changes of surface chemical composition and surface roughness, and the reversible wetting behavior illustrated that the surface rearrangement occurred during treatment of the P2VP-b-PAA brushes by aqueous solution with different pH value. The reversible properties of the P2VP-b-PAA brushes can be used to regulate the adsorption of the sulfonated PS nanoparticles.  相似文献

A chemically grafted tris(trimethylsiloxy)silyl (tris(TMS)) monolayer on a silicon oxide substrate was used as a template for creating nanoclusters of polymer brushes. Polymer brushes were synthesized by surface-initiated polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and tert-butyl methacrylate (t-BMA) via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from alpha-bromoester groups tethered to the residual silanol groups on the silicon surface after generating a range of tris(TMS) coverage. CuBr/bpy and CuBr/PMDETA were used as the catalytic system for PMPC and Pt-BMA synthesis, respectively. The percentage of tris(TMS) coverage significantly influenced the thickness and morphology of the polymer brushes. Protrusions representing self-aggregation of PMPC brushes in nanopores as visualized by AFM analysis evidently suggested that PMPC brushes were distributed nanoscopically on the surface. The protrusion size and surface roughness corresponded quite well with the graft density of PMPC brushes. The fact that Pt-BMA brushes grown from nanopores were almost featureless implies that self-aggregation of PMPC brushes is truly a consequence of phase incompatibility between hydrophilic PMPC brushes and hydrophobic tris(TMS). The anti-fouling characteristic of PMPC brushes, inferred from plasma protein adsorption, was subsequently varied by controlling the surface coverage ratio between PMPC brushes and tris(TMS).  相似文献

We report a facile approach to preparing binary mixed polymer brushes and free-standing films by combining the layer-by-layer and surface-initiated polymerization (LbL-SIP) techniques. Specifically, the grafting of mixed polymer brushes of poly(n-isopropylacrylamide) and polystyrene (pNIPAM-pSt) onto LbL-macroinitiator-modified planar substrates is described. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and free radical polymerization (FRP) techniques were employed for the syntheses of pNIPAM and pSt, respectively, yielding pNIPAM-pSt mixed polymer brushes. The composition of the two polymers was controlled by varying the number of macroinitiator layers deposited on the substrate (i.e., LbL layers = 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20); consequently, mixed brushes of different thicknesses and composition ratios were obtained. Moreover, the switching behavior of the LbL-mixed brush films as a function of solvent and temperature was demonstrated and evaluated by water contact angle and atomic force microscopy (AFM) experiments. It was found that both the solvent and temperature stimuli responses were a function of the mixed brush composition and thickness ratio where the dominant component played a larger role in the response behavior. Furthermore, the ability to obtain free-standing films was exploited. The LbL technique provided the macroinitiator density variation necessary for the preparation of stable free-standing mixed brush films. Specifically, the free-standing films exhibited the rigidity to withstand changes in the solvent and temperature environment and at the same time were flexible enough to respond accordingly to external stimuli.  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of spherical sugar-containing polymer brushes consisting of PS cores onto which chains of sugar-containing polymers have been grafted via two different techniques are described. Photopolymerization in aqueous dispersion using the functional monomer MAGlc and crosslinked or non-crosslinked PS particles covered with a thin layer of photo-initiator yielded homogeneous glycopolymer brushes attached to spherical PS cores. As an alternative, ATRP was used to graft poly-(N-acetylglucosamine) arms from crosslinked PS cores. Deprotection of the grafted brushes led to water-soluble particles that act as carriers for catalytically active gold nanoparticles. These glycopolymer chains show a high affinity to adsorb WGA whereas no binding to BSA or PNA could be detected.  相似文献
