Huilgol's paper [1] is discussed critically. It is shown that there are significant errors in each section of the paper. His argument depends critically on a refusal to recognize that when a statement is made that a functional of a tensor function is invariant under a group of transformations, these transformations must be constants and that otherwise the statement is meaningless. Furthermore, he consistently ignores the contradictions to which this refusal leads.  相似文献

Extension of thin non-uniform filaments of Newtonian and power-law fluids was fond to be governed by the classical wave equation, when inertia, surface tension, air drag and gravitational pull are negligible and the filaments are isothermal. The extension can either be one-shot transient stretching or transients in continuous drawing. Several simple transients in melt spinning were discussed as solutions of the classical wave equation with the phenomenon of wave reflection found to occur at the spinneret. The sustained oscillation of draw resonance encountered in unstable melt spinning was found to be mathematically equivalent to a repetitive whip lashing movement of a string under tension.  相似文献

An integral constitutive equation describing the strain history in terms of the Cauchy-Green and Finger tensors is presented. Its memory functions, which correspond to a flow-dependent continuous spectrum of relaxation times, depend on the invariants of the Cauchy-Green and Finger rate of strain tensors. Theoretical predictions resulting from this equation are compared with experimental data for some types of flow. Using the Laguerre polynomial expansion, the basic equation is generalized.  相似文献

An approximate solution for the problem of fluid flow through a rigid tube with a mild constriction is given. It is assumed that the fluid is visco-elastic (Maxwell fluid) and the constriction is non-symmetric with respect to the radial distance. A theoretical result is given for the wall shear stress and numerical solutions are shown graphically for different values of the relaxation time and the shape parameter of the constriction profile.  相似文献

An analysis of particle orientation in a dilute suspension of rodlike particles in a second-order fluid was performed to examine the effects of the elasticity of the fluid and of weak Brownian diffusion of the particle on its orientation. Distributions of particle orientation under a simple shear flow with rate of shearg have been obtained as a function of a single nondimensional parameter, * =/r e 2 (D/g), which combines the effects of the particle aspect ratior e , the weak fluid elasticity, and the weak Brownian rotation diffusion coefficientD of the particle. In the limit of larger e , when the fluid elasticity is strong enough to overcome the rotational diffusion effect on the particle motion, most of the particles will orient close to the vorticity axis. A new shear-thinning mechanism of the shear viscosity of such systems is predicted by the theory.  相似文献

In this report it is shown that the place boundary-value problem, for a small deformation superimposed on the large cone-and-plate deformation of a Mooney-Rivlin material, has no unique solution at some displacement angles of the cone. The kinematics of the small deformation are chosen such that the problem is reduced to a set of ordinary differential equations. With respect to this restricted class of kinematics the cone-and-plate deformation is unstable.  相似文献

A boundary element method is used to simulate the unsteady motion of a sphere falling under gravity along the centreline of a cylindrical tube containing a viscoelastic fluid. The fluid is modelled by the upper-convected Maxwell constitutive equation. Results show that the viscoelasticity of the liquid leads to a damped oscillation in sphere velocity about its terminal value. The maximum sphere velocity, which occurs in the first overshoot, is approximately proportional to the square root of the Weissenberg number when the ratio of the sphere radius to the tube radius is sufficiently small. Particular attention is also paid to the wall effects. It is shown that a closer wall reduces the oscillatory amplitude of the sphere velocity but increases its frequency. The results suggest that the falling-ball technique, which is now widely used for viscosity measurement, might also be used for the determination of a relaxation time for a viscoelastic fluid.  相似文献

Extended irreversible thermodynamics provides an evolution equation for the viscous pressure tensor which reduces to the Jeffrey's constitutive equation in the long-wave limit. in contrast with Jeffrey's equation, the equation obtained in extended irreversible thermodynamics leads to finite speed of propagation for shear pulses. The nonlocal effects are included into the theory by allowing the entropy to depend on higher-order fluxes, instead of spatial gradients. The use of the former ones is clearly advantageous in the high-frequency domain.  相似文献

A comparison is made between elongational properties predicted by the FENE-P dumbbell rheological equation of state for fibre spinning and true values obtained from pure elongation. True values are found by using a constant elongation rate in the model and calculating the steady state values of the stresses. Two new averaging procedures are suggested for extracting elongational properties from fibre spinning experiments. It is suggested that a variety of flow conditions be used and care be taken when determining these properties. The rheological model is found to predict adequately shear and elongational flow properties of the polyacrylamide-type of Boger or ideal elastic fluid.  相似文献

Analytical solutions for the plane Couette flow and the plane Poiseuille flow of the one-mode Giesekus fluid without any retardation time have been obtained by considering the domain of definition for each of the two branch solutions which arise due to the presence of the quadratic stress terms in the constitutive equations. For each fixed value of the mobility parametera, the limiting value of the Weissenberg number for the upper branch solution, i.e., the physically realistic solution is determined in terms of the corresponding dimensionless shear stress for the plane Couette flow and in terms of the corresponding dimensionless pressure gradient for the plane Poiseuille flow. In the case of the plane Couette flow, it is shown that fora falling in the range 0a1/2 only the physically realistic solution exists while for 1/2<a 1 a nonphysical solution coexists with the realistic one. In the case of the plane Poiseuille flow, it is shown that the non-physical solution cannot even exist around the center plane of the channel, and the effects of the mobility parameter and the dimensionless pressure gradient on the flow variables are investigated. Possible extensions of the present approach to other steady simple shear flows with and without the introduction of the retardation time are also discussed.  相似文献

Two decoupled methods for the finite element solution of the planar stick-slip transition problem with Oldroyd-B fluids, namely the method of characteristics and the Lesaint-Raviart technique, are presented and compared. These procedures are used for the local treatment of the stress transport equation imbedded in the constitutive law and allow the approximation of stresses with discontinuous shape functions. Computations are carried out up to a Deborah number of 4 and the methods are shown to yield fairly similar results.  相似文献

There is experimental evidence to suggest that even under steady-state conditions the velocity of solid spheres or bubbles moving through viscoelastic fluids can become time dependent. One of the possible explanations offered for interpreting this phenomenon has been the generation of a polymer depleted layer in the line of passage of the particles, which disappears due to the counterbalancing effect of molecular diffusion in the long range. We have done some careful experiments and measured these concentrations to show that no such depletion layers are formed. Alternative explanations of the phenomenon have been examined and the importance of the possible effects of microstructures generated through temporary associations has been emphasised.  相似文献

The motion of freely suspended rodlike particles has been observed in the pressure-driven flow between the two flat plates of a Hele Shaw flow cell at low Reynolds numbers. Data are reported for rodlike particles with aspect ratios of 12.0 suspended in a Newtonian fluid for gap thickness to particle length ratios of 3, 6, and 20; and for rodlike particles with aspect ratios between 5 and 8 in a non-Newtonian fluid (79.25 wt.% water, 20.2 wt.% glycerine, and 0.55 wt.% polyacrylamide). For the Newtonian fluid, the time-dependent orientation of the particles near and far from walls was shown to be in quantitative agreement with Jeffery's theory for ellipsoids suspended in a simple shear flow if an effective aspect ratio is calculated from the experimental period of rotation. Particles aligned with the flow direction and less than a particle half-length from a wall interacted irreversibly with the wall. For the non-Newtonian fluid, the timedependent orientation far from a wall was shown to be in qualitative agreement with Leal's theory for a second-order fluid; however, particles that were aligned with the flow direction and were near walls did not rotate.  相似文献

This paper presents an analysis of three-dimensional flows based on the concept of stream tubes and streamlines. In the case of incompressible liquids, the physical domain can be transformed, under certain assumptions, into a cylinder where the streamlines are parallel straight lines. In contrast to classical methods, the unknown to be determined is the transformation between the two domains. This analysis generalizes the formulation already proposed for plane and axisymmetric flows.  相似文献

When viscoelastic fluids flow out from horizontal ducts many cracks and protruding ridges are formed on the jet surface. As far as the authors know, this phenomenon has not yet been reported. The occurrence of the anomalous phenomenon is not affected by inlet flow condition or duct shape.The phenomenon may be divided into three regimes, namely, a stable state, a breakage state, and a multiplication state. In the breakage state one ridge divides into two parts after its growth, and in the multiplication state a new ridge is suddenly formed at a crack point. With increasing shear rate, the flow pattern of the jet changes from the stable state to the breakage state, and then to the multiplication state.Furthermore, a recoil effect is observed. In this effect many air bubbles rush into the duct from the exit when the flow is quickly stopped.  相似文献

The paper is concerned with the squeezing flow of a model suspension fluid. The numerical solution obtained by a time-dependent Boundary Element Method is compared to an asymptotic solution at large radius. It is found that the kinematics are Newtonian in character, and the fibres quickly align themselves radially. Consequently, the squeezing force is only weakly dependent on the initial orientations of the fibres and the device can be used for measuring the effective viscosity of the suspension. The effective viscosity found from the squeezing flow agrees surprisingly well with experimental data and numerical data derived from the falling sphere geometry at low volume fractions ( < 0.1).  相似文献

The peristaltic motion of a non-Newtonian fluid represented by the constitutive equation for a second-order fluid was studied for the case of a planar channel with harmonically undulating extensible walls. A perturbation series for the parameter ( half-width of channel/wave length) obtained explicit terms of 0(2), 0(2Re2) and 0(1Re2) respectively representing curvature, inertia and the non-Newtonian character of the fluid.
