In this study, the effect of the viscous dissipation in steady, laminar mixed convection heat transfer from a heated/cooled vertical flat plate is investigated in both aiding and opposing buoyancy situations. The external flow field is assumed to be uniform. The governing systems of partial differential equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method. A parametric study is performed in order to illustrate the interactive influences of the governing parameters, mainly, the Richardson number, Ri (also known as the mixed convection parameter) and the Eckert number, Ec on the velocity and temperature profiles as well as the friction and heat transfer coefficients. Based on the facts the free stream is either in parallel or reverse to the gravity direction and the plate is heated or cooled, different flow situations are identified. The influence of the viscous dissipation on the heat transfer varied according to the situation. For some limiting cases, the obtained results are validated by comparing with those available from the existing literature. An expression correlating Nu in terms of Pr, Ri and Ec is developed.  相似文献

The effects of suction and injection on steady laminar mixed convection boundary layer flow over a permeable horizontal flat plate in a viscous and incompressible fluid is investigated in this paper. The similarity solutions of the governing boundary layer equations are obtained for some values of the suction and injection parameter f0, the constant exponent n of the wall temperature as well as the mixed convection parameter λ. The resulting system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations is solved numerically for both assisting and opposing flow regimes using a finite-difference scheme known as the Keller-box method. Numerical results for the reduced skin friction coefficient, the reduced local Nusselt number, and the velocity and temperature profiles are obtained for various values of the parameters considered. Dual solutions are found to exist for the opposing flow.  相似文献

The effects of thermal radiation and viscous dissipation on magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) unsteady free-convection flow over a semi-infinite vertical porous plate are analysed. The fluid considered is non-gray (absorption coefficient dependent on wave length). The Network Simulation Method is used to solve the boundary-layer equations based on the finite-difference formulation; only discretization of the spatial co-ordinates is necessary, while time remains as a real continuous variable. This method provides a solution for both transient and steady-state problems at the same time, and programming does not require manipulation of the sophisticated mathematical software that is inherent in other numerical methods. The velocity, temperature, local skin-friction and local Nusselt number are studied for different parameters, including the radiation parameter, Eckert number, magnetic number and suction (or injection).  相似文献

In this paper we investigate the influence of viscous dissipation and Soret effect on natural convection heat and mass transfer from vertical cone in a non-Darcy porous media saturated with non-Newtonian fluid. The surface of the cone and the ambient medium are maintained at constant but different levels of temperature and concentration. The Ostwald-de Waele power law model is used to characterize the non-Newtonian fluid behavior. The governing equations are non-dimensionalized into non-similar form and then solved numerically by local non-similarity method. The effect of non-Darcy parameter, viscous dissipation parameter, Soret parameter, buoyancy ratio, Lewis number and the power-law index parameter on the temperature and concentration field as well as on the heat and mass transfer coefficients is analyzed.  相似文献

In this article, the mixed convective flow of a micropolar fluid along a permeable vertical plate under the convective boundary condition is analyzed. The scaling group of transformations is applied to get the similarity representation of the system of partial differential equations of the problem and then the resulting equations are solved by using Spectral Quasi-Linearisation Method. This study reveals that the dual solutions exists for certain values of mixed convection parameter. The outcomes are analyzed with dual solutions in detail. Effects of micropolar parameter, Biot number and suction/injection parameters on different flow profiles are discussed and depicted graphically.  相似文献

The effect of variable viscosity on laminar mixed convection flow and heat transfer along a semi-infinite unsteady stretching sheet taking into account the effect of viscous dissipation is studied. The flow of the fluid and subsequent heat transfer from the stretching surface is investigated with the aid of suitable transformation variables. Solutions for the velocity and temperature fields are obtained for some representative values of the unsteadiness parameter, variable viscosity parameter, mixed convection parameter and Eckert number. Typical velocity and temperature profiles, the local skin friction coefficient and the local heat transfer rate are presented at selected controlling parameters.  相似文献

An analytical study is performed on heat and mass transfer in MHD‐free convection from a moving permeable vertical surface and the results are compared with previous works on this phenomenon to test the validity. The coupled equations of boundary layer are transformed from their non‐linear form to ordinary form using similarity transformation and then are solved by a newly developed method, homotopy analysis method. Having different base functions, homotopy analysis method provides us with great freedom in choosing the solution of a nonlinear problem. Solving the boundry layer equations, the effects of different parameters such as magnetic field strength parameter (M), Prandtl number (Pr), Schmidt number (Sc), buoyancy ratio and suction/blowing parameter (fw) on velocity, temperature, and concentration profiles are taken into consideration. Obtained results show that increment of magnetic field strength parameter (M) leads to decrease in velocity profile. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article investigates the natural convection flow of viscous incompressible fluid in a channel formed by two infinite vertical parallel plates. Fully developed laminar flow is considered in a vertical channel with steady-periodic temperature regime on the boundaries. The effect of internal heating by viscous dissipation is taken into consideration. Separating the velocity and temperature fields into steady and periodic parts, the resulting second order ordinary differential equations are solved to obtain the expressions for velocity, and temperature. The amplitudes and phases of temperature and velocity are also obtained as well as the rate of heat transfer and the skin-friction on the plates. In presence of viscous dissipation, fluids of relatively small Prandtl number has higher temperature than the channel plates and as such, heat is being transferred from the fluid to the plate.  相似文献

Magneto-hydrodynamics and thermal radiation effects on heat and mass transfer in steady laminar boundary layer flow of a Newtonian, viscous fluid over a vertical flat plate embedded in a fluid saturated porous media in the presence of the thermophoresis particle deposition effect is studied in this paper. The governing equations are transformed by special transformations. Brownian motion of particles and thermophoretic transport are considered in the flow equations. The magnetic field is considered to be applied. Rosseland approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. The resulting similarity equations are solved numerically by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method with shooting technique. Many results are obtained and representative set is displayed graphically to illustrate the influence of the various parameters on the wall thermophoretic deposition velocity, concentration, temperature and velocity profiles.  相似文献

Non-similar solution of a steady mixed convection flow over a horizontal flat plate in the presence of surface mass transfer (suction or injection) is obtained when there is power-law variation in surface temperature. The surface temperature is assumed to vary as a power of the axial coordinate measured from the leading edge of the plate. A non-similar mixed convection parameter is considered which covers the whole convection regime, namely from pure free convection to pure forced convection. Numerical results are reported here to account the effects of Prandtl number, surface temperature, surface mass transfer parameter (suction or injection) on velocity and temperature profiles, and skin friction and heat transfer coefficients.  相似文献

The MHD Couette flow of a viscous stratified fluid of large electrical conductivity with suction and injection at the plane boundaries is studied when the plane boundaries are maintained at different temperatures. The Oseen type governing equations are formulated using the method suggested by Greenspan for stratified fluids. Introducing the similarity variables, the linearised equations are solved to obtain the velocity and temperature distributions. The results show that the behaviour of velocity and temperature in fluids of large conductivity is different from the behaviour of velocity and temperature for fluids of finite conductivity. The effect of the magnetic field on the load capacity is investigated for the case when the width of the channel is small.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the flow and heat and mass transfer characteristics of the free convection on a vertical plate with variable wall temperature and concentration in a doubly stratified micropolar fluid. A uniform magnetic field is applied normal to the plate. The governing non-linear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and then solved numerically using the Keller-box method. The numerical results are compared and found to be in good agreement with previously published results as special cases of the present investigation. The non-dimensional velocity, microrotation, temperature and concentration are presented graphically for various values of magnetic parameter, coupling number, thermal and solutal stratification parameters. In addition, the Nusselt number, the Sherwood number, the skin-friction coefficient, and the wall couple stress are shown in a tabular form.  相似文献

An analysis is performed for non-Darcy free convection flow of an electrically conducting fluid over an impermeable vertical plate embedded in a thermally stratified, fluid saturated porous medium for the case of power-law surface temperature. The present work examines the effects of non-Darcian flow phenomena, variable viscosity, Hartmann–Darcy number and thermal stratification on free convective transport and demonstrates the variation in heat transfer prediction based on three different flow models. The wall effect on porosity variation is approximated by an exponential function. The effects of thermal dispersion and variable stagnant thermal conductivity are taken into consideration in the energy equation. The resulting non-similar system of equations is solved using a finite difference method. Results are presented for velocity, temperature profiles and local Nusselt number for representative values of different controlling parameters.  相似文献

The steady two-dimensional oblique stagnation-point flow of an electrically conducting micropolar fluid in the presence of a uniform external electromagnetic field (E0H0) is analysed and some physical situations are examined. In particular, if E0 vanishes, H0 lies in the plane of the flow, with a direction not parallel to the boundary, and the induced magnetic field is neglected, it is proved that the oblique stagnation-point flow exists if, and only if, the external magnetic field is parallel to the dividing streamline. In all cases it is shown that the governing nonlinear partial differential equations admit similarity solutions and the resulting ordinary differential problems are solved numerically. Finally, the behaviour of the flow near the boundary is analysed; this depends on the three dimensionless material parameters, and also on the Hartmann number if H0 is parallel to the dividing streamline.  相似文献

In this paper, we apply Homotopy Perturbation Method (HPM) to find the analytical solutions of nonlinear MHD flow of an incompressible viscous fluid through convergent or divergent channels in presence of a high magnetic field. The flow of an incompressible electrically conducting viscous fluid in convergent or divergent channels under the influence of an externally applied homogeneous magnetic field is studied both analytically and numerically. The graphs are presented to reveal the physical characteristics of flow by changing angles of the channel, Hartmann and Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

The fully developed electrically conducting micropolar fluid flow and heat transfer along a semi-infinite vertical porous moving plate is studied including the effect of viscous heating and in the presence of a magnetic field applied transversely to the direction of the flow. The Darcy-Brinkman-Forchheimer model which includes the effects of boundary and inertia forces is employed. The differential equations governing the problem have been transformed by a similarity transformation into a system of non-dimensional differential equations which are solved numerically by element free Galerkin method. Profiles for velocity, microrotation and temperature are presented for a wide range of plate velocity, viscosity ratio, Darcy number, Forchhimer number, magnetic field parameter, heat absorption parameter and the micropolar parameter. The skin friction and Nusselt numbers at the plates are also shown graphically. The present problem has significant applications in chemical engineering, materials processing, solar porous wafer absorber systems and metallurgy.  相似文献
