We present Monte Carlo simulations of nonionic surfactant adsorption at the liquid/vapor interface of a monatomic solvent. All molecules in the system, solvent and surfactant, are characterized by the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential using differing interaction parameters. Surfactant molecules consist of an amphiphilic chain with a solvophilic head and a solvophobic tail. Adjacent atoms along the surfactant chain are connected by finitely extensible harmonic springs. Solvent molecules move via the Metropolis random-walk algorithm, whereas surfactant molecules move according to the continuum configurational bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) method. We generate quantitative thermodynamic adsorption and surface tension isotherms in addition to surfactant radius of gyration, tilt angles, and potentials of mean force. Surface tension simulations compared to those calculated from the simulated adsorbed amounts and the Gibbs adsorption isotherm agree confirming equilibrium in our simulations. We find that the classical Langmuir isotherm is obeyed for our LJ surfactants over the range of head and tail lengths studied. Although simulated surfactant chains in the bulk solution exhibit random orientations, surfactant chains at the interface orient roughly perpendicular and the tails elongate compared to bulk chains even in the submonolayer adsorption regime. At a critical surfactant concentration, designated as the critical aggregation concentration (CAC), we find aggregates in the solution away from the interface. At higher concentrations, simulated surface tensions remain practically constant. Using the simulated potential of mean force in the submonolayer regime and an estimate of the surfactant footprint at the CAC, we predict a priori the Langmuir adsorption constant, KL, and the maximum monolayer adsorption, Gammam. Adsorption is driven not by proclivity of the surfactant for the interface, but by the dislike of the surfactant tails for the solvent, that is by a "solvophobic" effect. Accordingly, we establish that a coarse-grained LJ surfactant system mimics well the expected equilibrium behavior of aqueous nonionic surfactants adsorbing at the air/water interface.  相似文献

The use of mixed surfactants for modification of solid surfaces is important for many applications, since beneficial synergism often occurs depending on the surfactant type and mixing conditions. Systematical information on the properties of surfactant mixtures at the solid/liquid interface can be helpful for optimizing the interactions between the surfactants and then their corresponding performance. In this work, a nonionic/anionic surfactant combination, n-dodecyl beta-d-maltoside (DM) and sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS), was selected for the study of adsorption on an oxide solid, alumina. Interestingly, the mixture of the two surfactants with opposite pH-dependence of adsorption on alumina exhibits some unique synergistic or antagonistic features that were found to be tunable in the region of pH 4-10. In addition, the DM/SDS molar ratio in the adsorbed layer was found to decrease with concentration in the saturated region at all the pH and mixing ratios tested. The decrease is attributed to the monomer concentration changes in solution due to the difference in surface activities of the two surfactants. The tunable features of this mixture at the solid/liquid interface provide a way to optimize the properties by changing the mixing conditions. This can be valuable in many applications, such as enhanced oil recovery, flotation, and solubilization.  相似文献

New Monte Carlo simulations are presented for nonionic surfactant adsorption at the liquid/vapor interface of a monatomic solvent specifically investigating the roles of tail attraction and binary mixtures of different tail lengths. Surfactant molecules consist of an amphiphilic chain with a solvophilic head and a solvophobic tail. All molecules in the system, solvent and surfactant, are characterized by the Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential. Adjacent atoms along the surfactant chain are connected by finitely extensible harmonic springs. Solvent molecules move via the Metropolis random-walk algorithm, whereas surfactant molecules move according to the continuum configurational bias Monte Carlo (CBMC) method. We generate thermodynamic adsorption and surface-tension isotherms and compare results quantitatively to single-surfactant adsorption (Langmuir, 2007, 23, 1835). Surfactant tail groups with attractive interaction lead to cooperative adsorption at high surface coverage and higher maximum adsorption at the interface than those without. Moreover, adsorption and surface-tension isotherms with and without tail attraction are identical at low concentrations, deviating only near maximum coverage. Simulated binary mixtures of surfactants with differing lengths give intermediate behavior between that of the corresponding single-surfactant adsorption and surface-tension isotherms both with and without tail attraction. We successfully predict simulated mixture results with the thermodynamically consistent ideal adsorbed solution (IAS) theory for binary mixtures of unequal-sized surfactants using only the simulations from the single surfactants. Ultimately, we establish that a coarse-grained LJ surfactant system is useful for understanding actual surfactant systems when tail attraction is important and for unequal-sized mixtures of amphiphiles.  相似文献

A novel route for the self-assembly of nanoparticles to nanospheres at a liquid/liquid interface has been developed to prepare palladium nanospheres. It has proved that the interface offers an excellent site and plays a key role in the self-assembly of nanoparticles to nanospheres. The palladium nanospheres are characterized by electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The mechanism of the self-assembly process is also proposed.  相似文献

The structure of micelles formed by nonionic polyoxyethylene alkyl ether nonionic surfactants, C n E m , in the room-temperature ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN), has been determined by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) as a function of alkyl and ethoxy chain length, concentration, and temperature. Micelles are found to form for all alkyl chains from dodecyl through to octadecyl. Dodecyl-chained surfactants have high critical micelle concentrations, around 1 wt%, and form weakly structured micelles. Surfactants with longer alkyl chains readily form micelles in EAN. The observed micelle structure changes systematically with alkyl and ethoxy chain length, in parallel with observations in aqueous solutions. Decreasing ethoxy chain length at constant alkyl chain length leads to a sphere to rod transition. These micelles also grow into rods with increasing temperature as their cloud point is approached in EAN.  相似文献

The liquid/solid interface provides an ideal environment to investigate self-assembly phenomena, and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is the preferred methodology to probe the structure and the properties of physisorbed monolayers on the nanoscale. Physisorbed monolayers are of relevance in areas such as lubrication, patterning of surfaces on the nanoscale, and thin film based organic electronic devices, to name a few. It's important to gain insight in the factors which control the ordering of molecules at the liquid/solid interface in view of the targeted properties. STM provides detailed insight into the importance of molecule-substrate (epitaxy) and molecule-molecule interactions (hydrogen bonding, metal complexation, and fluorophobic/fluorophilic interactions) to direct the ordering of both achiral and chiral molecules on the atomically flat surface. By controlling the location and orientation of functional groups, chemical reactions can be induced at the liquid/solid interface, via external stimuli, such as light, or by controlled manipulation with the STM tip. The electronic properties of the self-assembled physisorbed molecules can be probed by taking advantage of the operation principle of STM, revealing spatially resolved intramolecular differences within these physisorbed molecules.  相似文献

The influence of ionic surfactants, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB),self-assembled within silica-nanochannels of a hybrid mesoporous silica membrane(HMSM) on simple ion transfer(IT)behaviors at the meso-water/1,2-dichloroethane(W/DCE) interface arrays supported by such a HMSM was investigated by voltammetry for the first time.Significantly,it is found that the CTAB in HMSM can dramatically enhance the peak-current responses corresponding to ITs of some anions and even lower their Gibbs transfer energies from W to DCE,which could be ascribed to an anion-exchange process between anions and the bromide of CTAB associated with partial ion-dehydration induced by the CTAB.This work will provide a new strategy to study anion transfer processes and improve the electroanalytical performance for anion detection at the liquid/liquid interface.  相似文献

The stability of a variety of lyotropic liquid crystals formed by a number of polyoxyethylene nonionic surfactants in the room-temperature ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) is surveyed and reported. The pattern of self-assembly behaviour and mesophase formation is strikingly similar to that observed in water, even including the existence of a lower consolute boundary or cloud point. The only quantitative difference from water is that longer alkyl chains are necessary to drive the formation of liquid crystalline mesophases in EAN, suggesting that a rich pattern of "solvophobic" self-assembly should exist in this solvent.  相似文献

In the presented study we have developed and implemented a methodology for ellipsometry measurements at liquid interfaces that makes it possible to determine the amount adsorbed without assumptions of refractive index or thickness of the adsorbed layer. It was demonstrated that this is possible by combined measurements from different aqueous phases, H(2)O and D(2)O, which were shown to have sufficiently different refractive indices. The methodology was tested by studying adsorption of two types of nonionic poly(ethylene glycol) alkyl ether surfactants, C(n)H(2)(n)(+1)(OC(2)H(4))(m)OH or C(n)E(m) at the decane--aqueous interface, where C(12)E(5) was adsorbed from the oil phase and C(18)E(50) from the aqueous phase. The observed plateau values of the adsorbed amounts were 1.38 and 0.93 mg/m(2) for C(12)E(5) and C(18)E(50), respectively, which is in agreement with the corresponding values of 1.49 and 1.15 mg/m(2) obtained from applying the Gibbs equation to interfacial tension data for the same systems. We will briefly discuss the adsorption behavior in relation to the molecular structure of the surfactant and the phase behavior of the oil--surfactant--aqueous systems in relation to our experimental results.  相似文献

The adsorption of the mixed nonionic surfactants, monododecyl triethylene glycol (C2EO3) and monododecyl octaethylene glycol (C12EO8), at the hydrophilic silica-solution interface has been studied by specular neutron reflectivity. The adsorption at the solid-solution interface is compared with that previously measured at the air-solution interface. The marked differences that are observed are explained in terms of the different packing constraints or preferred curvature arising from the disparity in the respective headgroup dimensions.  相似文献

Thermodynamic studies of mixed ionic/nonionic surfactant systems   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Mixtures of alkyltrimethylammonium bromide (CnTAB, n=12, 14, 16, 18) and Triton X-100 were studied at a range of mole fractions of ionic surfactant per nonionic surfactant. For each mixture, the cmc obtained from surface tension measurements differed from that obtained using potentiometry. The behavior of these mixed-surfactant systems showed three different regions with increasing total surfactant concentration. From the surface tension and potentiometry data, we obtained the free monomer concentration of ionic surfactant (mi), the micellar mole fraction of surfactant (xi), and the degree of dissociation (alpha) of ionic surfactant. We also obtained the free monomer concentration of Triton X-100 (m2) using PFG-NMR technique. A new equation was introduced to evaluate the activity coefficient in the micellar phase. The excess free energy (GE) and the synergetic parameters of mixtures were determined at various mole fractions of CnTAB/Triton X-100. Finally, the complexity of the synergism parameters was investigated.  相似文献

The OH stretching region of water molecules in the vicinity of nonionic surfactant monolayers has been investigated using vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS) under the polarization combinations ssp, ppp, and sps. The surface sensitivity of the VSFS technique has allowed targeting the few water molecules present at the surface with a net orientation and, in particular, the hydration shell around alcohol, sugar, and poly(ethylene oxide) headgroups. Dramatic differences in the hydration shell of the uncharged headgroups were observed, both in comparison to each another and in comparison to the pure water surface. The water molecules around the rigid glucoside and maltoside sugar rings were found to form strong hydrogen bonds, similar to those observed in tetrahedrally coordinated water in ice. In the case of the poly(ethylene oxide) surfactant monolayer a significant ordering of both strongly and weakly hydrogen bonded water was observed. Moreover, a band common to all the surfactants studied, clearly detected at relatively high frequencies in the polarization combinations ppp and sps, was assigned to water species located in proximity to the surfactant hydrocarbon tail phase, with both hydrogen atoms free from hydrogen bonds. An orientational analysis provided additional information on the water species responsible for this band.  相似文献

A system of equations for calculating the characteristics of an electrical double layer formed in ionic surfactant solution containing a background electrolyte at its boundary with air is derived according to the Gouy-Chapman-Stern theory. Procedures for its solution are considered with allowance for experimental information on the surface tension and electrosurface properties of these systems.  相似文献

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), incoherent elastic neutron scattering, and neutron diffraction are used to demonstrate the presence of adsorbed solid multilayers of linear alcohols at the graphite-liquid alcohol interface. All alcohols studied (C(5)-C(18)) are found to form at least one monolayer. In addition all the even alcohols investigated (C(6)OH to C(18)OH) show multilayer formation. However, only the short odd alcohols (C(5)OH to C(11)OH) clearly exhibit additional features indicating multilayer formation.  相似文献

A nonionic surfactant, n-dodecyl glyceryl itaconate (DGI), self-assembles into bilayer membranes in water having a spacing distance of sub-micrometer in the presence of small amounts of ionic surfactants, and shows beautiful iridescent color. Ionic surfactants have strong effects on this iridescent system. We have interestingly found that the iridescent color changes with time after mixing DGI and ionic surfactants and the color in equilibrium state changes greatly with concentration of the ionic surfactants. The time-dependent color change results from the transformation of DGI aggregate structure after being mixed with ionic surfactant. It is first found that the iridescent color of this nonionic system can be changed from red to deep blue by altering the concentration of ionic surfactants added even though the total concentration of surfactant is almost constant. Such large blue shift of the iridescent color in equilibrium state cannot be fully explained by the ordinary undulation theory applied so far for this phenomenon. The flat lamellar sheets tend to curve by increasing the concentration of ionic surfactants to form separated onion-like and/or myelin-like structures. These separated structures of lamellar system result in the decrease of spacing distance between bilayer membranes because some vacant spaces necessarily appear among these structures.  相似文献

The formation of half-cylindrical surfactant aggregates at the graphite/aqueous solution interface is templated by an ordered monolayer of molecules disposed parallel to the graphite basal plane. Beyond a critical alkyl chain length, monolayer formation is effectively irreversible. Since enthalpic interactions in this template-monolayer region cannot be resolved with adequate accuracy by the traditional adsorption calorimetric methods, we applied a novel method, pulsed-flow calorimetry, for simultaneous measurement of the material balance and the enthalpy balance in this high-affinity region. For the three nonionic surfactants studied, n-octyl beta-D-glucoside (C(8)G(1)), dimethyl-n-decylamine oxide (C(10)DAO), and n-octyl tetraethylene glycol monoether (C(8)E(4)), the adsorption was found to be strongly exothermic and effectively irreversible at low adsorbate densities, and the differential heat of adsorption markedly decreased with increasing surface coverage in this region. This deviation from the ideal adsorption behavior was attributed to intermolecular interactions within the adsorption layer rather than to surface heterogeneity of the graphite basal planes. A thermodynamic consistency test clearly demonstrated that pulsed-flow calorimetry is a unique experimental method for the study of nonreversible adsorption phenomena at solid/solution interfaces, representing an excellent tool to complement traditional methods, e.g., frontal-flow and titration adsorption calorimetry. Studies by the frontal-flow method revealed that aggregation on top of the surfactant monolayer was endothermic and reversible.  相似文献

This paper describes a dynamic system-a system that develops order only when dissipating energy-comprising millimeter to centimeter scale gears that self-assemble into a simple machine at a fluid/air interface. The gears are driven externally and indirectly by magnetic interactions; they are made of poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) or magnetically doped PDMS, and fabricated by soft lithography. Transfer of torque between gears can take place through three different mechanisms: mechanical interaction, hydrodynamic shear, and capillarity/overlap of menisci. Interplay between these forces allows interactions and motions that are not possible with conventional systems of gears.  相似文献

Control of the morphology of gold nanoparticles has received considerable attention because the physical and chemical properties of gold depend significantly on its size and shape. A novel route for obtaining 2-D gold nanostructures has been developed in which chloroaurate ions (AuCl (4)(-)) are reduced at the 2-D interface between water and chloroform using an amphiphilic polyoxometallate (SiW (12)O (40)(4-))/surfactant (dimethyldioctadecylammonium; DODA) hybrid photocatalyst under UV irradiation at room temperature in air. This simple method can readily produce large single-crystalline gold nanosheets (lateral size, ca. 20 microm; thickness, ca. 150 nm).  相似文献

This paper describes how the cationic polyelectrolyte, polyDMDAAC (poly(dimethyl diallylammonium chloride)), is used to manipulate the adsorption of the anionic surfactant SDS and the mixed ionic/nonionic surfactant mixture of SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate)/C(12)E(6) (monododecyl hexaethylene glycol) onto the surface of hydrophilic silica. The deposition of a thin robust polymer layer from a dilute polymer/surfactant solution promotes SDS adsorption and substantially modifies the adsorption of SDS/C(12)E(6) mixtures in favor of a surface relatively rich in SDS compared to the solution composition. Different deposition conditions for the polyDMDAAC layer are discussed. In particular, at higher solution polymer concentrations and in the presence of 1 M NaCl, a thicker polymer layer is deposited and the reversibility of the surfactant adsorption is significantly altered.  相似文献
