Amino sulfonamide catalyst : A distal proton of the axially chiral amino sulfonamide (S)‐ 1 realized the opposite diastereoselectivity in Mannich and cross‐aldol reactions compared with that observed in proline‐catalyzed reactions. The reactions catalyzed by (S)‐ 1 proceeded smoothly to give the anti‐Mannich and syn‐aldol adducts in excellent enantioselectivity (see scheme).
The combination of imidazolium surfactants with α‐cyclodextrins (CDs, in green) was used as a control element in the thermoregulated aqueous olefin hydroformylation. The self‐assembly of the imidazolium surfactants (red) favors the micellization process at high temperatures, whereas at lower temperatures the complexation of the surfactant monomers into the α‐CDs is favored.

An amphiphilic polystyrene‐poly(ethylene glycol) resin‐dispersion of nanoparticles of platinum (ARP‐Pt) is developed, with the nanoparticles exhibiting a narrow size distribution throughout the resin. ARP‐Pt offers a sustainable chemistry alternative as a useful and readily recyclable catalyst for the aerobic oxidation of a wide variety of alcohols.
Bringing order : A new class of periodic mesoporous organosilicas (PMOs) with a urea‐bridged organosilica precursor under acid‐catalyzed and inorganic‐salt‐assisted conditions was obtained. The large‐pore hybrid materials have ordered mesostructure with uniform pore size distributions, which can be seen from the TEM images.
Nanocrystalline TiO 2 (anatase) is an essential oxide for environment and energy applications. A combination of EXAFS spectroscopy and DFT calculations on a series of dopants with quite similar ion radius, but increasing ion charge, show boundary space charge segregation of acceptor cations. The picture illustrates the Fourier‐transformed EXAFS spectrum for Sn4+‐doped TiO2.
Once difficult to obtain , the title compounds can be prepared in virtually enantiomerically pure form with a bis(triorganostannyl) zinc reagent (see scheme). Subsequent diastereoselective thermal (left) and Lewis acid promoted reactions (right) illustrate the synthetic potential of these compounds.
Modified porphyrins : New, mild conditions are described for the conversion of free‐base octaethylporphyrin (OEP) into the corresponding monooxypyriporphyrin. The same conditions can be used to convert the monooxypyriporphyrin into the unprecedented bis(oxypyri)porphyrin (see figure).
Photoactive polymer blends: Films consisting of two photoactive homopolymers, MEH‐PPV and P3HT, are prepared via spin coating. Investigation of the lateral domain distance inside the blended film, performed by using grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering techniques, shows that the theoretically predicted blending ratio seems most promising (see figure).
Reversible and non‐bonding interaction between SWNTs and ODCB is observed from the analyses of visible near‐infrared absorption data and Raman spectroscopies (see spectra). The solvent effect on SWNTs effectively controls the electronic structure of SWNTs under homogeneous conditions.
