Don't cry! The attachment of ferrocene moieties on the surface of carbon nano‐onions influences the electrochemical properties of these moieties and the photophysical properties of the carbon nano‐onions (see figure). Quantum chemical calculations confirm that the spectral properties of carbon nano‐onions depend on their size and the degree of functionalisation.
No hurdle is too high : The regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the halohydroxylation of non‐activated allenes are controlled by a remote sulfinyl group through anchimeric assistance (see scheme). The resulting halohydrines are excellent chiral targets for the preparation of optically pure propargylic alcohols and Baylis–Hillman‐type products.
2009: A boraanthracene odyssey : General routes to boraanthracene derivatives—long proposed, but never observed—are disclosed, along with the structural and photophysical properties of these compounds and their remarkable reactivity towards oxygen.
Economical approach : The first organocatalytic asymmetric intramolecular hydroarylation of phenol‐ and aniline‐derived enals offers one of the most straightforward and atom‐economic approaches to enantioriched chromans and tetrahydroquinolines (up to 96 % ee; see scheme).
Wheels of steel : Two enantiomerically pure chiral {Fe28} wheel‐like aggregates have been synthesized from the acetate buffer solution containing ferric ions and chiral tartrate ligands (see picture). These compounds are the largest chiral ferric aggregates isolated to date.
Lighting up new platinum anticancer complexes : Photoactivation of a platinum(IV) diazido anticancer complex in the presence of a derivative of imidazole, an important constituent of biomolecules, gives surprising photoproducts, including a tetrakis imidazole platinum(II) adduct (see figure), together with free azide, dioxygen and ammonia.
A black whole : The black insoluble biopolymer eumelanin is prepared through the oxidative polymerization of 5,6‐dihydroxyindoles (see scheme). It has a largely unknown heterogeneous structure and unique optoelectronic properties. Current structural models are presented and possible applications are discussed.
Supramolecular chirality and liquid crystalline OFET : Achiral end‐capped oligothiophenes can be tuned to exhibit supramolecular chirality with unique striped textures showing distinct circular dichroism signals as well as a highly ordered SmE phase that leads to high hole carrier mobility.
Charge matters! The charge state significantly influences the conformation and the binding energy between vancomycin antibiotic and bacterial cell‐wall analogue peptides (see figure). Surface‐induced dissociation (SID) studies provide a quantitative comparison between the stabilities of different charge states of the complex.
