A very generous donor : The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) efficiency and radical stability of pyrene, a poor ECL luminophore, are markedly improved as the number of peripheral multidonor units increased in a series of compounds (see picture). Photophysical and electrochemical studies and theoretical calculations have contributed to the understanding of the ECL enhancement, which is a step forward in the development of new light‐emitting materials.

Probing the basicity of the catalysts is crucial to understand the base‐catalysed processes and to optimise the catalyst preparation. Particle vs tube : The present paper systematically investigates a range of fundamental geometrical and structural features of TiO2 nanotube layers and their effect on the dye‐sensitized solar cell conversion efficiency, to deduce the most promising strategies for improvement. It is found that the performance of the cells strongly depends on the morphology and crystalline structure of the nanotubes.

Back from obscurity : The practical synthesis of the first six members of the fundamental class of acyclic branched oligoalkenes has been achieved. The syntheses allow access to the target compounds on multigram scales in good yields. Members of the family with even numbers of double bonds are significantly more stable than those with odd numbers (see picture), and exhibit different chemical reactivities in Diels–Alder reactions.

Quick on the uptake : A multiscale theoretical method predicts that the gravimetric adsorption capacities of H2 in Li‐doped covalent organic frameworks based on the building blocks shown (Li violet, H white, B pink, C green, O red, Si yellow) can reach nearly 7 % at T=298 K and p=100 bar, suggesting that these Li‐doped materials are promising adsorbents for hydrogen storage.

Photoactive polymer blends: Films consisting of two photoactive homopolymers, MEH‐PPV and P3HT, are prepared via spin coating. Investigation of the lateral domain distance inside the blended film, performed by using grazing incidence small angle X‐ray scattering techniques, shows that the theoretically predicted blending ratio seems most promising (see figure).
