A window of opportunity : A general copper‐catalyzed C? H bond‐activation path allows arylation of heterocycles with a wide range of aryl bromides (see scheme). The reaction shows excellent regioselectivity and exhibits good functional group tolerance. The 8‐aryl xanthines exhibit fluorescence in a variety of solvents and show promise as reagents for biological imaging.

Electron by electron : β‐Diketiminato nickel(I) complex fragments are capable of activating N2 through coordination. The resulting complex can be reduced in two single‐electron steps, which further activates the N? N bond. The picture shows the structure of the singly reduced complex with μ‐η11‐bound N2.

On edge : Self‐assembled monolayers of a bis(hydrazone)‐based molecular grid physisorbed on graphite are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (see picture). High order is attained at the supramolecular level by thermal annealing of the grid‐based films. A preferential edge‐on configuration of the molecular grid with respect to the substrate is found.

(?)‐Dysibetaine has been synthesized in 11 steps from readily available L ‐malic acid (see scheme). The key step is a unique Ugi 4‐center‐3‐component cyclization reaction, where an ester group acts as the carboxylic acid component. The use of 1,1,1,3,3,3‐hexamethyldisilazane as an ammonia equivalent and a specially designed isocyanide leads to an expeditious synthesis.

Ordered water : Gypsum has been used for construction for millennia. The structure and water content of calcined gypsum, CaSO4?0.5 H2O, has been under discussion until now: single‐crystal structure analysis (see picture: S yellow, Ca gray, O blue, H red) provides an ordered model that is confirmed by DFT calculations.

The functionalization of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles by poly(3‐hexylthiophene) (P3HT) brush is completed by the combination of a mussel inspired biomimetic anchoring group and Huisgen cyclo‐addition “click chemistry.” Herein, the direct coupling of an azide modified catechol derivative with an alkyne end‐functionalized P3HT is described. This macromolecular binding agent is used to access core@corona ZnO@P3HT with a stable and homogeneous conjugated organic corona. Preliminary photoluminescence measurement proves an efficient electron transfer from the donor P3HT to the acceptor ZnO nanoparticles upon grafting, thus demonstrating the potential of such a combination in organic electronics.

A new route to synthesize amphiphilic core–shell particles that consist of well‐defined hydrophobic polymer cores and poly(vinylamine) (PVAm) shells has been developed. The PVAm was treated with a small amount of tert‐butyl hydroperoxide to generate free radicals that subsequently initiated both graft‐ and homo‐polymerization of vinyl monomer such as n‐butyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate, and styrene. Stable particles in the range from 100 to 250 nm in diameter with very narrow size distributions (polydispersity index between 1.08 and 1.15) were produced in high yields. TEM images of the particles revealed that they had well‐defined core–shell nanostructures with thick and hairy PVAm shells. The structures of the vinyl monomer and water‐soluble polymer were found to strongly influence the formation of particles and their sizes.

Die Einführung dieser Substituenten an spezifischen Positionen zweier Faktor‐Xa‐Inhibitoren erhöht deren freie Bindungsenergie durch die Wechselwirkung mit einer Tyrosineinheit. Das allgemeine Vorkommen dieses Strukturmotivs wird anhand zahlreicher Kristallstukturen und quantenchemischer Rechnungen belegt (siehe Bild).

The fungus Rhizopus microsporus …? ; shown in the micrograph on the cover picture, harbors the endosymbiotic bacteria Burkholderia rhizoxinica that produces the antimitotic polyketide macrolide rhizoxin (see structure). In their Communication on page 5001 ff. , C. Hertweck and co‐workers show that the enzyme rhizoxin polyketide synthase is uniquely capable of introducing a β branch (highlighted by the magnifying glass) by a Michael‐type addition of a malonyl unit to an acryloyl intermediate.

Simple addition : Copper(II) aqua complex 1 can be prepared in a one‐pot synthesis and is self‐assembled by H‐bond interactions. Complex 1 is shown to accelerate the nitroaldol reaction on water, which is a heterogeneous process, requiring no additive or base, and 1 can be recycled without loss of activity.

Searching for “intelligence” : Azurin–PNIPAM conjugates were prepared by site‐directed mutagenesis followed by protein reconstitution by using imidazole‐conjugated poly(N‐isopropylacrylamides). The polymer‐bound imidazole acts as a ligand in the active site of the blue copper protein azurin. The bioconjugates showed thermosensitive behavior in electron‐transfer processes with reduced cytochrome c.

Playing the sax : The enantioselective total syntheses of (?)‐ and (+)‐decarbamoyloxysaxitoxin (doSTX) and (+)‐saxitoxin (STX) are reported. A new methodology was developed for the synthesis of STXs, featuring discriminative reduction of the nitro group and N? O bond in nitroisoxazolidine.

Thin is in! Recent advance in solution‐phase synthesis has led to the formation of ultrathin single‐crystalline Au nanowires with diameters of less than 10 nm. This Focus Review summarizes these syntheses and provides an exciting example of the electron transport in the ultrathin Au nanowires to demonstrate their great potential for nanoelectronic applications.
