Multivalent binding is a key for many critical biological processes and unique recognition and specificity in binding enables many of different glycans and proteins to work in a great harmony within the human body. In this study, the binding kinetics of synthetic glycopolypeptides to the dendritic cell lectin DC‐SIGN and their inhibition potential for DC‐SIGN interactions with the gp120 envelope glycoprotein of HIV‐1 (gp120) are investigated.

A variety of tertiary silanes , even those with functional substituents, undergo an unprecedented iron‐catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling (see scheme) in a convenient approach to disilanes, including unsymmetrical disilanes and polymers with Si? Si bonds in the backbone. Consideration of the catalytic reaction pathway revealed the intermediacy of a hydrido(disilyl)iron(IV) complex.
A good model? Noble‐metal particulate catalysts often require small amounts of oxygen to obtain optimal activity. However, the structure and stoichiometry of the oxidized metal clusters involved remains obscure, even almost two hundred years after their discovery. A heteropolypalladate salt (see picture; Pd yellow, O red) now offers a view of how oxygen might be incorporated into small noble‐metal clusters.

Standing room only : Dense polymer brushes can be prepared by adsorbing a diblock copolymer comprising a neutral block and a polyelectrolyte block to an oppositely charged polyelectrolyte brush (see picture). The density of the resulting neutral brush is determined by charge compensation, leading to brush densities well over 1 nm?2. The diblock copolymer can be desorbed by changing the solution conditions.
Forces to reckon with : Supramolecular complexes, such as the one shown, are normally based on a combination of different interactions such as ion pairing, hydrogen bonds, and stacking interactions. The not always simple characterization of the nature and strength of intermolecular forces provides assistance to the understanding of biomimetic systems, as well as for the design of synthetic receptors, drugs, and intelligent materials.
Quality control : The incorporation of a wrong amino acid into a growing polypeptide chain induces a correction step in which the release factor (RF1) hydrolyzes the peptide from the incorrectly matched peptidyl‐tRNA (see picture). The nascent erroneous polypeptide is released from the ribosome and degraded.

Alkynes of reactions : Recent breakthroughs in metal‐catalyzed alkyne reactions, which expand the synthetic utility of alkynes, have been achieved. These approaches broaden the range of alkynes that are accessible by C? N and C? C bond‐forming reactions and demonstrate that the use of bifunctional heterobimetallic catalysts can lead to new reactivity and excellent enantioselectivity (see scheme).
Ringing the changes : The total synthesis of the title compound centers around a novel strategy that employs a nickel(0)–phosphine complex and triethyl borane in an efficient closure of a 14‐membered ring through C? C bond formation (see scheme; cod=cyclooctadiene). The synthesis was accomplished in 10 steps and in approximately 9 % overall yield.
