Tough and soft : Highly porous, spongelike materials self‐assemble by calcium ion condensation of DNA‐wrapped carbon nanotubes (SWNTs–DNA; see picture, IL=ionic liquid). The toughness, modulus, and swellability of the electrically conductive sponges can be tuned by controlling the density and strength of interfiber junctions. The sponges have compliances similar to the softest natural tissue, while robust interfiber junctions give high toughness.

Taking the reins : The title transformation of thioamides and N‐diphenylphosphinoyl imines is described. By harnessing the power of cooperative catalysis between a soft Lewis acid and a hard Brønsted base, thioamide carbon pronucleophiles can furnish Mannich products (see scheme). Divergent transformation of the thioamide functionality highlights the utility of this methodology.

Involuntary association : Anionic β‐galactosidase enzymes associate with positively charged Au nanoparticles to produce reduced‐charge conjugates, which assemble at oil–water interfaces to result in stable microcapsules (see picture). The microcapsules were formed quickly and showed high enzymatic activity, which makes them promising materials for biotechnology applications.

Kept in the dark : The non‐photocatalytic generation of free radicals from fine and ultrafine TiO2 particles has been studied by means of a spin‐trapping/ESR spectroscopy technique (see figure). The amount and kind of free radicals generated depends on the crystalline structure, but not on the particle dimensions.

Empty glass : Subjecting ethylene glycol silica sodalite to heat (680 °C) under a nitrogen atmosphere (i) successfully removes the templating agent to give cubic silica sodalite, which, upon consequent heating under an oxygen atmosphere (ii), transforms into a rhombohedral form of the empty sodalite, in effect a novel polymorph of silica.

Phosphine‐assisted C? H activation of the methyl group of 2‐methylimidazolium compounds led to a series of iridium, rhodium, and palladium complexes of 2‐methyleneimidazolines. Experimental results confirmed that the product of methyl C? H activation is the kinetic product, whereas the aryl C? H activation product is the thermodynamic product (see scheme).

Building bridges : The title compound forms an unprecedented polymeric structure with bridging B–H–B three‐center two‐electron bonds in the solid state. This organoborane serves as an efficient precursor for the preparation of boron‐doped π‐conjugated polymers by hydroboration polymerization with a functionalized 1,4‐diethynylbenzene (see picture). These polymers form thin films that show intense green luminescence.
