Microdoughnuts: Polymer toroidal particles such as the one shown in the left picture have been prepared by a capillary microfluidic technique. Droplets of polymer solution undergo non‐uniform solidification to form the anisotropic polymer particles. By incorporating functional materials inside the polymer network, functional toroidal particles (center and right images) can be tailor‐made for specific applications such as magnetic actuation.

Oil and water : A new energy‐efficient and atom‐economical catalytic route for the production of alkanes and methanol by upgrading the phenolic fraction of bio‐oil has been developed. The one‐pot aqueous‐phase hydrodeoxygenation process is based on two catalysts facilitating consecutive hydrogenation, hydrolysis, and dehydration reactions.

Solid‐state route to a cyclobutenone : Ruthenium perchlorocyclobutenonyl complex 2 is obtained by solid‐state photoisomerization of ruthenium trichloroacetyl acetylide complex 1 . The four‐membered ring is sufficiently robust that transfer of the intact ligand could be readily achieved in a reaction of 2 with an enyne. Cyclobutenedionyl complex 3 was obtained by hydrolysis of 2 in H2O/THF.

NHC with EWGs for RCM : Ruthenium complexes with two N‐heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), one of them substituted with electron‐withdrawing groups (EWGs), are highly efficient (pre)catalysts for the synthesis of tetrasubstituted olefins and trisubstituted olefins by ring‐closing metathesis reactions (RCM, see scheme).

Highly active, selective, and stable : Highly ordered mesoporous carbon without deposition of metal particles catalyzes the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethyl benzene to styrene. A high activity and selectivity as well as long catalytic stability when compared with activated carbon, is observed from this catalyst.

Building a better library : The synthesis of a library of natural‐product‐like small molecules with unprecedented scaffold diversity has been reported (see scheme; Ns=nosylate).
