π–π assisted : Photoinduced electron transfer from cofacial porphyrin dimers to electron acceptors is prominently accelerated, whereas the back electron transfer is decelerated, relative to the corresponding porphyrin monomer (see figure).
A practical and sustainable chemical process for the synthesis of highly substituted aldol?lactol products was achieved for the first time through the asymmetric Barbas–List aldol (BLA) reaction of 2‐hydroxybenzaldehydes with acetone in the presence of a catalytic amount of trans‐4‐OH‐L ‐proline (see scheme).
A drug of two halves : New artificial compounds composed of a macrosphelide core skeleton and an epothilone side chain were designed and synthesized. These compounds were more potent inducers of apoptosis than the parent natural‐type macrosphelides.
Clicking iron : Cheap and environmentally friendly [Fe(OAc)2] is used for the catalysis of cycloadditions between aryl nitriles and trimethylsilyl azide to prepare substituted 1H‐tetrazoles in good yield (see scheme).
Double or nothing : The title reaction converts a range of aromatic aldehydes and allenylmethyl/allyl silanes into 1,6‐dioxecane derivatives in good to excellent yields (see scheme; Ar=aryl, Tf=triflate, THF=tetrahydrofuran, TMS=trimethylsilyl). In addition, the bisdiene product has been transformed into the corresponding tricyclic compound through a Diels–Alder reaction.
A new pick‐up line : The first uranyl‐selective DNA‐binding protein is designed using the E. coli nickel(II)‐responsive protein NikR as the template. The resulting NikR′ protein binds uranyl (see picture) with a dissociation constant Kd=53 nM and selectively binds to DNA in the presence of uranyl.
Squashy cage : A flexible, spongelike, and reversible metal‐binding Cu2L2 cage that can adjust its internal space in response to pyrazine and its derivatives based on a recognition sequence of pyrazine, 2,5‐dimethylpyrazine, and 2‐methylpyrazine (see figure) is described.
From imines to amines through catalysis by IrI complexes of a new type of P,N ligand (see scheme): This reaction affords the corresponding optically active amines with up to 98 % ee and has also been used with perfect stereoselectivity in the asymmetric synthesis of sertraline ( 1 ), an important antidepressant chiral drug.
Direct visualization of photoinduced tunneling charge transfer (TCT) in an Au5/para‐aminothiophenol (PATP)/Ag6 junction in which Au and Ag clusters form the first and second layer, respectively, is provided by the charge difference density (see picture; green and red stand for holes and electrons, respectively).
Once around the block : Incorporation of a rigid hydrogen‐bonding benzamide unit, placed at the interface between two polymer blocks, in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–(thio)urea–poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) block copolymers transforms the morphology of the block copolymers, from spherical micelles, as formed by PEG‐PLLA diblock copolymers, into nanotubes in solution.
Bright lights : Fullerene–silica hybrid nanoparticles have bright photoluminescence, high photostability, and low cytotoxicity, which are assets for bioimaging agents. The origin of the photoluminescence of the nanoparticle is the C–O–Si bond (see picture).
