Borenes and boranes : Silylaminoiminoborenes, such as depicted, were isolated after treatment of halogen triels with silylaminofluoroboranes. In addition, novel aryl‐ and silyl‐substituted diaminofluoroboranes were also prepared in order to substantiate this reaction route.

Supramolecular chirality and liquid crystalline OFET : Achiral end‐capped oligothiophenes can be tuned to exhibit supramolecular chirality with unique striped textures showing distinct circular dichroism signals as well as a highly ordered SmE phase that leads to high hole carrier mobility.

SERS you right: The plasmon heating of gold nanoshells is exploited to yield the local conversion of amorphous TiO2 into anatase on the surface of polymeric colloidal crystals (see scheme). The resulting Au/TiO2 spots are active substrates for surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy and allow surface reactions and processes to be followed directly on‐site.

Size is not all! Investigation of the controlled release of tertiary alcohols from the surface of dendrimers and “stylomers” as polymer model systems (see scheme) showed that the polarity of the conjugates and structural modifications in close proximity to the release unit have a stronger influence on the rates of hydrolysis than the size (generation) or shape (linear or spherical) of the macromolecules.

Losing the grip : The synthesis of multivalent low‐molecular‐weight dendrons with lysine branching units coupled to disulfide‐linked spermine surface groups is described. It is furthermore demonstrated that the dendrons bind DNA with good affinity (see image), but are also able to release the DNA in a reductive environment.

Deep‐water scrolls: It is demonstrated that amphiphilic rods containing lateral flexible chains self‐assemble into two‐dimensional sheets in aqueous solution (see picture). Remarkably, the sheets roll up reversibly into tubular scrolls upon heating, as confirmed by cryo‐transmission electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy.

The light fantastic : Two new 2‐(benzo[b]thiophene‐3‐yl)pyrroles have been synthesized, and are shown to exhibit optical properties that are promising for optoelectronic materials and devices such as highly efficient fluorescent sensors (see scheme). In addition a new BODIPY fluorophore, derived from 2‐(benzo[b]thiophene‐3‐yl)pyrrole, was also isolated and shows good spectroscopic properties in solution which are fully preserved in the solid state.

PS, I love you! Novel mixed phosphole/thiophene π‐conjugated systems were synthesized and their electronic properties have been studied both experimentally by UV/Vis spectroscopy and electrochemistry and by theoretical calculations. Exploiting the chemistry of both P‐ and S‐heteroles allows the generation of a diverse range of novel ring‐fused benzophosphole–thiophene derivatives.

You can append on me! Porphyrin‐appended polynorbornenes derived from 5,6‐endo‐fused N‐arylpyrrolidenonorbornenes have been shown to have coherently aligned pendant groups that exhibit exciton coupling and fluorescence quenching in the absorption and emission profiles (see figure).

Pincer carbene complexes : Comparison of the electronic structures of “pincer” Fe0 pyridine bis(imidazol‐2‐ylidene) and pyridine diphosphine dicarbonyl complexes (see figure) show subtle differences that account for observed spectroscopic trends. Intermolecular C? H activation has been observed in Fe pyridine dicarbene complexes.

A novel selective palladium catalyst system based on bidentate 2,2′‐heteroarylarylphosphines and p‐TsOH has been developed for hydroformylation reactions (see scheme). By applying optimal conditions good to excellent regioselectivity is obtained for the hydroformylation of aliphatic and aromatic olefins. It is shown that a low acid concentration is crucial for obtaining high degrees of the linear isomer.

Calculating cyclization : Theoretical work directed towards the elucidation of the mechanisms of the gold‐, palladium‐, and lanthanum‐catalyzed oxycyclizations (5‐exo versus 6‐endo versus 7‐endo) of γ‐allenols has been pursued in close relationship with the experimental study (Part 1, accompanying paper) and has corroborated the bench results to provide a complete study of the reactivity of γ‐allenols under different metal‐catalyzed conditions.

Lightning quick! A new ultrafast light‐driven molecular motor was developed, which was readily incorporated into a larger trimeric system. The trimer of these motors was studied with STM and at the interface of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite and 1‐phenyloctane the molecules form stable arrays in which the chirality of the trimer is expressed on both the molecular and the supramolecular level (see figure).

Zip it up : Attachment of porphyrins onto complementary DNA strands leads to zipper‐porphyrin arrays and, in the presence of eleven modifications, an increase in the melting temperature of the duplex. Mixed zinc and free‐base porphyrin arrays undergo energy transfer from the zinc porphyrin to the free‐base porphyrin in the annealed duplex but not in the denatured form (see scheme), giving access to reversible formation of potential photonic wires.
