Lithium makes the difference : A simple strategy for the synthesis of lithium‐doped porous metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is developed (see structure; C black, O red, AlO6 blue octahedra), thus paving the way for the facile preparation of lithium‐doped MOFs. Moreover, the significant increase in hydrogen adsorption predicted by theoretical calculations is observed.

Michael, Henry, and Henry : A new one‐pot reaction of α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes and β‐dicarbonyls, which involves a Michael reaction catalyzed by diarylprolinol ethers and an inter–intramolecular Henry tandem reaction catalyzed by TBAF (see scheme), has been developed. The reaction proceeds in high enantio‐ and diastereoselectivity for a wide range of unsaturated aldehydes and β‐dicarbonyl reagents.

In the swim : Colloidal nanoparticles coated with polylactide (PLA, red) and poly(ethylene glycol) brushes (PEG, black) can transfer from organic to aqueous phases across liquid/liquid or liquid/gel interfaces during degradation of the PLA coating (see picture: first step), which is driven selectively by the hydrogen bonding of the PEG coating with the aqueous phase (second step).

Another way to dienes : The ruthenium‐catalyzed 6‐endo‐cycloisomerization of 1,5‐enynes gives the corresponding 1,3‐cyclohexadienes in high to excellent yields. This novel synthetic and catalytic method constitutes another way to selectively prepare 1,3‐cyclohexadienes, this cyclic diene skeleton being a core subunit in many natural products and a useful building block for a variety of organic transformations.

Cross‐coupling carbenes : The coupling of a propargylic ester with a diazoalkane in the presence of [RuCl(cod)Cp*] catalyst leads to the formation of functionalized conjugated dienes with high stereoselectivity. The reaction involves the cross‐coupling of a vinylcarbene fragment, arising from a ruthenium‐catalyzed propargylic ester rearrangement, with a diazoalkane carbene.

A microreactor of hollow polymeric microspheres with Pd nanoparticles immobilized in its wall is designed for hydrogenation of olefins under organic/aqueous biphasic catalysis. The microreactor has an ability to encapsulate and concentrate olefins within the vacancy of the hollow microspheres in the aqueous phase, and therefore hydrogenation within the microreactors runs efficiently with concentrated reactants under organic/aqueous biphasic condition (see scheme).

A new “branch” for polyketide synthases was discovered in the biosynthesis of the antimitotic rhizoxin complex in the endofungal bacterium Burkholderia rhizoxinica. Genetic engineering and the structural elucidation of pathway intermediates revealed that a complex polyketide chain is branched at the β position by an unprecedented conjugate addition of an acetyl building block to an acryloyl precursor (see scheme).
