The infinite coordination polymerization…? of metal ions and multitopic organic ligands is explored to fabricate metal–organic micro‐ and nanospheres that can be used as functional matrices. In their Communication on page 2325 ff., D. Maspoch and co‐workers show how this simple process affords spheres that encapsulate active substances, such as magnetic nanoparticles, organic dyes, and quantum dots, to result in multifunctional spheres. Playing the sax : The enantioselective total syntheses of (?)‐ and (+)‐decarbamoyloxysaxitoxin (doSTX) and (+)‐saxitoxin (STX) are reported. A new methodology was developed for the synthesis of STXs, featuring discriminative reduction of the nitro group and N? O bond in nitroisoxazolidine.
Charging forward : Ionic interactions presented in a multivalent fashion in small‐molecule ionic liquids lead to functional polymer‐like materials (see picture) that are consistent with the formation of a supramolecular ionic network. For example, the ionic material formed from a dication consisting of two covalently linked tetraalkyl phosphonium moieties and a porphyrin tetracarboxylate has a viscosity of 106 Pa s at 25 °C.
Shine your light : Recent work in photocrystallography demonstrates a large photoinduced increase in the magnetic susceptibility of a solid, which is accompanied by significant changes in the bond lengths of the Nd? NC? Fe moiety (see picture; black are ground‐state bond lengths in Å, red are photoinduced bond lengths).
Sleeping beauty? Is the scientific community about to kiss awake iron catalysis, a topic that has been dormant for decades? A recent study on a user‐friendly direct cross‐coupling reaction of alkyl and aryl halides constitutes an important step toward this end through the integration of two different iron‐catalyzed elementary steps into a practical one‐pot procedure.
Combinatorial libraries of segmented polyurethaneurea with gradients in curing temperature were prepared and characterized using a novel high‐throughput mechanical instrument. Stress/strain profiles were taken at different temperature positions on the libraries, and a structure/property relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties was established by correlating the measured strength and strain at break to high‐throughput AFM and FT‐IR measurements on the same library. These results demonstrate the feasibility of rapid and accurate screening of mechanical properties, and their correlation to structure, by using gradient combinatorial polymer libraries.

Sweets for my sweet ! Efficient synthesis of the deoxysugar part of versipelostatin (VST) was achieved by direct and stereoselective glycosidation of the reduced VST aglycon. Comparison of the synthetic and natural VST products using NMR indicate that VST has a β‐d‐digitoxose‐(1,4)‐α‐l‐oleandrose‐(1,4)‐β‐d‐digitoxose trisaccharide. A biological assay indicates that the deoxyoligosaccharide unit of the synthetic glycoside is important for biological activity.

Funky discotics : Photoconductivity is measured in newly synthesized cyclopalladated metallomesogens exhibiting hexagonal columnar mesophases at room temperature. The tuning of the HOMO/LUMO energy levels by modification of the chain/core linkage (ester 1 vs ether 2 ) makes compound 2 photoconductive across the whole UV/Vis/NIR range.

Even though the metal‐induced ring opening of 3,3‐disubstituted cyclopropenes is known to serve as a genuine carbene generator, the use of AuI in this reaction leads to a reactive intermediate with highly cationic character. This result has important implications for gold catalysis in general, which in the past has been commonly attributed to the intervention of gold carbenes.
