Efficient and general conditions for the formation of stereodefined trisubstituted alkenes by using the rhodium‐catalyzed reaction of unactivated Baylis–Hillman adducts with either organoboronic acids or potassium trifluoro(organo)borates are reported (see scheme).
A rationalization of stereoselectivity : The mechanisms of proline‐catalyzed and imidazole‐co‐catalyzed intramolecular Baylis–Hillman reactions have been studied by using density functional theory methods. The computational data has allowed us to rationalize the experimental outcome, validating some of the mechanistic steps proposed in the literature, as well as to propose new ones that considerably change and improve our understanding of the full reaction path (see scheme).
No hurdle is too high : The regioselectivity and stereoselectivity of the halohydroxylation of non‐activated allenes are controlled by a remote sulfinyl group through anchimeric assistance (see scheme). The resulting halohydrines are excellent chiral targets for the preparation of optically pure propargylic alcohols and Baylis–Hillman‐type products.
Chain change : Variations in the position, number, and chain length of the n‐alkoxy chains readily tune the liquid‐crystalline properties of 2,5‐diaryl‐1,3,4‐thiadiazole derivatives from smectic to hexagonal columnar mesophases at room temperature. The calamitic S‐heterocyclic compounds show electrical conductivity in both solid and liquid‐crystal states.
Not blue but red‐brown : A [1]ferrocenophanium ion has been synthesized and isolated as a red‐brown crystalline salt, surprisingly different in color from characteristically blue‐green unstrained ferrocenium ions. Compared to the neutral iron(II) counterpart, the [1]ferrocenophanium ion displays a considerably higher ring tilt and an increased propensity for ring‐opening reactions.
Economical approach : The first organocatalytic asymmetric intramolecular hydroarylation of phenol‐ and aniline‐derived enals offers one of the most straightforward and atom‐economic approaches to enantioriched chromans and tetrahydroquinolines (up to 96 % ee; see scheme).
Just subtract water : Amphiphilic π‐conjugated acyclic oligopyrroles form solvent‐assisted H‐aggregates that give rise to vesicular structures in aqueous solution (see figure). The H‐aggregates are sensitive to the conditions and are transformed into J‐aggregates by the removal of water.
Diaminations are a girl's best friend : New reactions in the field of transition‐metal‐catalyzed diamination of olefins provide a powerful tool for the elaboration of more complex molecules bearing the 1,2‐diamine moiety. An overview of these methods, including asymmetric versions, is given.
A new route to 2H‐thiochromenes using the tandem SN2′ and SNAr reaction of several Baylis‐Hillman acetates having an ortho‐substituent, such as a halogen or nitro group, with sodium sulfide in aqueous dimethyl sulfoxide has been described. 相似文献
Secondary, but second to none : The use of secondary alkyl halides in transition‐metal‐catalyzed cross‐coupling reactions (see scheme) has advanced significantly over the last five years. Selected examples of these transformations are examined, including mechanistic and stereochemical aspects.
Versatile dominoes : A novel, organocatalytic, Michael–Knoevenagel condensation domino reaction of ethyl 4‐diethoxyphosphoryl‐3‐oxobutanoate with various aryl‐ and aliphatic‐substituted α,β‐unsaturated aldehydes catalyzed by a chiral diarylprolinol ether has been successfully performed. The reaction proceeds in a highly enantio‐ and diastereoselective manner giving access to optically active 6‐substituted‐3‐diethoxyphosphoryl‐2‐oxocyclohex‐3‐enecarboxylates (see scheme).
Going through the phases : The title reaction was found to proceed by an initial base‐mediated isomerization to allenyl esters and subsequent phase transfer catalyzed alkylation at the α position of the ester (see scheme).
On edge : Self‐assembled monolayers of a bis(hydrazone)‐based molecular grid physisorbed on graphite are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy (see picture). High order is attained at the supramolecular level by thermal annealing of the grid‐based films. A preferential edge‐on configuration of the molecular grid with respect to the substrate is found.
Functionalized nanodiamonds : Various functional groups have been incorporated into the structures of the naturally occurring diamondoids [1(2)3]tetramantane and [12312]hexamantane (cyclohexamantane), which represent hydrogen‐terminated prism‐shaped nanodiamonds (see picture). The attachment points define the use of these diamond‐like molecules as geometric building blocks for a variety of applications.
Bromide is best : The first [2]rotaxane incorporating the triazolium anion‐binding motif is prepared using bromide anion templation. Preliminary anion‐binding investigations reveal that the rotaxane exhibits the rare selectivity preference for bromide over chloride ions.
