This article reports an experimental study of the permeability of fibrous porous media based on air flow. Two glass wools have been analyzed in three different flow directions to evaluate their anisotropic structure. The usual flow theories such as Darcy’s law, valid for granular materials, have been shown to apply also to these fibrous media which is a more complex structure (fiber arrangement, high porous media,…). The intrinsic permeabilities and the anisotropic factors have been determined from an air permeability measurement based on a standard test for industrial fabrics. The experimental results have been compared to different models, showing the limits of some simplistic models when applied to our highly porous structures. One model, Kyan’s model based on the flow around submerged objects, was, however, found to agree with our experimental data. This study also demonstrates the interesting use of an experimental technique, which is air permeability measurement (water permeability is not adapted), in the investigation of flow phenomena in a fibrous medium.  相似文献

A lattice Boltzmann (LB) method is developed in this article in a combination with X-ray computed tomography to simulate fluid flow at pore scale in order to calculate the anisotropic permeability of porous media. The binary 3D structures of porous materials were acquired by X-ray computed tomography at a resolution of a few microns, and the reconstructed 3D porous structures were then combined with the LB model to calculate their permeability tensor based on the simulated velocity field at pore scale. The flow is driven by pressure gradients imposed in different directions. Two porous media, one gas diffusion porous layer used in fuel cells industry and glass beads, were simulated. For both media, we investigated the relationship between their anisotropic permeability and porosity. The results indicate that the LB model is efficient to simulate pore-scale flow in porous media, and capable of giving a good estimate of the anisotropic permeability for both media. The calculated permeability is in good agreement with the measured date; the relationship between the permeability and porosity for the two media is well described by the Kozeny–Carman equation. For the gas diffusion layer, the simulated results showed that its permeability in one direction could be one order of magnitude higher than those in other two directions. The simulation was based on the single-relaxation time LB model, and we showed that by properly choosing the relaxation time, it could give similar results to those obtained using the multiple-relaxation time (MRT) LB method, but with only one third of the computational costs of MRTLB model.  相似文献

Near wellbore flow in high rate gas wells shows the deviation from Darcy??s law that is typical for high Reynolds number flows, and prediction requires an accurate estimate of the non-Darcy coefficient (?? factor). This numerical investigation addresses the issues of predicting non-Darcy coefficients for a realistic porous media. A CT-image of real porous medium (Castlegate Sandstone) was obtained at a resolution of 7.57???m. The segmented image provides a voxel map of pore-grain space that is used as the computational domain for the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) based flow simulations. Results are obtained for pressure-driven flow in the above-mentioned porous media in all directions at increasing Reynolds number to capture the transition from the Darcy regime as well as quantitatively predict the macroscopic parameters such as absolute permeability and ?? factor (Forchheimer coefficient). Comparison of numerical results against experimental data and other existing correlations is also presented. It is inferred that for a well-resolved realistic porous media images, LBM can be a useful computational tool for predicting macroscopic porous media properties such as permeability and ?? factor.  相似文献

An investigation of the anisotropic permeability of a carbon cloth gas diffusion layer (GDL) based on the integration of X‐ray micro‐tomography and lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulation is presented. The method involves the generation of a 3D digital model of a carbon cloth GDL as manufactured using X‐ray shadow images acquired through X‐ray micro‐tomography at a resolution of 1.74 µm. The resulting 3D model is then split into 21 volumes and integrated with a LB single‐phase numerical solver in order to predict three orthogonal permeability tensors when a pressure difference is prescribed in the through‐plane direction. The 21 regions exhibit porosity values in the range of 0.910–0.955, while the average fibre diameter is 4 µm. The results demonstrate that the simulated through‐plane permeability is about four times higher than the in‐plane permeability for the sample imaged and that the corresponding degrees of anisotropy for the two orthogonal off‐principal directions are 0.22 and 0.27. The results reveal that flow channelling can play an important role in gas transport through the GDL structure due to the non‐homogeneous porosity distribution through the material. The simulated results are also applied to generate a parametric coefficient for the Kozeny–Carman (KC) method of determining permeability. The current research reveals that by applying the X‐ray tomography and LB techniques in a complementary manner, there is a strong potential to gain a deeper understanding of the microscopic fluidic phenomenon in representative models of porous fuel cell structures and how this can influence macroscopic transport characteristics which govern fuel cell performance. This paper presents a numerical approach for the simulation of fluid flow through porous media by proposing a theoretical and numerical meso-to-macro multiscale framework, which combines the advantages of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) with the continuum Theory of Porous Media (TPM) to efficiently and accurately model fluid transport in heterogeneous porous media. In particular, LBM presents an alternative to experiments by studying the flow from a mesoscopic perspective, which in turn, allows the derivation of the material parameters needed for simulating the flow in the macroscopic TPM model. In this work, a meso-macro hierarchic upscaling scheme is applied to investigate the deformation-dependent intrinsic permeability properties and the Darcy/non-Darcy fluid flow regime. Concerning the mesoscale, the intrinsic permeability of the porous domain is computed by means of the LBM model at the first stage. Subsequently, deformation of the medium takes place in furtherance of determining the relation of the aforementioned deformation dependency. Thereupon, these findings are input into the TPM model in order to compute the primary unknown variables, where special focus is laid on the stability challenges in the compaction and near compaction states. With respect to the criteria of non-Darcy fluid flow, the conditions of its onset, i.e. the induced pressure gradient and mean fluid flow velocity, are computed as well using the LBM solver and conveyed afterwards to the macroscopic TPM model. Herein, the non-Darcy intrinsic permeability has been investigated in the TPM approach based on the Forchheimer equation. Simulations done on a synthetic porous micro-structure show that the combined framework proved to stand well between the two approaches.  相似文献

In the present study, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is applied to simulate the flow of non-Newtonian shear-thinning fluids in three-dimensional digitally reconstructed porous domains. The non-Newtonian behavior is embedded in the LBM through a dynamical change of the local relaxation time. The relaxation time is related to the local shear rate in such a way that the power law rheology is recovered. The proposed LBM is applied to the study of power-law fluids in ordered sphere packings and stochastically reconstructed porous domains. A linear relation is found between the logarithm of the average velocity and the logarithm of the body force with a curve slope approximately equal to the inverse power-law index. The validity of the LBM for the flow of shear thinning fluids in porous media is also tested by comparing the average velocity with the well known semi-empirical Christopher–Middleman correlation. Good agreement is observed between the numerical results and the Christopher–Middleman correlation, indicating that the LBM combined with digital reconstruction constitutes a powerful tool for the study of non-Newtonian flow in porous media.  相似文献

The results of an experimental determination of the relative phase permeabilities during flow of two immiscible fluids in stratified sandstone with transversally isotropic characteristics are presented. The measurements were performed on samples oriented in three directions: along, perpendicular to and at an angle of 45° to the stratification plane. An approximate solution of the problem of steady two-phase flow toward a finite gallery in an anisotropic porous medium for arbitrary relative orientation of the gallery and the principal axes of the absolute permeability tensor is given. This solution was tested against the experimental results. The good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results makes it possible to recommend for engineering calculations both the relations between the absolute and phase permeabilities for transversally isotropic and orthotropic porous media and the approximate solution obtained.  相似文献

We introduce a finite-difference method to simulate pore scale steady-state creeping fluid flow in porous media. First, a geometrical approximation is invoked to describe the interstitial space of grid-based images of porous media. Subsequently, a generalized Laplace equation is derived and solved to calculate fluid pressure and velocity distributions in the interstitial space domain. We use a previously validated lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM) as ground truth for modeling comparison purposes. Our method requires on average 17 % of the CPU time used by LBM to calculate permeability in the same pore-scale distributions. After grid refinement, calculations of permeability performed from velocity distributions converge with both methods, and our modeling results differ within 6 % from those yielded by LBM. However, without grid refinement, permeability calculations differ within 20 % from those yielded by LBM for the case of high-porosity rocks and by as much as 100 % in low-porosity and highly tortuous porous media. We confirm that grid refinement is essential to secure reliable results when modeling fluid flow in porous media. Without grid refinement, permeability results obtained with our modeling method are closer to converged results than those yielded by LBM in low-porosity and highly tortuous media. However, the accuracy of the presented model decreases in pores with elongated cross sections.  相似文献

The characterisation of flow through porous media is important for all solid–liquid separation and fluid transport realms. The permeability of porous media can be anisotropic and furthermore, the extent of anisotropy can be increased as a result of an applied compressive force. However, the understanding of how anisotropy develops is incomplete. An overview of research on permeability anisotropy is given and an expression for predicting anisotropy as a function of void ratio is offered. The two underlying assumptions of the proposed model are: flow in different directions occurs within the same network of pores and deformation is primarily due to the compression of the particles in the direction of the applied force rather than due to particle rearrangement. The assumption of network connectivity allows permeability anisotropy to be described as a function of flow path tortuosity only. Results are presented for hydraulic anisotropy measured in lignite that has been upgraded by a compression dewatering method known as mechanical thermal expression. The lignite permeability is shown to be up to eight times greater in the direction perpendicular to compression, suggesting that the rate of dewatering could be significantly increased by choosing the drainage to also be perpendicular to the direction of the applied compressive force. It is illustrated that the proposed anisotropy model can be used to accurately predict the experimentally determined permeability anisotropy ratios for lignite, as well as for other materials including sand, clay and kaolin.  相似文献

The Carman–Kozeny correlation is applied to a medium which is consolidated, highly porous and anisotropic: the expanded then compressed natural graphite. The effective textural properties (i.e. the mean pore diameter, porosity and tortuosity) have been measured by a mercury porosimeter and a heterogeneous diffusion cell. The texture and the permeability (according to the Darcy's law) measured for the two main directions of these orthotropic porous media change over a very wide range depending on their apparent mass densities. Experimental data show that only a part of the total porosity participates in the gas flow in steady state conditions.  相似文献

Lattice Boltzmann direct numerical simulations of turbulent heat transfer over and inside anisotropic porous media are performed. This study considers turbulent plane channel flows whose bottom walls are made from the porous media at the bulk Reynolds number of 2900 with isothermal and conjugate heat transfer wall conditions. Four different porous walls are considered. They are walls with only the wall-normal permeability, with the wall-normal and spanwise permeabilities, with the wall-normal and streamwise permeabilities, and with the isotropic wall-normal, spanwise and streamwise permeabilities. The porosity of the porous walls ranges from 0.6 to 0.8. Discussions on the effects of the anisotropic permeability on turbulent thermal fields are carried out by the instantaneous flow visualizations and the statistical quantities. In particular, temperature fluctuations, turbulent and dispersion heat fluxes are examined both inside and outside the porous walls. Finally, the heat transfer performance is discussed considering the effects of the anisotropic permeability.  相似文献

The permeabilities of microscale fibrous porous media were calculated using the multiple-relaxation-time (MRT) lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). Two models of the microscale fibrous porous media were constructed based on overlapping fibers (simple cubic, body-centered cubic). Arranging the fibers in skew positions yielded two additional models comprising non-overlapping fibers (skewed simple cubic, skewed body-centered cubic). As the fiber diameter increased, the fibers acted as granular inclusions. The effects of the overlapping fibers on the media permeability were investigated. The overlapping fibers yielded permeability values that were a factor of 2.5 larger than those obtained from non-overlapping fibers, but the effects of the fiber arrangement were negligible. Two correlations were obtained for the overlapping and non-overlapping fiber models, respectively. The effects of the rarefaction and slip flow are also discussed. As the Knudsen number increased, the dimensionless permeability increased; however, the increase differed depending on the fiber arrangement. In the slip flow regime, the fiber arrangement inside the porous media became an important factor.  相似文献

The equations of viscoplastic fluid flow through a porous medium are written for all types of anisotropy. It is shown that in anisotropic media the flows with a limiting gradient are characterized by two material tensors: the tensor of permeability (flow resistance) coefficients and the tensor of limiting gradients. A complex of laboratory measurements for determining the tensors of permeability coefficients and limiting gradients is considered for all types of anisotropic media. It is shown that the tensors of permeability coefficients and limiting gradients are coaxial. Conditions of flow onset and fluid flow laws are formulated for media with monoclinic and triclinic symmetries of flow characteristics.  相似文献

Mass transfer in the presence of chemical reactions for flows through porous media is of interest to many disciplines. The Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) is particularly attractive in such cases due to the ease with which it handles complicated boundary conditions. However, useful Lagrangian information (such as solute survival distance, effective diffusivity, collision frequency) is challenging to obtain from the LBM. In this paper, we present a straightforward and efficient Lagrangian methodology (Lagrangian scalar tracking, LST) for performing solute transport simulations in the presence of heterogeneous, first‐order, irreversible reactions, based on a velocity field obtained from LBM. The hybrid LST/LBM technique tracks passive mass markers that have two contributions to their movement: convective (obtained through interpolation of a previously obtained velocity field) and Brownian. Various Schmidt number solutes and different solute release modes can be modeled with a single solvent flow field using this method. Moreover, the mass markers can have a range of reaction rate coefficients. This allows for the exploration of the whole spectrum of first‐order heterogeneous reaction rates with just a single simulation. In order to show the applicability of the LST/LBM scheme, results from a case study are presented in which the consumption of oxygen and/or nutrients within a porous bone tissue engineering scaffold is modeled under flow perfusion culturing conditions. Although the reactive LST methodology described in this paper compliments the LBM, it can also be used with any other flow simulation that can generate the velocity field. In order to capture the hydro‐mechanical impacts on the solid skeleton imposed by the fluid flowing through porous media at the pore‐scale, the flow in the pore space has to be modeled at a resolution finer than the pores, and the no‐slip condition needs to be enforced at the grain–fluid interface. In this paper, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a mesoscopic Navier–Stokes solver, is shown to be an appropriate pore‐scale fluid flow model. The accuracy and lattice sensitivity of LBM as a fluid dynamics solver is demonstrated in the Poiseuille channel flow problem (2‐D) and duct flow problem (3‐D). Well‐studied problems of fluid creeping through idealized 2‐D and 3‐D porous media (J. Fluid Mech. 1959; 5 (2):317–328, J. Fluid Mech. 1982; 115 :13–26, Int. J. Multiphase Flow 1982; 8 (3):193–206) are then simulated using LBM to measure the friction coefficient for various pore throats. The simulation results agree well with the data reported in the literature. The lattice sensitivity of the frictional coefficient is also investigated. Imaging methods are proposed for the characterisation of liquid flows through transparent porous media of matched refractive index. The methods are based on the analysis of laser-illuminated slices, and specialized for the case in which the porous medium is composed of irregularly packed spheres. They include algorithms for the reconstruction of the three-dimensional (3D) sphere arrangement based on a laser scan of the packed bed, particle tracking velocimetry applied to the motions of micro-tracers in a laser-illuminated plane, and techniques for the co-registration of geometry and velocity measurements acquired from different slices. The methods are applied to a cylindrical flow cell filled with mono-sized spheres and operated at Reynolds number Re = 28. The data produced include the full 3D geometry of the packed spheres assembly, the 2D fluid velocity field in the axial centre-plane of the flow cell, and the corresponding porosity and velocity distributions.  相似文献

A theoretical analysis, based on the search for a normal dissipation potential, is performed in order to generalize the empirical non-Darcy one-dimensional flow models to 3-D flows through anisotropic porous media. In an abstract framework, it is proven that a large number of heuristic non-linear equations governing the multidimensional flow through isotropic porous media can be derived starting from a potential strictly related to the mechanical power dissipated by the fluid. Such a formulation allows to define, for the tensor permeability case, a wide class of filtration models according to the Onsager's generalized theory of dissipative mechanical systems. A consistent generalization to anisotropic permeability case of polynomial flow models is proposed. Both primal and dual mixed variational formulations associated to the proposed quadratic and incomplete cubic flow models are introduced and discussed.  相似文献

Effects manifested in two-phase flows through anisotropic porous reservoirs with monoclinic and triclinic characteristics are analyzed. It is shown that in two-phase flows through media with monoclinic and triclinic symmetries of flow characteristics the position of the principal axes of the phase permeability tensors depends on the saturation and does not coincide with the position of the principal axes of the absolute permeability tensor in single-phase flows and that going over from single-to two-phase flow may lead to a change in the symmetry group of the flow characteristics. A general representation of the phase permeability tensor components is presented and formulas are given for the diagonal and nondiagonal components of the relative phase permeabilities, which are universal and can be used for anisotropic media with any type of anisotropy (symmetry) of flow characteristics. A complex of laboratory tests for finding the nondiagonal components of the phase and relative phase permeability tensors is discussed.  相似文献
