The novel Yb succinate metal–organic framework exhibits a reversible single‐crystal to single‐crystal polymorphic transformation (see figure) when it is heated above 130 °C, returning to its initial form when back at room temperature. This transformation produces a change in the coordination sphere of the Yb atoms, which influences the catalytic activity of the material.

Many important cellular processes are regulated by small endogenous noncoding RNAs known as microRNAs (miRNAs). The precise molecular function of many miRNAs is unknown; different loss‐of‐function methods are required to gain insight into the biology of these small RNA molecules. Nucleic acid enzymes termed antagomirzymes are now shown to be valuable tools for the specific knockdown of miRNA in vitro and in vivo (see scheme).

Extreme makeover of cholesterol : Cholesterol exchange is a major reason for the instability of liposomes in blood. The formation of a covalent hybrid between cholesterol and glycerophosphocholine preserves the bilayer‐stabilizing effect of free cholesterol but prevents its transfer from the bilayer. Thus, disterolphospholipids (e.g. 1 ) are valuable new components for liposome formulation.

New inorganic luminescent materials can help to increase energy efficiency when used in plasma display panels and white‐light‐emitting diodes (see color diagram; mixing the three emissions A–C produces any given point within the triangle). Minimum requirements : Crystals and thin films of 1,4‐bis(alkenyl)‐2,5‐dipiperidinobenzenes, which contain only one benzene ring as the aromatic component, emit visible light with excellent solid‐state quantum yields upon irradiation with UV light. Polystyrene thin films doped with the benzenes also exhibit brilliant fluorescence. By modifying the alkenyl groups, the emission color can be tuned in the range from blue to red.

An electrochemical lithographic tool for locally electrografting a non‐conducting organic coating on a conducting substrate with a submicrometer resolution is provided by atomic force scanning electrochemical microscopy (AFM‐SECM). The picture shows the topographic AFM image of the line pattern drawn with an AFM‐SECM tip on a gold surface by direct reduction of an aryl diazonium salt/acrylic acid electrolyte solution.

One step at a time : The in situ monitoring of the step‐by‐step formation of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) by using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), allows the nucleation process and the formation of the secondary building units to be investigated. Growth rates on functionalized organic surfaces with different crystallographic orientations can also be studied.

Stop the breathing : As the organic bridging ligands become more elaborate and large, the resulting MOFs tend to experience significant framework distortion (i.e., breathing) upon solvent removal. Rigidification of MOFs that are built from elongated tetracarboxylate bridging ligands by unusual interlocking and interpenetration leads to highly porous and robust hybrid materials.

Phosphine‐assisted C? H activation of the methyl group of 2‐methylimidazolium compounds led to a series of iridium, rhodium, and palladium complexes of 2‐methyleneimidazolines. Hex nut : An emerging synthetic approach based on metal–organic coordination‐polymer templates has been used to fabricate micro‐ and nanoscale crystals. By using a diverse range of molecular building blocks coupled with conventional synthetic techniques, it is possible to synthesize ZnO crystals with tailored sizes, shapes (such as hexagonal rings; see figure), and surface properties.
