In this paper, we demonstrate the first use of a catecholic initiator for surface-initiated polymerization (SIP) from metal surfaces to create antifouling polymer coatings. A new bifunctional initiator inspired by mussel adhesive proteins was synthesized, which strongly adsorbs to Ti and 316L stainless steel (SS) substrates, providing an anchor for surface immobilization of grafted polymers. Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was performed through the adsorbed biomimetic initiator to polymerize methyl methacrylate macromonomers with oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, surface FT-IR, and contact angle analysis confirmed the sequential grafting of initiator and polymer, and ellipsometry indicated the formation of polymer coatings of up to 100 nm thickness. Cell adhesion experiments performed with 3T3-Swiss albino fibroblasts showed substantially reduced cell adhesion onto polymer grafted Ti and 316L SS substrates as compared to the unmodified metals. Moreover, micropatterning of grafted polymer coatings on Ti surfaces was demonstrated by combining SI-ATRP and molecular assembly patterning by lift-off (MAPL), creating cell-adhesive and cell-resistant regions for potential use as cell arrays. Due to the ability of catechols to bind to a large variety of inorganic surfaces, this biomimetic anchoring strategy is expected to be a highly versatile tool for polymer thin film surface modification for biomedical and other applications.  相似文献

We develop a new process for the preparation of synergistic antifouling functional coatings on gold surfaces via a “grafting to” approach. The strategy includes a synthetic step of polymer brushes that consist of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) and zwitterionic side chains via a typical reversible-addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization process, and a subsequent deposition of the polymer brushes onto a gold substrate. The presence of PEG and zwitterion chains on these polymer brush-coated gold surfaces has been proved to have a synergistic effect on the final antifouling property of the coating. PEG chains lower the electrostatic repulsion between zwitterionic polymer chains and increase their graft density on gold surfaces, while zwitterionic polymer effectively improves the antifouling property that is offered by PEG chains alone. Protein adsorption and cell attachment assays tests are conducted to confirm that this copolymer layer on gold surface has a pronounced resistance against proteins such as Bovine serum albumin and Lysozyme. Importantly, the antifouling property can be systematically adjusted by varying the molar ratio of PEG to zwitterionic chains in the final coating copolymer.  相似文献

We report a universal method for the surface-initated polymerization (SIP) of an antifouling polymer brush on various classes of surfaces, including noble metals, metal oxides, and inert polymers. Inspired by the versatility of mussel adhesive proteins, we synthesized a novel bifunctional tripeptide bromide (BrYKY) that combines atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating alkyl bromide with l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (DOPA) and lysine. The simple dip-coating of substrates with variable wetting properties and compositions, including Teflon, in a BrYKY solution at pH 8.5 led to the formation of a thin film of cross-linked BrYKY. Subsequently, we showed that the BrYKY layer initiated the ATRP of a zwitterionic monomer, sulfobetaine methacrylate (SBMA), on all substrates, resulting in high-density antifouling pSBMA brushes. Both BrYKY deposition and pSBMA grafting were unambiguously confirmed by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and goniometry. All substrates that were coated with BrYKY/pSBMA dramatically reduced bacterial adhesion for 24 h and also resisted mammalian cell adhesion for at least 4 months, demonstrating the long-term stability of the BrYKY anchoring and antifouling properties of pSBMA. The use of BrYKY as a primer and polymerization initiator has the potential to be widely employed in surface-grafted polymer brush modifications for biomedical and other applications.  相似文献

Marine organisms such as plants, algae or small animals can adhere to surfaces of materials that are submerged in ocean. The accumulation of these organisms on surfaces is a marine biofouling process that has considerable adverse effects. Marine biofouling on ship hulls can cause severe fuel consumption increase. Investigations on antifouling polymers are therefore becoming important research topics for marine vessel operations. Antifouling polymers can be applied as coating layers on the ship hull, protecting it against the settlement and growth of sea organisms. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a hydrophilic polymer that can effectively resist the accumulation of marine organisms. PEG-based antifouling coatings have therefore been extensively researched and developed. However, the inferior stability of PEG makes it subject to degradation, rendering it ineffective for long-term services. Zwitterionic polymers have also emerged as promising antifouling materials in recent years. These polymers consist of both positively charged and negatively charged functional groups. Various zwitterionic polymers have been demonstrated to exhibit exceptional antifouling properties. Previously, surface characterizations of zwitterionic polymers have revealed that strong surface hydration is critical for their antifouling properties. In addition to these hydrophilic polymers, amphiphilic materials have also been developed as potential antifouling coatings. Both hydrophobic and hydrophilic functional groups are incorporated into the backbones or sidechains of these polymers. It has been demonstrated that the antifouling performance can be enhanced by precisely controlling the sequence of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic functionalities. Since biofouling generally occurs at the outer surface of the coatings, the antifouling properties of these coatings are closely related to their surface characteristics in water. Therefore, understanding of the surface molecular structures of antifouling materials is imperative for their future developments. In this review, we will summarize our recent advancements of antifouling material surface analysis using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. SFG is a surface-sensitive technique which can provide molecular information of water and polymer structures at interfaces in situ in real time. The antifouling polymers we will review include zwitterionic polymer brushes, mixed charged polymers, and amphiphilic polypeptoids. Interfacial hydration studies of these polymers by SFG will be presented. The salt effect on antifouling polymer surface hydration will also be discussed. In addition, the interactions between antifouling materials and protein molecules as well as algae will be reviewed. The above research clearly established strong correlations between strong surface hydration and good antifouling properties. It also demonstrated that SFG is a powerful technique to provide molecular level understanding of polymer antifouling mechanisms.  相似文献

The effect of oxygen plasma treatment on the surface properties of tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) substrates and the changes in surface properties of treated ITO substrates with ageing time were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle and surface free energy measurements. Experimental results show that oxygen plasma treatment increases the oxygen concentration, decreases the carbon concentration, and enhances the surface free energy and polarity, and thereby improves the surface properties of ITO substrates. However, the improved ITO surface properties tended to decay and the surface free energy decreased, with ageing time. In addition, the ageing effect of treated ITO substrates on the performance of polymer light-emitting diodes (LEDs) was studied with respect to the driving voltage, electroluminescent luminance and efficiency. We observe that the ITO substrates aged for various times result in significant differences in optical and electrical characteristics which become worse as the ageing time increases. The optical and electrical performance of polymer LEDs is closely related to the surface properties of ITO substrate and the interface characteristics of ITO/polymer.  相似文献

Macromolecular anchoring layer approach was used for preparation of an effective macroinitiator for the synthesis of grafted polymer layers by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiated from the surface. For the initial surface modification, a thin layer of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was deposited on the surface of a silicon wafer. The ATRP macroinitiator was synthesized on the substrate surface by the reaction between epoxy groups of PGMA and carboxy functionality of bromoacetic acid (BAA). Variation of the time and temperature of the BAA deposition as well as PGMA layer thickness allowed control over the amount of BAA attached to the surface. The PGMA anchoring layer allowed the achievement of initiator surface density significantly higher than that reported for a self-assembled monolayer of ATRP initiators. Polymer brushes were synthesized on the PGMA/BAA-modified substrates by ATRP. Different surface concentrations of BAA were used in our grafting experiments to acquire knowledge about the relationship between the amount of initiator anchored to the surface through PGMA and the rate of the grafted layer formation. The increase in the surface density of the initiating moieties led to the increase in the grafting rate. However, a cutoff initiator concentration beyond which no increase of the thickness of the grafted layer was observed. From comparison between the surface densities of the initiator and the attached polymer it was determined that the efficiency of the initiation from the surface was on the level of 5-15%.  相似文献

The current paper reports the synthesis of a highly hydrophilic, antifouling dendronized poly(3,4,5-tris(2-(2-(2-hydroxylethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)benzyl methacrylate) (PolyPEG) brush using surface initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) on PDMS substrates. The PDMS substrates were first oxidized in H2SO4/H2O2 solution to transform the Si-CH3 groups on their surfaces into Si-OH groups. Subsequently, a surface initiator for ATRP was immobilized onto the PDMS surface, and PolyPEG was finally grafted onto the PDMS surface via copper-mediated ATRP. Various characterization techniques, including contact angle measurements, attenuated total reflection infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, were used to ascertain the successful grafting of the PolyPEG brush onto the PDMS surface. Furthermore, the wettability and stability of the PDMS-PolyPEG surface were examined by contact angle measurements. Anti-adhesion properties were investigated via protein adsorption, as well as bacterial and cell adhesion studies. The results suggest that the PDMS-PolyPEG surface exhibited durable wettability and stability, as well as significantly anti-adhesion properties, compared with native PDMS surfaces. Additionally, our results present possible uses for the PDMS-PolyPEG surface as adhesion barriers and anti-fouling or functional surfaces in biomedical applications.  相似文献

To be better used as medical implants in orthopedic and dental clinical applications, titanium and titanium-based alloys need to be capable of inducing osteogenesis. Here we describe a method that allows the facile decoration of titanium surfaces to impart an osteogenesis capacity. A Ti surface was first deposited on a poly(OEGMA-r-HEMA) film using surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) with the further step of carboxylation. The modified surfaces were resistant to cell adhesion. Fibronectin (FN) and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) were further immobilized onto p(OEGMA-r-HEMA) matrices. Our results demonstrate that the FN- and rhBMP-2-conjugated polymer surfaces could induce the adhesion of MC3T3 cells on Ti surfaces. Moreover, the protein-tethered surface exhibited enhanced cell differentiation in terms of alkaline phosphatase activity compared to that of the pristine Ti surface at similar cell proliferation rates. This research establishes a simple modification method of Ti surfaces via Ti-thiolate self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and SI-ATRP and identifies a dual-functional Ti surface that combines antifouling and osseointegration promotion.  相似文献

We describe the formation and characterization of surface-passivating poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) films on indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrates. PEG chains with a molecular weight of 2000 and 5000 D were covalently attached to the substrates in a systematic approach using different coupling schemes. The coupling strategies included the direct grafting with PEG-silane, PEG-methacrylate, and PEG-bis(amine), as well as the two-step functionalization with aldehyde-bearing silane films and subsequent coupling with PEG-bis(amine). Elemental analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the successful surface modification, and XPS and ellipsometry provided values for film thicknesses. XPS and ellipsometry thickness values were almost identical for PEG-silane films but differed by up to 400% for the other PEG layers, suggesting a homogeneous layer for PEG-silane but an inhomogeneous distribution for other PEG coatings on the molecularly rough ITO substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and water contact angle goniometry confirmed the different degrees of surface homogeneity of the polymer films, with PEG-silane reducing the AFM rms surface roughness by 50% and the water contact angle hysteresis by 75% compared to uncoated ITO. The ability of the PEG layers to passivate the substrate against the nonspecific adsorption of biopolymers was tested using fluorescence-labeled immunoglobulin G and DNA oligonucleotides in combination with fluorescence microscopy. The results indicate a positive relationship between film density and homogeneity on one hand and the ability to passivate against biopolymer adhesion on the other hand. The most homogeneous layers prepared with PEG-silane reduced the nonspecific adsorption of fluorescence-labeled DNA by a factor of 300 compared to uncoated ITO. In addition, the study finds that the ratio of film thicknesses derived by ellipsometry and XPS is a useful parameter to quantify the structural integrity of PEG layers on molecularly rough ITO surfaces. The findings may be applied to characterize PEG or other polymeric films on similarly coarse substrates.  相似文献

In this work, nonfouling zwitterionic polymers were grafted via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from surfaces covered with an adhesive catechol initiator. The catechol initiator was attached to both bare gold and amino-functionalized surfaces, and the nonfouling performances of the resulting polymer brushes were compared. Under optimal conditions, ultralow protein adsorption from both single-protein solutions of fibrinogen and lysozyme and complex media of 10% blood serum and 100% blood plasma/serum was achieved. Furthermore, the 3-day accumulation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the treated glass surfaces was studied in situ using a laminar flow chamber. The results showed that these zwitterionic coatings dramatically reduced the biofilm formation of P. aeruginosa as compared to the reference bare glass.  相似文献

Human blood plasma and serum pose significant challenges to implanted devices because of highly unfavorable nonspecific protein adsorption on the surface. In this work, we introduce an improved two-step method to immobilize initiator thiols on a gold substrate for the surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). We investigate protein adsorption from a single-protein solution, diluted (10%) and undiluted (100%) human blood plasma, and serum on the poly(HPMA) brushes with different film thicknesses using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors. SPR results show a correlation between antifouling properties and film thickness; that is, the poly(HPMA) brushes exhibit high protein resistance at medium film thicknesses of ~25-40 nm (e.g. <0.3 ng/cm(2) for single-protein adsorption and 10% human blood plasma and serum, ~24.5 ng/cm(2) for 100% human serum, and ~52.8 ng/cm(2) for 100% human plasma at a thickness of ~29 nm). With an optimal film thickness and surface roughness, the poly(HPMA) brush also demonstrates its high resistance to fibroblast adhesion. This work provides an alternative surface polymerization approach to preparing effective antifouling poly(HPMA) materials for potential applications in blood-contacting medical devices.  相似文献

In this work, we used different treatment methods (ultrasonic degreasing, hydrochloric acid treatment, and oxygen plasma) to modify the surfaces of indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates for organic light-emitting devices. The surface properties of treated ITO substrates were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), sheet resistance, contact angle, and surface energy measurements. Experimental results show that the ITO surface properties are closely related to the treatment methods, and the oxygen plasma is more efficient than the other treatments since it brings about smoother surfaces, lower sheet resistance, higher work function, and higher surface energy and polarity of the ITO substrate. Moreover, polymer light-emitting electrochemical cells (PLECs) with differently treated ITO substrates as device electrodes were fabricated and characterized. It is found that surface treatments of ITO substrates have a certain degree of influence upon the injection current, brightness, and efficiency, but hardly upon the turn-on voltages of current injection and light emission, which are in agreement with the measured optical energy gap of the electroluminescent polymer. The oxygen plasma treatment on the ITO substrate yields the best performance of PLECs, due to the improvement of interface formation and electrical contact of the ITO substrate with the polymer blend in the PLECs.  相似文献

Bifunctional quaternary ammonium ionic liquid bearing redox and polymerisable units was synthesized. The electrochemical investigations of the ferrocene monomer ionic liquid were performed. Following that, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was used to build polymer brushes onto the electrode surface. The presence of the Poly(ferrocenyl quaternary ammonium) was evidenced by surface and electrochemical analysis. The latter exhibits high electron transfer rate and the presence of ions within the polymer framework leads to record the attached ferrocenyl redox signal in solution without adding supporting electrolyte. Finally, the wettability of the surface was modulated by electrochemical switch and by anion exchange within the polymer.  相似文献

In this work, two novel zwitterionic polymer hydrogels (Gel-P4VP-psl (d), Gel-P4VP-bpa (d)) and cationic polymer hydrogels (Gel-P4VP-eb (f)) were prepared for the first time. The differences of functionality between cationic polymer hydrogels and zwitterionic polymer hydrogels were studied fully. The results showed that when the molar quantity ratio of cross-linker/pyridinium unit in Gel-P4VP-psl (d) and Gel-P4VP-bpa (d) was about 0.25:1, they would have proper mechanical property, excellent antibacterial ability and antifouling ability. Correspondingly, the charge quantity ratios of negative charges/positive charges in Gel-P4VP-psl (d) and Gel-P4VP-bpa (d) could be calculated to be 1:2 theoretically. Although Gel-P4VP-eb (f) with only positive charges had strongly antibacterial ability, being lack of negative charges in cationic polymer hydrogels made its antifouling ability disappear completely. Gel-P4VP-psl (d) and Gel-P4VP-bpa (d) have potential in the application of antibacterial and antifouling materials.  相似文献

A novel imidazole-functionalized stationary phase for hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) was prepared via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP). 1-Vinylimidazole as a monomer was polymerized on the surface of initiator-immobilized silica by SI-ATRP using CuCl and 2,2'-bipyridyl as a catalyst. The graft chain length and polymer grafting density were controlled by varying the ratio of monomer to initiator. The resulting materials were characterized by elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis. Then, high-performance liquid chromatography separation of eight nucleobases/nucleosides was performed on the imidazole-functionalized chromatographic column in HILIC mode. The effects of mobile phase composition, buffer pH, and column temperature on the separation of nucleobases/nucleosides were investigated, and the retention mechanisms were studied. Chromatographic parameters were calculated, and the results showed that surface adsorption through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction dominated the retention behavior of the solutes in HILIC mode. Lastly, the stationary phase was successfully used to determine the nucleobases and nucleosides from Cordyceps militaris.  相似文献

Presented here is a radically novel approach to reduce concentration polarization and, potentially, also fouling by colloids present in aqueous feeds: magnetically responsive micromixing membranes. Hydrophilic polymer chains, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA), were grafted via controlled surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) on the surface of polyamide composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes and then end-capped with superparamagnetic iron oxide magnetite (Fe(3)O(4)) nanoparticles. The results of all functionalization steps, that is, bromide ATRP initiator immobilization, SI-ATRP, conversion of PHEMA end groups from bromide to amine, and carboxyl-functional Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticle immobilization via peptide coupling, have been confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). These nanoparticles experience a magnetic force as well as a torque under an oscillating external magnetic field. It has been shown, using particle image velocimetry (PIV), that the resulting movement of the polymer brushes at certain magnetic field frequencies induces mixing directly above the membrane surface. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that with such membranes the NF performance could significantly be improved (increase of flux and salt rejection) by an oscillating magnetic field, which can be explained by a reduced concentration polarization in the boundary layer. However, the proof-of-concept presented here for the active alteration of macroscopic flow via surface-anchored micromixers based on polymer-nanoparticle conjugates has much broader implications.  相似文献

This work features the controllability of surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) of methyl methacrylate, initiated by a multilayered 2-bromoisobutyryl moiety formed via diazonium chemistry. The thickness as a function of polymerization time has been studied by varying different parameters such as the bromine content of the initiator layer, polarity of reaction medium, ligand type (L), and the ratio of activator (Cu(I)) to deactivator (Cu(II)) in order to ascertain the controllability of the SI-ATRP process. The variation of thickness versus surface concentration of bromine shows a gradual transition from mushroom to brush-type conformation of the surface anchored chains in both polar and nonpolar reaction medium. Interestingly, it is revealed that very thick polymer brushes, on the order of 1 μm, can be obtained at high bromine content of the initiator layer in toluene. The initial polymerization rate and the overall final thickness are higher in the case of nonpolar solvent (toluene) compared to polar medium (acetonitrile or N,N-dimethylformamide). The ligand affects the initial rate of polymerization, which correlates with the redox potentials of the pertinent Cu(II)/Cu(I) complexes (L = Me(6)TREN, PMDETA, and BIPY). It is also observed that the ability of polymer brushes to reinitiate depends on the initial thickness and the solvent used for generating it.  相似文献

In this study, a surface grafting of nonfouling poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMA) on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) was carried out via surface-initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) to improve hemocompatibility of polymer based biomaterials. To do this, the coupling agent with hydroxyl groups for the ATRP initiator was first anchored on the surface of PET films using photochemical method, and then these hydroxyl groups were esterified by bromoisobutyryl bromide, from which PET with various main chain lengths of PEGMA was prepared. The structures and properties of modified PET surfaces were investigated using water contact angle (WAC), ATR-FTIR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Atomic force microscopy (AFM). The molecular weights of the free polymer from solution were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). These results indicated that grafting of PEGMA on PET film is a simple way to change its surface properties. The protein adsorption resistance on the surfaces of PET was primarily evaluated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The result demonstrated that the protein adsorption could be well suppressed by poly(PEGMA) brush structure on the surface of PET. This work provides a new approach for polymers to enhance their biocompatibility.  相似文献

Well-controlled polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) on Au surfaces by surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was carried out at room temperature by a silanization method. Initial attempts to graft poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) layers from initiators attached to alkanethiol monolayers yielded PVP films with thicknesses less than 5 nm. The combined factors of the difficulty in the controllable polymerization of NVP and the instability of alkanethiol monolayers led to the difficulty in the controlled polymerization of NVP on Au surfaces. Therefore, the silanization method was employed to form an adhesion layer for initiator attachment. This method allowed well-defined ATRP polymerization to occur on Au surfaces. Water contact angle, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and reflectance Fourier transform infrared (reflectance FTIR) spectroscopy were used to characterize the modified surfaces. The PVP-modified gold surface remained stable at 130 °C for 3 h, showing excellent thermal stability. Thus, postfunctionalization of polymer brushes at elevated temperatures is made possible. The silanization method was also applied to modify SPR chips and showed potential applications in biosensors and biochips.  相似文献

A novel approach was developed for the synthesis of tethered polymer layers with thickness and grafting density gradients. Poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was employed as a primary anchoring layer to attach the polymer chains to the surface of a silicon wafer. A linear temperature gradient heated stage was used for the generation of a gradual variation in the thickness of the anchoring PGMA film along the substrate. The obtained gradient was translated into the polymerization initiator gradient via the reaction between the epoxy groups of PGMA and the carboxyl functionality of 2-bromo-2-methylpropionic acid (BPA). The attachment of BPA to the surface modified with the monolayer of PGMA was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. To complete the experimental procedures, surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization was performed to synthesize the grafted polymer layers with thickness and surface densities that were varied along the substrate. The grafting density of the samples created in this three-step process ranged from 0.75 +/- 0.05 to 1.5 +/- 0.25 chains/nm(2). It was estimated, from a comparison of the surface densities of the initiator and the attached polymer, that the efficiency of the initiation from the surface was on the order of 5-10% and was dependent upon the surface concentration of the initiator and the time of polymerization.  相似文献
