We study the existence and stability of solutions of the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the combined presence of a parabolic and a periodic potential. The motivating physical example consists of Bose-Einstein condensates confined in an harmonic (e.g., magnetic) trap and an optical lattice. By connecting the nonlinear problem with the underlying linear spectrum, we examine the bifurcation of nonlinear modes out of the linear ones for both focusing and defocusing nonlinearities. In particular, we find real-valued solutions (such as multipoles) and complex-valued ones (such as vortices). A primary motivation of the present work is to develop "rules of thumb" about what waveforms to expect emerging in the nonlinear problem and about the stability of those modes. As a case example of the latter, we find that among the real-valued solutions, the one with larger norm for a fixed value of the chemical potential is expected to be unstable.  相似文献

We study optical beams that are supported at the surface of a medium with a linear index potential and by a piecewise linear wedge-type potential. In the linear limit the modes are described by Airy functions. In the nonlinear regime we find families of solutions that bifurcate from the linear modes and study their stability for both self-focusing and self-defocusing Kerr nonlinearity. The total power of such nonlinear waves is finite without the need for apodization.  相似文献

With the aid of computation, we consider the variable-coefficient coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with the effects of group-velocity dispersion, self-phase modulation and cross-phase modulation, which have potential applications in the long-distance communication of two-pulse propagation in inhomogeneous optical fibers. Based on the obtained nonisospectral linear eigenvalue problems (i.e. Lax pair), we construct the Darboux transformation for such a model to derive the optical soliton solutions. In addition, through the one- and two-soliton-like solutions, we graphically discuss the features ofpicosecond solitons in inhomogeneous optical fibers.  相似文献

We consider a general form of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation with time- and space-dependent effective mass, external potential and strength of interatomic interaction. Using the inverse-scattering method, we derive the integrability condition of this equation within a general scheme that can be used to find exact solutions of a wide range of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations. We use this condition to derive exact solitonic solutions of the one-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation corresponding to a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped by a periodic potential. Both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions are considered. The values of the parameters of the potential can be chosen such that the periodic potential becomes almost identical to that of an optical lattice.  相似文献

In this paper, a Hirota method is developed for applying to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an arbitrary time-dependent linear potential which denotes the dynamics of soliton solutions in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation. The nonlinear Schrödinger equation is decoupled to two equations carefully. With a reasonable assumption the one- and two-soliton solutions are constructed analytically in the presence of an arbitrary time-dependent linear potential.  相似文献

The Heisenberg equation for phonon operators in nonlinear lattices is derived establishing the interaction Hamiltonian included higher powers of particle-hole pairs in nonlinear lattices. A phonon operator consists of a particle-hole pair in the harmonic potential approximation in the two band model; it represents an up or down transition of atoms between two levels. Applying the boson transformation method to the Heisenberg equation for phonon operators, we obtain the classical dynamical equation and a linear equation with the self-consistent potential created by the extended objects in nonlinear lattices. The boson transformation leads to soliton solutions in the long wavelength limit. The linear equation can be used to obtain scattering states, bound states and translational modes for phonons.  相似文献

We find exact solutions of the two- and three-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a supporting potential. We focus in the case where the diffraction operator is of the hyperbolic type and both the potential and the solution have the form of an X-wave. Following similar arguments, several additional families of exact solutions can also can be found irrespectively of the type of the diffraction operator (hyperbolic or elliptic) or the dimensionality of the problem. In particular we present two such examples: The one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a stationary and a “breathing” potential and the two-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger with a Bessel potential.  相似文献

A mechanism for asymmetric (nonreciprocal) wave transmission is presented. As a reference system, we consider a layered nonlinear, nonmirror-symmetric model described by the one-dimensional discrete nonlinear Schr?dinger equation with spatially varying coefficients embedded in an otherwise linear lattice. We construct a class of exact extended solutions such that waves with the same frequency and incident amplitude impinging from left and right directions have very different transmission coefficients. This effect arises already for the simplest case of two nonlinear layers and is associated with the shift of nonlinear resonances. Increasing the number of layers considerably increases the complexity of the family of solutions. Finally, numerical simulations of asymmetric wave packet transmission are presented which beautifully display the rectifying effect.  相似文献

We obtain exact spatial localized mode solutions of a (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with constant diffraction and cubic-quintic nonlinearity in PT-symmetric potential, and study the linear stability of these solutions. Based on these results, we further derive exact spatial localized mode solutions in a cubic-quintic medium with harmonic and PT-symmetric potentials. Moreover, the dynamical behaviors of spatial localized modes in the exponential diffraction decreasing waveguide and the periodic distributed amplification system are investigated.  相似文献

We consider electromagnetic nonlinear normal modes in cylindrical cavity resonators filled with a nonlinear nondispersive medium. The key feature of the analysis is that exact analytic solutions of the nonlinear field equations are employed to study the mode properties in detail. Based on such a nonperturbative approach, we rigorously prove that the total energy of free nonlinear oscillations in a distributed conservative system, such as that considered in our work, can exactly coincide with the sum of energies of the normal modes of the system. This fact implies that the energy orthogonality property, which has so far been known to hold only for linear oscillations and fields, can also be observed in a nonlinear oscillatory system.  相似文献

Two nonlinear models are proposed to investigate the focused acoustic waves that the nonlinear effects will be important inside the liquid around the scatterer. Firstly, the one dimensional solutions for the widely used Westervelt equation with different coordinates are obtained based on the perturbation method with the second order nonlinear terms. Then, by introducing the small parameter (Mach number), a dimensionless formulation and asymptotic perturbation expansion via the compressible potential flow theory is applied. This model permits the decoupling between the velocity potential and enthalpy to second order, with the first potential solutions satisfying the linear wave equation (Helmholtz equation), whereas the second order solutions are associated with the linear non-homogeneous equation. Based on the model, the local nonlinear effects of focused acoustic waves on certain volume are studied in which the findings may have important implications for bubble cavitation/initiation via focused ultrasound called HIFU (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound). The calculated results show that for the domain encompassing less than ten times the radius away from the center of the scatterer, the non-linear effect exerts a significant influence on the focused high intensity acoustic wave. Moreover, at the comparatively higher frequencies, for the model of spherical wave, a lower Mach number may result in stronger nonlinear effects.  相似文献

We construct one-soliton solutions for the nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation with variable quadratic Hamiltonians in a unified form by taking advantage of the complete (super) integrability of generalized harmonic oscillators. The soliton-wave evolution in external fields with variable quadratic potentials is totally determined by the linear problem, like motion of a classical particle with acceleration, and the (self-similar) soliton shape is due to a subtle balance between the linear Hamiltonian (dispersion and potential) and nonlinearity in the Schr¨odinger equation by the standards of soliton theory. Most linear (hypergeometric, Bessel) and a few nonlinear (Jacobian elliptic, second Painlev′e transcendental) classical special functions of mathematical physics are linked together through these solutions, thus providing a variety of nonlinear integrable cases. Examples include bright and dark solitons and Jacobi elliptic and second Painlev′e transcendental solutions for several variable Hamiltonians that are important for research in nonlinear optics, plasma physics, and Bose–Einstein condensation. The Feshbach-resonance matter-wave-soliton management is briefly discussed from this new perspective.  相似文献

In this paper, we establish exact solutions for some special nonlinear partial differential equations. The (G′/G)-expansion method is used to construct travelling wave solutions of the two-dimensional sine-Gordon equation, Dodd–Bullough–Mikhailov and Schrödinger–KdV equations, which appear in many fields such as, solid-state physics, nonlinear optics, fluid dynamics, fluid flow, quantum field theory, electromagnetic waves and so on. In this method we take the advantage of general solutions of second-order linear ordinary differential equation (LODE) to solve many nonlinear evolution equations effectively. The (G′/G)-expansion method is direct, concise and elementary and can be used with a wider applicability for handling many nonlinear wave equations.  相似文献

A nonlinear generalisation of Schrödinger's equation had previously been obtained using information-theoretic arguments. The nonlinearities in that equation were of a nonpolynomial form, equivalent to the occurrence of higher-derivative nonlinear terms at all orders. Here we construct some exact solutions to that equation in 1+11+1 dimensions. On the half-line, the solutions resemble (exponentially damped) Bloch waves even though no external periodic potential is included. The solutions are nonperturbative as they do not reduce to solutions of the linear theory in the limit that the nonlinearity parameter vanishes. An intriguing feature of the solutions is their infinite degeneracy: for a given energy, there exists a very large arbitrariness in the normalisable wavefunctions. We also consider solutions to a q-deformed version of the nonlinear equation and discuss a natural discretisation implied by the nonpolynomiality. Finally, we contrast the properties of our solutions with other solutions of nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the literature and suggest some possible applications of our results in the domains of low-energy and high-energy physics.  相似文献

In this paper,we investigate some exact soliton solutions for a generalized variable-coefficients nonlinear Schrdinger equation (NLS) with an arbitrary time-dependent linear potential which describes the dynamics of soliton solutions in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensations. Under some reasonable assumptions,one-soliton and two-soliton solutions are constructed analytically by the Hirota method. From our results, some previous one-and two-soliton solutions for some NLS-type equations can be recovered by some appropriate selection of the various parameters. Some figures are given to demonstrate some properties of the one-and the two-soliton and the discussion about the integrability property and the Hirota method is given finally.  相似文献

Applying the similarity transformation,we construct the exact vortex solutions for topological charge S ≥ 1 and the approximate fundamental soliton solutions for S = 0 of the two-dimensional cubic-quintic nonlinear Schrdinger equation with spatially modulated nonlinearities and harmonic potential. The linear stability analysis and numerical simulation are used to exam the stability of these solutions. In different profiles of cubic-quintic nonlinearities, some stable solutions for S ≥ 0 and the lowest radial quantum number n = 1 are found. However, the solutions for n ≥ 2 are all unstable.  相似文献

The solutions to a linear wave equation can satisfy the principle of superposition,i.e.,the linear superposition of two or more known solutions is still a solution of the linear wave equation. We show in this article that many nonlinear wave equations possess exact traveling wave solutions involving hyperbolic, triangle, and exponential functions, and the suitable linear combinations of these known solutions can also constitute linear superposition solutions to some nonlinear wave equations with special structural characteristics. The linear superposition solutions to the generalized KdV equation K(2,2,1),the Oliver water wave equation, and the k(n,n) equation are given. The structure characteristic of the nonlinear wave equations having linear superposition solutions is analyzed, and the reason why the solutions with the forms of hyperbolic, triangle, and exponential functions can form the linear superposition solutions is also discussed.  相似文献

The investigation of the exact traveling wave solutions to the nonlinear evolution equations plays an important role in the study of nonlinear physical phenomena. To understand the mechanisms of those physical phenomena, it is necessary to explore their solutions and properties. The Wronskian technique is a powerful tool to construct multi-soliton solutions for many nonlinear evolution equations possessing Hirota bilinear forms. In the process of utilizing the Wronskian technique, the main difficulty lies in the construction of a system of linear differential conditions, which is not unique. In this paper,we give a universal method to construct a system of linear differential conditions.  相似文献
