国际杂志Fuzzy Information and Engineering即将创刊

由Springer出版社、中国运筹学会模糊信息与工程分会主办，广州大学合作承办的国际杂志Fuzzy Information and Engineering将于2009年创刊。由曹炳元教授任主编，模糊数学创始人L.A．Zadeh教授任名誉主编。创刊号出版时间是：onlink版2009年1月，print版2009年3月。该刊为国际英文季刊，坚持模糊数学理论与应用并举，以应用为主的办刊方针，

作为《数学通讯》的忠实读者,笔者得到该刊2013年上半月刊第7、8期后便被《问题征解》一栏第143题吸引住了．凭感觉,这又是一道适合学生的好题,于是先思考了起来,没有想到竟引出来一个平常少见的问题．

Solvability of a nonlinear fifth‐order difference equation

Some formulas for well‐defined solutions to four very special cases of a nonlinear fifth‐order difference equation have been presented recently in this journal, where some of them were proved by the method of induction, some are only quoted, and no any theory behind the formulas was given. Here, we show in an elegant constructive way how the general solution to the difference equation can be obtained, from which the special cases very easily follow, which is also demonstrated here. We also give some comments on the local stability results on the special cases of the nonlinear fifth‐order difference equation previously publish in this journal.     

Fredholm operator families —II

This paper is a continuation of a former one which has appeared in this journal. After considering (continuous and smooth) bundles of subspaces of an arbitrary topological vector space (tvs) we show how they appear naturally as image or kernel of semi-Fredholm families. We also extend some well known results of holomorphic Fredholm families to the setting of arbitrary tvs.     

A profile of OR research and practice published in the <Emphasis Type="Italic">Journal of the Operational Research Society</Emphasis>

In this paper we reflect on the last 10 years of the Journal of the Operational Research Society (JORS). We use metadata and citation analysis to profile OR research and practice published in this prestigious journal. The analysis of the published material includes examining variables such as the most productive authors, the papers having the highest number of citations, the universities and organisations associated with the most publications and their geographic diversity, OR techniques and their application areas, the number of authors per paper, the background of the authors, etc. Moreover, this work includes variables from a previously published study of JORS that profiled research from 1981 to 1999. Therefore, the analysis allows a comparison to be conducted between some of the findings of the two studies. This research has implications for researchers, journal editors and research institutions.     

Comment on ‘some computational results on real 0–1 knapsack problems’

A logical test used in some knapsack algorithms was recently described in this journal as erroneous. We show that the test is correct.     

NOTE ON THE PAPER “ AN NEGATIVE ANSWER TO A CONJECTURE ON THE SELF-SIMILAR SETS SATISFYING THE OPEN SET CONDITION”

In this paper,we present a more simple and much shorter proof for the main result in the paper " An negative answer to a conjecture on the self-similar sets satisfying the open set condition",which was published in the journal Analysis in Theory and Applications in 2009.     

After OR: An Agenda for Postmodernism and Poststructuralism in OR

Postmodernism and poststructuralism have only been mentioned in passing within this journal. There is much more to be said, and this paper aims to open up the debate, to begin to explore the vast terrain and to present one/some agenda/s for the future, introducing some of the ideas that have inspired O(u)R practice. The paper is in four episodes. We begin by exploring the differences between modernism and postmodernism and introducing some of our sources (episode 1), moving on to the study of language through structuralism and into poststructuralism (episode 2). This section introduces some key concepts and approaches which we illustrate in a short case study (episode 3) of the language of OR. The final section (episode 4) sketches in the outlines of our future agenda. A warning is in order for people unfamiliar with postmodernism: the terminologies and style may seem unusual and untraditional for the journal.     

George Baron and the Mathematical Correspondent

George Baron immigrated to the United States from England at the end of the eighteenth century. He edited the first mathematical journal in the United States, the Mathematical Correspondent. This journal was strongly influenced by the popular English journals that contained mathematical problems and their solutions.     

Stability and Bifurcations of Rotors in Fluid Film Bearings

To study the nonlinear phenomena of rotors in the sense of bifurcation theory, the mechanical model of a symmetric flexible rotor is investigated which is supported by two identical journal bearings. Two types of journal bearings are considered. While the oil whirl and oil whip oscillations of rotors in plain journal bearings are widely examined, the floating ring bearings cause a quite different vibration behavior with several mode interactions and an area of so-called critical limit cycles leading to a rotor damage. For both types a Hopf bifurcation marks the beginning of the self-excited oscillations in the case of a perfectly balanced rotor. By applying the methods of numerical continuation the occurring limit cycles as well as their stability are determined. The different nonlinear effects with the corresponding bifurcations are explained by describing the global solution behavior of the rotor-bearing systems. (© 2010 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In the recent paper of this journal [7], a common fixed point theorem in G-complete fuzzy metric spaces under the t-norm Min was proved. We show that this theorem actually holds in more general situations.
