The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between some coffee roasting variables (weight loss, density and moisture) with near infrared (NIR) spectra of original green (i.e. raw) and differently roasted coffee samples, in order to test the availability of non-destructive NIR technique to predict coffee roasting degree. Separate calibration and validation models, based on partial least square (PLS) regression, correlating NIR spectral data of 168 representatives and suitable green and roasted coffee samples with each roasting variable, were developed. Using PLS regression, a prediction of the three modelled roasting responses was performed. High accuracy results were obtained, whose root mean square errors of the residuals in prediction (RMSEP) ranged from 0.02 to 1.23%. Obtained data allowed to construct robust and reliable models for the prediction of roasting variables of unknown roasted coffee samples, considering that measured vs. predicted values showed high correlation coefficients (r from 0.92 to 0.98). Results provided by calibration models proposed were comparable in terms of accuracy to the conventional analyses, revealing a promising feasibility of NIR methodology for on-line or routine applications to predict and/or control coffee roasting degree via NIR spectra.  相似文献

In near-infrared (NIR) measurements, some physical features of the sample can be responsible for effects like light scattering, which lead to systematic variations unrelated to the studied responses. These errors can disturb the robustness and reliability of multivariate calibration models. Several mathematical treatments are usually applied to remove systematic noise in data, being the most common derivation, standard normal variate (SNV) and multiplicative scatter correction (MSC). New mathematical treatments, such as orthogonal signal correction (OSC) and direct orthogonal signal correction (DOSC), have been developed to minimize the variability unrelated to the response in spectral data. In this work, these two new pre-processing methods were applied to a set of roasted coffee NIR spectra. A separate calibration model was developed to quantify the ash content and lipids in roasted coffee samples by PLS regression. The results provided by these correction methods were compared to those obtained with the original data and the data corrected by derivation, SNV and MSC. For both responses, OSC and DOSC treatments gave PLS calibration models with improved prediction abilities (4.9 and 3.3% RMSEP with corrected data versus 7.1 and 8.3% RMSEP with original data, respectively).  相似文献

Mathematical models based on chemometric analyses of the coffee beverage sensory data and NIR spectra of 51 Arabica roasted coffee samples were generated aiming to predict the scores of acidity, bitterness, flavour, cleanliness, body and overall quality of coffee beverage. Partial least squares (PLS) were used to construct the models. The ordered predictor selection (OPS) algorithm was applied to select the wavelengths for the regression model of each sensory attribute in order to take only significant regions into account. The regions of the spectrum defined as important for sensory quality were closely related to the NIR spectra of pure caffeine, trigonelline, 5-caffeoylquinic acid, cellulose, coffee lipids, sucrose and casein. The NIR analyses sustained that the relationship between the sensory characteristics of the beverage and the chemical composition of the roasted grain were as listed below: 1 - the lipids and proteins were closely related to the attribute body; 2 - the caffeine and chlorogenic acids were related to bitterness; 3 - the chlorogenic acids were related to acidity and flavour; 4 - the cleanliness and overall quality were related to caffeine, trigonelline, chlorogenic acid, polysaccharides, sucrose and protein.  相似文献

This work describes the use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and chemometric techniques calibration for the classification of coffee samples from different lots and producers acquired in supermarkets and roasting industries in some Brazilian cities. Seventy-three samples of finely ground roasted coffee were acquired in the market and 91 samples of roasted ground Arabica beans were analyzed in the full NIR spectral range (800–2500 nm) using a diffuse reflectance accessory coupled to an MB160 Bomem spectrophotometer. Two classification models were constructed: Soft Independent Modeling Class Analogy (SIMCA) and PLS Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA). All findings reveal that NIR spectroscopy, coupled with either SIMCA or PLS-DA multivariate models, can be a useful tool to differentiate roasted coffee grains and to replace sensory tests.  相似文献

Volatile compounds in fifty-eight Arabica roasted coffee samples from Brazil were analyzed by SPME-GC-FID and SPME-GC-MS, and the results were compared with those from sensory evaluation. The main purpose was to investigate the relationships between the volatile compounds from roasted coffees and certain sensory attributes, including body, flavor, cleanliness and overall quality. Calibration models for each sensory attribute based on chromatographic profiles were developed by using partial least squares (PLS) regression. Discrimination of samples with different overall qualities was done by using partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA). The alignment of chromatograms was performed by the correlation optimized warping (COW) algorithm. Selection of peaks for each regression model was performed by applying the ordered predictors selection (OPS) algorithm in order to take into account only significant compounds. The results provided by the calibration models are promising and demonstrate the feasibility of using this methodology in on-line or routine applications to predict the sensory quality of unknown Brazilian Arabica coffee samples.According to the PLS-DA on chromatographic profiles of different quality samples, compounds 3-methypropanal, 2-methylfuran, furfural, furfuryl formate, 5-methyl-2-furancarboxyaldehyde, 4-ethylguaiacol, 3-methylthiophene, 2-furanmethanol acetate, 2-ethyl-3,6-dimethylpyrazine, 1-(2-furanyl)-2-butanone and three others not identified compounds can be considered as possible markers for the coffee beverage overall quality.  相似文献

The non-linear regression technique known as alternating conditional expectations (ACE) method is only applicable when the number of objects available for calibration is considerably greater than the number of considered predictors. Alternating conditional expectations regression with selection of significant predictors by genetic algorithms (GA-ACE), the non-linear regression technique presented here, is based on the ACE algorithm but introducing several modifications to resolve the applicability limitations of the original ACE method, thus facilitating the practical implementation of a very interesting calibration tool. In order to overcome the lack of reliability displayed by the original ACE algorithm when working on data sets characterized by a too large number of variables and prior to the development of the non-linear regression model, GA-ACE applies genetic algorithms as a variable selection technique to select a reduced subset of significant predictors able to accurately model and predict a considered variable response. Furthermore, GA-ACE actually provides two alternative application approaches, since it allows either the performance of prior data compression computing a number of principal components to be subsequently subjected to GA-selection, or working directly on original variables. In this study, GA-ACE was applied to two real calibration problems, with a very low observation/variable ratio (NIR data), and the results were compared with those obtained by several linear regression techniques usually employed. When using the GA-ACE non-linear method, notably improved regression models were developed for the two response variables modeled, with root mean square errors of the residuals in external prediction (RMSEP) equal to 11.51 and 6.03% for moisture and lipid contents of roasted coffee samples, respectively. The improvement achieved by applying the new non-linear method introduced is even more remarkable taking into account the results obtained with the best performance linear method (IPW-PLS) applied to predict the studied responses (14.61 and 7.74% RMSEP, respectively).  相似文献

A calibration transfer method for near-infrared (NIR) spectra based on spectral regression is proposed. Spectral regression method can reveal low dimensional manifold structure in high dimensional spectroscopic data and is suitable to transfer the NIR spectra of different instruments. A comparative study of the proposed method and piecewise direct standardization (PDS) for standardization on two benchmark NIR data sets is presented. Experimental results show that spectral regression method outperforms PDS and is quite competitive with PDS with background correction. When the standardization subset has sufficient samples, spectral regression method exhibits excellent performance.  相似文献

Two orthogonal signal correction methods (OSC and DOSC) were applied on a set of 83 roasted coffee NIR spectra from varied origins and varieties in order to remove information unrelated to a specific chemical response (caffeine), which was selected due to its high discriminant ability to differentiate between arabica and robusta coffee varieties. These corrected NIR spectra, as well as raw NIR spectra and three chemical quantities (caffeine, chlorogenic acids and total acidity), were used to develop separate classification models accordingly using the potential functions method as a class-modelling technique in order to evaluate their respective capacities to discriminate between coffee varieties and the influence of these pre-processing methods on the classification of the coffee samples into their corresponding variety class. The transformation of roasted coffee NIR spectra by means of an orthogonal signal correction method, taking into account in this correction a chemical response closely related to the sample origin, prompted a notable improvement in the specificity of the constructed classification models.  相似文献

Wastes and by-products of the onion-processing industry pose an increasing disposal and environmental problem and represent a loss of valuable sources of nutrients. The present study focused on the production of vinegar from worthless onions as a potential valorisation route which could provide a viable solution to multiple disposal and environmental problems, simultaneously offering the possibility of converting waste materials into a useful food-grade product and of exploiting the unique properties and health benefits of onions. This study deals specifically with the second and definitive step of the onion vinegar production process: the efficient production of vinegar from onion waste by transforming onion ethanol, previously produced by alcoholic fermentation, into acetic acid via acetic fermentation. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), coupled with multivariate calibration methods, has been used to monitor the concentrations of both substrates and products in acetic fermentation. Separate partial least squares (PLS) regression models, correlating NIR spectral data of fermentation samples with each kinetic parameter studied, were developed. Wavelength selection was also performed applying the iterative predictor weighting–PLS (IPW-PLS) method in order to only consider significant spectral features in each model development to improve the quality of the final models constructed. Biomass, substrate (ethanol) and product (acetic acid) concentration were predicted in the acetic fermentation of onion alcohol with high accuracy using IPW-PLS models with a root-mean-square error of the residuals in external prediction (RMSEP) lower than 2.5% for both ethanol and acetic acid, and an RMSEP of 6.1% for total biomass concentration (a very satisfactory result considering the relatively low precision and accuracy associated with the reference method used for determining the latter). Thus, the simple and reliable calibration models proposed in this study suggest that they could be implemented in routine applications to monitor and predict the key species involved in the acetic fermentation of onion alcohol, allowing the onion vinegar production process to be controlled in real time.  相似文献

Consensus methods have presented promising tools for improving the reliability of quantitative models in near-infrared(NIR) spectroscopic analysis.A strategy for improving the performance of consensus methods in multivariate calibration of NIR spectra is proposed. In the approach,a subset of non-collinear variables is generated using successive projections algorithm(SPA) for each variable in the reduced spectra by uninformative variables elimination(UVE).Then sub-models are built using the variable subsets and the calibration subsets determined by Monte Carlo(MC) re-sampling,and the sub-model that produces minimal error in cross validation is selected as a member model. With repetition of the MC re-sampling,a series of member models are built and a consensus model is achieved by averaging all the member models.Since member models are built with the best variable subset and the randomly selected calibration subset, both the quality and the diversity of the member models are insured for the consensus model. Two NIR spectral datasets of tobacco lamina are used to investigate the proposed method. The superiority of the method in both accuracy and reliability is demonstrated.  相似文献

Fourier-transform mid-infrared (FT-MIR) spectroscopy, combined with partial least-squares (PLS) regression and IPW as feature selection method, was used to develop reduced-spectrum calibration models based on a few IR bands to provide near-real-time predictions of two key parameters for the characterization of finished red wines, which are essential from a quality assurance standpoint: total and volatile acidity. Separate PLS calibration models, correlating IR data (only considering those regions showing a high signal to noise ratio) with each response studied, were developed. Wavenumber selection was also performed applying IPW-PLS to take into account only significant predictors, in an attempt to improve the quality of the final models constructed. Using both PLS and IPW-PLS regression, prediction of the two responses modelled was performed with very high reliability, with RMSECV and RMSEP values on the order of 1% (comparable in terms of accuracy to the results provided by the respective reference analysis methods). An important advantage derived from the application of the IPW-PLS method had to do with the low number of original variables needed for modelling both total acidity (22 significant wavenumbers) and volatile acidity (only 11 selected predictor variables), in such a way that variable selection contributed to enhance the stability and parsimony properties of the final calibration models. The high quality of the calibration models proposed encourages the feasibility of implementing them as a fast and reliable tool in routine analysis for the determination of critical parameters for wine quality.  相似文献

Sample selection is often used to improve the cost-effectiveness of near-infrared (NIR) spectral analysis. When raw NIR spectra are used, however, it is not easy to select appropriate samples, because of background interference and noise. In this paper, a novel adaptive strategy based on selection of representative NIR spectra in the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) domain is described. After pretreatment with the CWT, an extension of the Kennard–Stone (EKS) algorithm was used to adaptively select the most representative NIR spectra, which were then submitted to expensive chemical measurement and multivariate calibration. With the samples selected, a PLS model was finally built for prediction. It is of great interest to find that selection of representative samples in the CWT domain, rather than raw spectra, not only effectively eliminates background interference and noise but also further reduces the number of samples required for a good calibration, resulting in a high-quality regression model that is similar to the model obtained by use of all the samples. The results indicate that the proposed method can effectively enhance the cost-effectiveness of NIR spectral analysis. The strategy proposed here can also be applied to different analytical data for multivariate calibration.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to establish a rapid quality assessment method for Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (RGM) using near-infrared (NIR) spectra combined with chemometric analysis. The NIR spectra were acquired using an integrating sphere diffuse reflectance module, using air as the reference. Capillary electrophoresis (CE) analyses were performed on a model P/ACE MDQ Plus system. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis qualitative model was developed to distinguish different species of RGM samples, and the prediction accuracy for all samples was 91%. The CE response values at each retention time were predicted by building a partial least squares regression (PLSR) calibration model with the CE data set as the Y matrix and the NIR spectra data set as the X matrix. The converted CE fingerprints basically match the real ones, and the six main peaks can be accurately predicted. Transforming NIR spectra fingerprints into the form of CE fingerprints increases its interpretability and more intuitively demonstrates the components that cause diversity among samples of different species and origins. Loganic acid, gentiopicroside, and roburic acid were considered quality indicators of RGM and calibration models were built using PLSR algorithm. The developed models gave root mean square error of prediction of 0.2592% for loganic acid, 0.5341% for gentiopicroside, and 0.0846% for roburic acid. The overall results demonstrate that the rapid quality assessment system can be used for quality control of RGM.  相似文献

Near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy have been compared and evaluated for the determination of the distillation property of kerosene with the use of partial least squares (PLS) regression. Since kerosene is a complex mixture of similar hydrocarbons, both spectroscopic methods will be best evaluated with this complex sample matrix. PLS calibration models for each percent recovery temperature have been developed by using both NIR and MIR spectra without spectral pretreatment. Both methods have shown good correlation with the corresponding reference method, however NIR provided better calibration performance over MIR. To rationalize the improved calibration performance of NIR, spectra of the same kerosene sample were continuously collected and the corresponding spectral reproducibility was evaluated. The greater spectral reproducibility including signal-to-noise ratio of NIR led to the improved calibration performance, even though MIR spectroscopy provided more qualitative spectral information. The reproducibility of measurement, signal-to-noise ratio, and richness of qualitative information should be simultaneously considered for proper selection of a spectroscopic method for quantitative analysis.  相似文献

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) models built on a particular instrument are often invalid on other instruments due to spectral inconsistencies between the instruments. In the present work, global and robust NIR calibration models were constructed by partial least square (PLS) regression based on hybrid calibration sets, which are composed of both primary and secondary spectra. Three datasets were used as case studies. The first consisted of 72 radix scutellaria samples measured on two NIR spectrometers with known baicalin content. The second was composed of 80 corn samples measured on two instruments with known moisture, oil, and protein concentrations. The third dataset included 279 primary samples of tobacco with known nicotine content and 78 secondary samples of tobacco with known nicotine concentrations. The effect of the number of secondary spectra in the hybrid calibration sets and the methods for selecting secondary spectra on the PLS model performance were investigated by comparing the results obtained from different calibration sets. This study shows that the global and robust calibration models accurately predicted both primary and secondary samples as long as the ratios of the number of primary spectra to the number of secondary spectra were less than 22. The models performance was not influenced by the selection method of the secondary spectra. The hybrid calibration sets included the primary spectral information and also the secondary spectra; information, rendering the constructed global and robust models applicable to both primary and secondary instruments.  相似文献

Consensus modeling of combining the results of multiple independent models to produce a single prediction avoids the instability of single model. Based on the principle of consensus modeling, a consensus least squares support vector regression (LS-SVR) method for calibrating the near-infrared (NIR) spectra was proposed. In the proposed approach, NIR spectra of plant samples were firstly preprocessed using discrete wavelet transform (DWT) for filtering the spectral background and noise, then, consensus LS-SVR technique was used for building the calibration model. With an optimization of the parameters involved in the modeling, a satisfied model was achieved for predicting the content of reducing sugar in plant samples. The predicted results show that consensus LS-SVR model is more robust and reliable than the conventional partial least squares (PLS) and LS-SVR methods.  相似文献

In this present research, a spectroscopic method based on UV–Vis spectroscopy is utilized to quantify the level of corn adulteration in peaberry ground roasted coffee by chemometrics. Peaberry coffee with two types of bean processing of wet and dry-processed methods was used and intentionally adulterated by corn with a 10–50% level of adulteration. UV–Vis spectral data are obtained for aqueous samples in the range between 250 and 400 nm with a 1 nm interval. Three multivariate regression methods, including partial least squares regression (PLSR), multiple linear regression (MLR), and principal component regression (PCR), are used to predict the level of corn adulteration. The result shows that all individual regression models using individual wet and dry samples are better than that of global regression models using combined wet and dry samples. The best calibration model for individual wet and dry and combined samples is obtained for the PLSR model with a coefficient of determination in the range of 0.83–0.93 and RMSE below 6% (w/w) for calibration and validation. However, the error prediction in terms of RMSEP and bias were highly increased when the individual regression model was used to predict the level of corn adulteration with differences in the bean processing method. The obtained results demonstrate that the use of the global PLSR model is better in predicting the level of corn adulteration. The error prediction for this global model is acceptable with low RMSEP and bias for both individual and combined prediction samples. The obtained RPDp and RERp in prediction for the global PLSR model are more than two and five for individual and combined samples, respectively. The proposed method using UV–Vis spectroscopy with a global PLSR model can be applied to quantify the level of corn adulteration in peaberry ground roasted coffee with different bean processing methods.  相似文献

Near-infrared (NIR) diffuse reflectance spectra have been measured by use of a rotating drawer for pellets of 12 kinds of ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymers with vinyl acetate (VA, the comonomer) varying in the 7–44 wt % range. They are unambiguously discriminated from one another by a score plot of the principal component analysis (PCA) Factor 1 and 2, based upon the NIR spectra pretreated by multiplicative scatter correction (MSC). Principal component (PC) weight loadings for Factor 1 show that the discrimination relies largely upon bands due to the overtone and combination modes arising from the VA unit. We have found one “outlier” in the score plot and elucidated its spectral characteristics based upon PC weight loadings for Factor 2. Partial least-squares (PLS) regression has been applied to propose calibration models which predict the VA content in EVA. The models have been prepared for three kinds of pretreatment, the first derivative, the second derivative, and MSC; and four kinds of wavelength regions. The NIR spectra in the 1100–2200 nm region after the MSC treatment has given the best correlation coefficient and standard error of prediction (SEP) of 0.998 and 0.70%, respectively. The calibration models, prepared by NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy for the pellet samples, are compared with previously reported models by NIR transmission spectroscopy for the flowing molten samples, and with those by Raman spectroscopy for the pellet samples. PLS regression has also allowed us to predict melting points of the copolymers with the correlation coefficient and SEP of 0.997 and 0.78°C, respectively. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to discriminate between arabica and robusta pure coffee varieties and blends of varied varietal composition. Direct orthogonal signal correction (DOSC) pre-processing method was applied on a set of 191 roasted coffee NIR spectra from both pure varieties and blends varying the final robusta content from 0 to 60% (w/w) in order to remove information unrelated to the actual varietal composition of samples. The corrected NIR spectra, as well as raw NIR spectra, were used to develop separate classification models using the potential functions method as class-modelling technique, exploring several options more or less restrictive according to the final number of considered categories. All constructed classification models were compared to evaluate their respective qualities and to show the suitability of applying DOSC method as pre-processing step for developing improved classification models for coffee varietal identification purposes.  相似文献
