This paper aims at developing a stochastic-elastic model of a soft elastic body adhering on a wavy surface via a patch of molecular bonds. The elastic deformation of the system is modeled by using continuum contact mechanics, while the stochastic behavior of adhesive bonds is modeled by using Bell's type of exponential bond association/dissociation rates. It is found that for sufficiently small adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, the adhesion strength is insensitive to the wavelength but decreases with the amplitude of surface undulation, and that for large adhesion patch size or stress concentration index, there exist optimal values of the surface wavelength and amplitude for maximum adhesion strength.  相似文献

Cell adhesion often exhibits the clustering of the receptor–ligand bonds into discrete focal-adhesion sites near the contact edge, thus resembling a rosette shape or a contracting membrane anchored by a small number of peripheral forces. The ligands on the extracellular matrix are immobile, and the receptors in the cell plasma membrane consist of two types: high-affinity integrins (that bond to the substrate ligands and are immobile) and low-affinity integrins (that are mobile and not bonded to the ligands). Thus the adhesion energy density is proportional to the high-affinity integrin density. This paper provides a mechanistic explanation for the clustering/assembling of the receptor–ligand bonds from two main points: (1) the cellular contractile force leads to the density evolution of these two types of integrins, and results into a large high-affinity integrin density near the contact edge and (2) the front of a propagating crack into a decreasing toughness field will be unstable and wavy. From this fracture mechanics perspective, the chemomechanical equilibrium is reached when a small number of patches with large receptor–ligand bond density are anticipated to form at the cell periphery, as opposed to a uniform distribution of bonds on the entire interface. Cohesive fracture simulations show that the de-adhesion force can be significantly enhanced by this nonuniform bond density field, but the de-adhesion force anisotropy due to the substrate elastic anisotropy is significantly reduced.  相似文献

We propose a wavelet method to analyze the stochastic-elastic problem of specific adhesion between two elastic solids via ligand-receptor bond clusters, which is governed by a nonlinear integro-differential equation with a singular Cauchy kernel to describe the mean-field coupling between deformation of elastic materials and stochastic behavior of the molecular bonds. To solve this problem, Galerkin method based on a wavelet approximation scheme is adopted, and special treatment which transforms the singular Cauchy kernel into a smooth one has been proposed to avoid the cumbersome calculation of singular integrals. Numerical results demonstrate that the method is fully capable of solving the specific adhesion problems with complex nonlinear and singular equations. Based on the proposed method, investigations are performed to reveal the relation between steady-state pulling force and mean surface separation under different stress concentration indexes, which is crucial for assembling the overall constitutive relations for multicellular tumor spheroids and polymer-matrix microcomposites.  相似文献

A compressed elastic film on a compliant substrate can form wrinkles. On an elastic substrate, equilibrium and energetics set the critical condition and select the wrinkle wavelength and amplitude. On a viscous substrate, wrinkle grows over time and the kinetics selects the fastest growing wavelength. More generally, on a viscoelastic substrate, both energetics and kinetics play important roles in determining the critical condition, the growth rate, and the wavelength. This paper studies the wrinkling process of an elastic film on a viscoelastic layer, which in turn lies on a rigid substrate. The film is elastic and modeled by the nonlinear von Karman plate theory. The substrate is linear viscoelastic with a relaxation modulus typical of a cross-linked polymer. Beyond a critical stress, the film wrinkles by the out-of-plane displacement but remains bonded to the substrate. This study considers plane strain wrinkling and neglects the in-plane displacement. A classification of the wrinkling behavior is made based on the critical conditions at the elastic limits, the glassy and rubbery states of the viscoelastic substrate. Linear perturbation analyses are conducted to reveal the kinetics of wrinkling in films subjected to intermediate and large compressive stresses. It is shown that, depending on the stress level, the growth of wrinkles at the initial stage can be exponential, accelerating, linear, or decelerating. In all cases, the wrinkle amplitude saturates at an equilibrium state after a long time. Subsequently, both amplitude and wavelength of the wrinkle evolve, but the process is kinetically constrained and slow compared to the initial growth.  相似文献

A destabilization by wind stress of a homogeneous visco-elastic ice layer of infinite horizontal extent and finite thickness floating on a water layer of finite depth is studied. The water is assumed to be weakly compressible; the viscous dissipation in the water layer is shown to be negligible compared to that in the ice layer. In the model, we assume that a homogeneous wind shear stress is applied to the upper surface of the ice layer at near field and the compression within the ice layer is fixed below the maximum admissible value, i.e. below the value above which ice can no longer be treated as an elastic material. The effect of viscosity is shown to stabilize the acoustic mode and all the unstable seismic modes that in a purely elastic model, treated by Brevdo and Il'ichev [Brevdo, L., Il'ichev, A., 2001. Multi-modal destabilization of a floating ice layer by wind stress. Cold Reg. Sci. Technol. 33, 77–89], possess unbounded growth rates for a growing wave number. The buckling mode is unstable in the domain of parameters considered. In all the cases treated, the model is marginally absolutely stable. The localized unstable disturbances propagate against the wind. The spatially amplifying waves in the model amplify in the direction opposite to the wind direction. The stability results are well approximated by those in a Kirchoff–Love thin ice plate model.  相似文献

In connection with the successful experiments of Kramer [l, 2] on models sheathed by flexible coverings, attempts have been made to explain theoretically the effect of boundary deformation on the position of the point of stability loss in the boundary layer. Korotkin [3] examined the stability of a plane laminar boundary layer on an elastic surface under the assumption of a linear connection between the pressure perturbation and the normal deformation of the surface. Benjamin [4] and Landahl [5] investigated the stability of the laminar boundary layer on a membrane type surface under the assumption that the physical characteristics of the surface depend on the perturbing flow wavelength. In the following we examine stability of Blasius flow on a membrane type surface whose physical characteristics are constant along the length.Translated from Zhurnal Prikladnoi Mekhaniki i Tekhnicheskoi Fiziki, vol. 10, no. 6, pp. 52–56, November–December, 1969.  相似文献

The authors develop a numerical procedure to analyze the adhesive contact between a soft elastic layer and a rough rigid substrate. The solution of the problem, which belongs to the class of the free boundary problems, is obtained by calculating the Green's function which links the pressure distribution to the normal displacements at the interface. The problem is then formulated in the form of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind with a logarithmic kernel, and the boundaries of the contact area are calculated by requiring that the energy of the system is stationary. The methodology is relatively simple and easy to implement in a numerical code. It has been utilized to analyze the adhesive properties of a confined layer in contact with a wavy rigid substrate as a function of thickness, applied stress or penetration. It is shown that reducing the thickness of the slab reduces the effective energy of adhesion, i.e. the work needed to separate the bodies, but nevertheless increases the adherence force between the slab and the substrate. However, thinning the slab also increases the confinement of the system and therefore increases the negative hydrostatic pressure in the layer. This, in turn, may produce cavitation. When this happens the rupture of the adhesive bond does not occur through interfacial crack propagation but, by the growth of new interfacial voids or cavities.  相似文献

The contact problem of indentation of a pair of rigid punches with plane bases connected by an elastic beam into the boundary of an elastic half-plane is considered under the conditions of plane strain state. The external load is generated by lumped forces applied to the punches and a uniformly distributed normal load acting on the beam.It is assumed that the contact between the punch and the elastic half-plane can be described by L. A. Galin’s statement, i.e., it is assumed that the adhesion acts in the interior part of each of the contact regions and the tangential stresses obeying the Coulomb law act on their boundaries. With the symmetry taken into account, the problem is stated only for a single punch, and solving this problem is reduced to a system of four singular integral equations for the tangential and normal stresses in the adhesion region and the contact pressure in the sliding zones. The solution of the constitutive system together with three conditions of equilibrium of the system of punches connected by a beam is constructed by direct numerical integration by the method of mechanical quadratures. As a result of the numerical analysis, the contact stress distribution functions were constructed and the values of the sliding zones and the punch rotation angle were determined for various values of the geometric, elastic, and force characteristics.

A flat, compressed elastic film on a viscous layer is unstable. The film can form wrinkles to reduce the elastic energy. In this paper, we are interested in the two-dimensional models for thin films bonded to a viscous layer and in particular we focus on generic instabilities evidenced in this context by Suo and coworkers [Huang, Z., Hong, W., Suo, Z., 2005. Non linear analyses of wrinkles in a film bonded to a compliant substrate. J. Mech. Phys. Solids 53, 2101–2118; Lo, Y.H., 1991. New approach to grow pseudomorphic structures over the critical thickness. Appl. Phys. Lett. 59, 2311–2320]. We present a rigorous linear perturbation analysis for anisotropic materials, that allows the prediction of both the orientation of the corrugations of the thin film, and the wavelength that maximize the growth velocity. Finally, we compare our theoretical estimates to experimental results for a In0.65Ga0.35As alloy constraint to InP.  相似文献

The wrinkling of a stiff thin film bonded on a soft elastic layer and subjected to an applied or residual compressive stress is investigated in the present paper. A three-dimensional theoretical model is presented to predict the buckling and postbuckling behavior of the film. We obtained the analytical solutions for the critical buckling condition and the postbuckling morphology of the film. The effects of the thicknesses and elastic properties of the film and the soft layer on the characteristic wrinkling wavelength are examined. It is found that the critical wrinkling condition of the thin film is sensitive to the compressibility and thickness of the soft layer, and its wrinkling amplitude depends on the magnitude of the applied or residual in-plane stress. The bonding condition between the soft layer and the rigid substrate has a considerable influence on the buckling of the thin film, and the relative sliding at the interface tends to destabilize the system.  相似文献

A flat, compressed elastic film on a viscous layer is unstable. The film can form wrinkles to reduce the elastic energy. A linear perturbation analysis is performed to determine the critical wave number and the growth rate of the unstable modes. While the viscous layer has no effect on the critical wave number, its viscosity and thickness set the time scale for the growth of the perturbations. The fastest growing wave number and the corresponding growth rate are obtained as functions of the compressive strain and the thickness ratio between the viscous layer and the elastic film. The present analysis is valid for all thickness range of the viscous layer. In the limits of infinitely thick and thin viscous layers, the results reduce to those obtained in the previous studies.  相似文献

When the thermally induced stress in a shrinking pavement layer reaches the tensile strength of asphalt, regularly spaced thermal cracks form across the width of the pavement. A one-dimensional analytical solution for the stress distribution in a thermally shrinking elastic pavement layer placed on an elastoplastic, cohesive–frictional base is developed and validated by comparison with a 2D numerical solution. From the analytical model, a prediction of a length parameter that provides bounds on the thermal crack spacing is obtained. Predicted bounds on crack spacing are validated by comparison with field observations. It is demonstrated that the proposed formulation can also be applied to estimate the average crack density observed in thin ceramic films subjected to the application of an axial strain; in the latter system, the crack spacing is six decades smaller than that observed in pavement systems.  相似文献

A modified version of the virtual internal bond model (VIB) is presented. This involves the introduction of a R-bond restricting the relative rotation freedom of pairwise mass particle. Such a modification allows the VIB model to consider arbitrary values of the Poisson ratio. A linear elastic cohesive law considering both the R-bond and L-bond are assumed. The constitutive relationship is derived using the Cauchy–Born rules. The derived constitutive associates the bond stiffness with the Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio of materials. This gives the bond stiffness in terms of the Young’s modulus and Poisson ratio of materials. The modified VIB model is then used to analyze the tensile crack behavior. In contrast to the cohesive stress method, the deformation-governed concept will be used. The local materials failure is assumed to coincide with the reduction of the bond density due to the local deformation rather than by the local cohesive stress. A phenomenological relationship between the bond density and the deformation is established. The criterion which is applied to determined crack initiation and propagation is built into the constitutive model. As an example, the method is used to study the crack initiation and propagation behavior under tensile loading.  相似文献

Based on the mechanical experimental results of methane hydrate (MH), a bond contact model considering the rate-dependency of MH is proposed. A CFD–DEM scheme considering fluid compressibility is used to simulate a series of undrained cyclic shear tests of numerical methane-hydrate-bearing sediment (MHBS) samples. The dynamic behavior, including stress–strain relationship, dynamic shear modulus, and damping ratio, is investigated. In addition, the force chains, contact fabric and averaged pure rotation rate (APR) are examined to investigate the relationships between micromechanical variables and macromechanical responses in the DEM MH samples. The effects of temperature, confining pressure and MH saturation are also analyzed. Due to the micro-structural strengthening by the MH bonds, no obvious change in microscopic quantities is observed, and the samples remain at the elastic stage under the applied low-shear stress level. When confining pressure and MH saturation increase, the dynamic elastic modulus increases, while the damping ratio decreases. An increasing temperature (leading to weakening of MH bonds) can lower the dynamic elastic modulus, but has almost no impact on the damping ratio. On the contrary, an increasing cyclic shear stress level lowers the damping ratio, but has almost no effect on the dynamic elastic modulus.  相似文献

One considers a planar tunnel-crack embedded in an infinite isotropic brittle solid and loaded in mode 2+3 through some uniform shear remote loading. The crack front is slightly perturbed within the crack plane, from its rectilinear configuration. Part I of this work investigates the two following questions: Is there a wavy “bifurcated” configuration of the front for which the energy release rate is uniform along it? Will any given perturbation decay or grow during propagation? To address these problems, the distribution of the stress intensity factors (SIF) and the energy release rate along the perturbed front is derived using Bueckner–Rice's weight function theory. A “critical” sinusoidal bifurcated configuration of the front is found; both its wavelength and the “phase difference” between the fore and rear parts of the front depend upon the ratio of the initial (prior to perturbation of the front) mode 2 and 3 SIF. Also, it is shown that the straight configuration of the front is stable versus perturbations with wavelength smaller than the critical one but unstable versus perturbations with wavelength larger than it. This conclusion is similar to those derived by Gao and Rice and the authors for analogous problems.  相似文献

Only two macroscopic parameters are needed to describe the mechanical properties of linear elastic solids, i.e. the Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus. Correspondingly, there should be two microscopic parameters to determine the mechanical properties of material if the macroscopic mechanical properties of linear elastic solids are derived from the microscopic level. Enlightened by this idea, a multiscale mechanical model for material, the virtual multi-dimensional internal bonds (VMIB) model, is proposed by incorporating a shear bond into the virtual internal bond (VIB) model. By this modification, the VMIB model associates the macro mechanical properties of material with the microscopic mechanical properties of discrete structure and the corresponding relationship between micro and macro parameters is derived. The tensor quality of the energy density function, which contains coordinate vector, is mathematically proved. Prom the point of view of VMIB, the macroscopic nonlinear behaviors of material could be attributed to the evolution of virtual bond distribution density induced by the imposed deformation. With this theoretical hypothesis, as an application example, a uniaxial compressive failure of brittle material is simulated. Good agreement between the experimental results and the simulated ones is found.  相似文献
