With the advent of synchrotron radiation, the photoemission techniques were extended to a continuous range of excitation energies in the far ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions, adding tremendously to the usefulness of photoemission as a probe of the electronic structure of materials. In this paper, we discuss the application of photoelectron spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation to the studies of oxygen chemisorption/oxidation of Si surfaces, metal overlayers on III-V semiconductor surfaces, chemisorption on transition metal surfaces, and the surface electronic structure of CuNi alloys.  相似文献

A new cluster time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) was developed using a size-selected gas cluster ion as a projectile. Since a large gas cluster ion can generate many low-energy constituent atoms in a collision with the surface, it causes multiple and ultra low-energy sputtering. The mean kinetic energy of constituent atoms is provided by dividing the acceleration energy of the gas cluster ion by the number of constituent atoms. Therefore, the sputtering can be controlled to minimize the decomposition of sample molecules and substrate material by precisely adjusting the number of constituent atoms (the cluster size) and/or acceleration energy of the gas cluster ion. The cluster size was selected on the basis of the time-of-flight method using two ion deflectors attached along the ion-beam line. A high resolution of 11.7 was achieved for the cluster size/size width (MM) of Ar-cluster ions.  相似文献

Atomic oxygen has been studied using angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) and constant-ionic-state (CIS) measurements using radiation from the Elettra synchrotron as the photon source. Relative partial photoionization cross-sections and angular distributions for the O+(4S) ← O(3P) and O+(2D) ← O(3P) ionizations have been measured as a function of photon energy from threshold (13.6 eV) to 19.0 eV. Comparison of the results obtained with recent experimental work performed at lower resolution reveals a number of differences and comparison with results of recent calculations shows the need for the inclusion of coupling intermediate between the j-j and L-S limits in future calculations of photoionization cross-sections and angular distributions. This work has demonstrated the feasibility of and results to be expected from angle resolved PES and CIS measurements on reactive intermediates at Elettra, a third-generation synchrotron source, and further studies on small molecular radicals are proposed.  相似文献

Up to now, storage rings have been used as sources of radiation on the X-ray and the u.v. part of the spectrum. Synchrotron radiation time structure is becoming a common tool for studying dynamic properties of materials. The main limitation is often the wide time domain the user would like to access with pump–probe experiments. In order to perform photoelectron spectroscopy experiments over time scales from milliseconds to picoseconds it is mandatory to measure the time at which each measured photoelectron was created. For this reason the usual CCD camera‐based two‐dimensional detection of electron energy analyzers has been replaced by a new delay‐line detector adapted to the time structure of the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation source. The new two‐dimensional delay‐line detector has a time resolution of 5 ns and was installed on a Scienta SES 2002 electron energy analyzer. The first application has been to characterize the time of flight of the photoemitted electrons as a function of their kinetic energy and the selected pass energy. By repeating the experiment as a function of the available pass energy and of the kinetic energy, a complete characterization of the analyzer behaviour in the time domain has been obtained. Even for kinetic energies as low as 10 eV at 2 eV pass energy, the time spread of the detected electrons is lower than 140 ns. These results and the time structure of the SOLEIL filling modes assure the possibility of performing pump–probe photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with the time resolution given by the SOLEIL pulse width, the best performance of the beamline and of the experimental station.  相似文献

The energy dependence of electron inelastic scattering mean-free-paths (mfp's) has been measured for thin films of Au, Ag and Mg for energies up to 150 eV by the overlayer method using synchrotron radiation photoemission. After the initial sharp drop in mfp at low energies (not seen in our data for Mg) mfp's for all three materials remain almost constant over the remaining range of kinetic energy. Some of the essentials of this technique are discussed; in particular the choice of substrate material, overlayer growth mechanisms and geometry of electron spectrometer are considered in detail. Increases in the metal-related 2p emission on oxidation of films of Mg and Al indicate that the mfp in the oxides is typically at least twice as great as in the metal and this ratio is energy-dependent. The dangers of using the “universal curve” of mfp versus energy are highlighted by this work.  相似文献

In vascular diseases, the involvement of small vessels can be very crucial physiologically. Morphological changes of vasculature and alterations may be promising characteristic criteria for investigating disease progression and for evaluating therapeutic effects. Visualization of microvasculatures is an important step in understanding the mechanism of early vessel disorders and developing effective therapeutic strategies. However, the microvessels involved are beyond the detection limit of conventional angiography, i.e. 200 µm. Thus, faster and higher‐resolution imaging technologies are desired to capture the early anatomical structure changes of vasculatures in study of the disease. A new angiography system, synchrotron radiation microangiography, has been developed in this study. It allows for enhanced sensitivity to contrast agents and superior image quality in spatial resolution. Iodine and barium sulfate were used as blood vessel contrast agents. Physiological features of whole‐body mouse microvasculature were investigated using synchrotron radiation for the first time. The intracranial vascular network and other blood vessels were observed clearly, and the related anatomy and vessel diameters were studied. Dynamic angiography in mouse brain was performed with a high spatial image resolution of around 20–30 µm. Future research will focus on the development of novel specific targeting contrast agents for blood vessel imaging in vivo with a long half‐life and fewer side effects.  相似文献

A compact high resolution (.002 cm–1) vacuum Fourier transform spectrometer for use with far infrared synchrotron radiation was constructed at the National Synchrotron Light Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The spectrometer may be operated using a gas cell of path length of 2 m and a He cooled bolometer with NEP of 10–13. By using continuous deposition of metal surfaces or a continuous scrape technique the ultraviolet photoelectron spectra of clean polycrystalline Zn, Cd, Sn and Pb have been obtained using spectrometers originally designed for gas-phase work. Spectra are calibrated with respect to an internal gas-phase standard. A study of the oxidation of lead is presented to illustrate the applicability of these techniques to adsorption studies. A second oxide in addition to the established orthorhombic form of PbO is observed for low O2 doses.  相似文献

Doping with transition metal ions in TiO2 has been found effective to modify the electronic structure of TiO2 nanoparticles. Application of synchrotron radiation photoelectron spectroscopy (SRPES) to Nd-doped TiO2 nanoparticles revealed that there existed different peak positions and structure with different doping concentration in the valence band spectra. From the onset of valence band spectrum, it was observed that doping Nd ions alters the electronic structure and makes the band gap of TiO2 narrow.  相似文献
