This revised version of Abhyankar's old lecture notes contains the original proof of the Galois case of then-variable Jacobian problem. They also contain proofs for some cases of the 2-variable Jacobian, including the two characteristic pairs case. In addition, proofs of some of the well-known formulas enunciated by Abhyankar are actually written down. These include the Taylor Resultant Formula and the Semigroup Conductor formula for plane curves. The notes are also meant to provide inspiration for applying the expansion theoretic techniques to the Jacobian problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we provide a Taylor formula with integral remainder in the setting of homogeneous groups in the sense of Folland and Stein (Hardy spaces on homogeneous groups. Mathematical notes, vol 28. Princeton University Press, Princeton, 1982). This formula allows us to give a simplified proof of the so-called ‘Taylor inequality’. As a by-product, we furnish an explicit expression for the relevant Taylor polynomials. Applications are provided. Among others, it is given a sufficient condition for the real-analiticity of a function whose higher order derivatives (in the sense of the Lie algebra) satisfy a suitable growth condition. Moreover, we prove the ‘L-harmonicity’ of the Taylor polynomials related to a ‘L-harmonic’ function, when L is a general homogenous left-invariant differential operator on a homogeneous group. (This result is one of the ingredients for obtaining Schauder estimates related to L).  相似文献

Extending recent work of others, we provide effective bounds on the family of all elliptic curves and one-parameter families of elliptic curves modulo p (for p prime tending to infinity) obeying the Sato-Tate law. We present two methods of proof. Both use the framework of Murty and Sinha (2009) [MS]; the first involves only knowledge of the moments of the Fourier coefficients of the L-functions and combinatorics, and saves a logarithm, while the second requires a Sato-Tate law. Our purpose is to illustrate how the caliber of the result depends on the error terms of the inputs and what combinatorics must be done.

In this paper, we report a teaching experiment regarding the theory of polynomial approximations at the university mathematics teaching in Sweden. The experiment was designed by applying Variation theory and by using the free dynamic mathematics software GeoGebra. The aim of this study was to investigate if the technology-assisted teaching of Taylor polynomials compared with traditional way of work at the university level can support the teaching and learning of mathematical concepts and ideas. An engineering student group (n = 19) was taught Taylor polynomials with the assistance of GeoGebra while a control group (n = 18) was taught in a traditional way. The data were gathered by video recording of the lectures, by doing a post-test concerning Taylor polynomials in both groups and by giving one question regarding Taylor polynomials at the final exam for the course in Real Analysis in one variable. In the analysis of the lectures, we found Variation theory combined with GeoGebra to be a potentially powerful tool for revealing some critical aspects of Taylor Polynomials. Furthermore, the research results indicated that applying Variation theory, when planning the technology-assisted teaching, supported and enriched students’ learning opportunities in the study group compared with the control group.  相似文献

Following ideas of Özbağcı–Stipsicz, a proof based on contact Dehn surgery is given of Eliashberg's concave filling theorem for contact 3-manifolds. This survey grew out of notes accompanying a cycle of lectures at the workshop Modern Trends in Gromov–Witten Theory, in Hannover. The lectures are devoted to interactions between Hurwitz theory and Gromov–Witten theory, with a particular eye to the contributions made to the understanding of the Double Ramification Cycle, a cycle in the moduli space of curves that compactifies the double Hurwitz locus. We explore the algebro-combinatorial properties of single and double Hurwitz numbers, and the connections with intersection theoretic problems on appropriate moduli spaces. We survey several results by many groups of people on the subject, but, perhaps more importantly, collect a number of conjectures and problems which are still open.  相似文献

Taylor series based finite difference approximations of derivatives of a function have already been presented in closed forms, with explicit formulas for their coefficients. However, those formulas were not derived mathematically and were based on observation of numerical results. In this paper, we provide a mathematical proof of those formulas by deriving them mathematically from the Taylor series.  相似文献

We present an overview of the development of the irrational numbers due to Karl Weierstrass. This construction was first presented during lectures in the 1860s in Berlin. Weierstrass never published his construction. Several of his students (Kossak, Horwitz, von Dantscher and Pincherle, to name a few) gave accounts in lecture notes from the courses. This paper presents a short, simple, and general proof showing that the control polygons generated by subdivision and degree elevation converge to the underlying splines, box-splines, or multivariate Bézier polynomials, respectively. The proof is based only on a Taylor expansion. Then the results are carried over to rational curves and surfaces. Finally, an even shorter but as simple proof is presented for the fact that subdivided Bézier polygons converge to the corresponding curve.  相似文献

In appropriate function space settings, it is proved that the Fourier, Taylor, and Laurent series projections are minimal in all Lp norms (1 p ∞). This result unifies and extends known results for the Fourier, Taylor, and Laurent projections in L and for the Fourier projection in L1. Results of Shahidi on the analytic continuation of certain L-functions have been used by Serre to obtain partial information on the distribution of Sato-Tate angles of the Ramanujan function. Employing the Christoffel numbers associated to the orthogonal polynomials used by Serre we derive upper bounds on the lower density of primes with small angles. We also make effective his lower bounds on the upper density of such primes. Assuming that more analytic information is available, we sharpen similar estimates of Ram Murty, and, using the Christoffel numbers attached to the second order Chebyshev polynomials, derive general bounds on the discrepancy between the empirical angles distribution and the Sato-Tate distribution.  相似文献
