Summary Sampling and sample preparation are known to carry large, but typically unknown uncertainty contributions to the final analytical data and there is a lack of qualitative and quantitative data on the comparability of results achieved by different sampling methods. To this end an intercomparison exercise was carried out to compare different methods for the collection of suspended material used for the monitoring of environmental radioactivity in freshwater bodies.This paper presents the results of this intercomparison exercise in which “in situ”particulate sampling devices were compared in field exercises performed in the Kiev Reservoir (Ukraine) and in the Po River (Italy). The main criterion for this intercomparison was the agreement among the137Cs activity concentrations associated with the suspended particles expressed as Bq. g-1and among the (C/N) molar ratios measured on the suspended particles. In addition, an estimate of the uncertainties associated with each measuring method has been performed.  相似文献

A novel graphical method (‘Kiri plots’) for the presentation of proficiency test exercise results is presented. The Kiri plot visualises the evaluation of the proficiency test results based on three statistical tests (the z score, the zeta score and the relative uncertainty outlier test) by defining six zones including a central “in agreement” zone.  相似文献

Sampling and sample preparation/processing are known to carry large, but typically unknown uncertainty contribution to the final analytical data and there is a lack of qualitative and quantitative data on the comparability of results achieved by the different sampling methods. To this end, an intercomparison programme was founded by the European Commission, in which different institutions participated using their own ”in-situ” methods (”ANPA”, ”EDF” and ”MIDIYA”) for collection of water and suspended material in freshwater bodies. The main criterion for this intercomparison was the agreement among the 137Cs activity concentrations in the dissolved phase (Bq l–1), those associated with the suspended particles (Bq g–1) and the concentrations of total suspended material (TSM) in the water body (mg l–1). The results show that the sampling systems provide TSM concentration results with low accuracy; on the contrary, they are recommended for the determination of 137Cs activity concentration in the dissolved phase. Concerning the determination of radiocaesium activity concentration in the suspended particles, the ”EDF” system provides the more reliable results. This paper studies changes in the matrix elements (Ump) of spin-orbit coupling between the nπ*- and ππ*-states, which are induced by the (“chair,” “bath”) distortions of the nuclear configurations of molecules. The analysis is performed for acridine molecules in which the n-pz atomic orbital (AO) of the heteroatom is directed along the C2 symmetry axis. Earlier, for molecules with a planar nuclear configuration of C2v symmetry and with the heteroatom lying on the C2 axis, we established the dependence of Ump on the symmetry of ππ*-states [Γ(ππ*)=A1 or B2]. The values of Ump differ by more than one order of magnitude; this is in line with the difference between the interconversion rate constants (Kisc; two or three orders). In this work we have found that this contrast in Ump (and, accordingly, in Kisc) is retained when the nuclear configuration of the acridine molecule is distorted to the “chair” (AC-A) configuration, although the individuality of both molecular orbital types (nσ-MO and π-MO) and states nπ* and ππ* is annihilated to a certain extent. For the “bath” (AC-B) conformation the difference in Ump considerably diminishes. Reasons for the changes in the matrix elements of spin-orbit coupling and rate constants of the S-T conversion are analyzed. The available energy level diagram is critically analyzed, and a slightly different diagam as well as a scheme of nonradiating deactivation of acridine are suggested. L. Ya. Correspondence Factor Analysis is a multivariate technique that may be applied to any type of data. The principal advantage of this method is related to its simultaneous representation of subjects and variables on the same factorial axis. Two dimensional graphs may be drawn and offer a strong aid in the interpretation of the results. We compare the analytical performance of a modern quadrupole-based ICP-MS (“X-Series”, Thermo-Electron, Winsford, UK) with a single-collector double-focusing sector-field ICP-MS (“Axiom”, VG Elemental, Winsford, UK) for uranium isotopic measurements in environmental samples. We focus on the precision and accuracy obtained with both instruments for the 235U/238U isotopic ratios and on the abundance sensitivity that is a key parameter for low 236U/238U isotopic ratios measurements. We observe that isotopic measurements are more precise accurate with the “X-Series” than with the “Axiom”. Besides, we demonstrate that the “Axiom’s” higher abundance sensitivity limits its capability to measure 236U/238U ratio below a few ppm.  相似文献

The problem of stabilization of linear mercury clusters with acceptor ligands coordinated along the symmetry axis of the cluster is discussed in terms of the MNDO method. It is shown that stable four-membered rings Hg2Cl2 may be formed. It is proposed that the structure of linear mercury clusters with side coordination of ligands be described as the result of “polymerization” of short stable linear molecules XHgnX (n=1, 2) and HgX 2 1− , HgX 3 1− ions with accepting terminal groups.  Compositional characterization of metal-DLC (metal-containing diamond-like carbon) hard coatings is carried out by (WDS)-EPMA and MCs+-SIMS. EPMA enables accurate (± 5% relative) quantitative analysis including minor concentrations (0.1–10 at%) of N, O and Ar. Under conditions of “near-surface” EPMA (E0 < 10 keV) the influence of surface oxide films on “pure” metal standards may be a limiting factor in respect of accuracy. Depth profiling of sufficiently “thick” layered structures (film thickness ≥ 2 μm) is carried out by EPMA-line scans along mechanically prepared bevels. The depth resolution is about 0.2 μm. SIMS in the MCs+-mode enables high resolution (< 20 nm) depth profiling of metal-DLC layered structures including the determination of H (1–20 at%). MCs+-SIMS, i.e. employing Cs+ primary ions and monitoring MCs+ molecular secondary ions (M is the element of interest) is presented as a promising route towards sufficiently accurate (10–20%) SIMS-quantification. Matrix-independent relative sensitivity factors for MCs+-SIMS are derived from homogeneous coating materials defined by EPMA. EPMA proves to be also useful to detect problems related to SIMS of Ar in metal-DLC materials. The combination EPMA-SIMS is demonstrated as an effective analytical strategy for quality control in industrial production and to support the development of metal DLC layered structures with optimum tribological properties.  相似文献

This paper reports the deposition of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films on Si <100>, using a low energy (1.45 kJ) dense plasma focus assisted sputtering of graphite insert at the tip of the tapered anode. The substrates are placed in front of the anode at different axial and angular positions and are exposed to multiple focus shots. The information regarding the DLC structure is acquired by using Raman spectroscopy. The spectra are characterized by two broad bands known as “G-band” and “D-band”. The results point towards the formation of DLC films with both sp3 (diamond like) and sp2 (graphite like) domains. In X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, no additional peak is observed except a peak at 2θ = 69° which corresponds to the silicon (Si) substrate. The intensity of Si peak is reduced after treatment indicating the deposition of amorphous carbon. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results demonstrate that the smoothness of the film increases with increasing the substrate angular positions with respect to the anode axis. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis reveals that the films deposited at lower axial and angular positions are thicker which is complemented by the cross-sectional views of the films.  相似文献

 In this overview I discuss recent advances as well as outstanding issues in reduced dimensionality quantum approaches to reactive scattering. “Reduced dimensionality” in the present context signifies treating a subset of all degrees of freedom (the most strongly coupled ones) by rigorous quantum methods and treating the remaining (weakly coupled) degrees of freedom by a variety of approximate methods, ranging from simple, so-called energy shifts to more elaborate adiabatic treatments. The most widely used example of this approach is termed “J-shifting”, and this overview will concentrate on this method and discuss its application and generalization to both “direct” and “complex” reactions, exemplified by O(3P) + HCl and O(1D) + HCl, respectively. In addition, for O(3P) + HCl, resonances in the tunneling region, due to van der Waals wells, are discussed and their challenge to reduced dimensionality methods is stressed. Another new aspect of the reduced dimensionality treatment of polyatomic reactions is the need to describe anharmonicity in a consistent fashion. This is exemplified by the H + CH4 reaction. A novel method for the electrochemical synthesis of covellite (CuS) nanoparticles (NPs) in aqueous phase was developed. In this experiment, thioglycerol (TG) is used as the catalyst for the hydrolysis of sodium thiosulfate, the sulfur source for the synthesis of CuS. Cu foil, which acts as the sacrificing anode, is oxidized to Cu2+ by applying a potential of 0.5 V while OH- was produced on the cathode surface at the same time. The production of OH- facilitates the reaction between Cu2+ and thiosulfate under the catalysis of TG. The evolution of hydrogen bubbles effectively prevents the deposition of copper sulfide on the cathode. Copper sulfide sols of “golden-brown”, and “dark-green” forms can be obtained by varying the concentration of TG. The “golden-brown” copper sulfide sols are also observed to convert to the green form with time, and the rate of this conversion process is faster at higher temperatures. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chemical analysis indicate that the “dark-green” form of product is pure hexagonal phase CuS. The obtained CuS NPs were covered by a layer of TG as suggested by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) data. The size and morphology of the particles are studied by transmission electron microscope (TEM).  相似文献

The Intercomparison Studies Program (ISP) at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL, Oak Ridge, TN USA) provides natural-matrix human urine quality-assurance/quality-control (QA/QC) samples to radiobioassay analysis laboratories. Samples are provided to these laboratories as “single-blind” or “double-blind” unknowns, spiked with radioactive-solution standards at “low” levels (e.g., 0.7–7 Bq g−1 for 3H and 0.7–7 Bq kg−1 for 90Sr). Participants use the results as a tool for self-evaluation and a measure of performance. In this paper, sample preparation and the results of testing during the years 2001–2005 for 3H and 90Sr are presented and discussed.  相似文献

Joint results of the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) experiments were the basis for the fusion enthalpy and temperature determination of the biuret (NH2CO)2NH (synthesis by-product of the urea fertilizer (NH2)2CO). Recommended values are Δm H = (26.1 ± 0.5) kJ mol−1, T m = (473.8 ± 0.4) K. The DSC method allowed for the phase diagrams of “water–biuret,” “water–urea,” “urea–biuret” binary systems to be studied; as a result, liquidus and solidus curves were precisely defined. Stoichiometry and decomposition temperature of the biuret hydrate identified, composition of the compound in “urea–biuret” system was suggested.  相似文献

Measurements of 222Rn (“radon”) in the environment are important in the geosciences and radiation-protection fields. We demonstrate here a simple laboratory-based calibration system to evaluate the efficiency of radon detectors with a reproducibility of about ±2%. The system uses a closed-loop air circulation design with 226Ra adsorbed onto MnO2-impregnated fiber as a radon source. Two RAD7 radon detectors (Durridge Co., Inc.) that were precisely calibrated at Durridge’s in-house calibration facility are used as secondary standards. By parallel analysis of the radon-enriched air within the closed loop, the test RAD7s are assigned a calibration coefficient to be applied to future measurements. We also performed a side-by-side intercomparison with two RAD7s in a high-radon natural environmental setting (limestone cave in Florida) that produced comparable results.  相似文献

The relative cumulative fission yields of 95,97,98,100Mo produced by spontaneous fission of 238U contained in Archaean zircons, were measured by sensitive thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS). The relative yields for 95,97,98,100Mo are 0.58 : 1.08 : 1.04 : 1.0, respectively. Combined with mass spectrometrically-determined 99,101,102,104Ru fission yields,1 the mass distribution from 95£A£104 can be delineated. Assuming an “absolute” fission yield of 6.1±0.4% for the cumulative fission yield at mass 97, it is possible to express the Mo and Ru relative spontaneous fission yields for 238U as “absolute” values. There is no evidence for a significant isotope anomaly at mass 98. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The “analytical power” of detection systems is investigated, considering typical arrangements in analytical terms. From N atoms of interest in a sample Z counts are drawn: Z=R N (R registration yield). Crude data ZM contain also background U generated by interferences: ZM=Z+U. Identification and separation of Z is accompanied by errors ~σMU1/2 due to imperfect distinguishability and to statistical error (σM model inherent factor). With “selectivity”=σM - (R/Rinterference)1/2 the figure of merit is G=selectivity efficiency/interference)1/2. Sample background dominating, “interference” or both “interference” and “efficiency” have to be cancelled. Present semiconductor spectrometry of low energy γ-quanta and of large rates is not very far from its limits. Further progress will be obtained by enhancement of high energy efficiency and reduction of natural background.   相似文献

A novel algorithm is proposed for the fixed-node quantum Monte Carlo (FNQMC) method.In contrast to previous procedures,its "guiding function" is not optimized prior to diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DMC) computation but synchronistically in the diffusion process The new algorithm can not only save CPU time,but also make both of the optimization and diffusion carried out according to the same sampling fashion,reaching the goal to improve each other This new optimizing procedure converges super-linearly,and thus can accelerate the particle diffusion During the diffusion process,the node of the "guiding function" changes incessantly,which is conducible to reducing the "fixed-node error" The new algorithm has been used to calculate the total energies of states X3B1 and a1A1 of CH2 as well as π-X2B1 and λ-2A1 of NH2 The singlet-triplet energy splitting (λEsT) in CH2 and π energy splitting in NH2 obtained with this present method are (45 542±1.840) and (141.644±1.589) kJ/mol,respectively The calculated  相似文献

We have examined the uptake of actinide elements Am and, Pu by different species of lichen and moss collected in two locations (Urbino, Central Italy; Alps region, North-east Italy). Plutonium and americium were separated and determined by extraction chromatography, electrodeposition and alpha-spectrometry. This paper summarizes our results with a special emphasis on the vertical profiles of these actinides in two different species of mosses. Several 1–2 cm depth sections were obtained and dated by210Pb method. A typical peak for239,240Pu and241Am was found in the very old moss species (“Sphagnum Compactum”) at a depth corresponding to the period 1960–1970 which was the period characterized by the maximum nuclear weapon tests. In a younger moss species (“Neckeria Crispa”) no peak was observed and the regression curves showed that Am is more mobile than239,240Pu and238Pu.  相似文献

In-source decay (ISD) and post-source decay (PSD) of a peptide ion ([Y6 + H]+) and a preformed ion (benzyltriphenylphosphonium, BTPP) generated by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) were investigated with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. α-Cyano-4-hydroxycinammic acid (CHCA) and 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHB) were used as matrices. For both ions, ISD yield was unaffected by delay time, indicating rapid termination of ISD. This was taken as evidence for rapid expansion cooling of hot “early” plume formed in MALDI. CHCA was hotter than DHB for [Y6 + H]+ while the matrix effect was insignificant for BTPP. The “early” plume temperature estimated utilizing previous kinetic results was 800–900 K, versus 400–500 K for “late” plume. The results support our previous finding that the temperature of peptide ions interrogated by tandem mass spectrometry was lower than most rough estimates of MALDI temperature.  相似文献
