The synthesis of two vinyl‐terminated side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing benzylideneaniline moieties as mesogenic cores was approached in two different ways: by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) with suitable mesogenic acids or by polymerizing analogous glycidyl ester or glycidyl ether derivatives. In all the conditions tested, the first approach led to materials in which the imine group was hydrolyzed. The second approach led to the desired polymers PG2a and PG2b , but only from the glycidyl ether derivatives and when the initiator was the system that combined polyiminophosphazene base t‐Bu‐P4 and 3,5‐di‐t‐butylphenol. These polymers were chemically characterized by IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies. The estimated degrees of polymerization ranged from 30 to 36. The liquid crystalline behavior of the synthesized polymers was studied by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X‐ray diffraction. Both polymers behave like liquid crystals and exhibited a single mesophase, which was recognized as a smectic C mesophase, probably with a bilayer arrangement, i.e., a smectic C2 mesophase. The crosslinking of both polymers was performed with dicumyl peroxide as initiator, which led to liquid crystalline thermosets. POM and X‐ray diffraction confirmed that the mesophase organization mantained on the crosslinked materials. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 44: 1877–1889, 2006  相似文献

New side‐chain cholesteric liquid‐crystalline elastomers containing cholesteryl 4‐allyloxybenzoate as cholesteric mesogenic units and biphenyl 4,4′‐bis(10‐undecen‐1‐ylenate) as smectic crosslinking units were synthesized. The chemical structures of the olefinic compounds and polymers obtained were confirmed by element analysis, Fourier transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The mesogenic properties were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarizing optical microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction measurements. The influence of the concentration of the crosslinking unit on the phase behavior of the elastomers was examined. The elastomers containing less than 17 mol % of the crosslinking units revealed elasticity, reversible mesomorphic phase transition, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The experimental results demonstrated that the glass‐transition temperature, isotropization temperature, and mesophase temperature ranges decreased with an increasing concentation of the crosslinking unit. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of vinyl‐terminated, side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers containing 4,4′‐biphenyl and 2,6‐naphthalene moieties as mesogenic cores with several contents of vinyl crosslinkable groups were synthesized by chemically modifying poly(epichlorohydrin) with mixtures of saturated and vinyl‐terminated mesogenic acids. In most cases the degree of modification was over 90%. The polymers were characterized by chlorine analysis, IR and 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies, viscometry, size exclusion chromatography/multi‐angle laser light scattering, and thermogravimetric analysis. The liquid‐crystal behavior of all the synthesized polymers was examined by differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy (POM), and X‐ray diffraction on mechanically oriented samples. The crosslinking of most polymers was done by peroxide‐type initiators, which generally led to liquid‐crystal elastomers. The mesophase organization was maintained on the crosslinked materials, as confirmed by POM and X‐ray diffraction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Main‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyurethanes were synthesized based on a high aspect ratio mesogenic diol (4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐benzoic acid 4‐{[4‐(6‐hydroxyhexyloxy)‐phenylimino]‐methyl}‐phenyl ester) as a chain extender; polycaprolactone (PCL) diol soft segments of different number‐average molecular weights (530, 1250, or 2000); and different diisocyanates, including 1,4‐hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI), 4,4′‐methylene bis(cyclohexyl isocyanate) (H12MDI), and 4,4′‐methylene bis(phenyl isocyanate) (MDI). The structure of the polymers was confirmed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry and polarizing microscopy measurements were carried out to examine the liquid‐crystalline and thermal properties of the polyurethanes, respectively. The mesogenic diol was partially replaced with 20–50 mol % PCL. A 20 mol % mesogen content was sufficient to impart a liquid crystalline property to all the polymers. The partial replacement of the mesogenic diol with PCL of various molecular weights, as well as the various diisocyanates, influenced the phase transitions and the occurrence of mesophase textures. Characteristic liquid‐crystalline textures were observed when a sufficient content of the mesogenic diol was present. Depending on the flexible spacer length and the mesogenic content, grained and threadlike textures were obtained for the HMDI and H12MDI series polymers, whereas the polyurethanes prepared from MDI showed only grained textures for all the compositions. The polymers formed brittle films and could not be subjected to tensile tests. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 40: 1527–1538, 2002  相似文献

The structures and properties of liquid‐crystalline polymers containing laterally attached p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl have been studied. In contrast to their mesogenic groups, that is, p‐terphenyl and p‐pentaphenyl, the polymers have much lower crystallinity and also lower nematic‐to‐isotropic transition temperatures. The significant depression in crystallinity can be attributed to flexible chain segments laterally attached to the oligo p‐phenylene rods, which prevent close packing of the rods and thus disrupt the crystallization. The destabilization of the liquid‐crystalline phase is due to the diluting effect of the flexible polymer backbones; that is, the concentration of the mesogenic groups is reduced. The polymer containing p‐pentaphenyl can still exhibit good solubility in common solvents and emit light at about 402 nm in the solvent tetrahydrofuran. In the solid state, the emission redshifts to 418 nm, which is fairly close to the blue‐light emission. An interdigitated packing structure of mesogenic groups has been proposed to represent the structure of the polymer in the oriented state. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Glass transition temperatures and thermodynamic parameters of mesophase melting of polymers with mesogenic side-groups of the phenyl benzoate class depend on the length of the alkoxy substitutent, the mobility of the mesogenic groups and the nature of the main chain. Polymers with mesogenic groups connected directly to the main chain, obtained by precipitation from solution, have equilibrium liquid crystalline structures in which the macromolecules exist in a compact coil conformation with an ordered arrangement of the mesogenic groups. The nature of the main chain of these polymers affects the liquid crystalline structure. Mesophase melting parameters of the polymers with mesogenic groups, connected by flexible spacer groups to the main chain, are almost independent of the thermal history of the samples. These polymers in the isotropic melts are assumed to contain aggregates of the mesogenic groups.  相似文献

A series of new thermoplastic polyesters based on 3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) with flexible aliphatic spacers have been synthesized and characterized for the first time. The thermal properties of these polyesters based on EDOT are comparable to those of conventional polyesters based on the 1,4‐phenyl unit, indicating that EDOT is a viable replacement for the phenyl units. The glass‐transition and melting‐transition temperatures decrease monotonically with an increase in the spacer length. Theoretical calculations have revealed that the core angle for EDOT is comparable to that of unsubstituted thiophene and hence should be compatible with the formation of the mesophase. This has been confirmed experimentally by the synthesis of a main‐chain, thermotropic, liquid‐crystalline polyester based on EDOT that exhibits fluid birefringence. In fact, this is the first report in which a main‐chain, liquid‐crystalline polymer based on 3,4‐disubstituted thiophene has been successfully designed and synthesized. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A synthetic strategy has been developed to prepare cyclotriphosphazenes that bear polycatenar aromatic esters as promesogenic units linked to phosphorus atoms. The microsegregation of the rigid and flexible parts of the system and the space-filling properties are the driving forces that determine the kind of mesomorphism exhibited by the organocyclotriphosphazenes. Mesogenic units that contain only one terminal alkyl chain give rise to calamitic mesomorphism, since the molecules are arranged to give a cylindrical superstructure with the aromatic promesogenic cores elongated in a manner approximately perpendicular to the cyclotriphosphazene ring. On the other hand, mesogenic units that contain three long terminal chains exhibit columnar mesophases. In this case, a discotic structure consisting of promesogenic cores arranged approximately parallel to the cyclotriphosphazene ring can explain the columnar organization. The X-ray diffraction patterns corresponding to the Col(h) mesophase of the cyclotriphosphazene with dodecyloxy chains (8) indicate the presence of helical ordering, which was confirmed for a homologous compound bearing stereogenic centers on two of the terminal chains (11). All of the synthesized phosphazenes show a high thermal stability.  相似文献

New side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polymers containing both cholesteric and thermochromic side groups were synthesized. The effect of the concentration of dye side groups on the phase behavior of the polymers was examined. The polymers showed smectic or cholesteric phases. Those polymers containing less than 20 mol % dye groups had good solubility, reversible phase transitions, wider mesophase temperature ranges, and higher thermal stability. The detailed mesophasic characterization of main chain liquid crystalline polyurethanes containing biphenyl mesogen, which were synthesized by the novel AB‐type self‐polycondensation approach, was carried out by using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM), variable temperature X‐ray Diffraction (XRD), and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopic studies. The type of mesophase present in these polymers was identified to be the smectic A phase by POM and XRD studies. The smectic layer thickness was found to increase as the length of the spacer increased. The effect of temperature on the hydrogen bonding was analyzed by FT‐IR studies. The curve‐fitting analysis of the NH stretching and C?O stretching modes of vibrations indicated a gradual decrease in hydrogen bonding during the transition from the crystalline state to the mesophase. The mesophase to isotropic liquid transition was then accompanied by the complete disappearance of the hydrogen bonding. The biphenyl bands also showed changes during phase transitions due to the coupling of biphenyl vibration modes with the urethane linkage attached to it. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Liquid‐crystalline, segmented polyurethanes with methoxy–biphenyl mesogens pendant on the chain extender were synthesized by the conventional prepolymer technique and esterification reaction. Two, side‐chain, liquid‐crystalline (SCLC) polyurethanes with mesogens having spacers of six and eight methylene units were prepared. The structures of the mesogenic units and SCLC polyurethanes were confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H NMR. Polymer properties were also examined by solubility tests, water uptakes, and inherent viscosity measurements. Differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the transition temperature of the isotropic to the liquid‐crystalline phase decreased with increasing spacer length. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) studies revealed the existence of liquid‐crystalline phases for both SCLC polyurethanes. Polarized optical microscopic investigations further confirmed the thermotropic liquid‐crystalline behaviors and nematic mesophases of both samples. Thermogravimetric analysis displayed better thermal stabilities for both SCLC polymers and indicated that the presence of mesogenic side chains may increase the thermal stability of segmented polyurethanes. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermally enhanced photoinduced in‐plane molecular reorientation in new photo‐cross‐linkable polymer liquid crystalline (PPLC) films comprising 4‐[ω‐(4‐methoxycinnamoyloxy)alkyloxy]biphenyl side groups is explored using linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light exposure and subsequent annealing. The influence of the alkylene spacer length between the photo‐cross‐linkable group and the biphenyl mesogenic moiety is investigated. The straight‐line characteristics of the photoreactive mesogenic side group and the 4‐methoxycinnamoyl group play important roles in the high photoreactivity and the large thermally enhanced molecular reorientation, where the in‐plane order and the birefringence of the reoriented film are 0.61 and 0.18 are obtained. Finally, cooperative molecular reorientation of dichroic dyes doped in PPLC films is also achieved to fabricate a linear polarizer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of ferrocene‐containing liquid‐crystalline polyphosphonates with an even number of methylene groups are reported. All the polymers gave birefringent melts. The mesophase was identified as transparent with an increase in the spacer. The effects of pendant substitution and the spacer were studied with thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the phosphonate group in the spacer and the ferrocene ester group in the mesogen were examined. The presence of a steplike mesogenic structure and a pendant phenyl group in the spacer led to reductions in the glass‐transition and melting temperatures. The ferrocene moiety in the mesogen might be one of the reasons for the increased thermal stability and decreased liquid crystallinity. An energy‐minimized structure for the mesogenic and spacer segments was created with computer‐modeling programs, and it suggested the reason for the reductions in the glass‐transition and melting temperatures. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work is a continuation of the authors' earlier investigations of liquid crystalline epoxy resins prepared from diglycidyl ether of 4,4′-dihydroxybiphenyl (DGE-DHBP), which was used as a mesogenic agent, and aliphatic dicarboxylic compounds, which were used as flexible spacers. In this paper, the synthesis and characterization of liquid crystalline epoxy resins, prepared from DGE-DHBP and difunctional aromatic compounds are described. Three series of liquid crystalline epoxy resins were prepared by chain extension of DGE-DHBP with isomeric hydroxybenzoic and benzenedicarboxylic acids as well as diphenols. An isophthalic-terminated polyether was applied to decrease the temperature of phase transitions. The syntheses were carried out by catalytic polyaddition in the melt. Triphenylphosphine was applied as the catalyst. The resulting epoxy resins were investigated by DSC, polarizing microscope as well as by X-ray and IR spectroscopy. The phase transition temperatures and the type of mesophase of the resulting products depend on the character of the functional groups in the chain extender and on the position of the functional groups in the aromatic ring. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A homologous series of side‐chain liquid crystalline (SCLC) poly{[N‐[10‐((4‐(((4′‐n‐hexyloxy)benzoyl)oxy)phenoxy)carbonyl)‐n‐decyl]maleimide]‐co‐[N‐(n‐octadecyl)maleimide]} [(ME6)‐co‐(MI‐18)] random copolymers with various MI‐18 contents have been synthesized and their properties studied. The high content in threo‐disyndiotactic sequences of the maleimide main chain seems responsible for the stability of the highly ordered smectic mesophase. The relationship between structure and composition on thermotropic mesophase was investigated by polarizing optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X‐ray diffraction. For copolymers with mesogenic unit contents less than ~0.655 molar fraction the transition from (SA) texture to isotropic (I) is maintained, as shown by the TCl, ΔHCl and ΔSCl amounts and intermolecular spacing 4.42–4.53 Å and intralayer correlation lengths of 44.2–45.2 Å. The layer thickness does not appreciably depend on copolymer composition. However, copolymers with non‐mesogenic comonomer MI‐18 molar contents larger than >0.655 molar fraction X(M), are no longer liquid crystalline materials, despite its packing is preserved without any detectable appearance of birefringence. Thermodynamic boundaries of the liquid crystalline state have been established through a phase diagram. The properties of this n‐hexyloxy pendant group‐based series are compared to those of the analogous materials containing methoxy pendant groups (ME1), and differences are accounted for in terms of the local side‐chain packing within the mesophase. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A set of high‐molecular‐weight new side‐chain liquid‐crystalline polyethers was obtained by chemical modification of poly(epichlorohydrin) with potassium 3,4,5‐tris(dodecyloxy)benzoate. The degree of modification ranged from 48 to 70% depending on the reaction conditions, and the upper value was an apparent modification plateau. NMR characterization indicated that no side reactions of any kind occurred (e.g., deshydrohalogenation). All copolymers had a nematic columnar mesophase whose range of stability depended on the modification degree. X‐ray diffraction experiments performed on mechanically oriented samples showed that tapered groups were tilted with respect to the column axes. Also X‐ray experiments and density measurements demonstrated that the number of disks per unit cell decreased as the modification degree increased. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel combined main‐chain/side‐chain liquid crystalline polymer based on mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystal polymers (MJLCPs) containing two biphenyls per mesogenic core of MJLCPs main chain, poly(2,5‐bis{[6‐(4‐butoxy‐4′‐oxy‐biphenyl)hexyl]oxycarbonyl}styrene) (P1–P8) was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The chemical structure of the monomer was confirmed by elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The molecular characterizations of the polymer with different molecular weights (P1–P8) were performed with 1H NMR, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their phase transitions and liquid‐crystalline behaviors of the polymers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscope (POM). We found that the polymers P1–P8 exhibited similar behavior with three different liquid crystalline phases upon heating to or cooling in addition to isotropic state, which should be related to the complex liquid crystal property of the side‐chain and the main‐chain. Moreover, the transition temperatures of liquid crystalline phases of P1–P8 are found to be dependent on the molecular weight. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Supramolecular side chain liquid crystalline polymers were prepared from poly(3-carboxypropylmethylsiloxane) (PSI100) and azobenzene-based derivatives through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the carboxylic acid groups of PSI100 and the imidazole rings in the azobenzene-based derivatives. The presence of H-bonding was confirmed using FTIR spectroscopy. The polymeric complexes behave as liquid crystalline polymers and exhibit nematic mesophases identified on the basis of the observation of Schlieren textures. The mesogenic behaviour of these complexes was studied by polarizing optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The thermal behaviour of the complexes was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. On increasing the spacer length, the transition temperatures initially increase. A further increase in spacer length, however, leads to a decrease in the transition temperatures. The electron donor-acceptor interaction between unlike mesogenic units in supramolecular copolymeric complexes helps to stabilize the mesophase.  相似文献

A series of azo-type side-chain liquid crystalline polysiloxanes (AZLCPs) were synthesized, starting from organic polysiloxane and azo-type mesogenic compounds having an end allyl group. The AZLCPs were further used to coordinate with palladium dichloride and potassium chloride, by which a series of palladium complexes of AZLCPs (Pd–AZLCPs) were prepared. The mesogenic properties of all of the liquid crystalline polymers were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry, polarized microscope and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. It was found that all of the polymer ligands and their palladium complexes showed thermotropic liquid crystallinity and that the incorporation of the palladium ions gave positive effects to the mesogenic properties of their polymer ligand counterpart. Compared with the corresponding AZLCPs, the Pd–AZLCPs have higher isotropization temperatures and a broader mesophase temperature range. The mesogenic properties of the liquid crystalline polymer ligands and their palladium complexes were also varied gradually by changing the length of the alkoxy groups on the side chain. The polymers that have a color emissive group and a highly flexible polysiloxane main chain may potentially be used as nonlinear optical materials.  相似文献
