The double melting behavior of a thermotropic liquid crystalline polyimide was studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized light microscopy (PLM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS). This liquid crystalline polyimide exhibited a normal melting peak around 278 °C and transformed into a smectic A phase. The smectic A phase changed to nematic phase upon heating to 298 °C, then became isotropic melt around 345 °C. The samples annealed or isothermally crystallized at lower temperature showed double melting endotherms during heating scan. The annealing‐induced melting endotherm was highly dependent on annealing conditions, whereas the normal melting endotherm was almost not influenced by annealing when the annealing temperature was low. Various possibilities for the lower melting endotherm are discussed. The equilibrium melting points of both melting peaks were extrapolated to be 283.2 °C. Combined analytical results showed that the double melting peaks were from the melting of the two types of crystallites generated from two crystallization processes: a slow and a fast one. Fast crystallization may start from the well‐aligned liquid crystal domains, whereas the slow one may be from the fringed or amorphous regions. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To investigate the effect of spacer length and linkages between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal group on the molecular interaction and physical properties of polymers, two series of novel side chain liquid crystalline polyacrylates were synthesized. These were composed of liquid crystalline monomers with six or eleven methylene segments as spacers, and chiral monomers end capped with menthyl or cholesteryl groups. Liquid crystalline phases of the polymers were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy, and confirmed with X‐ray diffractometry. Color image recording of the synthesized polymer films was achieved using a thermal treatment, and then fixed by quenching. This investigation demonstrates that the introduction of carbonate linking groups between the rigid mesogenic core and terminal group decreases both the lateral molecular interaction and thermal stability of the liquid crystalline polymers. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Photo-crosslinkable thermotropic liquid crystalline block copolyetheresters with photoreactive hard segment of poly(hexamethylene p-phenylenediacrylate) and soft segment of poly(tetramethylene ether) were synthesized by melt polycondensation from n-butyl-p-phenylenediacrylate, hexamethylene glycol, and poly(tetramethylene ether) glycol (PTMG, Mn = 1000–3000). The influence of molecular weight and composition of PTMG unit on the thermal behavior was determined by differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy. All synthesized block copolymers show thermotropic liquid crystalline phase and can photo-crosslink by UV irradiation. Photoreaction of the copolymer thin film was carried out using Hg-UV light and investigated by FT–IR spectroscopy and a dynamic viscoelastic analyzer. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. We synthesized a series of n‐alkylthiomethyl‐substituted polystyrenes (#T‐PS, # = 4, 8, 12, and 16) and n‐alkylsulfonylmethyl‐substituted polystyrenes (#S‐PS, # = 4, 8, 12, and 16), where # is the number of carbon atoms in the n‐alkyl side group of the polymers, using polymer analogous reactions to investigate their liquid crystal (LC) alignment properties. In general, the LC cell fabricated using the polymer film having a longer n‐alkyl side group, a thioether linkage group, and a higher molar content of n‐alkyl side group showed homeotropic LC alignment behavior with a pretilt angle of about 90°. The homeotropic alignment behavior was well correlated with the surface energy of the polymer films; when the positive dielectric anisotropic LC (ZLI‐5900‐000 from Merck) and negative dielectric anisotropic LC (MLC‐7026‐000 from Merck) were used to fabricate the LC cells, homeotropic alignment was observed when the surface energy values of the polymer were smaller than about 25 and 32 mJ/m2, respectively. Thermally enhanced photoinduced in‐plane molecular reorientation in new photo‐cross‐linkable polymer liquid crystalline (PPLC) films comprising 4‐[ω‐(4‐methoxycinnamoyloxy)alkyloxy]biphenyl side groups is explored using linearly polarized ultraviolet (LPUV) light exposure and subsequent annealing. The influence of the alkylene spacer length between the photo‐cross‐linkable group and the biphenyl mesogenic moiety is investigated. The straight‐line characteristics of the photoreactive mesogenic side group and the 4‐methoxycinnamoyl group play important roles in the high photoreactivity and the large thermally enhanced molecular reorientation, where the in‐plane order and the birefringence of the reoriented film are 0.61 and 0.18 are obtained. Finally, cooperative molecular reorientation of dichroic dyes doped in PPLC films is also achieved to fabricate a linear polarizer. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three liquid crystalline N-substituted pyrroles were synthesized from 6-(1-pyrrolyl)hexanol with phenolic derivatives having a mesogenic core of cyclohexylbenzene or biphenyl by Mitsunobu reaction. These pyrroles had two anodic peaks at 1.4 and 1.8 V (vs. SCE). The former was due to an oxidation of the pyrrole moiety and the latter was due to an oxidation of the mesogenic moiety. These pyrrole monomers were polymerized by electrochemical and chemical methods. The potentiostatic method and the chemical method using FeCl3 gave a soluble and fusible polymer, respectively. A polymer having a mesogenic core of cyclohexyl benzene obtained by the chemical method and a polymer having a mesogenic core of biphenylketone obtained by the potentiostatic method had a liquid-crystalline phase. The phase was identified as smectic A by polarizing microscopy and XRD analysis. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 2691–2698, 1998  相似文献

A series of thermotropic liquid crystalline polyurethanes (LCPUs) were synthesized by the polyaddition reactions of 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate (2,4‐TDI) with 4,4′‐bis(6‐hydroxyhexoxy)biphenyl (BHHBP) and aliphatic diol. The intrinsic viscosities of the polymers were measured by Ubbelohde viscometer, and the chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT‐IR). The LCPUs were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The intrinsic viscosities were 0.56–0.83 dl/g. According to the melting point (Tm) and the isotropic temperature (Ti) of the LCPUs, the temperature range of the liquid crystalline phase became wider with increased number of methylene spacers in the polyurethane. The LCPUs exhibited a nematic phase with a threaded texture and had a wide mesophase temperature range. The decomposition temperature of the LCPUs was >300°C. On WAXD, the LCPUs give a dispersing peak at 2θ ≈ 20°, and a strong diffraction peak at 2θ ≈ 25°. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Photoactive hyperbranched benzylidene liquid‐crystalline polyester (PAHBP) and photoactive linear benzylidene liquid‐crystalline polyester (PALBP) were synthesized by solution polycondensation with pyridine as an acid acceptor. PAHBP and PALBP were thoroughly characterized with Fourier transform infrared, 1H and 13C NMR, ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometry, fluorescent spectrophotometry, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and polarized optical microscopy. Both polymers exhibited nematic mesophase. The glass‐transition temperature and liquid‐crystalline isotropic temperature of PAHBP were higher than those of PALBP. During photolysis under ultraviolet light, both polymers underwent an intermolecular photocycloaddition reaction, and the photoactivity of PAHBP was faster than that of PALBP; this was further confirmed by photoviscosity studies. PALBP and PAHBP were fluorescent in nature. An increase in the fluorescence intensity with the time of ultraviolet‐light irradiation was observed for both PAHBP and PALBP. The rate of increase in the fluorescence intensity of the linear analogue (PALBP) was higher than that of the hyperbranched polymer (PAHBP). This behavior could be attributed to the attainment of better planarity in the case of the linear one but not in the case of PAHBP because of the rapid crosslinking of PAHBP leading to an irregular architecture. This behavior was further confirmed by the calculation of the steric energy from corresponding model compounds. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Based on 2, 5‐bis[(4‐alkoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrenes (M‐OCm, m is the number of the carbons of alkyl tails, m = 1, 4, and 18), three series of binary copolymers with high‐molecular weights, {poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC4), poly(M‐OC1‐co‐M‐OC18), and poly(M‐OC4‐co‐M‐OC18)} have been prepared via free‐radical polymerization. The random nature of the copolymers was expected on the basis of the assumed similar reactivities because of the analogous monomers. The phase behaviors of copolymers were studied by DSC, POM, and one‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. The results showed that liquid crystalline (LC) phase structures of copolymers, containing smectic phase, reentrant isotropic phase, columnar phase. and isotropic phase, were strongly depended on the composition and the alkyl length due to the competing among the steric effect, the microphase separation and the driving force of the entropy. When one of them occupied a dominant position, the LC phase structure can be presented for the copolymers. Otherwise, the LC phase structure is lost despite the pair of corresponding homopolymers forming mesogenic structure. Therefore, through copolymerization, LC behavior of the mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymers can be greatly varied. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. A series of fully aromatic, thermotropic polyesters, derived from 3-phenyl-4,4′-biphenol (MPBP), nonlinear 4,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid (4,4′-BDA), and various other comonomers was prepared by the melt polycondensation method and characterized for their thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior by a variety of experimental techniques. The homopolymer of MPBP with 4,4′-BDA had a fusion temperature (Tf) at 240°C, exhibited a nematic liquid crystalline phase, and had a narrow liquid crystalline range of 60°C. All of the copolyesters of MPBP with 4,4′-BDA and either 30 mol % 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (HNA) or 50 mol % terephthalic acid (TA), 2,6-naphthale-nedicarboxylic acid (2,6-NDA) and low Tf values in the range of 210–230°C, exhibited a nematic phase, and had accessible isotropization transitions (Ti) in the range of 320–420°C, respectively. As expected, each of them had a broader range of liquid crystalline phase than the homopolymer. They had a “frozen” nematic, glassy order as determined with the wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies. The morphology of each of the “as-made” polyesters had a fibrous structure as determined with the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which arises because of the liquid crystalline domains. Moreover, they had higher glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 167–190°C than those of other liquid crystalline polyesters, and excellent thermal stabilities (Td) in the range of 500–533°C, respectively. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of photoactive liquid crystalline linear and hyperbranched polyester epoxies were synthesized by polyaddition of photoactive bis benzylidene alkanone diol monomers and terephthalic acid and trimesic acid respectively with good yield. The effect of molecular architecture (linear and hyperbranched), size of mesogenic unit (cyclic and acyclic units) on the physicochemical, thermal, mesogenic, and photoactive properties of hyperbranched polymers were studied and compared. Degree of branching of hyperbranched polymers was found to be in the range of 0.46–0.49. Monomers containing cyclic moieties only exhibited nematic mesophase, while all polymers exhibited typical nematic mesophase. Intermolecular photo cycloaddition reaction was studied by ultraviolet–visible spectra (UV–vis) and NMR spectroscopy and photo viscosity measurement of UV irradiated polymer solutions. Faster photo induced behavior of hyperbranched polymers containing acyclic alkanone moiety, as compared to polymers containing cycloalkanone moieties, was observed. The change in the refractive index was found to be in the range of 0.02–0.024. Substantial variation of refractive index indicates that this polymer could be used for optical recording. All the polymers were also found to be fluorescent in nature. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem 46: 552–563, 2008  相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of nine polymethacrylates containing 4-alkoxy-4′-trifluoromethyltolane, 4-alkoxy-4′-cyanotolane, and 4-alkoxy-4′-nitrotolane side groups were described in this study. The phase behavior of the prepared monomers and polymers was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. All of the obtained monomers exhibit no mesophase, while most of the synthesized polymers reveal enantiotropic mesomorphism. The polymethacrylate containing 4-propanyloxy-4′-nitrotolane side groups was the only one which shows no mesomorphic behavior. Both the spacer length and the nature of terminal groups have profound influence on the phase transition temperatures and thermal stability of the mesophase. The polymers with longer spacers tend to form a more ordered mesophase with a wider temperature range. Among three polymers with the same spacer length, the polymer with a trifluoromethyl terminal end group is inclined to form a more ordered mesophase than the other two polymers. No side chain crystallization occurred for all obtained polymers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A series of fully aromatic, thermotropic homopolyesters, derived from 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid and various aromatic diols, was prepared by the melt polycondensation method and examined for thermotropic behavior by a variety of experimental techniques. The aromatic diols used in the study were hydroquinone, 2,6-, 1,4-, 1,5-, 2,3-, and 2,7-naphthalenediol isomers. All of the homopolyesters of 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid with aromatic diols (except that with 2,7-naphthalenediol) formed a nematic LC phase in the melt. They had the glass transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 133–164°C, the melting transitions (Tm) in the range 305–360°C and the high thermal stabilities (Td) in the range of 410–483°C. The 2,6-naphthalenediol based homopolymer had the highest Tm (360°C) and the 2,3-naphthalenediol based homopolymer had the lowest Tm (305°C) among all of the homopolymers of naphthalenediol isomers. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Three sets of novel side-chain liquid crystalline polymers with monosubstituted azobenzene moieties in the side-chain have been studied. These are poly(p-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PPHABM), poly(m-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (PMHABM) and poly(o-(4′-methoxy-4-oxyhexyloxy azobenzene) benzyl methacrylate) (POHABM). The chemical structure of the monomers was confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The structural characterisation of the polymers was performed by 1H NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography, and their phase behaviour and liquid crystalline properties were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarised optical microscopy and wide-angle X-ray diffraction. The results show that the transitional behaviour of side-chain liquid crystalline polymers containing monosubstituted azobenzene moieties depends strongly on the position of the substituent on the azobenzene moiety; for example, the ortho-monosubstituted polymers do not form liquid crystalline phases, but all the para- and meta-monosubstituted polymers exhibit a smectic A phase. Furthermore, the glass transition temperature (Tg ) of the polymers decreases in the order, para > meta > ortho. For the PPHABM and PMHABM polymers the isotropic temperature (Ti ) and liquid crystalline range (ΔT, from Tg to Ti ) are found to be in the order, para > meta, although it is surprising that the associated enthalpy changes in these polymers is the opposite order, meta > para.  相似文献

An intensive study has been conducted to compare the effects of malei hydrazine (MH) and hydroquinone (HQ) on the liquid crystallinity and phase transition behavior in the ABA/HQ/TFTA and ABA/MH/TFTA copolyesters (p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTA)). These two copolyesters were prepared by thin‐film polymerization and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing light microscope (PLM), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD), as well as Cerius2 computational simulation. Characterization and comparison of the liquid crystalline (LC) evolution and morphology changes of HQ moiety with corresponding MH moiety suggest that ABA/MH/TFTA system is energetically favorable to mesophase formation than ABA/HQ/TFTA system. When the films are quenched, a surface microcrack decoration is observed in both systems. Both systems, which have the persistence ratio larger than 6.42, satisfy the minimum requirement for the LC formation by molecular science software. The ABA/MH/TFTA film exhibits only one single peak transition. However, two distinct transitions have been observed in the ABA/HQ/TFTA system. The average Avrami exponent, n, is ~1.2, and PLM and WAXD results suggest mesophase transition in ABA/MH/TFTA film. As reflected by the results obtained from PLM, WAXD, and DSC studies, the phase transition is confirmed as crystal → nematic → isotropic in ABA/HQ/TFTA copolyester. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Wholly aromatic, thermotropic homopolyesters, derived from 4,4′-biphenol, substituted biphenols, or 1,1′-binaphthyl-4,4′-diol and 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid, and two copolyesters, each of which contained 30 mol % of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, were prepared by acidolysis polycondensation reactions and characterized for their liquid crystalline properties. The solubility behavior of these polymers has also been investigated. The two homopolymers of phenyl-substituted biphenols with 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid were soluble in many common organic solvents. All of the homopolymers had lower Tm/Tf values than those with terephthalic acid, which was attributed to the incorporation of the asymmetric 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylate units in a head-to-head and head-to-tail fashion along the polyester chain. Two copolymers had lower Tm values than those of the respective homopolymers, as expected. They formed nematic phases which persisted up to 400°C, except those of phenyl-substituted biphenols with 3,4′-benzophenone dicarboxylic acid. Each of these two polymers also exhibited an accessible Ti transition, and had a broad range of LC phase. They had glass transition temperatures, Tg, in the range of 139-209°C and high thermal stabilities in the temperature range of 465-511°C. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

A new homologous series of liquid crystalline (LC) polymethacrylates, the poly[ω-(2-phenoxycarbonyl-naphthalene-6-yloxy)alkyl methacrylate]s, in which the length of the alkyl spacer is varied between 3 and 12 methylene units, have been synthesized by free-radical polymerization. The prepared polymers were studied by IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopy, viscosity measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and polarized microscopy. Polymers with 3 or 4 methylene units spacer were glassy in nature, whereas those with 5–12 methylene units spacer exhibited smectic behavior. The glass transition temperatures decrease on increasing spacer length. The isotropization temperatures and the corresponding transition entropies showed an odd–even effect, with the odd members exhibiting the higher values. This effect attenuates on increasing spacer length. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 2391–2399, 1999  相似文献

Copolymers of a liquid crystalline monomer, 2,5‐bis[(4‐methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS), with St and MMA were prepared by free radical polymerization at low conversion in chlorobenzene with 2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The copolymers of poly(MPCS‐co‐St) and poly(MPCS‐co‐MMA) were characterized by 1H NMR and GPC. The monomer reactivity ratios were determined by using the extended Kelen–Tudos (EKT) method. Structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained from the possibility statistics and monomer reactivity ratios. The influence of MPCS content in copolymers on the glass transition temperatures of copolymers was investigated by DSC. The thermal stabilities of the two copolymer systems increased with an increase of the molar fraction of MPCS in the copolymers. The liquid crystalline behavior of the copolymers was also investigated using DSC and POM. The results revealed that the copolymers with high MPCS molar contents exhibited liquid crystalline behaviors. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The synthesis is described of four new chiral liquid crystalline monomers (M2–M5 ) and their corresponding side‐chain homopolysiloxanes (P2–P5 ) containing menthyl groups. Chemical structures were characterised using FT‐IR or 1H NMR spectra, and specific optical rotations were evaluated with a polarimeter. The phase behaviour and mesomorphic properties of the new compounds were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, polarising optical microscopy, UV/visible/NIR spectrocopy and X‐ray diffraction. The monomers and homopolymers with more aryl segments showed noticeably lower specific optical rotation value. The monomers M2–M5 formed a cholesteric or blue phase when a flexible spacer was inserted between the rigid mesogenic core and the terminal menthyl groups by reducing the steric effect. M2–M5 revealed enantiotropic cholesteric phase. Moreover, M2 also exhibited a monotropic smectic A (SmA) phase, and M4 also exhibited a cubic blue phase on cooling. The selective reflection of light shifted to the long wavelength region with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core for M2–M5 . P2–P5 exhibited SmA phases, and the mesogenic moieties were ordered in smectic orientation with their centres of gravity in planes. Melting or glass transition temperature and the clearing temperature increased, and the mesophase temperature range widened with increasing rigidity of the mesogenic core.  相似文献
