Summary Given a sequence of ϕ-mixing random variables not necessarily stationary, a Chernoff-Savage theorem for two-sample linear rank statistics is proved using the Pyke-Shorack [5] approach based on weak convergence properties of empirical processes in an extended metric. This result is a generalization of Fears and Mehra [4] in that the stationarity is not required and that the condition imposed on the mixing numbers is substantially relaxed. A similar result is shown to hold for strong mixing sequences under slightly stronger conditions on the mixing numbers. The main objective of this paper is the calculation and the comparative study of two general measures of multivariate kurtosis, namely Mardia's measure β2,p and Song's measure S(f). In this context, general formulas for the said measures are derived for the broad family of the elliptically contoured symmetric distributions and also for specific members of this family, like the multivariate t-distribution, the multivariate Pearson type II, the multivariate Pearson type VII, the multivariate symmetric Kotz type distribution and the uniform distribution in the unit sphere. Analytic expressions for computing Shannon and Rényi entropies are obtained under the elliptic family. The behaviour of Mardia's and Song's measures, their similarities and differences, possible interpretations and uses in practice are investigated by comparing them in specific members of the elliptic family of multivariate distributions. An empirical estimator of Song's measure is moreover proposed and its asymptotic distribution is investigated under the elliptic family of multivariate distributions.  相似文献

In this paper, we are interested in the calculation of the Haezendonck-Goovaerts risk measure, which is defined via a convex Young function and a parameter q∈(0,1) representing the confidence level. We mainly focus on the case in which the risk variable follows a distribution function from a max-domain of attraction. For this case, we restrict the Young function to be a power function and we derive exact asymptotics for the Haezendonck-Goovaerts risk measure as q1. As a subsidiary, we also consider the case with an exponentially distributed risk variable and a general Young function, and we obtain an analytical expression for the Haezendonck-Goovaerts risk measure.  相似文献

Among several widely use methods of nonparametric density estimation is the technique of orthogonal series advocated by several authors. For such estimate when the observations are assumed to have been taken from strong mixing sequence in the sense of Rosenblatt [7] we study strong consistency by developing probability inequality for bounded strongly mixing random variables. The results obtained are then applied to two estimates of the functional Δ(f)=∫f 2 (x)dx were strong consistency is established. One of the suggested two estimates of Δ(f) was recently studied by Schuler and Wolff [8] in the case of independent and identically distributed observations where they established consistency in the second mean of the estimate. Summary Let (X 1,Y 1), (X 2,Y 2),…, (X n,Y n) be i.i.d. as (X, Y). TheY-variate paired with therth orderedX-variateX rn is denoted byY rn and terms the concomitant of therth order statistic. Statistics of the form are considered. The asymptotic normality ofT n is established. The asymptotic results are used to test univariate and bivariate normality, to test independence and linearity ofX andY, and to estimate regression coefficient based on complete and censored samples.  相似文献

Markov inequalities on ordered linear spaces are tightened through the α-unimodality of the corresponding measures. Modality indices are studied for various induced measures, including the singular values of a random matrix and the periodogram of a time series. These tools support a detailed study of linear inference and the ordering of random matrices, to include fixed and random designs and probability bounds on their comparative efficiencies. Other applications include probability bounds on quadratic forms and of order statistics on Rn, on periodograms in the analysis of time series, and on run-length distributions in multivariate statistical process control. Connections to other topics in applied probability and statistics are noted.  相似文献

This paper contains applications of theorems of [1] for quadratic statistics which have constant regression on linear statistics. Two theorems are proved. The first is a sufficient condition which assumes that the characteristic function of a sample is an entire function. The second gives a new characterization of the normal distribution.  相似文献

For a real, Hermitian, or quaternion normal random matrix Y with mean zero, necessary and sufficient conditions for a quadratic form Q(Y) to have a Wishart-Laplace distribution (the distribution of the difference of two independent central Wishart Wp(mi,Σ) random matrices) are given in terms of a certain Jordan algebra homomorphism ρ. Further, it is shown that {Qk(Y)} is independent Laplace-Wishart if and only if in addition to the aforementioned conditions, the images ρk(Σ+) of the Moore-Penrose inverse Σ+ of Σ are mutually orthogonal: ρk(Σ+)ρ?(Σ+)=0 for k?.  相似文献

In recent years, the skew-normal models introduced by Azzalini (1985) [1]-and their multivariate generalizations from Azzalini and Dalla Valle (1996) [4]-have enjoyed an amazing success, although an important literature has reported that they exhibit, in the vicinity of symmetry, singular Fisher information matrices and stationary points in the profile log-likelihood function for skewness, with the usual unpleasant consequences for inference. It has been shown (DiCiccio and Monti (2004) [23], DiCiccio and Monti (2009) [24] and Gómez et al. (2007) [25]) that these singularities, in some specific parametric extensions of skew-normal models (such as the classes of skew-t or skew-exponential power distributions), appear at skew-normal distributions only. Yet, an important question remains open: in broader semiparametric models of skewed distributions (such as the general skew-symmetric and skew-elliptical ones), which symmetric kernels lead to such singularities? The present paper provides an answer to this question. In very general (possibly multivariate) skew-symmetric models, we characterize, for each possible value of the rank of Fisher information matrices, the class of symmetric kernels achieving the corresponding rank. Our results show that, for strictly multivariate skew-symmetric models, not only Gaussian kernels yield singular Fisher information matrices. In contrast, we prove that systematic stationary points in the profile log-likelihood functions are obtained for (multi)normal kernels only. Finally, we also discuss the implications of such singularities on inference.  相似文献

Regenerative simulation has become a familiar and established tool for simulation-based estimation. However, many applications (e.g., traffic in high-speed communications networks) call for autocorrelated stochastic models to which traditional regenerative theory is not directly applicable. Consequently, extensions of regenerative simulation to dependent time series is increasingly gaining in theoretical and practical interest, with Markov chains constituting an important case. Fortunately, a regenerative structure can be identified in Harris-recurrent Markov chains with minor modification, and this structure can be exploited for standard regenerative estimation. In this paper we focus on a versatile class of Harris-recurrent Markov chains, called TES (Transform-Expand-Sample). TES processes can generate a variety of sample paths with arbitrary marginal distributions, and autocorrelation functions with a variety of functional forms (monotone, oscillating and alternating). A practical advantage of TES processes is that they can simultaneously capture the first and second order statistics of empirical sample paths (raw field measurements). Specifically, the TES modeling methodology can simultaneously match the empirical marginal distribution (histogram), as well as approximate the empirical autocorrelation function. We explicitly identify regenerative structures in TES processes and proceed to address efficiency and accuracy issues of prospective simulations. To show the efficacy of our approach, we report on a TES/M/1 case study. In this study, we used the likelihood ratio method to calculate the mean waiting time performance as a function of the regenerative structure and the intrinsic TES parameter controlling burstiness (degree of autocorrelation) in the arrival process. The score function method was used to estimate the corresponding sensitivity (gradient) with respect to the service rate. Finally, we demonstrated the importance of the particular regenerative structure selected in regard to the estimation efficiency and accuracy induced by the regeneration cycle length.  相似文献

Summary Letf n (p) be a recursive kernel estimate off (p) thepth order derivative of the probability density functionf, based on a random sample of sizen. In this paper, we provide bounds for the moments of and show that the rate of almost sure convergence of to zero isO(n −α), α<(r−p)/(2r+1), iff (r),r>p≧0, is a continuousL 2(−∞, ∞) function. Similar rate-factor is also obtained for the almost sure convergence of to zero under different conditions onf. This work was supported in part by the Research Foundation of SUNY.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider random variables counting numbers of observations that fall into regions determined by extreme order statistics and Borel sets. We study multivariate asymptotic behavior of these random variables and express their joint limiting law in terms of independent multinomial and negative multinomial laws. First, we give our results for samples with deterministic size; next we explain how to generalize them to the case of randomly indexed samples.  相似文献

For two independent nonnegative random variablesX andY we say thatX is ageless relative toY if the conditional probability P[X> Y+x|X>Y] is defined and is equal to P[X>x] for allx>0. Suppose thatX is ageless relative to a nonlatticeY with P[Y=0]<P [Y<X]. We show that the only suchX is the exponential variable. As a corollary it follows that exponential variable is the only one which possesses the ageless property relative to a continuous variable. Motivated by the likelihood functions of several incomplete categorical data, this article introduces a new family of distributions, grouped Dirichlet distributions (GDD), which includes the classical Dirichlet distribution (DD) as a special case. First, we develop distribution theory for the GDD in its own right. Second, we use this expanded family as a new tool for statistical analysis of incomplete categorical data. Starting with a GDD with two partitions, we derive its stochastic representation that provides a simple procedure for simulation. Other properties such as mixed moments, mode, marginal and conditional distributions are also derived. The general GDD with more than two partitions is considered in a parallel manner. Three data sets from a case-control study, a leprosy survey, and a neurological study are used to illustrate how the GDD can be used as a new tool for analyzing incomplete categorical data. Our approach based on GDD has at least two advantages over the commonly used approach based on the DD in both frequentist and conjugate Bayesian inference: (a) in some cases, both the maximum likelihood and Bayes estimates have closed-form expressions in the new approach, but not so when they are based on the commonly-used approach; and (b) even if a closed-form solution is not available, the EM and data augmentation algorithms in the new approach converge much faster than in the commonly-used approach.  相似文献

Inference on an extreme-value copula usually proceeds via its Pickands dependence function, which is a convex function on the unit simplex satisfying certain inequality constraints. In the setting of an i.i.d. random sample from a multivariate distribution with known margins and an unknown extreme-value copula, an extension of the Capéraà-Fougères-Genest estimator was introduced by D. Zhang, M. T. Wells and L. Peng [Nonparametric estimation of the dependence function for a multivariate extreme-value distribution, Journal of Multivariate Analysis 99 (4) (2008) 577-588]. The joint asymptotic distribution of the estimator as a random function on the simplex was not provided. Moreover, implementation of the estimator requires the choice of a number of weight functions on the simplex, the issue of their optimal selection being left unresolved.A new, simplified representation of the CFG-estimator combined with standard empirical process theory provides the means to uncover its asymptotic distribution in the space of continuous, real-valued functions on the simplex. Moreover, the ordinary least-squares estimator of the intercept in a certain linear regression model provides an adaptive version of the CFG-estimator whose asymptotic behavior is the same as if the variance-minimizing weight functions were used. As illustrated in a simulation study, the gain in efficiency can be quite sizable.  相似文献

Stoll's construction [7] of Lévy Brownian motion l on d as a white noise integral is used to obtain an action functional I(x) defined for the surfaces x of l. This provides a Cameron-Martin formula for translation of Lévy measure , and also a large deviation principle for scaled Lévy measures . Proofs follow the lines of [2], where nonstandard techniques were used to give natural proofs of the corresponding results for Wiener measure. The research for this paper was supported partly by a grant from the SERC.  相似文献
