The effect of water on the O-H bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) of para-substituted phenols has been investigated by means of DFT calculations. It is shown that the experimental BDE values are fairly well-reproduced by simple B3LYP/6-31G* calculations carried out on the phenol/phenoxyl-water complexes taking into account only hydrogen-bonding (HB) interactions of water molecules with molecular sites (HB model). On the contrary, the BDE values computed with the polarizable continuum model (PCM/B3LYP/6-31G*)8 are overestimated by about 3-4 kcal/mol. Discrepancy between theory and experiment increases using the PCM method in addition to the HB model. Calculations show that, in general, the HB interaction with water molecules decreases the BDE of phenols bearing electron-releasing groups while increasing the BDE of phenols bearing electron-withdrawing substituents. This opposite effect is explained by considering the resonance structures with charge separation both in phenols and in phenoxyl radicals. With electron donors, the phenoxyl radical is preferentially stabilized by the HB acceptor interaction with two water molecules, while with electron acceptors the phenol is preferentially stabilized by the HB donor interaction with one water molecule.  相似文献

Bond dissociation enthalpies (BDE) of hydroxylamines containing alkyl, aryl, vinyl, and carbonyl substituents at the nitrogen atom have been determined by using the EPR radical equilibration technique in order to study the effect of the substituents on the O-H bond strength of these compounds. It has been found that substitution of an alkyl group directly bonded to the nitrogen atom with vinyl or aryl groups has a small effect, while substitution with acyl groups induces a large increase of the O-H BDE value. Thus, dialkyl hydroxylamines have O-H bond strengths of only ca. 70 kcal/mol, while acylhydroxylamines and N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI), containing two acyl substituents at nitrogen, are characterized by BDE values of ca. 80 and 88 kcal/mol, respectively. Since the phthalimide N-oxyl radical (PINO) has been recently proposed as an efficient oxidation catalyst of hydrocarbons or other substrates, the large BDE value found for the parent hydroxylamine (NHPI) justifies this proposal. Kinetic studies, carried out in order to better understand the mechanism of the NHPI-catalyzed aerobic oxidation of cumene, are consistent with a simple kinetic model where the rate-determining step is the hydrogen atom abstraction from the hydroxylamine by cumylperoxyl radicals.  相似文献

Recently, selecting high efficient phenolic antioxidants with low toxicity was paid much attention1-4. Moreover, quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSAR) for phenolic antioxidants have been investigated to accelerate the selection process5-7. Hence, how to theoretically characterize the free radical scavenging activity of phenolic antioxidants is important and significant. Although the parameters characterizing O-H bond dissociation energy or enthalpy (BDE) correlate well with …

A kinetic and thermodynamic investigation of phenols para-substituted with thiyl (SR), sulfinyl (SOR), and sulfonyl (SO(2)R) groups and ortho-substituted with thiyl groups is reported. The effect of the sulfur substituents on the O-H bond dissociation enthalpy values, BDE(O-H), was measured by means of the EPR radical equilibration technique and the reactivity toward peroxyl radicals, k(inh), of these phenolic antioxidants was determined by inhibited autoxidation studies. An inverse correlation between these two parameters was found. A p-SMe substituent decreased the BDE(O-H) value to a lesser extent than a p-OMe group (-3.6 vs -4.4 kcal/mol), whereas the effect of the same groups in an ortho position showed an opposite trend (-0.85 vs -0.2 kcal/mol). The latter result is explained in terms of the different strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bond between the OH proton and the sulfur or oxygen substituents in ortho derivatives. ESI-MS analysis of the products formed by reacting the sulfides with peroxyl radicals from the azoinitiator AIBN revealed the formation of a complex mixture of products, which may play an important role in determining the overall antioxidant activity of the parent compounds.  相似文献

The effect of 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-ol (HFP) on the properties of phenoxyl radicals has been investigated. HFP produces large variations of the phenoxyl hyperfine splitting constants indicative of a large redistribution of electron spin density, which can be accounted for by the increased importance of the mesomeric structures with electric charge separation. The conformational rigidity of phenoxyl radicals with electron-releasing substituents is also greatly enhanced in the presence of HFP, as demonstrated by the 2 kcal/mol increase in the activation energy for the internal rotation of the p-OMe group in the p-methoxyphenoxyl radical. By using the EPR equilibration technique, we have found that in phenols the O-H bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) is lowered in the presence of HFP because it preferentially stabilizes the phenoxyl radical. In phenols containing groups such as OR that are acceptors of H-bonds, the interaction between HFP and the substituent is stronger in the phenol than in the corresponding phenoxyl radical because the radical oxygen behaves as an electron-withdrawing group, which decreases the complexating ability of the substituent. In phenols containing OH or NH(2) groups, EPR experiments performed in H-bond accepting solvents showed that the interaction between the solvent and the substituent is much stronger in the phenoxyl radical than in the parent phenol because of the electron-withdrawing effect of the radical oxygen, which makes more acidic, and therefore more available to give H-bonds, the OH or NH(2) groups. These experimental results have been confirmed by DFT calculations. The effect of HFP solvent on the reactivity of phenols toward alkyl radicals has also been investigated. The results indicated that the decrease of BDE observed in the presence of HFP is not accompanied by a larger reactivity. The origin of this unexpected behavior has been shown by DFT computations. Finally, a remarkable increase in the persistency of the alpha-tocopheroxyl radical has been observed in the presence of HFP.  相似文献

O? H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDE) for a variety of substituted phenols were calculated using a combined quantum chemical method. It is found that the calculated O? H BDE correlated well with the recommended values, except for ortho‐tert‐butyl substituted phenols. For the electron‐donating group substituted phenols the calculated O? H BDE are slightly higher than the recommended values, however, for the electron‐withdrawing group substituted phenols the calculated O? H BDE are slightly lower than the recommended values.  相似文献

The bond dissociation energies of the benzylic C-H bond of a series of 16 para-substituted toluene compounds (p-X-C(6)H(4)CH(3)) have been calculated with the density functional method (BLYP/6-31G). The calculated substituent effects correlate well with experimental rates of dimerization of para-substituted alpha,beta,beta-trifluorostyrenes and rearrangement of methylenearylcyclopropanes. Both electron-donating and electron-withdrawing groups reduce the bond dissociation energy (BDE) of the benzylic C-H bond because both groups cause spin delocalization from the benzylic radical center. The calculated spin density variations at the benzylic radical centers correlate well with both the ESR hyperfine coupling constants determined by Arnold et al. and the calculated radical effects of the substituents. The relative radical stabilities are mainly determined by the spin delocalization effect of the substituents, and polar effect of the substituents are not important in the current situation. The ground state effect is also found to influence the C-H BDE.  相似文献

Relative acidities (Delta pK(a)) of phenols and oxidation potentials (Delta E(ox)) of the phenoxide anions have been calculated for nine para-substituted phenols using density functional theory. Solvent effects were incorporated using the conductor-like polarisable continuum method. Using the calculated Delta pK(a) and Delta E(ox) values in a thermodynamic cycle, the DeltaBDE (bond dissociation enthalpy) of the phenols were also determined with all values calculated to within 1.5 kcal mol(-1) of experiment. The Delta pK(a) and Delta E(ox) values were calculated for 6-hydroxy-2,2,5,7,8-pentamethylchroman (HPMC), a model for alpha-tocopherol for which there are no known experimental values. The acidity of this compound is raised by 2.4 pK(a) units and lowered by -0.79 V relative to phenol with a calculated Delta BDE of -14.9 kcal mol(-1). There is a negative correlation (r(2) = 0.86) between the Delta pK(a) and the Delta BDE values. A stronger and positive correlation is found between the Delta E(ox) (r(2) = 0.98) and the Delta BDE values. Using these correlations it is uncovered that hydrogen abstraction of phenols, as measured by the Delta BDE, is driven by electron transfer rather than by proton transfer.  相似文献

The gas-phase O-H bond dissociation enthalpy, BDE, in phenol provides an essential benchmark for calibrating the O-H BDEs of other phenols, data which aids our understanding of the reactivities of phenols, such as their relevant antioxidant activities. In a recent review, the O-H BDE for phenol was presented as 90 +/- 3 kcal mol(-1) (Acc. Chem. Res. 2003, 36, 255-263). Due to the large margin of error, such a parameter cannot be used for dynamic interpretations nor can it be used as an anchor point in the development of more advanced computational models. We have reevaluated the existing experimental gas-phase data (thermolyses and ion chemistry). The large errors and variations in thermodynamic parameters associated with the gas-phase ion chemistry methods produce inconsistent results, but the thermolytic data has afforded a value of 87.0 +/- 0.5 kcal mol(-1). Next, the effect of solvent has been carefully scrutinized in four liquid-phase methods for measuring the O-H BDE in phenol: photoacoustic calorimetry, one-electron potential measurements, an electrochemical cycle, and radical equilibrium electron paramagnetic resonance (REqEPR). The enthalpic effect due to solvation, by, e.g., water, could be rigorously accounted for by means of an empirical model and the difference in hydrogen bond interactions of the solvent with phenol and the phenoxyl radical. For the REqEPR method, a second correction is required since the calibration standard, the O-H BDE in 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenol, had to be revised. From the gas-phase thermolysis data and three liquid-phase techniques (excluding the electrochemical cycle method), the present analysis yields a gas-phase BDE of 86.7 +/- 0.7 kcal mol(-1). The O-H BDE was also estimated by state-of-the-art computational approaches (G3, CBS-APNO, and CBS-QB3) providing a range from 86.4 to 87.7 kcal mol(-1). We therefore recommend that in the future, and until further refinement is possible, the gas-phase O-H BDE in phenol should be presented as 86.7 +/- 0.7 kcal mol(-1).  相似文献

New experimental results on the determination of the bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) value of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol, a model compound for flavonoid antioxidants, by the EPR radical equilibration technique are reported. By measurement of the equilibrium constant for the reaction between 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol and the 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenoxyl radical, in UV irradiated isooctane solutions at different temperatures, it has been shown that the thermodynamic parameters for this reaction are DeltaH degrees = -2.8+/-0.1 kcal mol(-1) and DeltaS degrees = +1.3+/-0.2 cal mol(-1) K(-1). This demonstrates that the entropic variations in the hydrogen exchange reaction between phenols and the corresponding phenoxyl radicals are also negligible when one of the reacting species is a polyphenol and that the EPR radical equilibration technique also allows the determination of the Obond;H BDEs in intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded polyphenols. The BDE of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (78.2 kcal mol(-1)) was determined to be identical to that of alpha-tocopherol. Through use of the group additivity rule, this piece of data was also used to calculate the strength of the intramolecular hydrogen bond between the hydroxyl proton and the oxygen radical centre in the corresponding semiquinone radical (5.6 kcal mol(-1)), which is responsible both for the excellent antioxidant properties of catechols and for the BDE of catechol (81.8 kcal mol(-1)). These values are in poor agreement with those predicted by DFT calculations reported in the literature (9.5 kcal mol(-1) and 77.6 kcal mol(-1), respectively). Extensive theoretical calculations indicate that the BDE of catechol is reproduced well (81.6 kcal mol(-1)) by use of diffuse functions on oxygen and the CCSD method.  相似文献

Hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions of (tpfc)MnNTs have been investigated (tpfc = 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corrole and Ts = p-toluenesulfonate). 9,10-Dihydroanthracene and 1,4-dihydrobenzene reduce (tpfc)MnNTs via HAT with second-order rate constants 0.16 +/- 0.03 and 0.17 +/- 0.01 M(-1) s(-1), respectively, at 22 degrees C. The products are the respective arenes, TsNH(2) and (tpfc)Mn(III). Conversion of (tpfc)MnNTs to (tpfc)Mn by reaction with dihydroanthracene exhibits isosbestic behavior, and formation of 9,9',10,10'-tetrahydrobianthracene is not observed, suggesting that the intermediate anthracene radical rebounds in a second fast step without accumulation of a Mn(IV) intermediate. The imido complex (tpfc)Mn(V)NTs abstracts a hydrogen atom from phenols as well. For example, 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenol is oxidized to the corresponding phenoxyl radical with a second-order rate constant of 0.32 +/- 0.02 M(-1) s(-1) at 22 degrees C. The other products from imido manganese(V) are TsNH(2) and the trivalent manganese corrole. Unlike reaction with dihydroarenes, when phenols are used isosbestic behavior is not observed, and formation of (tpfc)Mn(IV)(NHTs) is confirmed by EPR spectroscopy. A Hammett plot for various p-substituted 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenols yields a V-shaped dependence on sigma, with electron-donating substituents exhibiting the expected negative rho while electron-withdrawing substituents fall above the linear fit (i.e., positive rho). Similarly, a bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) correlation places electron-withdrawing substituents above the well-defined negative slope found for the electron-donating substituents. Thus two mechanisms are established for HAT reactions in this system, namely, concerted proton-electron transfer and proton-gated electron transfer in which proton transfer is followed by electron transfer.  相似文献

The kinetics of the oxidation of phenols by trans-[Ru(VI)(L)(O)(2)](2+) (L = 1,12-dimethyl-3,4:9,10-dibenzo-1,12-diaza-5,8-dioxacyclopentadecane) have been studied in aqueous acidic solutions and in acetonitrile. In H(2)O the oxidation of phenol produces the unstable 4,4'- biphenoquinone, as evidenced by a rapid increase and then a slow decrease in absorbance at 398 nm. The first step is first-order in both Ru(VI) and phenol, and rate constants are dependent on [H(+)] according to the relationship k(f) = k(x) + (k(y)K(a)/[H(+)]), where k(x) and k(y) are the rate constants for the oxidation of PhOH and PhO(-), respectively. At 298 K and I = 0.1 M, k(x) = 12.5 M(-1) s(-1) and k(y) = 8.0 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1). At I = 0.1 M and pH = 2.98, the kinetic isotope effects are k(H(2)O)/k(D(2)O) = 4.8 and 0.74 for k(x) and k(y), respectively, and k(f)(C(6)H(5)OH)/k(f)(C(6)D(5)OH) = 1.1. It is proposed that the k(x) step occurs by a hydrogen atom abstraction mechanism, while the k(y) step occurs by an electron-transfer mechanism. In both steps the phenoxy radical is produced, which then undergoes two rapid concurrent reactions. The first is a further three-electron oxidation by Ru(VI) and Ru(V) to give p-benzoquinone and other organic products. The second is a coupling and oxidation process to give 4,4'-biphenoquinone, followed by the decay step, k(s). A similar mechanism is proposed for reactions in CH(3)CN. A plot of log k(x) vs O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (BDE) of the phenols separates those phenols with bulky tert-butyl substituents in the ortho positions from those with no 2,6-di-tert-butyl groups into two separate lines. This arises because there is steric crowding of the hydroxylic groups in 2,6-di-tert-butyl phenols, which react more slowly than phenols of similar O-H BDE but no 2,6-tert-butyl groups. This is as expected if hydrogen atom abstraction but not electron transfer is occurring.  相似文献

A procedure based on density functional theory is used for the calculation of the gas-phase bond dissociation enthalpy (BDE) and ionization potential for molecules belonging to the class of phenolic antioxidants. We show that use of locally dense basis sets (LDBS) vs full basis sets gives very similar results for monosubstituted phenols, and that the LDBS procedure gives good agreement with the change in experimental BDE values for highly substituted phenols in benzene solvent. Procedures for estimating the O--H BDE based on group additivity rules are given and tested. Several interesting classes of phenolic antioxidants are studied with these methods, including commercial antioxidants used as food additives, compounds related to Vitamin E, flavonoids in tea, aminophenols, stilbenes related to resveratrol, and sterically hindered phenols. On the basis of these results we are able to interpret relative rates for the reaction of antioxidants with free radicals, including a comparison of both H-atom-transfer and single-electron-transfer mechanisms, and conclude that in most cases H-atom transfer will be dominant.  相似文献

The effect of substituents on the strength of N-X (X = H, F, and Cl) bonds has been investigated using the high-level W2w thermochemical protocol. The substituents have been selected to be representative of the key functional groups that are likely to be of biological, synthetic, or industrial importance for these systems. We interpreted the effects through the calculation of relative N-X bond dissociation energies (BDE) or radical stabilization energies (RSE(NX)). The BDE and RSE(NX) values depend on stabilizing/destabilizing effects in both the reactant molecule and the product radical of the dissociation reactions. To assist us in the analysis of the substituent effects, a number of additional thermochemical quantities have been introduced, including molecule stabilization energies (MSE(NX)). We find that the RSE(NH) values are (a) increased by electron-donating alkyl substituents or the vinyl substituent, (b) increased in imines, and (c) decreased by electron-withdrawing substituents such as CF(3) and carbonyl moieties or through protonation. A different picture emerges when considering the RSE(NF) and RSE(NCl) values because of the electronegativities of the halogen atoms. The RSE(NX)s differ from the RSE(NH) values by an amount related to the stabilization of the N-halogenated molecules and given by MSE(NX). We find that substituents that stabilize/destabilize the radicals also tend to stabilize/destabilize the N-halogenated molecules. As a result, N-F- and N-Cl-containing molecules that include alkyl substituents or correspond to imines are generally associated with RSE(NF) and RSE(NCl) values that are less positive or more negative than the corresponding RSE(NH). In contrast, N-F- and N-Cl-containing molecules that include electron-withdrawing substituents or are protonated are generally associated with RSE(NF) and RSE(NCl) values that are more positive or less negative than the corresponding RSE(NH).  相似文献

The effect of remote substituents on bond dissociation energies (BDE) is examined by investigating allylic C-F and C-H BDE, as influenced by Y substituents in trans-YCH=CHCH2-F and trans-YCH=CHCH2-H. Theoretical calculations at the full G3 level model chemistry are reported. The interplay of stabilization energies of the parent molecules (MSE) and of the radicals formed by homolytic bond cleavage (RSE) and their effect on BDE are established. MSE values of allyl fluorides yield an excellent linear free energy relationship with the electron-donating or -withdrawing ability of Y and decrease by 4.2 kcal mol-1 from Y = (CH3)2N to O2N. RSE values do not follow a consistent pattern and are of the order of 1-2 kcal mol-1. A decrease of 4.1 kcal mol-1 is found in BDE[C-F] from Y = CH3O to NC. BDE[YCH=CHCH2-H] generally increases with decreasing electron-donating ability of Y for electron-donating groups and does not follow a consistent pattern with electron-withdrawing groups, the largest change being an increase of 3.6 kcal mol-1 from Y = (CH3)2N to CF3. The G3 results are an indicator of benzylic BDE in p-YC6H4CH2-F and p-YC6H4CH2-H, via the principle of vinylogy, demonstrated by correlating MSE of the allylic compounds with physical properties of their benzylic analogues.  相似文献

The biopolymer lignin is a potential source of valuable chemicals. Phenethyl phenyl ether (PPE) is representative of the dominant β-O-4 ether linkage. DFT is used to calculate the Boltzmann-weighted carbon-oxygen and carbon-carbon bond dissociation enthalpies (BDEs) of substituted PPE. These values are important for understanding lignin decomposition. Exclusion of all conformers that have distributions of less than 5% at 298 K impacts the BDE by less than 1 kcal mol(-1). We find that aliphatic hydroxyl/methylhydroxyl substituents introduce only small changes to the BDEs (0-3 kcal mol(-1)). Substitution on the phenyl ring at the ortho position substantially lowers the C-O BDE, except in combination with the hydroxyl/methylhydroxyl substituents, for which the effect of methoxy substitution is reduced by hydrogen bonding. Hydrogen bonding between the aliphatic substituents and the ether oxygen in the PPE derivatives has a significant influence on the BDE. CCSD(T)-calculated BDEs and hydrogen-bond strengths of ortho-substituted anisoles, when compared with M06-2X values, confirm that the latter method is sufficient to describe the molecules studied and provide an important benchmark for lignin model compounds.  相似文献

The S-H bond dissociation enthalpies [BDE(S-H)] of a set of 5-X- and 6-X-3-pyridinethiols (X = F, Cl, CH3, OCH3, NH2, N(CH3)2, CF3, CN, and NO2) have been computed using the density functional theory based (RO)B3LYP procedure with 6-311++G(2df,2p) basis set. The effects of substituents on the BDE(S-H), proton affinity of the pyridinethiol anion [PA(S-)] and ionization energy (IE) are analyzed and their correlations with Hammett's substituent constants are examined. Subsequently, a series of 6-substituted 3-pyridinethiols have been explored to find out their antioxidant potentials. Finally, a number of 3-pyridinethiol based compounds are theoretically proposed as novel antioxidants.  相似文献
