It is proved that a large class of matrix group actions, including joint similarity and congruence-like actions, as well as actions of the type of matrix equivalence, have local Lipschitz property. Under additional hypotheses, global Lipschitz property is proved. These results are specialized and applied to obtain local Lipschitz property of canonical bases of matrices that are selfadjoint in an indefinite inner product. Real, complex, and quaternionic matrices are considered.  相似文献

For selfadjoint matrices in an indefinite inner product, possible canonical forms are identified that arise when the matrix is subjected to a selfadjoint generic rank one perturbation. Genericity is understood in the sense of algebraic geometry. Special attention is paid to the perturbation behavior of the sign characteristic. Typically, under such a perturbation, for every given eigenvalue, the largest Jordan block of the eigenvalue is destroyed and (in case the eigenvalue is real) all other Jordan blocks keep their sign characteristic. The new eigenvalues, i.e. those eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix that are not eigenvalues of the original matrix, are typically simple, and in some cases information is provided about their sign characteristic (if the new eigenvalue is real). The main results are proved by using the well known canonical forms of selfadjoint matrices in an indefinite inner product, a version of the Brunovsky canonical form and on general results concerning rank one perturbations obtained.  相似文献

Complex matrices that are structured with respect to a possibly degenerate indefinite inner product are studied. Based on earlier works on normal matrices, the notions of hyponormal and strongly hyponormal matrices are introduced. A full characterization of such matrices is given and it is shown how those matrices are related to different concepts of normal matrices in degenerate inner product spaces. Finally, the existence of invariant semidefinite subspaces for strongly hyponormal matrices is discussed.  相似文献

Polar decompositions with respect to an indefinite inner product are studied for bounded linear operators acting on a space. Criteria are given for existence of various forms of the polar decompositions, under the conditions that the range of a given operatorX is closed and that zero is not an irregular critical point of the selfadjoint operatorX [*]X. Both real and complex spaces are considered. Relevant classes of operators having a selfadjoint (in the sense of the indefinite inner product) square root, or a selfadjoint logarithm, are characterized. The work of this author was partially supported by INdAM-GNCS and MURSTThe work of this author was partially supported by NSF grant DMS-9988579.  相似文献

Summary. An adaptive Richardson iteration method is described for the solution of large sparse symmetric positive definite linear systems of equations with multiple right-hand side vectors. This scheme ``learns' about the linear system to be solved by computing inner products of residual matrices during the iterations. These inner products are interpreted as block modified moments. A block version of the modified Chebyshev algorithm is presented which yields a block tridiagonal matrix from the block modified moments and the recursion coefficients of the residual polynomials. The eigenvalues of this block tridiagonal matrix define an interval, which determines the choice of relaxation parameters for Richardson iteration. Only minor modifications are necessary in order to obtain a scheme for the solution of symmetric indefinite linear systems with multiple right-hand side vectors. We outline the changes required. There is a well-established instability index theory for linear and quadratic matrix polynomials for which the coefficient matrices are Hermitian and skew-Hermitian. This theory relates the number of negative directions for the matrix coefficients which are Hermitian to the total number of unstable eigenvalues for the polynomial. Herein we extend the theory to ?-even matrix polynomials of any finite degree. In particular, unlike previously known cases we show that the instability index depends upon the size of the matrices when the degree of the polynomial is greater than two. We also consider Hermitian matrix polynomials, and derive an index which counts the number of eigenvalues with nonpositive imaginary part. The results are refined if we consider the Hermitian matrix polynomial to be a perturbation of a ?-even polynomials; however, this refinement requires additional assumptions on the matrix coefficients.  相似文献

We study the perturbation theory of structured matrices under structured rank one perturbations, with emphasis on matrices that are unitary, orthogonal, or symplectic with respect to an indefinite inner product. The rank one perturbations are not necessarily of arbitrary small size (in the sense of norm). In the case of sesquilinear forms, results on selfadjoint matrices can be applied to unitary matrices by using the Cayley transformation, but in the case of real or complex symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear forms additional considerations are necessary. For complex symplectic matrices, it turns out that generically (with respect to the perturbations) the behavior of the Jordan form of the perturbed matrix follows the pattern established earlier for unstructured matrices and their unstructured perturbations, provided the specific properties of the Jordan form of complex symplectic matrices are accounted for. For instance, the number of Jordan blocks of fixed odd size corresponding to the eigenvalue 1 or ?1 have to be even. For complex orthogonal matrices, it is shown that the behavior of the Jordan structures corresponding to the original eigenvalues that are not moved by perturbations follows again the pattern established earlier for unstructured matrices, taking into account the specifics of Jordan forms of complex orthogonal matrices. The proofs are based on general results developed in the paper concerning Jordan forms of structured matrices (which include in particular the classes of orthogonal and symplectic matrices) under structured rank one perturbations. These results are presented and proved in the framework of real as well as of complex matrices.  相似文献

The inertia of a Hermitian matrix is defined to be a triplet composed of the numbers of the positive, negative and zero eigenvalues of the matrix counted with multiplicities, respectively. In this paper, we show some basic formulas for inertias of 2×2 block Hermitian matrices. From these formulas, we derive various equalities and inequalities for inertias of sums, parallel sums, products of Hermitian matrices, submatrices in block Hermitian matrices, differences of outer inverses of Hermitian matrices. As applications, we derive the extremal inertias of the linear matrix expression A-BXB with respect to a variable Hermitian matrix X. In addition, we give some results on the extremal inertias of Hermitian solutions to the matrix equation AX=B, as well as the extremal inertias of a partial block Hermitian matrix.  相似文献

Factorization theorems, and properties of sets of eigenvectors, are established for regular selfadjoint quatratic matrix polynomials L(λ) whose leading coefficeint is indefinite or possibly singular, and for which all eigenvalues are real of definite type. The two linear factors obtained have spectra which are just the eigenvalues of L(λ) of positive and negative types, respectively.  相似文献

The behaviour of real eigenvalues of selfadjoint analytic matrix valued functions under small selfadjoint analytic perturbations is studied. Attention is paid mainly to the case when the perturbation is definite (or semidefi-nite). Earlier results of the authors concerning matrix polynomials of first degree are extended to the case of analytic functions.  相似文献

On the way to establishing a commutative analog to the Gelfand-Kirillov theorem in Lie theory, Kostant and Wallach produced a decomposition of M(n) which we will describe in the language of linear algebra. The “Ritz values” of a matrix are the eigenvalues of its leading principal submatrices of order m=1,2,…,n. There is a unique unit upper Hessenberg matrix H with those eigenvalues. For real symmetric matrices with interlacing Ritz values, we extend their analysis to allow eigenvalues at successive levels to be equal. We also decide whether given Ritz values can come from a tridiagonal matrix.  相似文献

We give a new short proof using properties of the field of values to show that

a) a complex matrix with only real eigenvalues is either hermitian or has indefinite imaginary part, and

b) one with only purely imaginary eigenvalues is either skew-hermitian or has indefinite real part, while

c) one whose eigenvalues all have absolute value 1 is either unitary or has indefinite polar defect I—TT*.

Conversely, every skewsymmetric matrix is the skewsymmetric part of some real matrix that is similar to a real diagonal matrix. The corresponding result for complex matrices is found to be false.  相似文献

The structure of a unital linear map on hermitian matrices with the property that it preserves the set of invertible hermitian matrices with fixed indefinite inertia is examined. It turns out that such a map is either a unitary similarity or a unitary similarity followed by a transposition (the case when the fixed inertia has equal number of positive and negative eigenvalues is excluded).  相似文献

In this paper we consider the convex cone of positive definite matrices as algebraic system equipped with geometric mean and B-loop from the standard matrix polar decomposition. Some algebraic structures of these quasigroups are investigated in the context of matrix theory. In particular, their autotopism groups are completely determined: they are isomorphic to the group of positive real numbers.Received: 28 April 2004  相似文献

Some properties of the Drazin inverse of a square matrix are derived which, together with elementary divisor theory, are used to investigate a spectral inequality which relates the maximal eigenvalues of two nonnegative indecomposable matrices.  相似文献

A generalization of the definition of an oscillatory matrix based on the theory of cones is given in this paper. The positivity and simplicity of all the eigenvalues of a generalized oscillatory matrix are proved. Classes of generalized even and odd oscillatory matrices are introduced. Spectral properties of the obtained matrices are studied. Criteria of generalized even and odd oscillation are given. Examples of generalized even and odd oscillatory matrices are presented.  相似文献
