We pose some problems on the Hadamard product and singular values of matrices.     

Inequalities for hadamard product and unitarily invariant norms of matrices

The paper contains some general theorems for Hadamard product of matrices which in particular include Fiedler's Theorem and a better bound for an inequality on product of eigenvalues of certain matrices due to Ando. Lieb's concavity Theorem has been proved using operator means. Some inequalities for unitarily invariant norms have also been proved.

Extremal matrices in certain determinantal inequalities

The extremal matrices in certain inequalities for determinants of sums are characterized. Related determinantal inequalities involving Hadamard products of positive definite matrices are presented. These inequalities are easy consequences of majorization results recently obtained by Ando and Visick.     

Some inequalities for the Hadamard product and the Fan product of matrices

If A and B are nonsingular M-matrices, a sharp lower bound on the smallest eigenvalue τ(A★B) for the Fan product of A and B is given, and a sharp lower bound on τ(A°B^-1) for the Hadamard product of A and B^-1 is derived. In addition, we also give a sharp upper bound on the spectral radius ρ(A°B) for nonnegative matrices A and B.     

Rank-one nonincreasing mappings on triangular matrices and some related preserver problems

Let T_n (F) be the algebra of all n×n upper triangular matrices over an arbitrary field F. We first characterize those rank-one nonincreasing mappings ψ: T_n (F)→T_m (F)n?m such that ψ(I_n ) is of rank n. We next deduce from this result certain types of singular rank-one r-potent preservers and nonzero r-potent preservers on T_n (F). Characterizations of certain classes of homomorphisms and semi-homomorphisms on T_n (F) are also given.     

Spectrally arbitrary zero-nonzero patterns of order 4

In this article the authors characterize all the 4×4 zero-nonzero patterns that are spectrally arbitrary. Several observations and conjectures are presented for the n × n case.     

Construction of nonnegative matrices and the inverse eigenvalue problem

This article presents a technique for combining two matrices, an n?×?n matrix M and an m?×?m matrix B, with known spectra to create an (n?+?m???p)?×?(n?+?m???p) matrix N whose spectrum consists of the spectrum of the matrix M and m???p eigenvalues of the matrix B. Conditions are given when the matrix N obtained in this construction is nonnegative. Finally, these observations are used to obtain several results on how to construct a realizable list of n?+?1 complex numbers (λ₁,λ₂,λ₃,σ) from a given realizable list of n complex numbers (c ₁,c ₂,σ), where c ₁ is the Perron eigenvalue, c ₂ is a real number and σ is a list of n???2 complex numbers.     

Sensitivity analysis of nondifferentiable sums of singular values of rectangular matrices

Let K(x) be an s-by-r rectangular matrix depending on a parameter x ε E and denote by g(x) the sum of its m largest singular values (1 ≤ m ≤ Min{s,r}). If K(x) depends affinely on x, then g is a nondifferentiable convex function. In this paper we consider first the affine case and give some formulas for the conjugate, subdifferential, and ε-subdifferential of g. These formulas are then used to obtain perturbation bounds for g(x). We study next the nonaffine case and discuss some questions related with the regularity, generalized subdifferentiability, and directional differentiability of g.     

Some rank equalities and inequalities for Kronecker products of matrices

A set of rank equalities and inequalities are established for block matrices consisting of Kronecker products. Various consequences are also given.     

Some necessary and some sufficient trace inequalities for Euclidean distance matrices

In this article, we use known bounds on the smallest eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix and Schoenberg's theorem to provide both necessary as well as sufficient trace inequalities that guarantee a matrix D is a Euclidean distance matrix, EDM . We also provide necessary and sufficient trace inequalities that guarantee a matrix D is an EDM generated by a regular figure.

Vandermonde matrices on the circle: Spectral properties and conditioning

Summary We study Vandermonde matrices whose nodes are given by a Van der Corput sequence on the unit circle. Our primary interest is in the singular values of these matrices and the respective (spectral) condition numbers. Detailed information about multiplicities and eigenvectors, however, is also obtained. Two applications are given to the theory of polynomials.Dedicated to R. S. Signature preserving linear maps of Hermitian matrices

The structure of a unital linear map on hermitian matrices with the property that it preserves the set of invertible hermitian matrices with fixed indefinite inertia is examined. It turns out that such a map is either a unitary similarity or a unitary similarity followed by a transposition (the case when the fixed inertia has equal number of positive and negative eigenvalues is excluded).     

Some lower bounds for the spectral radius of matrices using traces

Let A be an n×n matrix with eigenvalues λ₁,λ₂,…,λ_n, and let m be an integer satisfying rank(A)?m?n. If A is real, the best possible lower bound for its spectral radius in terms of m, trA and trA² is obtained. If A is any complex matrix, two lower bounds for are compared, and furthermore a new lower bound for the spectral radius is given only in terms of trA,trA²,‖A‖,‖A^∗A-AA^∗‖,n and m.     

On the distribution singular values of Toeplitz matrices

We prove a second order formula concerning distribution of singular values of Toeplitz matrices in some cases when conditions of the H. Widom Theorem are not satisfied.

     

Matrices that preserve vectors of fixed sign variation

For each k≥ 0, those nonsingular matrices that transform the set of totally nonzero vectors with k sign variations into (respectively, onto) itself are studied. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided. The cases k=0,1,2,n-3,n-2,n-1 are completely characterized.
