PIV study on a shock-induced separation in a transonic flow
A transonic interaction between a steady shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer in a Mach 1.4 channel flow is experimentally investigated by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV). In the test section, the lower wall is equipped with a contour profile shaped as a bump allowing flow separation. The transonic interaction, characterized by the existence in the outer flow of a lambda shock pattern, causes the separation of the boundary layer, and a low-speed recirculating bubble is observed downstream of the shock foot. Two-component PIV velocity measurements have been performed using an iterative gradient-based cross-correlation algorithm, providing high-speed and flexible calculations, instead of the classic multi-pass processing with FFT-based cross-correlation. The experiments are performed discussing all the hypotheses linked to the experimental set-up and the technique of investigation such as the two-dimensionality assumption of the flow, the particle response assessment, the seeding system, and the PIV correlation uncertainty. Mean velocity fields are presented for the whole interaction with particular attention for the recirculating bubble downstream of the detachment, especially in the mixing layer zone where the effects of the shear stress are most relevant. Turbulence is discussed in details, the results are compared to previous study, and new results are given for the turbulent production term and the return to isotropy mechanism. Finally, using different camera lens, a zoom in the vicinity of the wall presents mean and turbulent velocity fields for the incoming boundary layer.

An experimental investigation into the mechanism of shock wave oscillation in compression ramp-generated shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions is presented. Particular emphasis is focused upon documenting the respective roles played by both burst-sweep events in the turbulent boundary layer immediately upstream of the interaction and the downstream separated shear layer upon unsteady shock front motion. Unlike the majority of compression ramp experiments which involve bulk separation and large-scale shock motion, consideration is given here to comparatively “weak” interactions in which the streamwise spatial excursion of the shock front is always less than one boundary layer thickness. In this manner any shock motion due to upstream burst-sweep events should be more apparent in relation to that oscillation associated with the separated region. A discrete Hilbert transform-based conditional sampling technique is used to obtain wall pressure measurements conditioned to burst-sweep events. The conditional sampling technique forms the basis by which the instantaneous shock motion is conditioned to the occurrence of upstream bursting. The relationship between the separation bubble and shock motion is also explored in detail. The results of the experiments indicate that the separation bubble represents a first-order effect on shock oscillation. Although it is demonstrated theoretically that the burst-sweep cycle can also give rise to unsteady shock motion of much lower amplitude, the experiments clearly demonstrate that there is no discernible statistical relationship between burst events and spanwise coherent shock front motion.

Two-component laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurements were made in a planar, two-dimensional flow containing an unsteady oblique shock wave formed by the convergence of two supersonic streams past a thick plate. High-speed wall pressure measurements locate the shock wave and, consequently, allow separation of the effects of shock wave motion from the turbulence fluctuations in the LDV measurements of the shock-separated free shear layer. In the current flow isolating the large-scale changes in the position of the shock from the turbulence primarily reduces the experimental scatter rather than significantly changing the shapes or magnitudes of the turbulent stress profiles. Changes in the direction of shock motion do not significantly affect the mean velocity, but do affect the turbulent stresses.

The interaction of an oblique shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer under conditions of incipient separation is analyzed by means of large-eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) turbulence models, with the objective to explore their predictive capabilities, in particular with respect to the unsteady features of the interaction. Consistent with earlier direct numerical simulations, we have found that the flow dynamics in the interaction zone is characterized by strong intermittency associated with the formation of scattered spots of flow reversal near the nominal position of the reflected shock. Comparison with experimental results (at much larger Reynolds number) show that the qualitative features of the interaction are predicted reasonably well by both LES and RANS models. RANS models supplemented with a semi-empirical closure are also found to provide reasonable estimate of the fluctuating pressure loads at the wall.

Tangential discontinuities [1] are introduced in solving several transient and steady-state problems of gas dynamics. These discontinuities are unstable [2] as a result of the effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity. Therefore it is advisable to replace the tangential discontinuity by a mixing region and account for its interaction with the inviscid flows, establishing on the boundaries of this region the conditions of vanishing friction stress and equality of the velocity and temperature components to the corresponding velocity and temperature components of the inviscid flows. This formulation improves the accuracy of the solution of such problems by posing them as problems with irregular reflection and intersection of shock waves [1].The consideration of the interaction of unsteady turbulent mixing regions with the inviscid flow also permits the formulation of several problems in which the effects of viscosity lead to complete rearrangement of the flow pattern (the lambda-configuration) with the interaction of the reflected shock wave with the boundary layer in the shock tube [3,4], the formation of zones of developed separation ahead of obstacles, etc.).In this connection, §1 presents an analysis of the self-similar solutions of the unsteady turbulent mixing equations (a corresponding analysis of the laminar mixing equations which coincide with the boundary layer equations is presented in [1]). It is shown that these self-similar solutions describe, along with the several problems noted above, the problems of the formation of steady jets and mixing zones in the base wake.As an example, §2 presents, within the framework of the proposed schematization, an approximate solution of the problem of the interaction of a shock wave reflected from a semi-infinite wall with the boundary layer on a horizontal plate behind the incident shock wave. The results obtained are applied to the analysis of reflection in a shock tube. Computational results are presented which are in qualitative agreement with experiment [3, 4].

Time-resolved stereo particle-image velocimetry (TR-SPIV) and unsteady pressure measurements are used to analyze the unsteady flow over a supercritical DRA-2303 airfoil in transonic flow. The dynamic shock wave–boundary layer interaction is one of the most essential features of this unsteady flow causing a distinct oscillation of the flow field. Results from wind-tunnel experiments with a variation of the freestream Mach number at Reynolds numbers ranging from 2.55 to 2.79 × 106 are analyzed regarding the origin and nature of the unsteady shock–boundary layer interaction. Therefore, the TR-SPIV results are analyzed for three buffet flows. One flow exhibits a sinusoidal streamwise oscillation of the shock wave only due to an acoustic feedback loop formed by the shock wave and the trailing-edge noise. The other two buffet flows have been intentionally influenced by an artificial acoustic source installed downstream of the test section to investigate the behavior of the interaction to upstream-propagating disturbances generated by a defined source of noise. The results show that such upstream-propagating disturbances could be identified to be responsible for the upstream displacement of the shock wave and that the feedback loop is formed by a pulsating separation of the boundary layer dependent on the shock position and the sound pressure level at the shock position. Thereby, the pulsation of the separation could be determined to be a reaction to the shock motion and not vice versa.

Shock wave–turbulent boundary layer interaction is a critical problem in aircraft design. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the processes occurring in such flows is necessary. The most important task is to study the unsteady phenomena, in particular, the low-frequency ones, for this interaction. An experimental study of separated flow has been performed in the zone of interaction of the incident oblique shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer at Mach 2. Two-point correlation data in the separation zone and the upstream flow were obtained and showed that low-frequency oscillations of the reflected shock waves are related to pulsations in the inflow turbulent boundary layer.

The need for better understanding of the low-frequency unsteadiness observed in shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interactions has been driving research in this area for several decades. We present here a large-eddy simulation investigation of the interaction between an impinging oblique shock and a Mach 2.3 turbulent boundary layer. Contrary to past large-eddy simulation investigations on shock/turbulent boundary layer interactions, we have used an inflow technique which does not introduce any energetically significant low frequencies into the domain, hence avoiding possible interference with the shock/boundary layer interaction system. The large-eddy simulation has been run for much longer times than previous computational studies making a Fourier analysis of the low frequency possible. The broadband and energetic low-frequency component found in the interaction is in excellent agreement with the experimental findings. Furthermore, a linear stability analysis of the mean flow was performed and a stationary unstable global mode was found. The long-run large-eddy simulation data were analyzed and a phase change in the wall pressure fluctuations was related to the global-mode structure, leading to a possible driving mechanism for the observed low-frequency motions.

The unsteady pressure field is obtained from time-resolved tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) measurement within a fully developed turbulent boundary layer at free stream velocity of U ???=?9.3?m/s and Re???=?2,400. The pressure field is evaluated from the velocity fields measured by Tomo-PIV at 10?kHz invoking the momentum equation for unsteady incompressible flows. The spatial integration of the pressure gradient is conducted by solving the Poisson pressure equation with fixed boundary conditions at the outer edge of the boundary layer. The PIV-based evaluation of the pressure field is validated against simultaneous surface pressure measurement using calibrated condenser microphones mounted behind a pinhole orifice. The comparison shows agreement between the two pressure signals obtained from the Tomo-PIV and the microphones with a cross-correlation coefficient of 0.6 while their power spectral densities (PSD) overlap up to 3?kHz. The impact of several parameters governing the pressure evaluation from the PIV data is evaluated. The use of the Tomo-PIV system with the application of three-dimensional momentum equation shows higher accuracy compared to the planar version of the technique. The results show that the evaluation of the wall pressure can be conducted using a domain as small as half the boundary layer thickness (0.5??99) in both the streamwise and the wall normal directions. The combination of a correlation sliding-average technique, the Lagrangian approach to the evaluation of the material derivative and the planar integration of the Poisson pressure equation results in the best agreement with the pressure measurement of the surface microphones.

Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements are made to investigate the boundary layer developing over a modeled bottom trawl. The random motion of the fishing net structure as well as the flexibility and the porosity of this structure means that it is not enable to access the main characteristics of such a flow, using classical post-processing mathematical tools. An innovative post-treatment tool based on proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is then developed to extract the mean velocity flow field from each available PIV instantaneous unsteady velocity field. In order to do so, the whole available velocity database is used to compute POD eigenfunctions and the first POD modes are identified as representing the mean flow field. It is then possible to deduce the mean boundary layer flow field for each position of the fishing net structure during PIV measurements. It is then observed that the mean flow field strongly depends on multiple parameters such as surface curvature, structure porosity, random motion of the structure. Streamwise evolution of classical thicknesses of boundary layer flow are also analyzed. The present work also provides benchmark PIV data of the unsteady flow developing on fishing net porous structures, which helps the progress in unsteady numerical codes for this investigation.

The principal objective of this paper is to study some unsteady characteristics of an interaction between an incident oblique shock wave impinging a laminar boundary layer developing on a plate plane. More precisely, this paper shows that some unsteadiness, in particular the low frequency unsteadiness, originate in a supercritical Hopf bifurcation related to the dynamics of the separated boundary layer and not necessarily to the coherent structures resulting from the turbulent character of the boundary layer crossing the shock wave. Numerical computations of a shock-wave/laminar boundary-layer interaction (SWBLI) have been compared with a classical test case (Degrez test case) and both two-dimensional and three-dimensional (3D) unsteady Navier–Stokes equations are numerically solved with an implicit dual time stepping for the temporal algorithm and high order AUSM+ scheme for the spatial discretization. A parametric study on the oblique shock-wave angle has been performed to characterize the unsteady behaviour onset. Finally, discussions and assumptions are made about the origin of the 3D low frequency unsteadiness.

In transonic flow conditions, the shock wave/turbulent boundary layer interaction and flow separations on wing upper surface induce flow instabilities, ‘buffet’, and then the buffeting (structure vibrations). This phenomenon can greatly influence the aerodynamic performance. These flow excitations are self‐sustained and lead to a surface effort due to pressure fluctuations. They can produce enough energy to excite the structure. The objective of the present work is to predict this unsteady phenomenon correctly by using unsteady Navier–Stokes‐averaged equations with a time‐dependent turbulence model based on the suitable (kε) turbulent eddy viscosity model. The model used is based on the turbulent viscosity concept where the turbulent viscosity coefficient () is related to local deformation and rotation rates. To validate this model, flow over a flat plate at Mach number of 0.6 is first computed, then the flow around a NACA0012 airfoil. The comparison with the analytical and experimental results shows a good agreement. The ONERA OAT15A transonic airfoil was chosen to describe buffeting phenomena. Numerical simulations are done by using a Navier–Stokes SUPG (streamline upwind Petrov–Galerkin) finite‐element solver. Computational results show the ability of the present model to predict physical phenomena of the flow oscillations. The unsteady shock wave/boundary layer interaction is described. The results of measuring the pressure fluctuations on the wall of the nozzle of a hypersonic wind tunnel beneath a developed turbulent boundary layer are presented for the Mach number M = 7.5. On the basis of a statistical analysis, it is shown that the action of the turbulent flow is dynamically similar to the propagation of a random sequence of wave packets with continuously distributed temporal and spatial scales. Low-frequency disturbances are associated with large-scale structures of long duration that propagate at a mean-statistical velocity similar in value to the outer flow velocity. The continuous generation of weakly-correlated small-scale disturbances ensuring the maintenance and development of turbulence occurs chiefly in the inner region of the boundary layer. Spectral estimates of the power generated by the turbulent flow in the wall region of the boundary layer are presented.

Particle image velocimetry is used to investigate the interaction between an incident shock wave and a turbulent boundary layer at Mach 2.1. A particle response assessment establishes the fidelity of the tracer particles. The undisturbed boundary layer is characterized in detail. The mean velocity field of the interaction shows the incident and reflected shock wave pattern, as well as the boundary layer distortion. Significant reversed flow is measured instantaneously, although, on average no reversed flow is observed. The interaction instantaneously exhibits a multi-layered structure, namely, a high-velocity outer region and a low-velocity inner region. Flow turbulence shows the highest intensity in the region beneath the impingement of the incident shock wave. The turbulent fluctuations are found to be highly anisotropic, with the streamwise component dominating. A distinct streamwise-oriented region of relatively large kinematic Reynolds shear stress magnitude appears within the lower half of the redeveloping boundary layer. Boundary layer recovery towards initial equilibrium conditions appears to be a gradual process.
