N-type semiconducting polymers are attractive for organic electronics, but desirable electron-deficient units for synthesizing such polymers are still lacking. As a cousin of rylene diimides such as naphthalene diimide (NDI) and perylene diimide (PDI), anthracene diimide (ADI) is a promising candidate; its polymers, however, have not been achieved yet because of synthetic challenges for its polymerizable monomers. Herein, we present ingenious synthesis of two dibromide ADI monomers with dibromination at differently symmetrical positions of the ADI core, which are further employed to construct ADI polymers. More interestingly, the two obtained ADI polymers possess the same main-chain and alkyl-chain structures but different backbone conformations owing to varied linking positions between repeating units. This feature enables their different optoelectronic properties and film-state packing behavior. The ADI polymers offer first examples of conjugated polymer conformational isomers and are highly promising as a new class of n-type semiconductors for various organic electronics applications.

Two anthracene diimide (ADI) polymers with the backbone conformational isomerism, new members of aromatic diimide polymers family, have been synthesized as a class of highly promising n-type semiconductors for organic electronics.  相似文献

Molecular dimers have been frequently found to play an important role in room temperature phosphorescence (RTP), but its inherent working mechanism has remained unclear. Herein a series of unique characteristics, including singlet excimer emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence, were successfully integrated into a new RTP luminogen of CS-2COOCH3 to clearly reveal the excited-state process of RTP and the special role of molecular dimers in persistent RTP emission.

The first purely organic room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) luminogen, with singlet excimer emission and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) effect, was successfully developed.   相似文献

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a promising solution to mitigate carbon emission and at the same time generate valuable carbonaceous chemicals/fuels. Single atom catalysts (SACs) are encouraging to catalyze the electrochemical CO2RR due to the tunable electronic structure of the central metal atoms, which can regulate the adsorption energy of reactants and reaction intermediates. Moreover, SACs form a bridge between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, providing an ideal platform to explore the reaction mechanism of electrochemical reactions. In this review, we first discuss the strategies for promoting the CO2RR performance, including suppression of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), generation of C1 products and formation of C2+ products. Then, we summarize the recent developments in regulating the structure of SACs toward the CO2RR based on the above aspects. Finally, several issues regarding the development of SACs for the CO2RR are raised and possible solutions are provided.

Photochromic coordinative cages containing dynamic C Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 N imine bonds are assembled from a dithienylethene-based aldehyde and tris-amine precursors via metallo-component self-assembly. The resulting metal-templated cages are then reduced and demetalated into pure covalent-organic cages (COCs), which are otherwise difficult to prepare via de novo organic synthesis. Both the obtained coordinative and covalent cages can be readily interconverted between the ring-open (o-isomer) and one-lateral ring-closed (c-isomer) forms by UV/vis light irradiation, demonstrating distinct absorption, luminescence and photoisomerization dynamics. Specifically, the ring-closed c-COCs show a blue-shifted absorption band compared with analogous metal-templated cages, which can be applied in photoluminescence (PL) color-tuning of upconversion materials in different ways, showing potential for constructing multi-readout logic gate systems.

Metal-templated component self-assembly and then demetalation affords photochromic covalent organic cages applicable for upconversion PL-color tuning for logic gates.  相似文献

Persistent organic radicals have gained considerable attention in the fields of catalysis and materials science. In particular, helical molecules are of great interest for the development and application of novel organic radicals in optoelectronic and spintronic materials. Here we report the syntheses of easily tunable and stable neutral quinolinoacridine radicals under anaerobic conditions by chemical reduction of their quinolinoacridinium cation analogs. The structures of these [4]helicene radicals were determined by X-ray crystallography. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, supported by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements, indicate that over 40% of spin density is located at the central carbon of our [4]helicene radicals regardless of their structural modifications. The localization of the charge promotes a reversible oxidation to the cation upon exposure to air. This unusual reactivity toward molecular oxygen was monitored via UV-Vis spectroscopy.

We report a series of tunable and persistent [4]-helicene neutral radicals by chemical reduction of the [4]-helicenium cation analogue. EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations indicate that the unpaired electron is localized at the central carbon atom.  相似文献

Despite their scarcity due to synthetic challenges, supertetrahedron-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) possess intriguing architectures, diverse functionalities, and superb properties that make them in-demand materials. Employing a new window-space-directed assembly strategy, a family of mesoporous zeolitic MOFs have been constructed herein from corner-shared supertetrahedra based on homometallic or heterometallic trimers [M3(OH/O)(COO)6] (M3 = Co3, Ni3 or Co2Ti). These MOFs consisted of close-packed truncated octahedral cages possessing a sodalite topology and large β-cavity mesoporous cages (∼22 Å diameter) connected by ultramicroporous apertures (∼5.6 Å diameter). Notably, the supertetrahedron-based sodalite topology MOF combined with the Co2Ti trimer exhibited high thermal and chemical stability as well as the ability to efficiently separate acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2).

A series of supertetrahedron (ST)-based sodalite (sod)-topology zeolitic MOFs specimens ST-sod-MOFs featuring ultramicroporous square windows and a mesoporous sodcage have been synthesized via a window-space-directed assembly approach.  相似文献

We describe the synthesis of Fe(ii)-based octahedral coordination cages supported by calixarene capping ligands. The most porous of these molecular cages has an argon accessible BET surface area of 898 m2 g−1 (1497 m2 g−1 Langmuir). The modular synthesis of molecular cages allows for straightforward substitution of both the bridging carboxylic acid ligands and the calixarene caps to tune material properties. In this context, the adsorption enthalpies of C2/C3 hydrocarbons ranged from −24 to −46 kJ mol−1 at low coverage, where facile structural modifications substantially influence hydrocarbon uptakes. These materials exhibit remarkable stability toward oxidation or decomposition in the presence of air and moisture, but application of a suitable chemical oxidant generates oxidized cages over a controlled range of redox states. This provides an additional handle for tuning the porosity and stability of the Fe cages.

We describe the synthesis of Fe(ii)-based coordination cages whose stability and gas adsorption properties can be tuned through structural modifications and redox reactivity.  相似文献

Here, we report a facile and efficient approach for the large-scale synthesis of highly fluorescent sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) from inexpensive elemental sulfur under a pure oxygen (O2) atmosphere. The important finding of this work is that the polysulfide (Sx2−) ions could be oxidized to zero-valent sulfur (S[0]) by O2, which is the accelerator of the reaction. The SQDs prepared by this method possess nearly monodisperse size (1.5–4 nm), high fluorescence quantum yield (21.5%), tunable emission, and stable fluorescence against pH change, ionic strength variation and long-term storage. Moreover, the reaction yield of SQDs reached as high as 5.08% based on the content of S element in SQDs, which is much higher than other reported approaches (generally <1%). The prepared SQDs could be easily processed for widespread applications thanks to their low toxicity and superior dispersibility both in water and common organic solvents. These high-quality SQDs may find applications similar to or beyond those of carbon QDs and silicon QDs.

Highly fluorescent sulfur quantum dots could be rapidly and massively synthesized from inexpensive elemental sulfur under a pure O2 atmosphere.  相似文献

Carbon capture and sequestration is necessary to tackle one of the biggest problems facing society: global climate change resulting from anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Despite this pressing need, we still rely on century-old technology—aqueous amine scrubbers—to selectively remove CO2 from emission streams. Amine scrubbers are effective due to their exquisite chemoselectivity towards CO2 to form ammonium carbamates and (bi)carbonates, but suffer from several unavoidable limitations. In this perspective, we highlight the need for CO2 capture via new chemistry that goes beyond the traditional formation of ammonium carbamates. In particular, we demonstrate how ionic liquid and metal–organic framework sorbents can give rise to capture products that are not favourable for aqueous amines, including carbamic acids, carbamate–carbamic acid adducts, metal bicarbonates, alkyl carbonates, and carbonic acids. These new CO2 binding modes may offer advantages including higher sorption capacities and lower regeneration energies, though additional research is needed to fully explore their utility for practical applications. Overall, we outline the unique challenges and opportunities involved in engineering new CO2 capture chemistry into next-generation technologies.

New pathways for carbon capture and sequestration are needed to tackle the challenge of rising anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions.  相似文献

Colloidally synthesised nanocrystals (NCs) are increasingly utilised as catalysts to drive both thermal and electrocatalytic reactions. Their well-defined size and shape, controlled by organic ligands, are ideal to identify the parameters relevant to the activity, selectivity and stability in catalysis. However, the impact of the native surface ligands during catalysis still remains poorly understood, as does their fate. CuNCs are among the state-of-the-art catalysts for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). In this work, we study CuNCs that are capped by different organic ligands to investigate their impact on the catalytic properties. We show that the latter desorb from the surface at a cathodic potential that depends on their binding strength with the metal surface, rather than their own electroreduction potentials. By monitoring the evolving surface chemistry in situ, we find that weakly bound ligands desorb very rapidly while strongly bound ligands impact the catalytic performance. This work provides a criterion to select labile ligands versus ligands that will persist on the surface, thus offering opportunity for interface design.

The metal–ligand binding strength is a key parameter in determining the role and fate of the surface ligands on nanoparticle catalysts during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction.  相似文献

Hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) are a diverse and tunable class of materials, but their potential as free-standing two-dimensional nanomaterials has yet to be explored. Here we report the self-assembly of two layered hydrogen-bonded frameworks based on strong, charge-assisted hydrogen-bonding between carboxylate and amidinium groups. Ultrasound-assisted liquid exfoliation of both materials readily produces monolayer hydrogen-bonded organic nanosheets (HONs) with micron-sized lateral dimensions. The HONs show remarkable stability and maintain their extended crystallinity and monolayer structures even after being suspended in water at 80 °C for three days. These systems also exhibit efficient fluorescence quenching of an organic dye in organic solvents, superior to the quenching ability of the bulk frameworks. We anticipate that this approach will provide a route towards a diverse new family of molecular two-dimensional materials.

We report the liquid-phase ultrasonic exfoliation of two layered hydrogen-bonded frameworks into monolayer, micron-sized, and water-stable nanosheets (HONs) connected purely by hydrogen-bonding interactions.  相似文献

Although biological imaging is mostly performed in aqueous media, it is hardly ever considered that water acts as a classic fluorescence quencher for organic fluorophores. By investigating the fluorescence properties of 42 common organic fluorophores recommended for biological labelling, we demonstrate that H2O reduces their fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime by up to threefold and uncover the underlying fluorescence quenching mechanism. We show that the quenching efficiency is significantly larger for red-emitting probes and follows an energy gap law. The fluorescence quenching finds its origin in high-energy vibrations of the solvent (OH groups), as methanol and other linear alcohols are also found to quench the emission, whereas it is restored in deuterated solvents. Our observations are consistent with a mechanism by which the electronic excitation of the fluorophore is resonantly transferred to overtones and combination transitions of high-frequency vibrational stretching modes of the solvent through space and not through hydrogen bonds. Insight into this solvent-assisted quenching mechanism opens the door to the rational design of brighter fluorescent probes by offering a justification for protecting organic fluorophores from the solvent via encapsulation.

Overtones and combinations of O–H vibrations in the solvent efficiently quench red-emitting fluorophores by resonant energy transfer.  相似文献

Discrete (M3L2)n cages assembled from a tripodal ligand (L) and metal ions (M: Cu(i) or Ag(i)) are embedded in networked coordination hosts formed by partial dissociation of the same discrete cages during the crystallization process. The resulting “eggs-in-an-egg-carton” structures provide unique examples of the co-crystallization of discrete and infinite coordination frameworks.

Discrete coordination cages were connected into the infinite lattices via shape-complementary co-crystallization with networked coordination hosts in the “eggs-in-an-egg-carton” styles.  相似文献

Designing artificial light harvesting systems with the ability to utilize the output energy for fruitful application in aqueous medium is an intriguing topic for the development of clean and sustainable energy. We report here facile synthesis of three prismatic molecular cages as imminent supramolecular optoelectronic materials via two-component coordination-driven self-assembly of a new tetra-imidazole donor (L) in combination with 180°/120° di-platinum(ii) acceptors. Self-assembly of 180° trans-Pt(ii) acceptors A1 and A2 with L leads to the formation of cages Pt4L2(1a) and Pt8L2(2a) respectively, while 120°-Pt(ii) acceptor A3 with L gives the Pt8L2(3a) metallacage. PF6 analogues (1b, 2b and 3b) of the metallacages possess a high molar extinction coefficient and large Stokes shift. 1b–3b are weakly emissive in dilute solution but showed aggregation induced emission (AIE) in a water/MeCN mixture as well as in the solid state. AIE active 2b and 3b in aqueous (90% water/MeCN mixture) medium act as donors for fabricating artificial light harvesting systems via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with organic dye rhodamine-B (RhB) with high energy efficiency and good antenna effect. The metallacages 2b and 3b represent an interesting platform to fabricate new generation supramolecular aqueous light harvesting systems with high antenna effect. Finally, the harvested energy of the LHSs (2b + RhB) and (3b + RhB) was utilized successfully for efficient visible light induced photo-oxidative cross coupling cyclization of N,N-dimethylaniline (4) with a series of N-alkyl/aryl maleimides (5) in aqueous acetonitrile with dramatic enhancement in yields compared to the reactions with RhB or cages alone.

Synthesis of Pt(ii) based metallacages as aggregation induced emissive supramolecular architectures for fabricating artificial light harvesting systems for cross coupling cyclization under visible light is achieved.  相似文献

The preparation of functionalized, heteroleptic PdxL2x coordination cages is desirable for catalytic and optoelectronic applications. Current rational design of these cages uses the angle between metal-binding (∠B) sites of the di(pyridyl)arene linker to predict the topology of homoleptic cages obtained via non-covalent chemistry. However, this model neglects the contributions of steric bulk between the pyridyl residues—a prerequisite for endohedrally functionalized cages, and fails to rationalize heteroleptic cages. We describe a classical mechanics (CM) approach to predict the topological outcomes of PdxL2x coordination cage formation with arbitrary linker combinations, accounting for the electronic effects of coordination and steric effects of linker structure. Initial validation of our CM method with reported homoleptic Pd12LFu24 (LFu = 2,5-bis(pyridyl)furan) assembly suggested the formation of a minor topology Pd15LFu30, identified experimentally by mass spectrometry. Application to heteroleptic cage systems employing mixtures of LFu (∠B = 127°) and its thiophene congener LTh (∠B = 149° ∠Bexp = 152.4°) enabled prediction of Pd12L24 and Pd24L48 coordination cages formation, reliably emulating experimental data. Finally, the topological outcome for exohedrally (LEx) and endohedrally (LEn) functionalized heteroleptic PdxL2x coordination cages were predicted to assess the effect of steric bulk on both topological outcomes and coordination cage yields, with comparisons drawn to experimental data.

A molecular mechanics approach enables the accurate prediction of polyhedral topology for homoleptic and heteroleptic palladium MxL2x coordination cages, allowing for new insight and design when considering endo- and exo-hedral functionalization.  相似文献

Metal–organic frameworks constructed from multiple (≥3) components often exhibit dramatically increased structural complexity compared to their 2 component (1 metal, 1 linker) counterparts, such as multiple chemically unique pore environments and a plurality of diverse molecular diffusion pathways. This inherent complexity can be advantageous for gas separation applications. Here, we report two isoreticular multicomponent MOFs, bMOF-200 (4 components; Cu, Zn, adeninate, pyrazolate) and bMOF-201 (3 components; Zn, adeninate, pyrazolate). We describe their structures, which contain 3 unique interconnected pore environments, and we use Kohn–Sham density functional theory (DFT) along with the climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method to predict potential H2/CO2 separation ability of bMOF-200. We examine the H2/CO2 separation performance using both column breakthrough and membrane permeation studies. bMOF-200 membranes exhibit a H2/CO2 separation factor of 7.9. The pore space of bMOF-201 is significantly different than bMOF-200, and one molecular diffusion pathway is occluded by coordinating charge-balancing formate and acetate anions. A consequence of this structural difference is reduced permeability to both H2 and CO2 and a significantly improved H2/CO2 separation factor of 22.2 compared to bMOF-200, which makes bMOF-201 membranes competitive with some of the best performing MOF membranes in terms of H2/CO2 separations.

The bottom-up approach of supramolecular polymerization is an effective synthetic method for functional organic nanostructures. However, the uncontrolled growth and polydisperse structural outcome often lead to low functional efficiency. Thus, precise control over the structural characteristics of supramolecular polymers is the current scientific hurdle. Research so far has tended to focus on systems with inherent kinetic control by the presence of metastable state monomers either through conformational molecular design or by exploring pathway complexity. The need of the hour is to create generic strategies for dormant states of monomers that can be extended to different molecules and various structural organizations and dimensions. Here we venture to demonstrate chemical reaction-driven cooperative supramolecular polymerization as an alternative strategy for the controlled synthesis of organic two-dimensional nanostructures. In our approach, the dynamic imine bond is exploited to convert a non-assembling dormant monomer to an activated amphiphilic structure in a kinetically controlled manner. The chemical reaction governed retarded nucleation–elongation growth provides control over dispersity and size.

Introducing functionalities into the interior of metal–organic cage complexes can confer properties and utilities (e.g. catalysis, separation, drug delivery, and guest recognition) that are distinct from those of unfunctionalized cages. Endohedral functionalization of such cage molecules, for decades, has largely relied on modifying their organic linkers to covalently append targeted functional groups to the interior surface. We herein introduce an effective coordination method to bring in functionalities at the metal sites instead, for a set of polyhedral cages where the nodes are in situ formed polyoxovanadate clusters, [VIV6O6(OCH3)96-SO4)(COO)3]2−. Replacing the central sulfates of these hexavanadate clusters with more strongly coordinating phosphonate groups allows the installation of functionalities within the cage cavities. Organophosphonates with phenyl, biphenyl, and terphenyl tails were examined for internalization. Depending on the size/shape of the cavities, small phosphonates can fit into the molecular containers whereas larger ones inhibit or transform the framework architecture, whereby the first non-cage complex was isolated from a reaction that otherwise would lead to entropically favored regular polyhedra cages. The results highlight the complex and dynamic nature of the self-assembly process involving polyoxometalates and the scope of molecular variety accessible by the introduction of endo functional groups.

Installation of oversized functions within a metal–organic cage may “burst” or even transform the molecular cage itself.  相似文献

Herein, we report a novel amino acid based reaction system for CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) to produce formates in the presence of the naturally occurring amino acid l-lysine. Utilizing a specific ruthenium-based catalyst system, hydrogenation of absorbed carbon dioxide occurs with high activity and excellent productivity. Noteworthy, following the CCU concept, CO2 can be captured from ambient air in the form of carbamates and converted directly to formates in one-pot (TON > 50 000). This protocol opens new potential for transforming captured CO2 from ambient air to C1-related products.

A protocol for stereoselective C-radical addition to a chiral glyoxylate-derived N-sulfinyl imine was developed through visible light-promoted photoredox catalysis, providing a convenient method for the synthesis of unnatural α-amino acids. The developed protocol allows the use of ubiquitous carboxylic acids as radical precursors without prior derivatization. The protocol utilizes near-stoichiometric amounts of the imine and the acid radical precursor in combination with a catalytic amount of an organic acridinium-based photocatalyst. Alternative mechanisms for the developed transformation are discussed and corroborated by experimental and computational studies.
