Herein, we report the first room temperature switchable Fe(iii) molecular spin crossover (SCO) tunnel junction. The junction is constructed from [FeIII(qsal-I)2]NTf2 (qsal-I = 4-iodo-2-[(8-quinolylimino)methyl]phenolate) molecules self-assembled on graphene surfaces with conductance switching of one order of magnitude associated with the high and low spin states of the SCO complex. Normalized conductance analysis of the current–voltage characteristics as a function of temperature reveals that charge transport across the SCO molecule is dominated by coherent tunnelling. Temperature-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory confirm the SCO complex retains its SCO functionality on the surface implying that van der Waals molecule—electrode interfaces provide a good trade-off between junction stability while retaining SCO switching capability. These results provide new insights and may aid in the design of other types of molecular devices based on SCO compounds.

A recent remarkable study of the C–H oxidation of substituted fluorenyl-benzoates together with the transfer of a proton to an internal receiving group by means of electron transfer outer-sphere oxidants, in the noteworthy absence of hydrogen-bonding interactions, is taken as an example to uncover the existence of a mechanism crossover, making the reaction pass from a CPET pathway to a PTET pathway as the driving force of the global reaction decreases. This was also the occasion to stress that considerations based on “imbalanced” or “asynchronous” transition states cannot replace activation/driving force models based on the quantum mechanical treatment of both electrons and transferring protons.

Using the remarkable study of C–H oxidation of substituted fluorenyl-benzoates as an example, we have shown that a mechanism crossover takes place upon decreasing the driving force, from a CPET pathway to a PTET pathway.  相似文献

Molecular spin qubits are chemical nanoobjects with promising applications that are so far hampered by the rapid loss of quantum information, a process known as decoherence. A strategy to improve this situation involves employing so-called Clock Transitions (CTs), which arise at anticrossings between spin energy levels. At CTs, the spin states are protected from magnetic noise and present an enhanced quantum coherence. Unfortunately, these optimal points are intrinsically hard to control since their transition energy cannot be tuned by an external magnetic field; moreover, their resilience towards geometric distortions has not yet been analyzed. Here we employ a python-based computational tool for the systematic theoretical analysis and chemical optimization of CTs. We compare three relevant case studies with increasingly complex ground states. First, we start with vanadium(iv)-based spin qubits, where the avoided crossings are controlled by hyperfine interaction and find that these S = 1/2 systems are very promising, in particular in the case of vanadyl complexes in an L-band pulsed EPR setup. Second, we proceed with a study of the effect of symmetry distortions in a holmium polyoxotungstate of formula [Ho(W5O18)2]9− where CTs had already been experimentally demonstrated. Here we determine the relative importance of the different structural distortions that causes the anticrossings. Third, we study the most complicated case, a polyoxopalladate cube [HoPd12(AsPh)8O32]5− which presents an unusually rich ground spin multiplet. This system allows us to find uniquely favorable CTs that could nevertheless be accessible with standard pulsed EPR equipment (X-band or Q-band) after a suitable chemical distortion to break the perfect cubic symmetry. Since anticrossings and CTs constitute a rich source of physical phenomena in very different kinds of quantum systems, the generalization of this study is expected to have impact not only in molecular spin science but also in other related fields such as molecular photophysics and photochemistry.

We employ a python computational tool to compare 3 relevant case studies with increasingly complex ground states: vanadyl complexes, Ho(iii) square antiprisms and Ho(iii) cubic structures.  相似文献

We report here porphodilactol derivatives and their corresponding metal complexes. These systems show promise as “all-in-one” phototheranostics and are predicated on a design strategy that involves controlling the relationship between intersystem crossing (ISC) and photothermal conversion efficiency following photoexcitation. The requisite balance was achieved by tuning the aromaticity of these porphyrinoid derivatives and forming complexes with one of two lanthanide cations, namely Gd3+ and Lu3+. The net result led to a metalloporphodilactol system, Gd-trans-2, with seemingly optimal ISC efficiency, photothermal conversion efficiency and fluorescence properties, as well as good chemical stability. Encapsulation of Gd-trans-2 within mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) allowed its evaluation for tumour diagnosis and therapy. It was found to be effective as an “all-in-one” phototheranostic that allowed for NIR fluorescence/photoacoustic dual-modal imaging while providing an excellent combined PTT/PDT therapeutic efficacy in vitro and in vivo in 4T1-tumour-bearing mice.

We report here porphodilactol derivatives and their corresponding metal complexes as “all-in-one” phototheranostics by controlling the relationship between intersystem crossing (ISC) and photothermal conversion efficiency following photoexcitation.  相似文献

Discrete (M3L2)n cages assembled from a tripodal ligand (L) and metal ions (M: Cu(i) or Ag(i)) are embedded in networked coordination hosts formed by partial dissociation of the same discrete cages during the crystallization process. The resulting “eggs-in-an-egg-carton” structures provide unique examples of the co-crystallization of discrete and infinite coordination frameworks.

Discrete coordination cages were connected into the infinite lattices via shape-complementary co-crystallization with networked coordination hosts in the “eggs-in-an-egg-carton” styles.  相似文献

The Heisenberg exchange coupling parameter J (H = −2JSi · Sj) characterises the isotropic magnetic interaction between unpaired electrons, and it is one of the most important spin Hamiltonian parameters of multi-spin open shell systems. The J value is related to the energy difference between high-spin and low-spin states, and thus computing the energies of individual spin states are necessary to obtain the J values from quantum chemical calculations. Here, we propose a quantum algorithm, B̲ayesian ex̲change coupling parameter calculator with b̲roken-symmetry wave functions (BxB), which is capable of computing the J value directly, without calculating the energies of individual spin states. The BxB algorithm is composed of the quantum simulations of the time evolution of a broken-symmetry wave function under the Hamiltonian with an additional term jS2, the wave function overlap estimation with the SWAP test, and Bayesian optimisation of the parameter j. Numerical quantum circuit simulations for H2 under a covalent bond dissociation, C, O, Si, NH, OH+, CH2, NF, O2, and triple bond dissociated N2 molecule revealed that the BxB can compute the J value within 1 kcal mol−1 of errors with less computational costs than conventional quantum phase estimation-based approaches.

A quantum algorithm “Bayesian exchange coupling parameter calculator with broken-symmetry wave function (BxB)” enables us to calculate Heisenberg exchange coupling parameter J without inspecting total energies of individual spin states, within 1 kcal mol−1 of energy tolerance.  相似文献

Smoothness/defectiveness of the carbon material surface is a key issue for many applications, spanning from electronics to reinforced materials, adsorbents and catalysis. Several surface defects cannot be observed with conventional analytic techniques, thus requiring the development of a new imaging approach. Here, we evaluate a convenient method for mapping such “hidden” defects on the surface of carbon materials using 1–5 nm metal nanoparticles as markers. A direct relationship between the presence of defects and the ordering of nanoparticles was studied experimentally and modeled using quantum chemistry calculations and Monte Carlo simulations. An automated pipeline for analyzing microscopic images is described: the degree of smoothness of experimental images was determined by a classification neural network, and then the images were searched for specific types of defects using a segmentation neural network. An informative set of features was generated from both networks: high-dimensional embeddings of image patches and statics of defect distribution.

Defectiveness of carbon material surface is a key issue for many applications. Pd-nanoparticle SEM imaging was used to highlight “hidden” defects and analyzed by neural networks to solve order/disorder classification and defect segmentation tasks.  相似文献

Polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has been widely used as a metal-free photocatalyst for solar hydrogen generation from water. However, rapid charge carrier recombination and sluggish water catalysis kinetics have greatly limited its photocatalytic performance for overall water splitting. Herein, a single-atom Ni terminating agent was introduced to coordinate with the heptazine units of PCN to create new hybrid orbitals. Both theoretical calculation and experimental evidence revealed that the new hybrid orbitals synergistically broadened visible light absorption via a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) process, and accelerated the separation and transfer of photoexcited electrons and holes. The obtained single-atom Ni terminated PCN (PCNNi), without an additional cocatalyst loading, realized efficient photocatalytic overall water splitting into easily-separated gas-product H2 and liquid-product H2O2 under visible light, with evolution rates reaching 26.6 and 24.0 μmol g−1 h−1, respectively. It was indicated that single-atom Ni and the neighboring C atom served as water oxidation and reduction active sites, respectively, for overall water splitting via a two-electron reaction pathway.

Single-atom Ni terminating agent is introduced to coordinate with sp2 or sp3 N atoms in the heptazine units of PCN, realizing visible-light photocatalytic overall water splitting to H2O2 and H2 without additional cocatalyst.  相似文献

We explore how to encode more than a qubit in vanadyl porphyrin molecules hosting a S = 1/2 electronic spin coupled to a I = 7/2 nuclear spin. The spin Hamiltonian and its parameters, as well as the spin dynamics, have been determined via a combination of electron paramagnetic resonance, heat capacity, magnetization and on-chip magnetic spectroscopy experiments performed on single crystals. We find low temperature spin coherence times of micro-seconds and spin relaxation times longer than a second. For sufficiently strong magnetic fields (B > 0.1 T, corresponding to resonance frequencies of 9–10 GHz) these properties make vanadyl porphyrin molecules suitable qubit realizations. The presence of multiple equispaced nuclear spin levels then merely provides 8 alternatives to define the ‘1’ and ‘0’ basis states. For lower magnetic fields (B < 0.1 T), and lower frequencies (<2 GHz), we find spectroscopic signatures of a sizeable electronuclear entanglement. This effect generates a larger set of allowed transitions between different electronuclear spin states and removes their degeneracies. Under these conditions, we show that each molecule fulfills the conditions to act as a universal 4-qubit processor or, equivalently, as a d = 16 qudit. These findings widen the catalogue of chemically designed systems able to implement non-trivial quantum functionalities, such as quantum simulations and, especially, quantum error correction at the molecular level.

We show that a sizeable electronuclear entanglement of the S = 1/2 and I = 7/2 spins of a vanadyl porphyrin provides the conditions to act as a universal 4-qubit processor, and thus implement quantum error correction at the molecular level.  相似文献

We show that a [Er–Ce–Er] molecular trinuclear coordination compound is a promising platform to implement the three-qubit quantum error correction code protecting against pure dephasing, the most important error in magnetic molecules. We characterize it by preparing the [Lu–Ce–Lu] and [Er–La–Er] analogues, which contain only one of the two types of qubit, and by combining magnetometry, low-temperature specific heat and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on both the elementary constituents and the trimer. Using the resulting parameters, we demonstrate by numerical simulations that the proposed molecular device can efficiently suppress pure dephasing of the spin qubits.

Advanced functionality in molecular electronics and spintronics is orchestrated by exact molecular arrangements at metal surfaces, but the strategies for constructing such arrangements remain limited. Here, we report the synthesis and surface hybridization of a cyclophane that comprises two pyrene groups fastened together by two ferrocene pillars. Crystallographic structure analysis revealed pyrene planes separated by ∼352 pm and stacked in an eclipsed geometry that approximates the rare configuration of AA-stacked bilayer graphene. We deposited this cyclophane onto surfaces of Cu(111) and Co(111) at submonolayer coverage and studied the resulting hybrid entities with scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). We found distinct characteristics of this cyclophane on each metal surface: on non-magnetic Cu(111), physisorption occurred and the two pyrene groups remained electronically coupled to each other; on ferromagnetic Co(111) nanoislands, chemisorption occurred and the two pyrene groups became electronically decoupled. Spin-polarized STM measurements revealed that the ferrocene groups had spin polarization opposite to that of the surrounding Co metal, while the pyrene stack had no spin polarization. Comparisons to the non-stacked analogue comprising only one pyrene group bolster our interpretation of the cyclophane''s STM features. The design strategy presented herein can be extended to realize versatile, three-dimensional platforms in single-molecule electronics and spintronics.

A chemical strategy for the bottom-up construction of 3D spin interfaces is presented. Scanning tunnelling microscopy reveals distinct electronic features of a cyclophane with precisely designed pi-stacking on ferromagnetic Co(111) nanoislands.  相似文献

We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare “naked” amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Lithium- and magnesium complexes of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes are bright luminescent, because the metals prevent molecular distortions upon excitation.  相似文献

Organic radicals are important species with single electrons. Because of their open-shell structure, they are widely used in functional materials, such as spin probes, magnetic materials and optoelectronic materials. Owing to the high reactivity of single electrons, they often serve as a key intermediate in organic synthesis. Therefore, tuning the stability of radicals is crucial for their functions. Herein, we summarize covalent and non-covalent approaches to tune the stability of organic radicals through steric effects and tuning the delocalization of spin density. Covalent approaches can tune the stability of radicals effectively and non-covalent approaches benefit from dynamicity and reversibility. It is anticipated that the further development of covalent and non-covalent approaches, as well as the interplay between them, may push the fields forward by enriching new radical materials and radical mediated reactions.

Singlet fission (SF) is expected to exceed the Shockley–Queisser theoretical limit of efficiency of organic solar cells. Transport of spin-entanglement in the triplet–triplet pair state via one singlet exciton is a promising phenomenon for several energy conversion applications including quantum information science. However, direct observation of electron spin polarization by transport of entangled spin-states has not been presented. In this study, time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance has been utilized to observe the transportation of singlet and quintet characters generating correlated triplet–triplet (T + T) exciton-pair states by probing the electron spin polarization (ESP) generated in thin films of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene. We have clearly demonstrated that the ESP detected at the resonance field positions of individual triplet excitons is dependent on the morphology and on the detection delay time after laser flash to cause SF. ESP was clearly explained by quantum superposition of singlet–triplet–quintet wavefunctions via picosecond triplet-exciton dissociation as the electron spin polarization transfer from strongly exchange-coupled singlet and quintet TT states to weakly-coupled spin-correlated triplet pair states. Although the coherent superposition of spin eigenstates was not directly detected, the present interpretation of the spin correlation of the separated T + T exciton pair may pave new avenues not only for elucidating the vibronic role in the de-coupling between two excitons but also for scalable quantum information processing using quick T + T dissociation via one-photon excitation.

A modular strategy has been employed to develop a new class of fluorescent molecules, which generates discrete, dimeric stacked fluorophores upon complexation with multiple cucurbit[8]uril macrocycles. The multiple constraints result in a “static” complex (remaining as a single entity for more than 30 ms) and facilitate fluorophore coupling in the ground state, showing a significant bathochromic shift in absorption and emission. This modular design is surprisingly applicable and flexible and has been validated through an investigation of nine different fluorophore cores ranging in size, shape, and geometric variation of their clamping modules. All fluorescent dimers evaluated can be photo-excited to atypical excimer-like states with elongated excited lifetimes (up to 37 ns) and substantially high quantum yields (up to 1). This strategy offers a straightforward preparation of discrete fluorophore dimers, providing promising model systems with explicitly stable dimeric structures and tunable photophysical features, which can be utilized to study various intermolecular processes.

Dimerisation of a wide range of fluorophores through multiple CB[8] clampings leads to constrained intracomplex motion and distinct photophysical properties.  相似文献

The plasmonic property of a nanostructure is highly dependent on its morphology, but there are few methods for appending a domain as the “functional group” or modifier. As a means of modulating plasmonic properties, we create and modulate Au hats on Au nanoparticles, including mortarboards, beret hats, helmets, crowns, antler hats and antenna hats. The structural control arises from the active surface growth as a result of dynamic competition between ligand absorption and metal deposition. It allows the continuous tuning of hat morphologies, from the facet-controlled growth of mortarboards, to the spreading-favored growth of beret hats and helmets, and to the vertical growth of pillars in crowns, antler hats and antenna hats. Among these plasmonic nanostructures, the mortarboards show excellent SERS enhancement of 8.1 × 105, which is among the best in colloidal nanostructures; and the antler hats show the photothermal conversion efficiency of 66.2%, which compares favorably with the literature reports.

We show that active surface growth is an effective method to create structural variety in the appending domain of Au seeds. The dynamic competition between the growth sites led to different Au hats on seeds.  相似文献

Developing new photoswitchable noncovalent interaction motifs with controllable bonding affinity is crucial for the construction of photoresponsive supramolecular systems and materials. Here we describe a unique “photolocking” strategy for realizing photoswitchable control of quadruple hydrogen-bonding interactions on the basis of modifying the ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) module with an ortho-ester substituted azobenzene unit as the “photo-lock”. Upon light irradiation, the obtained Azo-UPy motif is capable of unlocking/locking the partial H-bonding sites of the UPy unit, leading to photoswitching between homo- and heteroquadruple hydrogen-bonded dimers, which has been further applied for the fabrication of novel tunable hydrogen bonded supramolecular systems. This “photolocking” strategy appears to be broadly applicable in the rational design and construction of other H-bonding motifs with sufficiently photoswitchable noncovalent interactions.

A photolocking strategy is described to achieve the construction of effectively photoswitchable quadruple hydrogen bonds featuring with photoregulable H-bonding affinities, which is further applied in the photocontrollable H-bonded self-assemblies.  相似文献

This work emphasizes easy access to α-vinyl and aryl amino acids via Ni-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling of bench-stable N-carbonyl-protected α-pivaloyloxy glycine with vinyl/aryl halides and triflates. The protocol permits the synthesis of α-amino acids bearing hindered branched vinyl groups, which remains a challenge using the current methods. On the basis of experimental and DFT studies, simultaneous addition of glycine α-carbon (Gly) radicals to Ni(0) and Ar–Ni(ii) may occur, with the former being more favored where oxidative addition of a C(sp2) electrophile to the resultant Gly–Ni(i) intermediate gives a key Gly–Ni(iii)–Ar intermediate. The auxiliary chelation of the N-carbonyl oxygen to the Ni center appears to be crucial to stabilize the Gly–Ni(i) intermediate.

We have developed Ni-catalyzed reductive coupling of N-carbonyl protected α-pivaloyloxy glycine with Csp2-electrophiles that enabled facile preparation of α-amino acids, including those bearing hindered branched vinyl groups.  相似文献

Although metal-containing polyoxomolybdates (molybdenum oxide clusters) exhibit outstanding catalytic properties, their precise synthetic method has not yet been developed. This is mainly because the very low stability of the multivacant lacunary polyoxomolybdates limited their use as synthetic precursors. Here, we present a “protecting group strategy” in polyoxometalate synthesis and successfully develop an efficient method for synthesising multinuclear metal-containing polyoxomolybdates using pyridine as a protecting group for unstable trivacant lacunary Keggin-type polyoxomolybdate [PMo9O34]9−. Specifically, tetranuclear cubane- and planar-type manganese clusters were selectively synthesised in the polyoxomolybdates using the present method. The importance of this work is that, in addition to being the first practical way of utilizing multivacant lacunary polyoxomolybdates as precursors, this new “protecting group strategy” will make it possible to produce polyoxometalates with unexplored structures and properties.

A “protecting group strategy” for unstable lacunary polyoxomolybdates enabled successful synthesis of two types of tetranuclear manganese clusters.  相似文献

The spin state in heterobimetallic complexes heavily influences both reactivity and magnetism. Exerting control over spin states in main group-based heterobimetallics requires a different approach as the orbital interactions can differ substantially from that of classic coordination complexes. By deliberately engendering an energetic mismatch within the two metals in a bimetallic complex we can mimic the electronic structure of lanthanides. Towards this end, we report a new family of complexes, [Ph,MeTpMSnPh3] where M = Mn (3), Fe (4), Co (5), Ni (6), Zn (7), featuring unsupported bonding between a transition metal and Sn which represent an unusual high spin electronic structure. Analysis of the frontier orbitals reveal the desired orbital mismatch with Sn 5s/5p primarily interacting with 4s/4p M orbitals yielding localized, non-bonding d orbitals. This approach offers a mechanism to design and control spin states in bimetallic complexes.

We report a series of high spin bimetallic transition metal–tin complexes. The unusual high spin configuration in a bimetallic complex is enabled by an energetic mismatch in the orbital energies, leading to lanthanide-like nonbonding interactions.  相似文献
