In this study, the feasibility of GC–MS was evaluated for the quantification of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in environmental samples. These included methyl ethyl ketone, isobutyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, and butyl acetate plus benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). For this purpose, the gaseous standard for these VOCs were analyzed by GC–MS with the aid of both direct injection (DI) into the GC injector and solid-phase microextraction (SPME). The liquid phase standard prepared independently was tested additionally by the DI method as a reference to gaseous calibration. The detection limit (DL) values, when tested for basic quality assurance in this study, showed large differences between DI (0.002–0.007 ng) and SPME method (1.03–1.81 ng) in terms of absolute mass. The DL values, when expressed in terms of concentration (v/v), showed considerable improvement in SPME (below 0.40 nmol mol−1) relative to the DI method (∼6–15 nmol mol−1). The reliability of the GC–MS method was further validated through an analysis of real environmental samples collected from an industrial area.  相似文献

The linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) model was used to characterize interactions responsible for sorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in air samples on six different solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers at 296K and zero relative humidity. The polydimethylsiloxane and polyacrylate fibers sorption data were also modeled at different relative humidities in the range of 10-90% and influence of water vapors on the extraction process is discussed. The LSER equations were obtained by a multiple regression of the distribution coefficients of 14 probe solutes on an appropriate SPME fiber against the solvation parameters of the solutes. The derived LSER equations successfully predicted the VOC distribution coefficients and the selectivity of individual SPME fibers for the various volatile solutes. The LSER approach coupled with SPME is a relatively simple and reliable tool to rapidly characterize the sorption mechanism of VOCs with various stationary phases and may potentially be applied to design and test new chromatographic materials for sampling or separation of VOCs.  相似文献

Multiple solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is an useful technique for the direct quantification of solid samples removing any matrix effect. The volatile organic compounds formed in the extrusion-coating process of multilayer packaging materials have already been quantified by multiple HS-SPME coupled to gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry (MS) using volatile organic compound (VOC) solutions in hexadecane for calibration. In this article, water is proposed as solvent to prepare the calibration solutions because it provides a shorter calibration time, better linearity, better reproducibility, and lower detection limits than hexadecane. Besides, the extraction of VOCs from aqueous solutions is exhaustive and avoids the extrapolations needed to calculate the total peak areas, as they can be calculated as the sum of the individual areas of each extraction. Finally, it is checked whether the two solvents provide the same mean values for the total peak areas.  相似文献

Whole air sampling using containers such as flexible bags or rigid canisters is commonly used to collect samples of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in air. The objective of this study was to compare the stability of polyester aluminum (PEA) and polyvinyl fluoride (PVF, brand name Tedlar®) bags for gaseous VOC sampling. Eight VOC standards (benzene, toluene, p-xylene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, butyl acetate, and isobutyl alcohol) were placed into each bag at storage times of 0, 2, and 3 days prior to analyses by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). From each bag representing each storage day, samples of 3 different mass loadings were withdrawn and analyzed to derive response factors (RF) of each chemical between the slope of the GC response (y-axis) vs. loaded mass (x-axis). The relative recoveries (RR) of VOC, if derived by dividing RF value of a given storage day by that of 0 day, varied by time, bag type, and VOC type. If the RR values after three days are compared, those of methyl isobutyl ketone were the highest with 96 (PVF) and 99% (PEA); however, the results of isobutyl alcohol were highly contrasting between the two bags with 31 and 94%, respectively. Differences in RR values between the two bag types increased with storage time, such that RR of PEA bags (88 ± 10%) were superior to those of PVF bags (73 ± 22%) after three days, demonstrating that VOC in PEA bags were more stable than in PVF bags.  相似文献

In this study, a series of experiments were conducted to examine the feasibility of the gas chromatographic approach for the quantification of several odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in environmental samples which included methyl ethyl ketone, isobutyl alcohol, methyl isobutyl ketone, and butyl acetate plus benzene, toluene, and xylene (namely, BTX). The gaseous working standards (WS) of seven compounds were initially calibrated at varying concentration ranges by direct injection (DI) into GC injector. The detection properties of these compounds were then tested with a thermal desorber (TD). The relative sensitivities of three aromatic VOCs differed greatly between DI and TD methods. In contrast, four polar VOCs tend to consistently exhibit relative enhancement in response factors with increasing molecular mass (an exception of butyl acetate), regardless of method. The TD-based analysis was reliable enough to detect all target VOCs below their odor threshold values with their detection limit (DL) values. This TD method, when tested against a number of environmental samples collected from several industrial facilities, confirmed the presence of these odorous VOCs at a wide concentration range.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from in vitro cultures may reveal information on species and metabolism. Owing to low nmol L−1 concentration ranges, pre‐concentration techniques are required for gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) based analyses. This study was intended to compare the efficiency of established micro‐extraction techniques – solid‐phase micro‐extraction (SPME) and needle‐trap micro‐extraction (NTME) – for the analysis of complex VOC patterns. For SPME, a 75 μm Carboxen®/polydimethylsiloxane fiber was used. The NTME needle was packed with divinylbenzene, Carbopack X and Carboxen 1000. The headspace was sampled bi‐directionally. Seventy‐two VOCs were calibrated by reference standard mixtures in the range of 0.041–62.24 nmol L−1 by means of GC–MS. Both pre‐concentration methods were applied to profile VOCs from cultures of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis. Limits of detection ranged from 0.004 to 3.93 nmol L−1 (median = 0.030 nmol L−1) for NTME and from 0.001 to 5.684 nmol L−1 (median = 0.043 nmol L−1) for SPME. NTME showed advantages in assessing polar compounds such as alcohols. SPME showed advantages in reproducibility but disadvantages in sensitivity for N‐containing compounds. Micro‐extraction techniques such as SPME and NTME are well suited for trace VOC profiling over cultures if the limitations of each technique is taken into account.  相似文献

In this study, the solid-phase extraction (SPE) method combined with thermal desorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) method is evaluated for the analysis of liquid-phase volatile organic compounds (LVOCs). Calibration experiments were performed on a number of polar and nonpolar LVOCs (including aromatic compounds, ester, ketones, and alcohol) as a function of solution pH. If the relative sensitivity of the SPE-TD-GC-MS method is compared between different VOCs across a wide range of pH (1, 4, 7, 10, and 13), optimum sensitivities for most VOCs are derived at the neutral pH. However, there were some exceptions to the general trend with the maximum sensitivity occurring either at a moderately basic pH (methyl isobutyl ketone and butyl acetate) or extremely acidic conditions (isobutyl alcohol). It was also noticed that the relative ordering of sensitivity was changed, as the pH conditions of the solution vary. The use of internal standard (IS: chlorobenzene) resulted in a notable improvement in both relative sensitivity and reproducibility for most compounds.  相似文献

The extraction of the following metals from aqueous solutions containing excess bromide with methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone MIBK has been investigated:—Cu(I), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Fe(II), Fe(III), Al(III), Mn(II), Sn(II) and Sn(IV). The use of MEK was found to be strictly limited by its solubility in acidic aqueous solutions. Determinations of the formulae of the extracted compounds were attempted in two cases but were found to be not wholly satisfactory and were discontinued. An interesting reaction between the cupric bromide complex and the solvents was noticed. Separations of Fe(IIl) from Mn(II), Fe(III) from Al(III), Fe(III) from Co(Il) and Fe(III) from Ni(II) could be achieved under suitable conditions.  相似文献

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors in cattle rumen gas have been characterized by in-vivo headspace sampling by solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and analysis by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry–olfactometry (GC–MS–O). A novel device enabling headspace SPME (HS-SPME) sampling through a cannula was designed, refined, and used to collect rumen gas samples from steers. A Carboxen–polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fiber (85 μm) was used for SPME sampling. Fifty VOCs from ten chemical groups were identified in the rumen headspace. The VOCs identified had a wide range of molecular weight (MW) (34 to 184), boiling point (−63.3 to 292 °C), vapor pressure (1.05 × 10−5 to 1.17 × 102 Pa), and water solubility (0.66 to 1 × 106 mg L−1). Twenty-two of the compounds have a published odor detection thresholds (ODT) of less than 1 ppm. More than half of the compounds identified are reactive and have an estimated atmospheric lifetime of <24 h. The amounts of VFAs, sulfide compounds, phenolic compounds, and skatole, and the odor intensity of VFAs and sulfide compounds in the rumen gas were all higher after feeding than before feeding. These results indicate that rumen gases can be an important potential source of aerial emissions of reactive VOCs and odor. In-vivo sampling by SPME then GC–MS–O analysis can be a useful tool for qualitative characterization of rumen gases, digestion, and its relationship to odor and VOC formation. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) has been applied to the quantitative analysis of 60 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in drinking water. Equilibration curves for the partitioning of the VOCs between the fiber coating and fortified water obtained at 20, 50, and 80 °C are found between the theoretical curves for completely agitated and non-agitated samples. Two important factors for the amount adsorbed by the SPME fiber coating are the extraction time and the fiber coating/water distribution coefficient, KFW . Both depend on the sample temperature, but in a counteracting manner: Increasing the temperature shortened the equilibration times, especially for the heavier VOCs, but also lead to lower KFW values, and consequently a lower sensitivity of the method. KFW values are determined for 33 of the VOCs at 40, 60, and 80°C and the heats of adsorption,–ΔH, are calculated. The nature of the adsorption is found to be exothermic which explains the decreasing sensitivity of the method with increasing temperature. Detection limits were typically from 20 ng/l to 200 ng/l, except for the very light VOCs with which detection difficulties were encountered. For all of the VOCs the linear range extended from the lowest concentration at which they were actually detected to at least 5 mg/l. The precision, 3% average standard deviation when an internal standard was used, was satisfactory for most quantitative routine analysis. SPME was also applied to head-space (HS) analysis of drinking water through the coupled equilibrium between water/head-space/fiber coating. HS-SPME is demonstrated to have shorter equilibration times than SPME directly from the water and equal sensitivities, except for the very light VOCs. Water samples from a drinking water plant contaminated in the low μg/l range with 1,1,1-trichloroethane, trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene were analyzed. There seems to be a reasonable agreement between results obtained by SPME and purge & trap. It is concluded that SPME has a great potential for drinking water analysis.  相似文献

Mercury(II)-chloride reacts with anhydrous methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and cyclohexanone in a precise stoichiometry ratio (1:2), and weakly ionized compounds of mercury with ketones are formed and equivalent quantity of HCl is released. The application of a mercury anode for the quantitative generation of H+ ions in 0.25 M sodium perchlorate in anhydrous methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and cyclohexanone has been investigated. Current/potentials curves for the solvents, titrated bases, indicator and mercury showed that in these solvents mercury is oxidized at potentials much more negative than those for the titrated bases and other components present in the solution. The protons generated in this way have been used for the titration of some organic bases, with either visual or potentiometric end-point detection. The oxidation of mercury in methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone and cyclohexanone and the reaction of mercury ions with these solvents have been found to proceed with 100% current efficiency.  相似文献

In this study, the sorptive loss patterns for volatile organic compounds were evaluated by gaseous standards containing 13 compounds (benzene, toluene, styrene, p‐xylene, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, isobutyl alcohol, butyl acetate, acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, isovaleraldehyde, and valeraldehyde). The gaseous standards, prepared initially at two contrasting concentration levels (40 and 4000 ppb) in a polyester aluminum bag, were measured after two consecutive transfers into empty bags. It indicates that the percent loss patterns, if assessed for all 13 target compounds, are affected most sensitively by the initial concentration levels of samples to yield 2.62 ± 2.22% (at 40 ppb) and 9.57 ± 6.74% (at 4000 ppb). Moreover, the sorptive loss patterns at high concentration samples (4000 ppb) tend to increase in relation with increasing molecular weight of target compounds, although such pattern disappears in low concentration samples (40 ppb). The observed loss patterns, if evaluated in relation to some key parameters like concentration or compound type, suggest the possibility that the sorptive loss of target compounds in storage media can occur in a predictable manner.  相似文献

A relatively noninvasive method consisting of a face mask sampling device, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers, and a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for the identification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in bovine breath was developed. Breath of three morbid steers with respiratory tract infections and three healthy steers were sampled seven times in 19 days for 15 min at each sampling. The breath VOCs adsorbed on the divinylbenzene (DVB)-Carboxen-polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) 50/30 microm SPME fibers were transported to a laboratory GC-MS system for separation and identification with an in-house spectral library of standard chemicals. A total of 21 VOCs were detected, many of them for the first time in cattle breath. Statistical analyses using Chi-square test on the frequency of detection of each VOC in each group was performed. The presence of acetaldehyde (P < or = 0.05) and decanal (P < or = 0.10) were associated more with clinically morbid steers while methyl acetate, heptane, octanal, 2,3-butadione, hexanoic acid, and phenol were associated with healthy steers at P < or = 0.10. The results suggest that noninvasive heath screening using breath analyses could become a useful diagnostic tool for animals and humans.  相似文献

The nitrogen-containing analogue of 18-crown-6, 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexa-azaoctadecane (hexacyclen)] was studied as a reagent for complexation and extraction of some metal ions. It was found that with this reagent and methyl isobutyl ketone, metal ions such as silver(I), mercury(II), copper(II), platinum(II) and palladium(II) can be quantitatively extracted and separated from iron(III) and some other metal ions.  相似文献

The simultaneous determination of several odorous trichlorobromophenols in water has been carried out by an in-sample derivatization headspace solid-phase microextraction method (HS-SPME).The analytical procedure involved their derivatization to methyl ethers with dimethyl sulfate/NaOH and further HS-SPME and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS) determination. Parameters affecting both the derivatization efficiency and headspace SPME procedures, such as the selection of the SPME fiber coating, derivatization–extraction time and temperature, were studied. The commercially available polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) 100 μm and Carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane-divinylbenzene (CAR-PDMS-DVB) fibers appeared to be the most suitable for the simultaneous determination of these compounds. The precision of the HS-SPME/GC/MS method gave good relative standard deviations (RSDs) run-to-run between 9% and 19% for most of them, except for 2,5-diCl-6-Br-phenol, 2,6-diCl-3-Br-phenol and-2,3,6-triBr-phenol (22%, 25% and 23%, respectively). The method was linear over two orders of magnitude, and detection limits were compound dependent but ranged from 0.22 ng/l to 0.95 ng/l. The results obtained for water samples using the proposed SPME procedure were compared with those found with the EPA 625 method, and good agreement was achieved. Therefore, the in-sample derivatization HS-SPME/GC/MS procedure here proposed is a suitable method for the simultaneous determination of odorous trichlorobromophenols in water.  相似文献

This work presents the usefulness of five different solid-phase microextraction fibers in the screening of volatile organic compound (VOC) traces in air samples. The performances of these fibers are compared by studying the sorption kinetics in an equimolar gaseous mixture of eleven VOCs. For each fiber, static and dynamic sampling are compared. It is shown that repeatability is better for the dynamic mode (less than 6% for dynamic sampling and 10% for static sampling). The equilibrium time and the sensitivity vary considerably from one fiber type to another. As an example, the classical polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating presented the shortest equilibration time (5 min) but also the poorest sensitivity, whereas the PDMS-Carboxen showed the longest extraction time but the greatest sensitivity. The estimation of the quantity of VOCs fixed on the target fiber allows for the determination of the different affinities of the compounds with the involved sorbent and relates them with physicochemical properties of the molecules. Competitive sorption is observed for the fibers involved with the adsorption process (i.e., PDMS-divinylbenzene and PDMS-Carboxen fibers). These competitions can lead to SPME calibration problems and thus bad quantitative analysis.  相似文献

Liquid- or gas-phase standards can be used for the analysis of VOCs in air. Once the accuracy is secured in the standard preparation stage, the use of gas-phase standard should be more reliable with the least matrix effect. However, it is not difficult to find that the liquid-phase standard is used more preferably in many laboratories for several reasons (e.g., low expense, easy handling, etc.). As such, one needs to accurately evaluate any possible bias stemming from the use of different standard phases. To this end, standards for 8 VOCs consisting of 4 aromatic compounds (benzene (B), toluene (T), styrene (S) and p-xylene (p-X)) and 4 others (methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), butyl acetate (BuAc), and isobutyl alcohol (i-BuAl)) were prepared in both liquid and gas phases. Each standard was analyzed by the initial collection on the adsorption tube and by the combined application of thermal-desorption–gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD/GC/MS). The results indicated that experimental bias between the two phases, if expressed in terms of percent difference (PD), was very low in many target VOCs (B (1.09%), T (2.41%), p-X (3.64%), MEK (6.76%), and MIBK (0.17%)), while it was not in some targets (e.g., >10%: e.g., S, i-BuAl, and BuAc). In an ancillary experiment, biases were evaluated further by (1) calibrating gaseous samples against liquid phase standard and via (2) comparison between two different types of gas phase standards. In conclusion, treatment of different standards (e.g., between the same or different phases) will inevitably induce biases in most VOCs, although certain volatiles (e.g., benzene, MIBK, etc.) are virtually unaffected by such variables in a practical sense.  相似文献

An analytical procedure based on manual dynamic headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) method and the conventional extraction method by liquid-liquid extraction (LLE), were compared for their effectiveness in the extraction and quantification of volatile compounds from commercial whiskey samples. Seven extraction solvents covering a wide range of polarities and two SPME fibres coatings, has been evaluated. The highest amounts extracted, were achieved using dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) by LLE method (LLECH2Cl2) and using a CAR/PDMS fibre (SPMECAR/PDMS) in HS-SPME. Each method was used to determine the responses of 25 analytes from whiskeys and calibration standards, in order to provide sensitivity comparisons between the two methods. Calibration curves were established in a synthetic whiskey and linear correlation coefficient (r) were greater than 0.9929 for LLECH2Cl2 and 0.9935 for SPMECAR/PDMS, for all target compounds. Recoveries greater than 80% were achieved. For most compounds, precision (expressed by relative standard deviation, R.S.D.) are very good, with R.S.D. values lower than 14.78% for HS-SPME method and than 19.42% for LLE method. The detection limits ranged from 0.13 to 19.03 μg L−1 for SPME procedure and from 0.50 to 12.48 μg L−1 for LLE.A tentative study to estimate the contribution of a specific compound to the aroma of a whiskey, on the basis of their odour activity values (OAV) was made. Ethyl octanoate followed by isoamyl acetate and isobutyl alcohol, were found the most potent odour-active compounds.  相似文献

In this study, the analytical compatibility of the gas chromatographic (GC) approach was evaluated through a cross‐calibration exercise. To this end, three aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs: benzene, toluene, and p‐xylene (BTX)) were simultaneously analyzed with four individual instrumental setups (type I = GC with MS plus solid phase microextraction (SPME) method, II = GC with flame ionization detection (FID) plus SPME, III = fast GC‐FID plus SPME, and IV = GC‐FID plus air server/thermal desorption (AS/TD) method). A comparison of basic quality assurance (QA) data revealed considerable differences in DL values among the methods with moderate variabilities in the intercompound sensitivity. In light of the differences in detection properties, the analytical bias involved for each methodological approach was assessed by the relative relationship between analytes and basic operating conditions. The results suggest that the analysis of environmental samples at ultra‐low concentration levels (at or below ppb level) can be subject to diverse sources of bias. Although detection properties of target compounds seem to be affected by the combined effects of various factors, changes in the sample concentration levels were seen to be the most consistent under the experimental setups analyzed in this study.  相似文献
