Inelastic helium atom scattering has been used to investigate the vibrational dynamics at the polymer vacuum interface of poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, and polybutadiene thin films on SiO(x)Si(100). Experiments were performed for a large range of surface temperatures below and above the glass transition of these three polymers. The broad multiphonon feature that arises in the inelastic scattering spectra at surface temperatures between 175 and 500 K is indicative of the excitation of a continuum of surface vibrational modes. Similarities exist in the line shapes of the scattering spectra, indicating that helium atoms scatter from groups of similar mass on the surface of these polymer thin films. The line shapes obtained were further analyzed using a semiclassical scattering model. This study has shown that quite different polymer thin films can have similar interfacial dynamics at the topmost molecular layer.  相似文献

Carboxylic acid-terminated monolayers on crystalline silicon surfaces can be readily modified with biological macromolecules for the fabrication of semiconductor-based biosensing devices. They were prepared by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of alkoxycarbonyl (ester)-terminated monolayers and studied by vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The C-H vibration region of the SFG spectra consists of strong methyl bands with significant contributions from methylene stretching modes, indicating that these monolayers are generally ordered but with considerable gauche defects in the alkyl chains in comparison with n-alkyl monolayers. After hydrolysis, the methylene stretching modes prevail, with "residues" of the methyl bands, indicating incomplete hydrolysis and disruption of the monolayer structure. This work demonstrates that SFG is capable of providing quantitative information on structure-reactivity correlations in organic monolayers.  相似文献

In IR and Raman spectral studies, the congestion of the vibrational modes in the C-H stretching region between 2800 and 3000 cm(-1) has complicated spectral assignment, conformational analysis, and structural and dynamics studies, even with quite a few of the simplest molecules. To resolve these issues, polarized spectra measurement on a well aligned sample is generally required. Because the liquid interface is generally ordered and molecularly thin, and sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS) is an intrinsically coherent polarization spectroscopy, SFG-VS can be used for discerning details in vibrational spectra of the interfacial molecules. Here we show that, from systematic molecular symmetry and SFG-VS polarization analysis, a set of polarization selection rules could be developed for explicit assignment of the SFG vibrational spectra of the C-H stretching modes. These polarization selection rules helped assignment of the SFG-VS spectra of vapor/alcohol (n = 1-8) interfaces with unprecedented details. Previous approach on assignment of these spectra relied on IR and Raman spectral assignment, and they were not able to give such detailed assignment of the SFG vibrational spectra. Sometimes inappropriate assignment was made, and consequently misleading conclusions on interfacial structure, conformation and even dynamics were reached. With these polarization rules in addition to knowledge from IR and Raman studies, new structural information and understanding of the molecular interactions at these interfaces were obtained, and some new spectral features for the C-H stretching modes were also identified. Generally speaking, these new features can be applied to IR and Raman spectroscopic studies in the condensed phase. Therefore, the advancement on vibrational spectra assignment may find broad applications in the related fields using IR and Raman as vibrational spectroscopic tools.  相似文献

Two-dimensional infrared vibrational spectroscopy is used to examine conformational inhomogeneity and ultrafast orientational motion within local environments of an organic photovoltaic bulk heterojunction thin film. The bulk heterojunction material consists of a mixture of the electron donor poly[2-methoxy-5-(2'-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-(1-cyanovinylene)phenylene] (CN-MEH-PPV) and the electron acceptor [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). PCBM species reside in a distribution of environments within large domains of the molecules that cause their C=O stretch modes to be inhomogeneously broadened. The molecular inhomogeneity also results in frequency dependent vibrational relaxation dynamics. The butyric acid methyl ester group of PCBM undergoes ultrafast wobbling-in-the-cone orientational motion on the 110 fs time scale within a cone semiangle of 29 degrees . The vibrational dynamics are sensitive metrics of molecular order in the material and have implications for charge mobility and degradation phenomena in organic photovoltaic devices. This report represents the first study of organic photovoltaic materials using ultrafast two-dimensional infrared vibrational spectroscopy.  相似文献

We have studied the orientation of the train segments of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) adsorbed layer at the CCl4-sapphire interface using surface-sensitive IR-visible sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. The SFG spectra of PMMA chains adsorbed on sapphire indicate ordered ester methyl groups. In comparison, we did not observe any significant contributions from the backbone methylene and alpha methyl groups, suggesting that these groups are disordered. No change in the structure of the adsorbed layer is observed upon cooling the solvent below the theta temperature; this is consistent with the picture of flat adsorbed chains on the surface. Interestingly, the orientation of the ester methyl groups of a spin-coated PMMA film at the PMMA-sapphire interface is similar to that of the same groups in the chains adsorbed from solution.  相似文献

We present sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy data on monolayer films of pure stearonitrile and mixed films of stearonitrile and ferric stearate deposited by the Langmuir Blodgett technique. Films ranging in composition from pure stearonitrile to 65% stearonitrile/35% ferric stearate deposit in a head-to-tail, Z-type architecture while films of composition <65% stearonitrile deposit in a head-to-head, tail-to-tail, Y-type structure. The vibrational spectra of the monolayer films corresponding to these two different architectures show distinct and characteristic features in their CH stretching regions. Spectral analysis indicates little difference in the modes associated with the terminal methyl groups but large differences in the methylene CH(2) vibrational modes. These spectral differences are consistent with alkyl chains that possess uncompensated methylene oscillator strength arising from portions of the chain that are bent. This behavior is consistent with the energetics expected from a close-packed monolayer of stearonitrile molecules whose CN headgroups possess sizable dipole moments and are expected to adopt a large center-to-center angle to minimize electrostatic, dipole-dipole repulsive interactions.  相似文献

Polarization modulation infrared reflectance absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS) and infrared reflectance absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) have been used to characterize the formation of a self-assembled monolayer of N-(3-dihydroxyborylphenyl)-11-mercaptoundecanamide) (abbreviated PBA) on a gold surface and the subsequent binding of various sugars to the PBA adlayer through the phenylboronic acid moiety to form a phenylboronate ester. Vibrationally resonant sum frequency generation (VR-SFG) spectroscopy confirmed the ordering of the substituted phenyl groups of the PBA adlayer on the gold surface. Solution FTIR spectra and density functional theory were used to confirm the identity of the observed vibrational modes on the gold surface of PBA with and without bound sugar. The detection of the binding of glucose on the gold surface was confirmed in part by the presence of a C-O stretching mode of glucose and the observed O-H stretching mode of glucose that is shifted in position relative to the O-H stretching mode of boronic acid. An IR marker mode was also observed at 1734 cm(-1) upon the binding of glucose. Additionally, changes in the peak profile of the B-O stretching band were observed upon binding, confirming formation of a phenylboronate ester on the gold surface. The binding of mannose and lactose were also detected primarily through the IR marker mode at approximately 1736 to 1742 cm(-1) depending on the identity of the bound sugar.  相似文献

Ultrashort pulse lasers with 6- and 20-fs durations were utilized for phthalocyanine thin film sample to induce several vibrational modes and vibration amplitude spectra were determined by multi-wavelength measurement technique. From the spectra we could identify the electronic states, which couple to two vibrational modes with frequencies of 670 and 750 cm−1. It was shown that the vibrational amplitude profile obtained by the method can be used for providing information for the assignment of the vibrational mode.  相似文献

Molecular organization at polyimide surfaces used as alignment layers in liquid crystal displays was investigated using vibrational sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy. We focus on the orientation of the long alkyl side groups at the polymer surface using polarization-selected SFG spectra of the CH(3)- and CH(2)-stretch modes of the side chain. Mechanical rubbing and baking, an accepted industrial procedure used to produce pretilt of the liquid crystal, was found to induce pronounced azimuthal anisotropy in the orientational distribution of the alkyl side chains. Orientational analysis of the SFG vibrational spectra in terms of the azimuthal and tilt angles (in and out of plane, respectively) of the alkyl side chains shows their preferential tilt along the rubbing direction, with the azimuthal distribution narrower for stronger rubbed polymer samples.  相似文献

The structure of thin films of 1- and 2-butylimidazoles adsorbed on copper and steel surfaces under air was examined using sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy in the ppp and ssp polarizations. Additionally, the SFG spectra of both isomers were recorded at 55 °C at the liquid imidazole/air interface for reference. Complementary bulk infrared, reflection-absorption infrared spectroscopy (RAIRS), and Raman spectra of both imidazoles were recorded for assignment purposes. The SFG spectra in the C-H stretching region at the liquid/air interface are dominated by resonances from the methyl end group of the butyl side chain of the imidazoles, indicating that they are aligned parallel or closely parallel to the surface normal. These are also the most prominent features in the SFG spectra on copper and steel. In addition, both the ppp and ssp spectra on copper show resonances from the C-H stretching modes of the imidazole ring for both isomers. The ring C-H resonances are completely absent from the spectra on steel and at the liquid/air interface. The relative intensities of the SFG spectra can be interpreted as showing that, on copper, under air, both butylimidazoles are adsorbed with their butyl side chains perpendicular to the interface and with the ring significantly inclined away from the surface plane and toward the surface normal. The SFG spectra of both imidazoles on steel indicate an orientation where the imidazole rings are parallel or nearly parallel to the surface. The weak C-H resonances from the ring at the liquid/air interface suggest that the tilt angle of the ring from the surface normal at this interface is significantly greater than it is on copper.  相似文献

The optical and electronic properties of aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films on a glass substrate are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Optical studies with coupling in the Kretschmann configuration reveal an angle-dependent plasma frequency in the mid-IR for p-polarized radiation, suggestive of the detection of a Drude plasma frequency. These studies are complemented by oxygen depletion density functional theory studies for the calculation of the charge carrier concentration and plasma frequency for bulk AZO. In addition, we report on the optical and physical properties of thin film adlayers of n-hexadecanethiol (HDT) and n-octadecanethiol (ODT) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on AZO surfaces using reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), contact angle, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Our characterization of the SAM deposition onto the AZO thin film reveals a range of possible applications for this conducting metal oxide.  相似文献

A novel biologically relevant composite substrate has been prepared consisting of a calcium phosphate (CaP) layer formed by magnetron sputter-coating from a hydroxyapatite (HA) target onto a gold-coated silicon substrate. The CaP layer is intended to mimic tooth and bone surfaces and allows polymers used in oral care to be deposited in a procedure analogous to that used for dental surfaces. The polymer cetyl dimethicone copolyol (CDC) was deposited onto the CaP surface of the substrate by Langmuir Blodgett deposition, and the structure of the adsorbed layer was investigated by the surface specific technique of sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. The gold sublayer provides enhancement of the SFG signal arising from the polymer but plays no part in the adsorption of the polymer. The surface morphology of the substrate was investigated using SEM and AFM. The surface roughness was commensurate with that of the thermally evaporated gold sublayer and uniform over areas of at least 36 mum(2). The chemical composition of the CaP-coated surface was determined by FTIR and TOF-SIMS. It was concluded that the surface is primarily calcium phosphate present as a mixture of amorphous, non-hydroxylated phases rather than solely stoichiometric hydroxyapatite. The SFG spectra from CDC on CaP were closely similar, both in resonance wavenumbers and in their relative intensities, with spectra of thin films of CDC recorded directly on gold. Application of previous analysis of the spectra of CDC on gold therefore enabled interpretation of the polymer orientation and conformation on the CaP substrate.  相似文献

Infrared-visible sum frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG) has been used to study the interface between poly(vinyl-N-octadecylcarbamate-co-vinyl acetate) (Comb) and deuterated or hydrogenated polystyrene (dPS or hPS) films. Strong methyl symmetric and Fermi resonance bands associated with the alkyl side chains of the Comb polymer are observed in the SFG spectra. In addition, for Comb/hPS spectra, symmetric and asymmetric vibration modes of phenyl groups are observed. The presence of asymmetric modes indicates the phenyl rings are tilted with respect to the interface normal.  相似文献

The uptake of methanol at the air-liquid interface of 0-96.5 wt % sulfuric acid (H2SO4) solutions has been observed directly using vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy. As the concentration of H2SO4 increases, the VSFG spectra reveal a surface reaction between methanol and H2SO4 to form methyl hydrogen sulfate. The surface is saturated with the methyl species after 15 min. The uptake of methyl species into the solutions by Raman spectroscopy was also observed and occurred on a much longer time scale. This suggests that uptake of methanol by sulfuric acid solutions is diffusion-limited.  相似文献

Sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectra of cadmium arachidate multilayer films adsorbed on a substrate with high nonresonant susceptibility, i.e., gold, and on a low nonresonant susceptibility substrate, i.e., fused quartz, have been investigated in the C-H stretching region in air. The films were formed by Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition and their spectra recorded using SFG spectrometers employing both 532-nm nanosecond and 800-nm femtosecond lasers, with counter-propagating and co-propagating beam geometries, respectively. Both kinds of substrate were rendered hydrophobic by coating them with per-deuterated octadecanethiol (gold) or per-deuterated cadmium arachidate (fused quartz) monolayers. Single per-protonated arachidate layers in otherwise per-deuterated 10-layer films were used to show that the SFG resonances arise only from the topmost and lowermost layers in a LB film comprised of an even number of per-protonated layers, although the SFG spectra from the two hydrophobic substrates are different from each other. The differences in the spectra from the same ten-layer per-protonated films deposited on the two types of hydrophobic substrate have been explained in terms of a simple model that accounts for resonant and nonresonant contributions.  相似文献

IR-visible sum generation spectroscopy, an interface-selective probe of molecular vibrations, is used to obtain vibrational spectra of molecular monolayers on metal and semiconductor surfaces. The spectra obey electric dipole selection rules: vibrational modes must be both Raman and infrared active to show sum frequency resonances. The orientation of molecules at the interface can be determined by interference between the resonant molecular signal and a substrate background signal. Sum generation is also observed at a buried interface in the absence of a dielectric discontinuity, suggesting uses at buried molecular structures such as polymer-polymer interfaces.  相似文献

The surface of aqueous solutions of 4-Nitro Benzo-15-Crown-5 (NB15C5) and Benzo-15-Crown-5 (B15C5) has been studied using the surface sensitive technique vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy (VSFS). The NO, CN, COC and CH vibrational modes of these compounds at the air-water interface as well as OH vibrational modes of the surface water hydrating this compound have been targeted in order to obtain molecular information about arrangement and conformation of the adsorbed crown ether molecules at the air-water interface. The CH(2) vibrational modes of crown ethers have been identified and found to be split due to interaction with ether oxygen. The spectra provide evidence for the existence of a protonated crown complex moiety at the surface leading to the appearance of strongly ordered water species. The interfacial water species are influenced by the resulting charged interface and by the strong Zundel polarizability due to tunneling of the proton species between equivalent sites within the crown ring.  相似文献

The chemisorption of 1,3,4‐oxadiazole‐2‐thiol (ODT) on gold nanorods has been investigated by using surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and density functional theory (DFT). Although most of the SERS spectra have remarkable similarity to the normal Raman spectra of the pure analyte, the adsorption of ODT on a gold surface leads to a drastic change in its Raman spectrum and distinct vibrational features are obtained with gold nanorods and spherical nanoparticles. Simulated Raman spectra for hybrid systems that consist of an oxadiazole moiety coordinated to a Au20 gold cluster provided valuable information about the coordination mode and enabled us to assign vibration modes.  相似文献

Structural and vibrational features of Na-montmorillonite and montmorillonite intercalated with tetramethylammonium cation (TMA+) were characterized theoretically and experimentally. Theoretical study was performed using density functional theory with inclusion of dispersion corrections. The analysis of the hydrogen bonds in the calculated models has shown that the Na+ cations coordinated by six water molecules (Na-M model) are bound to montmorillonite layers by moderate hydrogen bonds between water molecules and basal oxygen atoms of the tetrahedral sheets. Hydrated Na+ cations are stabilized by relatively strong hydrogen bonds among water molecules. In the intercalate model, the TMA+ cation is fixed in the interlayer space by weak hydrogen bonds between the methyl groups and basal oxygen atoms of montmorillonite layers. The calculated vibrational spectra are in a good agreement with the measured infrared spectra. The detailed analysis of the simulated vibrational spectra allowed unambiguous identification of corresponding bands in the measured spectra and their assignment to the particular vibrational modes. For example, calculations clearly distinguished between AlMgOH and AlAlOH stretching vibrations and also between the coupled vibrations of the methyl groups of the TMA+ cations.  相似文献
