This paper systematically investigates the response of colloidal liquids containing magnetic holes of different volume densities to magnetic field by conventional transmission measurements. It finds that the enhancement in the transmission of such a colloidal liquid under a magnetic field exhibits a strong dependence on the volume density of magnetic holes. A linear increase in the maximum enhancement factor is observed when the volume density of magnetic holes is below a critical level at which a maximum enhancement factor of ~150 is achieved in the near infrared region. Once the volume density of magnetic holes exceeds the critical level, a sharp drop of the maximum enhancement factor to ~2 is observed. After that, the maximum enhancement factor increases gradually till a large volume density of ~9%. By monitoring the arrangement of magnetic holes under a magnetic field, it reveals that the colloidal liquids can be classified into three different phases, i.e., the gas-like, liquid-like and solid-like phases, depending on the volume density of magnetic holes. The response behaviour of colloidal liquids to magnetic field is determined by the interaction between magnetic holes which is governed mainly by their volume density. A phase transition, which is manifested in the dramatic reduction in the maximum enhancement factor, is clearly observed between the liquid-like and solid-like phases. The optical switching operations for colloidal liquids in different phases are compared and the underlying physical mechanisms are discussed.  相似文献

The dynamical susceptibility has been introduced to characterize the dynamical heterogeneities in glass forming liquids. We have used it as a tool to investigate the slow dynamics of other disordered systems such as gels, granular media and spin glasses. We review here the results obtained via numerical simulations of different model systems. The comparative study of the behaviour of the dynamical susceptibility sheds some light on the significant differences in the complex slow dynamics of glasses, spin glasses, granular media, irreversible gels, and colloidal gels.  相似文献

The optical and structural properties of dense colloidal suspensions in the presence of long-range electrostatic repulsion are determined from both light and small-angle neutron scattering experiments. Short-range structural order induces an enhancement of the scattering strength while at the same time the total transmission shows strong wavelength dependence, reminiscent of a photonic crystal. Interestingly, the interplay between diffusive scattering and local order leads to negative values of the scattering anisotropy parameter. The tunable optical properties of these liquids furthermore suggest potential applications such as transparency switches or filters.  相似文献

We report x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy and diffusing wave spectroscopy studies of depletion gels formed from nanoscale silica colloids in solutions of nonabsorbing polymer following the cessation of shear. The two techniques provide a quantitatively coherent picture of the dynamics as ballistic or convective motion of colloidal clusters whose internal motion is arrested. While the dynamics possesses features characteristic of nonergodic soft solids, including a relaxation time that grows linearly with the time since shear, comparison with behavior of quenched supercooled liquids indicates that this evolution is not directly related to traditional aging phenomena in glasses.  相似文献

The bending mechanics of singly bonded colloidal aggregates are measured using laser tweezers. We find that the colloidal bonds are capable of supporting significant torques, providing a direct measurement of the tangential interactions between particles. A critical bending moment marks the limit of linear bending elasticity, past which small-scale rearrangements occur. These mechanical properties underlie the rheology and dynamics of colloidal gels formed by diffusion-limited cluster aggregation, and give critical insight into the contact interactions between Brownian particles.  相似文献

We investigate experimentally the diffusion properties of a bidimensional bidisperse dry granular material under quasistatic cyclic shear. The comparison of these properties with results obtained both in computer simulations of hard spheres systems and Lennard-Jones liquids and experiments on colloidal systems near the glass transition demonstrates a strong analogy between the statistical behavior of granular matter and these systems, despite their intrinsic microscopic differences (thermal vs athermal). More specifically, we study in detail the cage dynamics responsible for the subdiffusion in the slow relaxation regime, and obtain the values of relevant time and length scales.  相似文献

In the free-energy landscape picture of glassy systems, their slow dynamics is due to a complicated free-energy landscape with many local minima. We show that for a colloidal glassy material multiple paths can be taken through the free-energy landscape. The evolution of the nonergodicity parameter shows two distinct master curves that we identify as gels and glasses. We show that for a range of colloid concentrations, the transition to nonergodicity can occur in either direction (gel or glass), accompanied by "hesitations" between the two. Thus, colloidal gels and glasses are merely global free-energy minima in the same free-energy landscape, and the paths leading to these minima can be complicated.  相似文献

A new approach to transport processes in dense charged as well as neutral colloidal suspensions is presented. It is based on a far-reaching analogy between dense colloidal suspensions and dense hard-sphere fluids, implying, in turn, an analogy with atomic liquids. As a result, new expressions valid for a number of colloidal transport coefficients are predicted.  相似文献

The colloidal stabilities of dispersions of unmodified and surface-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles in hydrophobic and hydrophilic imidazolium-based ionic liquids were studied with advanced rheology at three temperatures (25, 100, and 200 °C). The rheological behavior of the dispersions was strongly affected by the ionic liquids hydrophilicity, by the nanoparticles surface, by the concentration of the nanoparticles in the dispersion as well as by the temperature. The unmodified hydrophilic nanoparticles showed a better compatibility with the hydrophilic ionic liquid. The SiO2 surface functionalization with hydrophobic groups clearly improved the colloidal stability of the dispersions in the hydrophobic ionic liquid. The temperature increase was found to lead to a destabilization in all studied systems, especially at higher concentrations. The results of this study imply that ionic liquids with tailored properties could be used in absorbers directly after reactors for gas-phase synthesis of nanoparticles or/and as solvents for their further surface functionalization without agglomeration or aggregation.  相似文献

Soft matter, like colloidal suspensions and surfactant gels, exhibit strong response to modest external perturbations. This paper reviews our recent experiments on the nonlinear flow behaviour of surfactant worm-like micellar gels. A rich dynamic behaviour exhibiting regular, quasi-periodic, intermittency and chaos is observed. In particular, we have shown experimentally that the route to chaos is via Type-II intermittency in shear thinning worm-like micellar solution of cetyltrimethylammonium tosylate where the strength of flow-concentration coupling is tuned by the addition of sodium chloride. A Poincaré first return map of the time series and the probability distribution of laminar length between burst events show that our data are consistent with Type-II intermittency. The existence of a ‘Butterfly’ intensity pattern in small angle light scattering (SALS) measurements performed simultaneously with the rheological measurements confirms the coupling of flow to concentration fluctuations in the system under study. The scattered depolarised intensity in SALS, sensitive to orientational order fluctuations, shows the same time-dependence (like intermittency) as that of shear stress.  相似文献

First results on electric field induced aggregation in a novel colloidal film are presented. The aggregate appears as a dark structure on the shiny background of the metallic colloidal film that forms at the interface between two immiscible liquids. A variety of shapes are observed, ranging from compact circular, to highly ramified dendritic ones, depending on control parameters such as voltage and chemical composition. The aggregation process was investigated for a wide range of parameters by video photography and subsequent pattern analysis, as well as by Auger spectroscopic measurements of dried samples. A new type of mechanism—a combination of electroaggregation of the colloid particles and electrodeposition of metal ions—is proposed to account for the observations.  相似文献

We numerically study dynamics and correlation length scales of a colloidal liquid in both quiescent and sheared conditions to further understand the origin of slow dynamics and dynamic heterogeneity in glass-forming systems. The simulation is performed in a weakly frustrated two-dimensional liquid, where locally preferred order is allowed to develop with increasing density. The four-point density correlations and bond-orientation correlations, which have been frequently used to capture dynamic and static length scales ξ in a quiescent condition, can be readily extended to a system under steady shear in this case. In the absence of shear, we confirmed the previous findings that the dynamic slowing down accompanies the development of dynamic heterogeneity. The dynamic and static length scales increase with α-relaxation time τ(α) as a power law [Formula: see text], with μ?>?0. In the presence of shear, both viscosity and τ(α) have power-law dependences on shear rate in the marked shear-thinning regime. However, the dependence of correlation lengths cannot be described by power laws in the same regime. Furthermore, the relation [Formula: see text] between length scales and dynamics holds for not too strong shear where thermal fluctuations and external forces are both important in determining the properties of dense liquids. Thus, our results demonstrate a link between slow dynamics and structure in glass-forming liquids even under nonequilibrium conditions.  相似文献

Binary mixtures of hard sphere-like colloidal particles, of the same size but different polymer composition, when suspended in some liquids phase separate and form crystals with the Cesium Chloride structure. We attribute this behavior to a cross-attraction between particles of the different species. In other suspending liquids this apparent cross-attraction is absent; hard sphere-like behavior is observed with the expected randomly stacked close packed crystal structure with no positional correlation of the two particle types.  相似文献

We derive an expression for the nonequilibrium segregation coefficient of colloidal particles near a moving solid-liquid interface. The resulting kinetic phase diagram has applications for the rapid solidification of clay soils, gels, and related colloidal systems. We use it to explain the formation of bandlike defects in rapidly solidified alumina suspensions.  相似文献

We study the sedimentation of colloidal gels by using a combination of light scattering, polarimetry and video imaging. The asymptotic concentration profiles (z,t → ∞) exhibit remarkable scaling properties: profiles for gels prepared at different initial volume fractions and particle interactions can be superimposed onto a single master curve by using suitable reduced variables. We show theoretically that this behavior stems from a power law dependence of the compressive elastic modulus versus , which we directly test experimentally. The sedimentation kinetics comprises an initial latency stage, followed by a rapid collapse where the gel height h decreases at constant velocity and a final compaction stage characterized by a stretched exponential relaxation of h toward a plateau. Analogies and differences with previous works are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We numerically study the jamming transition in particulate systems with attraction by investigating their mechanical response at zero temperature (T=0). We find three regimes of mechanical behavior separated by two critical transitions--connectivity and rigidity percolation. The transitions belong to different universality classes than their lattice counterparts, due to force balance constraints. We also find that these transitions are unchanged at low temperatures and resemble gelation transitions in experiments on colloidal and silica gels.  相似文献

Using videomicroscopy imaging, we demonstrate the existence of a short-ranged equilibrium attraction between heavy silica colloids diffusing on soft surfaces of cross-linked polymer gels. The intercolloid potential can be tuned by changing the gel stiffness or by coating the colloids with a polymer layer. On sufficiently soft substrates, the interaction induced by the polymer matrix leads to large-scale colloidal aggregation. We correlate the in-plane interaction with a colloid-surface attraction.  相似文献
