The free energy dependence of the electro-chemiluminescence quantum yield is specified, with the Markovian encounter theory accounting for the reversibility of triplet production competing with the irreversible recombination to the ground state. It is shown that diffusional ion recombination is highly inhomogeneous in space. It proceeds at either large positive ionization free energy (mainly to the triplet product) or at large negative free energy when recombination to the ground state dominates. On the contrary at medium free energies, the quasi-resonant generation of triplets is under kinetic control and therefore much more homogeneous. In this case, both recombination products are generated in comparable amounts. The multiple reversible ionization is shown to act as an independent quenching mechanism previously unknown. The role of the triplet quenching at the electrode is also specified. These effects reduce noticeably the luminescence quantum yield but only at larger triplet life times and in different free energy regions.  相似文献

The integral encounter theory (IET) has been extended to the reactions limited by diffusion along the reaction coordinate to the level crossing points where either thermal or hot electron transfer occurs. IET describes the bimolecular ionization of the instantaneously excited electron donor D* followed by the hot geminate backward transfer which precedes the ion pair equilibration and its subsequent thermal recombination. We demonstrate that the fraction of ion pairs which avoids the hot recombination is much smaller than their initial number when the electron tunneling is strong.  相似文献

To make the effects of molecular size on photoinduced electron-transfer (ET) reactions clear, the ET fluorescence quenching of aromatic hydrocarbons by trivalent lanthanide ions M3+ (europium ion Eu3+ and ytterbium ion Yb3+) and the following ET reactions such as the geminate and free radical recombination were studied in acetonitrile. The rate constant k(q) of fluorescence quenching, the yields of free radical (phi(R)) and fluorescer triplet (phi(T)) in fluorescence quenching, and the rate constant k(rec) of free radical recombination were measured. Upon analysis of the free energy dependence of k(q), phi(R), phi(T), and k(rec), it was found that the switchover of the fluorescence quenching mechanism occurs at deltaG(fet) = -1.4 to -1.6 eV: When deltaG(fet) < -1.6 eV, the fluorescence quenching by M3+ is induced by a long-distance ET yielding the geminate radical ion pairs. When deltaG(fet) > -1.4 eV, it is induced by an exciplex formation. The exciplex dissociates rapidly to yield either the fluorescer triplet or the geminate radical ion pairs. The large shift of switchover deltaG(fet) from -0.5 eV for aromatic quenchers to -1.4 to -1.6 eV for lanthanide ions is almost attributed to the difference in the molecular size of the quenchers. Furthermore, it was substantiated that the free energy dependence of ET rates for the geminate and free radical recombination is satisfactorily interpreted within the limits of the Marcus theory.  相似文献

Substituted polythiophene and triethylenglycolpyrrolidino-C(60) blends are examined by time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance (TR-EPR) at different temperatures. TR-EPR spectra recorded on the microsecond time scale after a short laser pulse are assigned to polythiophene and fullerene radical ion pairs, generated by electron transfer from the excited state of polythiophene to fullerene. At low temperatures, TR-EPR spectra show polarized lines with an antiphase emission/absorption pattern. The origin of the polarization pattern is described in the frame of spin correlated radical pair theory, in which two unpaired electron spins (on radical cation and anion, respectively) interact through isotropic spin exchange and anisotropic dipolar interactions. The polarization pattern is accounted for assuming a singlet excited state as the precursor of the charge-separated state. Spectral simulations yield dipolar and spin exchange coupling constants between unpaired electrons of the radical ion pair. Their values correspond to a mean distance between opposite charges of 22 A. When the temperature is increased, the spectra gradually loose their antiphase character and eventually consist of a signal totally in emission. This behavior is explained by a polarization mechanism involving a spin-selective charge recombination (ST(-1) mixing). The polarization pattern at different temperatures is examined in detail, and its generating mechanism is discussed.  相似文献

In the framework of a recently suggested recombination model it is shown that an increase of the initial ion concentration caused by higher irradiation doses leads to an increase of the fraction of ions recombining in the volume. This effect is represented for two different rate functions R/t/ assumed to describe the recombination rate for single ion pairs. Finally consequences of the volume recombination effect on the product yield of a competitive ion-scavenger reaction and for the determination of the real survival probability of the isolated ion pairs are discussed.  相似文献

The ultrafast ground state recovery (GSR) dynamics of the radical cation of perylene, Pe(*+), generated upon bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer in acetonitrile, has been investigated using pump-pump-probe spectroscopy. With 1,4-dicyanobenzene as electron acceptor, the free ion yield is substantial and the GSR dynamics of Pe(*+) was found to depend on the time delay between the first and second pump pulses, Deltat(12), i.e., on the "age" of the ion. At short Deltat(12), the GSR dynamics is biphasic, and at Deltat(12) larger than about 500 ps, it becomes exponential with a time constant around 3 ps. With trans-1,2-dicyanoethylene as acceptor, the free ion yield is essentially zero and the GSR dynamics of Pe(*+) remains biphasic independently of Deltat(12). The change of dynamics observed with 1,4-dicyanobenzene is ascribed to the transition from paired to free solvated ion, because in the pair, the excited ion has an additional decay channel to the ground state, i.e., charge recombination followed by charge separation. The rate constants deduced from the analysis of these GSR dynamics are all fully consistent with this hypothesis.  相似文献

The Stern-Volmer constants for either pulse-induced or stationary fluorescence being quenched by a contact charge transfer are calculated and their free energy dependencies (the free energy gap laws) are specified. The reversibility of charge transfer is taken into account as well as spin conversion in radical ion pairs, followed by their recombination in either singlet or triplet neutral products. The natural decay of triplets as well as their impurity quenching by ionization are accounted for when estimating the fluorescence quantum yield and its free energy dependence.  相似文献

A review of the results of computer simulation of the diffusion controlled recombination of ions is presented. The ions generated in clusters of two and three pairs of oppositely charged ions were considered. The recombination kinetics and the ion escape probability at infinite time with and without external electric field have been computed. These results are compared with the calculations based on the single-pair theory.  相似文献

The effect of an external magnetic field on the yield of the benzophenone ketyl radical has been investigated by a new, double-pulse technique. The technique and its variants can be used not only for studying geminate recombination of photochemically produced radical pairs but also for continuous photoelectric recording of fluorescence spectra of the free radicals which can be generated by nitrogen laser irradiation.  相似文献

The recombination dynamics of ion pairs formed by the photoexcitation of donor—acceptor complexes in a polar solvent was investigated using the stochastic approach. The reorganization of high-frequency intramolecular vibrational modes plays an important role in these reactions. It was shown for the perylene—tetracyanoethylene complex in acetonitrile solution that the overwhelming majority of ion pairs recombined at the hot stage, during solvent polarization relaxation.  相似文献

A new approach to determination of the recombination rate of radical ion pairs in moderately polar solvents is presented. It is based on an investigation of transient photocurrents caused by dissociation of exciplexes generated in photoinduced electron transfer reactions. It has been shown that the recombination rate of geminate ion pairs can be found from the photocurrent rise time. We have applied such an approach to transient photocurrents observed by Hirata et al. [Y. Hirata, Y. Kanda, N. Mataga, J. Phys. Chem. 87 (1983) 1659] for the pyrene/dicyanobenzene system in solvents of moderate polarity. The increase of the obtained recombination rate of photogenerated ions with increasing polarity of solvent testifies that ions recombine mainly by the backward electron transfer from the dicyanobenzene anions to solvent-separated cations of pyrene.  相似文献

The charge recombination (CR) dynamics of geminate ion pairs formed by excitation of the ground-state donor-acceptor complexes in polar solvent have been investigated within the framework of stochastic approach. It is shown that for low exergonic reactions these dynamics critically depend on the reorganization energy of intramolecular high-frequency mode. Even moderate reorganization energies (0.1-0.2 eV) significantly accelerate the excited-state population decay making it nearly exponential. In the solvent-controlled regime, the majority of the excited donor-acceptor complexes recombine at nonthermal (hot) stage when the nonequilibrium initial wave packet passes through a number of term crossings corresponding to the transitions with creation of several vibrational quanta. Analysis of this mechanism allows to conclude (i) the CR in viscous solvents proceeds much faster than the diffusive relaxation of solvent, (ii) under certain conditions, the CR rate becomes practically independent of the diffusive component of solvent relaxation which is determined by solvent viscosity, (iii) in contrast to predictions of Marcus theory, the CR rate decreases monotonically with the rise of reaction exergonicity even at small free energy gaps, in accordance with experimental results. Two semiquantitative approaches providing rather simple analytical expressions for the hot charge recombination dynamics are suggested. These approximations give a good reproduction of the excited-state decay in the wide area of model parameters.  相似文献

Excited state formation by ion recombination in solutions of fluorene in squalene has been studied by pulse radiolysis at the center of a large electromagnet. The products of the slower part of the ion recombination are affected by an applied magnetic field. The fluorescence yield increases by a factor of about 1.5 whereas the triplet yield decreases.  相似文献

The photodetachment of aqueous hydroxide (OH(?)(aq) and OD(?)(aq)) is studied using femtosecond pump?probe and pump?repump?probe spectroscopy. The electron is detached after excitation of the hydroxide ion to a charge-transfer-to-solvent (CTTS) state at 202 nm. An early intermediate is observed that builds up within 160 fs and is assigned to nonequilibrated OH?electron pairs. The subsequent dynamics are governed by thermalization, partial recombination, and dissociation of the pairs, yielding the final hydrated electrons and hydroxyl radicals. An additional pulse at 810 nm is used for secondary excitation of the intermediate species so that more insight is gained into the recombination process(es). Using this technique we observe a novel geminate recombination channel of OH with adjacent hydrated electrons. This channel leads to ultrafast quenching (700 fs) of almost half the initial number of radicals. The fast mechanism displays an isotope effect of 1.4 (for OD(?)(aq) quantum yield 35%, time constant 1.0 ps). This process was not observed in similar experiments on aqueous bromide and seems to be related to the special properties of the hydroxide ion and its local H-bonding environment. Our findings underline the high reactivity of the prehydrated electron.  相似文献

The majority of free radicals are highly reactive species which participate in bimolecular reactions with each other. Validation of the theory of molecular diffusion and reactivity in the liquid state requires knowledge of rate constants of radical–radical reactions (recombination, disproportionation) and their viscosity dependencies. An accurate comparison of theory and experiment has become available due to experimentally measured diffusion coefficients of reactive radicals by transient grating technique. Initial distribution of radicals in solution can be not random but pair-wise as in photo- or thermoinitiation of free radical polymerization reactions. Probability of a radical escape of a partner (cage escape) characterizes the initiator efficiency. Despite decades of measurement of cage effect values, cage effect dynamics with free radicals have only been investigated quite recently. The present tutorial review considers the effect of viscosity of Newtonian liquid on two types of recombination—in the solvent bulk and in a cage. Further, since radicals are paramagnetic species, external magnetic field affects probability of their reactions in pairs. These effects are also observed in viscous liquids, and reasons for such observations are explained. The recently discovered low magnetic field effect is also observed on radical pairs in viscous liquids.  相似文献

Calculations for the acetanilide crystal yield the effective polarizability (16.6 A(3)), local electric field tensor, effective dipole moment (5.41 D), and dipole-dipole energy (-12.8 kJ/mol). Fourier-transform techniques are used to calculate the polarization energy P for a single charge in the perfect crystal (-1.16 eV); the charge-dipole energy W(D) is zero if the crystal carries no bulk dipole moment. Polarization energies for charge-transfer (CT) pairs combine with the Coulomb energy E(C) to give the screened Coulomb energy E(scr); screening is nearly isotropic, with E(scr) approximately E(C)/2.7. For CT pairs W(D) reduces to a term deltaW(D) arising from the interaction of the charge on each ion with the change in dipole moment on the other ion relative to the neutral molecule. The dipole moments calculated by density-functional theory methods with the B3LYP functional at the 6-311++G(**) level are 3.62 D for the neutral molecule, changing to 7.13 D and 4.38 D for the anion and cation, relative to the center of mass. Because of the large change in the anion, deltaW(D) reaches -0.9 eV and modifies the sequence of CT energies markedly from that of E(scr), giving the lowest two CT pairs at -1.98 eV and -1.41 eV. The changes in P and W(D) near a vacancy are calculated; W(D) changes for the individual charges because the vacancy removes a dipole moment and modifies the crystal dielectric response, but deltaW(D) and E(C) do not change. A vacancy yields a positive change DeltaP that scatters a charge or CT pair, but the change DeltaW(D) can be negative and large enough to outweigh DeltaP, yielding traps with depths that can exceed 150 meV for single charges and for CT pairs. Divacancies yield traps with depths nearly equal to the sum of those produced by the separate vacancies and so they can exceed 300 meV. These results are consistent with a mechanism of optical damage in which vacancies trap optically generated CT pairs that recombine and release energy; this can disrupt the lattice around the vacancy, thereby favoring trapping and recombination of CT pairs generated by subsequent photon absorption, leading to further lattice disruption. Revisions to previous calculations on trapping of CT pairs in anthracene are reported.  相似文献

The quantum yields of triplets and free radicals (or radical ions) that escaped recombination in photochemically created primary radical pairs (or radical ion pairs) are calculated. As the products of monomolecular photodissociation, the neutral radicals appear at contact, while the ions are initially distributed over the space due to distant photoionization (bimolecular electron transfer) in the liquid solution. The diffusional dependence of the quantum yields is shown to be different when recombination starts from contact or from separated reactants. The experimental data for recombination of ionized perylene with aromatic amine counterions is well fitted with the noncontact initial distribution provided the recombination is also noncontact and even more distant than ionization.  相似文献

The excited-state intrinsic proton transfer and its geminate recombination, as well as the ground-state equilibria, of 1-methyl-6-hydroxyquinolinium embedded in a solid matrix of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) have been studied by measuring time-resolved and steady-state fluorescence spectra along with absorption and excitation spectra. Proton transfer takes place within 3.3 ns to form ion pairs while its back-reaction occurs on the time scale of 3.7 ns. The ion pairs in the rigid alcoholic matrix go through neither diffusion to form free ions nor subsequent electronic rearrangement to form the keto species within their excited-state lifetimes.  相似文献

Doubly charged sodiated and permethylated linear malto-oligosaccharides ({Glc}6-{Glc}9), branched N-linked glycans (high-mannose type GlcNAc2Man5-9, and complex asialo- and disialylated-biantennary glycans) were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry using collisionally-activated dissociation (CAD) and "hot" electron capture dissociation (ECD) available in a custom-built ESI FTICR mass spectrometer. For linear permethylated malto-oligosaccharides, both CAD and "hot" ECD produced glycosidic cleavages (B, Y, C, and Z ions), cross-ring cleavages (A- and X-type), and internal cleavages (B/Y and C/Y type) to provide sequence and linkage information. For the branched N-linked glycans, CAD and "hot" ECD provided complementary structural information. CAD generated abundant B and Y fragment ions by glycosidic cleavages, whereas "hot" ECD produced dominant C and Z ions. A-type cross-ring cleavages were present in CAD spectra. Complementary A- and X-type cross-ring fragmentation pairs were generated by "hot" ECD, and these delineated the branching patterns and linkage positions. For example, 0, 4An and 3, 5An ions defined the linkage position of the major branch as the 6-position of the central core mannose residue. The internal fragments observed in CAD were more numerous and abundant than in "hot" ECD spectra. Since the triply charged (sodiated) molecular ion of the permethylated disialylated-biantennary N-linked glycan has relatively high abundance, it was isolated and fragmented in a "hot" ECD experiment and extensive fragment ions (glycosidic and complementary pairs of cross-ring cleavages) were generated to fully confirm the sequence, branching, and linkage assignments for this glycan.  相似文献
