Electron and phonon spectra are derived for an electron-phonon system coupled by the Fröhlich interaction. We cover the range from small coupling <1 to large coupling 1 for a commensurate filling of the bare band. The evolution of the Migdal solution into a charge density wave and finally into a regular lattice of small polarons is studied.  相似文献

Extending earlier work of Littlewood (1987) a theory for the collective mode (Fröhlich mode) response of weakly pinned charge density waves (CDW) is given. Long range Coulomb interaction is incorporated in both a proper definition of the measured ac conductivity CDW() and in the Fukuyama-Lee-Rice treatment of phason dynamics. The frequency and wave number dependent quasi particle resistivity is shown to appear only in the internal phason lines in the perturbation expansion of the impurity averaged phason propagatorD ren. Quantitative results for CDW() are evaluated within the self-consistent Born approximation toD ren in three spatial dimensions taking anisotropy into account. Besides the low frequency relaxation mode we find a significant effect of the longitudinal optical phason LO on the Fröhlich mode pinning frequency when descreening sets in at low temperatures. This is yet another manifestation of selection rule breaking by inhomogeneous pinning and establishes the special role that LO plays in the dynamics of CDW. An explicit analytical formula for CDW() is given and discussed in some detail including the important analyticity properties. Available measurements of the linear ac response in a wide range of frequencies and conductivities are compared with the theory and found to agree with the theoretical predictions supporting the concept of weak pinning in CDW.  相似文献

The author has recently proposed a quasi-classical theory of particles and interactions in which particles are pictured as extended periodic disturbances in a universal field (x, t), interacting with each other via nonlinearity in the equation of motion for . The present paper explores the relationship of this theory to nonrelativistic quantum mechanics; as a first step, it is shown how it is possible to construct from a configuration-space wave function (x 1,x 2,t), and that the theory requires that satisfy the two-particle Schrödinger equation in the case where the two particles are well separated from each other. This suggests that the multiparticle Schrödinger equation can be obtained as a direct consequence of the quasi-classical theory without any use of the usual formalism (Hilbert space, quantization rules, etc.) of conventional quantum theory and in particular without using the classical canonical treatment of a system as a crutch theory which has subsequently to be quantized. The quasi-classical theory also suggests the existence of a preferred absolute gauge for the electromagnetic potentials.  相似文献

We show that in the ground states of the infinite-volume limits of both the spin-1/2 anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model (in dimensions d2), and the ferromagnetic Ising model in a strong transverse field (in dimensions d1) there is an interval in the spectrum above the mass gap which contains a continuous band of energy levels. We use the methods of Bricmont and Fröhlich to develop our expansions, as well as a method of Kennedy and Tasaki to do the expansions in the quantum mechanical limit. Where the expansions converge, they are then shown to have spectral measures which have absolutely continuous parts on intervals above the mass gaps.  相似文献

This is a brief reply to S. Goldstein's article Quantum theory without observers in Physics Today. It is pointed out that Bohm's pilot wave theory is successful only because it keeps Schrödinger's (exact) wave mechanics unchanged, while the rest of it is observationally meaningless and solely based on classical prejudice.  相似文献

In order to obtain sum rules and spectral representations the Hermiticity property , A = A, of observables is used. The equality of two critical points — the percolation thresholdp H and the pointp T where the cluster size distribution ceases to decay exponentially — is proven for all translation invariant independent percolation models on homogeneousd-dimensional lattices (d1). The analysis is based on a pair of new nonlinear partial differential inequalities for an order parameterM(,h), which forh=0 reduces to the percolation densityP — at the bond densityp=1–e in the single parameter case. These are: (1)MhM/h+M 2+MM/, and (2) M/|J|MM/h. Inequality (1) is intriguing in that its derivation provides yet another hint of a 3 structure in percolation models. Moreover, through the elimination of one of its derivatives, (1) yields a pair of ordinary differential inequalities which provide information on the critical exponents and . One of these resembles an Ising model inequality of Fröhlich and Sokal and yields the mean field bound 2, and the other implies the result of Chayes and Chayes that . An inequality identical to (2) is known for Ising models, where it provides the basis for Newman's universal relation and for certain extrapolation principles, which are now made applicable also to independent percolation. We give a simplified proof of the following important theorem,which is due to Borchers. Let be a von Neumann algebra with cyclic and separating vector and let U(t), t R, be a group with positive generator, which leaves fixed and induces for positive arguments endomorphisms of . The quantum formalism is a measurement formalism-a phenomenological formalism describing certain macroscopic regularities. We argue that it can be regarded, and best be understood, as arising from Bohmian mechanics, which is what emerges from Schrödinger's equation for a system of particles when we merely insist that particles means particles. While distinctly non-Newtonian, Bohmian mechanics is a fully deterministic theory of particles in motion, a motion choreographed by the wave function. We find that a Bohmian universe, though deterministic, evolves in such a manner that anappearance of randomness emerges, precisely as described by the quantum formalism and given, for example, by = ¦¦ 2. A crucial ingredient in our analysis of the origin of this randomness is the notion of the effective wave function of a subsystem, a notion of interest in its own right and of relevance to any discussion of quantum theory. When the quantum formalism is regarded as arising in this way, the paradoxes and perplexities so often associated with (nonrelativistic) quantum theory simply evaporate.This paper is dedicated to the memory of J. That millimeter wave propagation through a chiral medium of human trunk has been discussed by obtaining the electromagnetic filed, absorbent power, specific absorption rate, temperature field and their distribution in a human trunk model with plane strati calate homogeneous tissues under a normal incidence plane wave. The chiral medium is described electromagnetically by the constitutive relationsD=E+B andB=H+E. The constants, and ate real and have values that are fixed by the size, the shape, and the spatial distribution of the elements that collectively compose the medium. On the basis of the boundary conditions of the electromagnetic theory an explicit calculation of the absorption in a thin metallic film was carried out with the result that transport and interference components were found to exist. By applying the method to a simple metal-dielectric boundary the physical interpretation was given of the energy balance, which had hitherto been regarded as unclear. It was also explained why the reversibility principle fails when applied to a metal-dielectric boundary.

The paper deals with the theory of the new magnetomechanical phenomenon in an alternating field [6, 7]. The first part concerns the internal friction of longitudinal oscillations of a ferromagnetic material in the shape of a wire in a constant magnetic field. It is assumed that the medium in which the sample oscillates is conducting and has a certain permeability. Equations defining the magnetic field in the oscillating material are derived from the basic thermodynamic relations. The term describing the non-conservative force component in a complex formulation is used to determine the internal friction. A general relation between the internal friction and the magnetic field is derived, as well as other expressions, which are a simplification of it. The second part of the paper deals with internal friction in an alternating field. It is shown that the solution can be transformed to the sum of the internal frictions of the different harmonic oscillations, which are obtained as a partial solution of the problem on the assumption that the elastic oscillations in interaction with the field oscillations are separated into their harmonic components. The calculation then becomes that of the internal friction considered in the first part of the paper. In this case the internal friction significantly depends on the field amplitude. The functional dependence of the internal friction peak on the frequency of the mechanical oscillations is also calculated. The agreement of the theory with experiment is satisfactory.

A derivation by Fröhner of non-relativistic quantum mechanics via Fourier analysis applied to probability theory is not extendable to relativistic quantum mechanics because Schrödinger's positive definite probability density * is lost (Dirac's spin 1/2 case being the exception). The nature of the Fourier link then changes; it points to a redefinition of the probability scheme as an information carrying telegraph, the code of which is Born's as extended by Dirac and by Feynman. Hermitian symmetry of the transition amplitude between Dirac representations expresses reciprocity of preparation and measurement (the quantal coding and decoding), two equally active interventions of the physicist; as the measurement perturbs the system retrodiction implies retroaction evidenced in delayed choice. Reciprocity of knowledge and organization vindicates Wigner's claim that reciprocal to the action of matter upon mind there exists a direct action of mind upon matter: psychokinesis, branded by Jaynes as a psychiatric disorder of the Copenhagen school. As for factlike irreversibility, it is expressed by the enormity of the change rate from information to negentropy: while gain in knowledge is normal psychokinesis is paranormal. Stapp's recent discussion of psychokinesis in a quantum context should be resumed in association with an EPR correlation; an experimental test is proposed.  相似文献

Maxwell's equations are formulated as a relativistic Schrödinger-like equation for a single photon of a given helicity. The probability density of the photon satisfies an equation of continuity. The energy eigenvalue problem gives both positive and negative energies. The Feynman concept of antiparticles is applied here to show that the negative-energy states going backward in time (t –t) give antiphoton states, which are photon states with the opposite helicity. For a given mode, properties of a photon, such as energy, linear momentum, total angular momentum, orbital angular momentum, and spin are equivalent in both classical electromagnetic field theory and quantum theory. The single-photon Schrödinger equation is field (or second) quantized in a gauge-invariant way to obtain the quantum field theory of many photons. This approach treats the quantization of electromagnetic radiation in a way that parallels the quantization of material particles and, thus, provides a unified treatment.  相似文献
